Two vertical rods, one of steeland other of copper,

are each rigidly fixed at its top and are 500 nun
apart. Diameter and length of each rod are
20 mm and 4 metres respectively. A cross bar
fixed to its rods at its lower ends carriesa load of
5000N such that the crossbarremains horizontal
even after loading. Find the tension in each rod

L0

and the position of the load on the bar.

Take Es = 2x105 N/mm2
E.= 1.05x 103N/mm
2.

A steelpipe 450 mm internal diameter and 6 mm

thick is supported freely at eachend over a span
of 15 m. There is also a support at the middle of
the span initials at the same level at the end
supports. When the pipe is full of water at the
central support sinks 12 mm below the ends.

Find the pressures on each of the three supports

after the settelment and draw the bending
moment diagrams for the pipe. Determine the
Maximum bending stress in the pipe. Weight of
steel=77kN/m3. Weight of water=9.8 kN/m3
Take E:200 kN/mm2

3.

A steel tube of 200 mm external diameter is to be

shrunk on another steel tube of 60 mm internal
diarneter. After shrinking the diameter at the
'

Junction is 120 mm. Before shrinking the

difference of diameter at the Junction is 0.08mm.
Find the hoop stressesdeveloped in the two tubes
after. shrinking and the radial pressure at the
]unction.

Take E:Zx 106N/mm2

4.

A prismatic bar of hollow circular- section with

outer and inner diameters L00 mm and 80 nun
respectively, carries a bending moment of
5 kN-m. If the tensile, compressive and shear
strengths of material are given as L40 N/mm2
125 N/mm2 and 95 N/mm2 respectively. What is
the magmtude of torque that may safelybe applied
in addition to the bending moment.

A composite shaft has an aluminium tube of

external diameter 60 run and internal diameter
40 mm closely fitted to a steel rod of 40 nun. If
the perrnissible stress is 60N/mrn2 in aluminium
and 100N/mm2 in steel, find the maximum
torque the composite section can take. Given
Gu:27 kN/mm and Gr:80 kN/mm2.'

A compositebar made up of aluminium and steel

is held between two supports as shown in
Figure3. The bars are stress-freeat a temperature
of 40"C. lAlhat will be the stress in the two bars
when the temperature is 20"C if (i) the supports
are non yielding and (ii) the supports come nearer
to each other by 0.1 mm. It can be assumedthat
the change of temperature is uniform all along
the length of bar.
