1. general
n the circuit breakers shall comply with IEC947.2 or corresponding standards in member countries (VDE 0660 ;

BS 4752 ; UTE C63120) ; optional version may comply with UL / ANSI / JIS standard.
n the breaking capacity performance certificates shall be available for category B to the above mentioned

standards.The test shall be carried out with a breaking performance during operation (Ics) and admissible short
time withstand (Icw) equal to the ultimate breaking capacity (Icu).
n all circuit breakers can be reverse fed without reduction in performance.
n all circuit breakers shall have a rated operational voltage of 690V AC (50/60Hz).
n the rated insulation voltage shall be 1000V AC (50/60Hz).
n all circuit breakers shall be fully tropicalized (T2) as standard.
n the circuit breaker shall comply with the isolating function requirements of IEC 947-2 section 7.1.2.

2. construction
n the air circuit breaker ratings shall be from 250 to 6300A for the same range.
n the air circuit breaker shall have one size from 800 to 3200A.
n the required safety clearance around the air circuit breaker may be canceled by adding protective covers. Type

tests shall be achieved with the minimum safety clearance.


n all air circuit breakers shall be designed to be maintained ; in order to reduce maintenance, electrical

endurance characteristics shall be very high. Up to 2000A, the circuit breaker shall offer an electrical
endurance without servicing nor maintenance (CO at Un = 690V) equal to the mechanical endurance.
n they shall be available in fixed or drawout models and in 3-poles or 4-poles versions.
n on 4-pole version, the neutral pole shall have the same current rating as the other poles from 800 up to 4000A and

N/2 from 5000 up to 6300A.


n all air circuit breakers main contact shall be encased in a reinforced polyester casing and offer double insulation

from the operators on the breaker front face. The circuit breaker also shall offer total insulation of the control part
with respect to the power part.

3. operating mechanism
n the operating mechanism shall be of the O.C.O stored energy spring type with a closing time of less than or equal

to 80ms.
n there shall be 2 types of spring charging:

either hand charged spring where the springs are wound only by hand:
or motor charged spring, where the springs are automatically charged by an electric motor. The maximum time to
charge the springs shall not exceed 4 seconds. It shall also be possible to charge the springs manually.

4. main contacts
n general

Contacts shall be designed to be maintenance free in normal usage. The main contacts shall be equipped with
an indicator in order to allow its wear level to be checked without measurements nor specific tools.
n indicators

A mechanical indicator shall be provided on the front face of the air circuit breaker which is linked to the main
contact assembly in such a manner as to positively indicate the contact status, it shall only be possible for "OFF" to
be indicated when all contacts are parted and isolated by the required distance.

5. arc chutes
Arc chutes shall be common on the whole range and removable on site to allow inspection of arc chutes and main
contacts.

6. drawout mechanism
n general

The drawout operation shall be possible through a closed door.


Three positions of the moving part shall be possible :
1 - connected position - all auxiliary and main circuits engaged
2 - test position - all auxiliary circuits engaged all main circuits disconnected
3 - isolated position - all circuits disconnected.
n safety requirements

A door interlock shall be provided so that it shall not be possible to open the door until the air circuit
breaker
moving part is in the disconnected position.
Insulated safety shutters shall be provided over the incoming and outgoing main circuits and over the auxiliary
circuits. An interlocking shall be provided to prevent insertion of a circuit breaker having a rating higher than the
current rating of the fixed part, into that fixed part.
The racking handle shall be stowed on the air circuit breaker in such a manner as to be accessible without
defeating the door interlocking.
The safety perimeter shall be reduced to zero for the drawout version above and to the sides of the A.C.B.

7. electrical auxiliaries
All electrical auxiliaries including the motor spring charging mechanism shall be field adaptable without adjustment or
the necessity for any tool (except a screwdriver). They shall be fitted into a compartment which under normally
loaded conditions has no metalwork energized from the main poles exposed with it. Any adaptation carried out thus
shall not increase the breaker volume.
It shall be possible to connect all auxiliary wiring from the front face of the air circuit breaker, this wiring shall be
taken through a set of disconnecting contacts, so that all auxiliary wiring is automatically disconnected in the
isolated position.

8. mechanical indicators
Mechanical indication on the front of the air circuit breaker shall be provided to indicate the following :
1 - main contacts closed "ON"
2 - main contacts open "OFF"
3 - springs charged
4 - springs discharged
5 - circuit breaker in "connected" position (drawout only)
6 - circuit breaker in "test" position (drawout only)
7 - circuit breaker in "disconnected" position (drawout only)
All indicators must be clearly visible.

n control functions

In order to optimize the operation, maintainance and monitoring of the breaker in complete safety the following
control items shall be supplied as standard as an integral part of the control unit :
local overcurrent LED indication with 2 levels - LED steady or flashing - on the front face and one volt free output
contact shall indicate as a pre trip alarm
two NO and two NC output contacts plus one CO fault trip contact (SDE) shall be available
thermal memory:
the control unit shall optimize the protection of the equipment or the circuit conductors in the event of repeated
overloads or faults by using thermal integration to memorize temperature rises
safety:
internal overheating of the control unit shall be signalled by a self monitoring alarm.

1. general
n the high rating MCCB shall comply with IEC 947-2 or corresponding standards in member countries (VDE 0660 ;

BS 4752 ; UTE C63120) : they may as an alternative comply with UL / JIS standards.
n the breaking capacity performance certificates shall be available for the category B to the above mentionned

standards. The test shall be carried out under the breaking performance during operation (Ics) and under the
admissible short time withstand (Icw) equal to 50% of the ultimate breaking capacity (Icu).
n the MCCB shall have a rated operational voltage of 690V AC (50/60Hz)
n the rated insulation voltage shall be 750V AC (50/60Hz).
n the MCCB shall be designed for horizontal or vertical mounting without any adverse effect on electrical

performance.
n if shall be possible to reverse fed the breaker without reduction in performance up to 500V AC.
n the breaker shall be maintenance free and fully tropicalized (T2).
n it shall either be 3 poles or 4 poles (switched neutral).
n the MCCB shall be of circuit breaker disconnector type.

2. construction
n the operating mechanism of the circuit breaker shall be of the trip free type, quick make and quick break design.

All mechanical components of the breaker shall be enclosed in an insulated casing.


n the trip unit shall be of the solid state type energized by internally mounted current transformers. It shall not require

any external power supply to operate the tripping mechanism. The trip unit shall be interchangeable.

3. characteristics
n the solid state protection unit shall have as required.

long time protection adjustable from 0.5 to 1 times sensor rating


short time protection
adjustable from 3 to 6 times the setting made on the long time protection
time delay (when required) adjustable from instantaneous to 0.225s.
instantaneous
threshold set at 35kA.

n the standard operating mechanism shall be constructed so that the handle of the circuit breaker indicate the true

position of the contacts to ensure a positive break indication.


n where required, motor operated mechanism, shunt trip, undervoltage release, auxiliary switches up to four

changeover contacts and a tripped signal contact shall be provided. Each of these units shall incorporate a prewired terminal strip which is accessible from the front of the breaker without removing the cover.

4. operation
n if required, the breaker shall be provided with the facility for padlocking or keylocking in the open position.

n the MCCB shall comply with IEC 947-2 or corresponding standards in member countries (BS EN 60 947-2 ;

VDE 0660 ; UTE 63120) : they may as an alternative comply with UL / JIS standards.
n except for current limiting circuit breakers, the breaking capacity performance certificates shall be available for the

category B to the above mentionned standards. The test shall be carried out under the breaking performance during
operation (Ics) equal to 50 % of the ultimate breaking capacity (Icu) and under the admissible short time withstand
(Icw) equal to 12I N or at least to 12 kA.
n all MCCB's shall be of the current limiting type enabling full use of current limitation and hence cascading

techniques. Failing this, the breaking capacity of a circuit breaker shall be at least equal to the prospective short
circuit at the point of the distribution system where the breaker is installed.
n the MCCB shall have a rated operational voltage of 690V AC (50/60Hz)
n the rated insulation voltage shall be 750V AC (50/60Hz).
n the MCCB shall be of circuit breaker disconnector type.
n the MCCB shall be designed for horizontal or vertical mounting without any adverse effect on electrical

performance.
n if shall be possible to reverse fed the circuit breaker without reduction in performance up to 500V AC.
n they shall be available in fixed, plug-in or withdrawable models and in 3-poles or 4-poles versions.

2. construction
n operating mechanism shall be of the quick make quick break type, with the speed of operation independent of the

operator, and mechanically trip free from the operating handle so as to prevent the contacts from being held closed
against short-circuit and overload conditions. The operating mechanism shall be constructed to operate all poles in
a multi-pole breaker simultaneously during opening, closing and tripped conditions.
n the breakers shall be operated by a toggle which shall clearly indicate the three fundamental position ON, OFF and

TRIPPED.
n if required, the breaker will be equipped with rotary handles.
n the breaking and extinction of the electrical arc shall be achieved by means of non-welding contacts and an arc

chute surrounding these contacts.


n the current limiting MCCB with very high breaking capacity shall be made of two parts :

a standard circuit breaker to operate on small and medium fault currents


a current limiter block to operate on large short-circuit currents.
n the current limitor block shall be of electro mechanical type (fuse free) and fitted to the standard breaker.
n the standard operating mechanism shall be constructed so that the handle of the circuit breaker indicate the real

position of the contacts to ensure a positive break indication.


n the breakers will have a double insulation of the front face allowing field installable auxiliaries without isolating

the unit.
n all accessories and electrical auxiliaries such as shunt trip or undervoltage release, auxiliary contact, motor

mechanism shall be manufactured in such a way that they can be easily on field installable.
n all electrical auxiliaries shall be equipped with built-in control terminals.
n all internal electrical auxiliaries shall be of plug-in type.

3. operation
n the MCCB shall be equipped with solid state trip unit for overload and short circuit protections.
n if required, the breaker shall be provided with the facility for padlocking or keylocking in the open position.

n general requirements

The current sensors necessary to detect the magnitude of current in the phases shall be located within the case of
the circuit breaker.
The overcurrent relay shall have a large setting adjustements in order to easy set them without detailed specification
of the installation.
It may communicate on a BUS.

adjustable - by steps of 2% (32 setting positions) - from 40% to 100% of the sensor rating (In).
time delay adjustable from 15 to 480 seconds at 1.5 times the setting made for long time delay.

adjustable from 1,5 to 10 times long time protection setting (In) (up to 8 times the nominal rating for
circuit breaker limitor type).

n control functions

The following control items shall be supplied as standard as an integral part of the control unit :
Load indicator : 2 or more LEDs shall indicate the load of the circuit breaker
from 60 to 90% of the load (= LT setting), green LEDs shall be constantly lit
over 105% of the load, one yellow LED shall be flashing.
Test equipment - a complete test kit shall be integrated into the control unit.
Thermal memory : the control unit shall optimize the protection of the equipment or the conductors in the events of
repeated overloads or earth faults by using thermal integration to memorize temperature rises.

n options

Without an increase in volume it shall be possible to combine the following functions into the circuit breaker control
unit :
Load monitoring and control.
Earth fault protection (with or without a zone selective interlocking).
Remote indication of all circuit breaker trip functions and operational parameters.
Fault trip indication - indicating the element long time, short time instantaneous (earth fault protection if supplied)
that has caused the circuit breaker to trip, signalled locally by a LED.
Communication on a BUS : especially all settings of the control unit, all currents read by the CTs, cause of
malfunction, states of the circuit breaker.

1. general
n the moulded-case circuit breakers shall comply with IEC 947-1 and 947-2 standards or with the corresponding

standards applicable in the member countries (VDE 0660, BS 4752, NF EN 60 947-1/2) :


they shall be of category A with a rated service breaking capacity (Ics) equal to the ultimate breaking capacity
(Icu) - on all the operational voltage range for the ratings up to 250A, up to 500V for the greater ratings they shall have a rated operational voltage of 690 V AC (50/60 Hz),
they shall have a rated insulation voltage of 750 V AC (50/60 Hz).
they shall be suitable for isolation, as defined by IEC 947-2, 7-27.
n production site organisation shall be certified to comply with ISO 9002 standard.
n the moulded circuit-breakers shall be supplied in recyclable packing complying with European Directives.

The manufacturer shall implement non polluting production processes that do not make use of chlorofluorocarbons,
chlorinated hydrocarbons, ink for cardboard markings, etc.
n the moulded-case circuit breakers shall be available in fixed or plug-in/withdrawable versions as well as in 3-pole

and 4-pole versions. For plug-in/withdrawable versions, a safety trip shall provide advanced opening to prevent
connection and disconnection of a closed circuit breaker.
n the moulded-case circuit breakers shall be designed for both vertical and horizontal mounting, without any adverse

effect on electrical performance. It shall be possible to supply power either from the upstream or downstream side.
n the moulded-case circuit breakers shall provide class II insulation (according to IEC 664 standard) between the

front and internal power circuits.

2. construction, operation, environment


n for maximum safety, the power contacts shall be insulated in an enclosure made of a thermosetting material from

other functions such as the operating mechanism, the case, the trip unit and auxiliaries.
n the operating mechanism of the moulded-case circuit breakers shall be of the quick-make, quick-break type with

fault tripping overriding manual operation. All poles shall operate simultaneously for circuit breaker opening, closing
and tripping.
n the moulded-case circuit breakers shall be actuated by a toggle or handle that clearly indicates the three positions:

ON, OFF and TRIPPED.


n in order to ensure suitability for isolation complying with IEC 947-2 7-27 :

the operating mechanism shall be designed such that the toggle or handle can only be in OFF position (O)
if the power contacts are all actually separated,
in OFF position, the toggle or handle shall indicate the isolation position.
Isolation shall be provided by a double break on the main circuit.
n the moulded-case circuit breakers shall be able to receive a device for locking in the "isolated" position, with

up to 3 padlocks.
n the moulded-case circuit breakers shall be equipped with a "push to trip" button in front to test operation and

the opening of the poles.


n the circuit breaker rating, the "push to trip" button, outgoing circuit identification and the contact position indication

must be clearly visible and accessible from the front, through the front panel or the door of the switchboard.

current limiting, discrimination, endurance


n the moulded-case circuit breakers shall be capable of greatly limiting currents. For short-circuits, the maximum
thermal stress I2t shall be limited to
106 A2s for ratings up to 250 A,
5 x 106 A2s for ratings between 400 A and 630 A.
These characteristics will allow high cascading performance with moulded-case or miniature circuit-breakers
downstream.
n the moulded-case circuit breakers shall comprise a device, designed to trip the circuit-breaker in the event of high-

value short-circuit currents. This device shall be independent of the thermal-magnetic or electronic trip unit.
n the moulded-case circuit breakers, the current ratings of which are identical with the ratings of their trip units, shall

ensure discrimination for any fault current up to at least 35 kA rms, with any downstream circuit-breaker having a
current rating less or equal to 0.4 times that of the upstream circuit-breaker.
n the electrical endurance of the moulded-case circuit breakers, as defined by IEC 947-2 standard, shall be at least

equal to 3 times the minimum required by the standard.

auxiliaries and accessories


n it shall be possible to equip the moulded-case circuit breakers with a motor mechanism for electrically controlled
operation. An "auto/manual" switch in front shall, when set to the "manual" position, lock out electrical control;
remote indication of "manual" or "auto" mode shall be possible.
Closing shall take place in less than 80 ms.
Following tripping due to electrical faults (overload, short-circuit, earth fault), remote reset shall be inhibited.
It shall however be possible if opening was initiated by a voltage release.
The operating mechanism shall be of the stored-energy type only.
n the addition of a motor mechanism or a rotary handle shall in no way affect circuit breaker characteristics:

only three stable tripping mechanism positions (ON, OFF and TRIPPED) shall be possible with the motor
mechanism,
suitability for isolation shall be provided by positive contact indication (ON and OFF) in front of the motor
mechanism module.
n the moulded-case circuit breakers shall be designed to enable safe on-site installation of auxiliaries such as voltage

IEC 529 as regards the degree of protection of the enclosures. They shall comply as well with country-specific
standards NFC 12-100, C15-100 relative to the production of LV electrical installations.
n the protection index shall be defined in accordance with the IEC 529 standard. The standard index shall be IP 31
