By SEAN LAJOIE

In the United States, DockDogs was established in 2000 as an
athletic event in which dogs compete in jumping for distance
or height from a dock into a body of water. Its first event was
held at the ESPN 2000 Great Outdoor Games competition.
Fifteen years later, this organization has done nothing but
grow, and two of its biggest competitors live right in here in
Medford.

He is not yet 1 year old and is already following in his halfsister Limoncellos winning footsteps. Hooch hopes to soon
also qualify for the world championships.

The Medford Board of Education announced at its last meeting
that the S.P.A.R.K.lers (Sending

This edition of the camp will
hold a bit more meaning considering it will be leading students

Due to some concern about the

littlest learners be prepared for

The S.P.A.R.K.lers program
provides a perfect opportunity to
get ahead of the game.
The camp will focus on teaching students basic classroom behavior skills such as listening, following directions, social skills,

The highest level of credibility
someone can achieve when attempting to tell a story is having
lived the experience themselves.
As a junior on the Shawnee
High School basketball team,
Tyson Hartnetts basketball career took off, and 10 years later, he
is here to share every minute detail of that journey through his
recently written book, Hoop
Dreams Fulfilled.
I tell people I played pro basketball and they want to hear all
about it, Hartnett said. Ive experienced all of these things that
arent normal, and I figured a
book would be the best way to express these experiences with people.
Hartnett grew up in Medford
Lakes and he played a lot of
sports.

Wills/Estates

HARTNETT
Around seventh grade is when
I realized I had to choose something, Hartnett said. Do I want
to play a lot of sports for fun and
be average or take one seriously?
Hartnett had always enjoyed
training for basketball and taking
countless shots in the gym. At
that point in his life, he shared a

common goal of many of his

peers to play professionally in
the NBA.
I thought if I put the work in,
it would end up happening in the
end, but thats not always the
case, Hartnett said.
He referred multiple times to
Jason Thompson, a former AAU
teammate of his who is now the
longest-tenured player on the
NBAs Sacramento Kings.
During their AAU days, there
was not a whole lot that separated
him from the team.
However, after factoring in elements that were out of his control
such as size and politics that surround sports, hard work was not
the end all, be all.
Early in Hartnetts career, he
participated in All-American
camps such as the Adidas Superstar Camp, Pangos All-American

in our opinion

The Internet will follow you

The past is not truly the past online
his week has us thinking about
the future of our kids a lot.
High school seniors, eighth
graders and kindergarteners will all
celebrate graduations this week, closing one door behind them and opening
another in front of them.
Its a vast new world that these kids
and young adults are living in, one
that is drastically different from the
one in which their parents lived at
their age.
Technology has provided plenty of
good, plenty of opportunities that the
kids of even 10 to 20 years ago didnt
have. Its mind-boggling.
And its also potentially dangerous.
The Internet can give a person a voice
that can reach millions of people with
a few taps on a keyboard. In terms of
civic involvement, in research and in

other areas, this is something plenty of

us would have loved to have had when
we were younger. With the opportunity, though, also comes the potential for
long-lasting damage.
Kids dont often listen to their parents and teachers when they try to
teach them lessons. So maybe they can
learn a lesson from pop star Iggy Azalea.
Last week, posts that Azalea made to
Twitter four years ago have resurfaced, with screen shots of her posts
showing insensitive sexual and racist

Dan McDonough Jr.

remarks. As a result, Azalea cancelled

a scheduled performance at Pittsburghs LGBT Pride event last weekend.
The Pittsburgh chapter of the Gay,
Lesbian & Straight Education Network didnt march in the Pittsburgh
Pride parade because Azalea was
scheduled to perform.
Azalea, who turned 25 years old this
month, is facing the music for things
she posted as a 21-year-old.
Its a lesson we can all learn from
once you post it, its there forever.
Even though Azalea deleted those
four-year-old Tweets, they were still
available for someone to find.
So, kids, be careful what you post.
Be careful what you do online. It may
seem innocent now, but it could come
back to haunt you years down the line.

He was there when you took your first

Dads arent always determined by biology, either. Maybe you have another influence in your life you would like to celebrate

Chairville School after being held
at the Kirbys Mill school in its
original year.
The curriculum department
will also be continuing a special
needs program that will be held
at the Chairville School, along
with an art camp and a drama
camp.
The Stay Active and Learn
camp will be held this summer as
well. This is a similar concept to
the S.P.A.R.K.L.ers, but it was created to aid incoming first graders
as opposed to incoming kindergarteners.
The S.P.A.R.K.L.ers program
will be a bit more challenging to
plan for because there is no list of
incoming kindergarteners like
there is for incoming first
graders, so parents are encouraged to register as soon as possible.
There will be three teachers
chosen to teach the three
S.P.A.R.K.L.ers classes and three
teachers for the S.A.I.L. classes.
These teachers will apply for
these opportunities via the curriculum office.
We try to keep the numbers
between 30 and 45, Administrative Director of Programming
and Planning Tom Olsen said.
So about 10 to 15 kids per class.
These students are qualified
based on a criterion that includes
parent and teacher recommendations.
The students are also screened
before and after the program.
This screening consists of a series of reading and writing questions.
In the first year of the camp,
the district noticed a significant
difference in the literacy of the
students in the post screening
when comparing them to their
pre-screening results.
We found that the students entered kindergarten with a higher
level of skill development than
they did in the kindergarten

screening that we did before the

program, Olsen said.
An added concern the curriculum department discussed was
the heightened expectations by
the state for this group.
I wouldnt say they were coming in unprepared, but given the
raised expectations by the state of
New Jersey for kindergarteners,
we thought we could help some of
those students that needed a
boost, Olsen said.
The S.P.A.R.K.L.ers camp will
be tuition-free, despite the district
starting to charge for some programs.

We try to provide programs

and services, and these parents
that are taxpayers shouldnt also
have to pay tuition for this program if they so choose to enroll
their child, Olsen said. We encourage parents to send their
kids, and we think the tuition-free
aspect will provide for a better
turnout.

He received a call from the
head coach of the Rowan college
basketball team, Joe Cassidy.
I visited, met the team and
loved everything about it, Hartnett said. Its a generally local
school based on where I grew up,
so I knew some of the guys already and I viewed it as the perfect place to finish my career.
Hartnett finished his college
stint at Rowan as an all-conference player and acknowledged
coach Cassidy for being the one
who helped him find his confidence again.
Going from Division III basketball to the NBA is nearly unheard
of, so with the help of his former
AAU coach Barry, he was able to
land on a professional team in

Sweden.
He played professionally in
Sweden, Argentina and Chile all
for one year each.
The idea of playing professionally has a glamorous worldly
feel to it, Hartnett said. When
people think of pro sports, they
think of the NBA, private jets,
Bentleys and MTV cribs.
The reality of it was described
much differently by Hartnett.
.1 percent of us ever actually
make it that high. Most just end
up playing two to three times a
day, making a decent amount of
money, Hartnett said.
Many basketball fans also dont
recognize that foreign teams are
typically only allowed one to two
Americans, so it can be very hard
for those players to fit in with the

rest of the team, especially if

they dont speak the native language.
After his career overseas, Hartnett returned to the States and
drifted with the wind for a while,
doing a few jobs here and there.
Eventually he came to terms
with the NBA being out of reach,
so he decided to try to help athletes with their careers through
teaching them different skills
that were passed down to him.
Hartnett created a website
called BasketballTrainingClub.
com, an online tutorial for hopeful young athletes. Founded in
2013, it contains a collection of
more than 440 videos, e-books and
a support community to help athletes. He also got heavily into
writing as an outlet to voice his
opinions and experiences to the
things he felt so strongly about.
Hartnett viewed writing as the
next chapter of his life. He received positive feedback on his

writing and was encouraged by

numerous people to write a book.
After about three or four
drafts of writing the book, I revised it down to what I think best
told my story, Hartnett said.
The real behind-the-scenes
story adds perspective about a career that is not all successes as it
is portrayed in the public eye.
Hartnetts goal is to provide the
real view of what the common
dream of playing professional
basketball consists of.
There's a lot that goes on inside the minds of athletes and
their families during a career. I
want to bring light to these things
that people are scared to talk
about, or they just don't know
enough about, Hartnett said.
You can purchase a paper copy
of Hartnetts book or the Kindle
version

name of Limoncello was recently

invited to compete in the DockDogs World Championships in
November.
We are so very excited,
Jenny Beadling said.
Jenny is the wife of Brian
Beadling who is Cellos official

handler. While Brian is technically the handler, his wife Jenny and
their other GSP, Hooch, enjoy the
successes theyve experienced as
a family.
Our family is just the four of
us, so the time together is the best
part, traveling all over and just
sharing all of the laughs and experiences makes it all worthwhile, Brian said.
Cello is a bit more established
than Hooch at this point in her career, as she is known within the

dock diving community as poundfor-pound one of the best dogs involved in the sport. However,
Hooch is certainly on the up and
coming, as he is not even 1 year
old.
Both dogs donate all cash
prizes to the GSP Rescue of New
Jersey, and all food and toy prizes
to The Animal Orphanage in
Voorhees. They have also been
chosen as ambassadors for TurboPUP, a company that specializes in meal bars for dogs.
Brian and Jenny became the
proud parents of Limoncello in
May 2011. She received her
unique name after Jennys grandfathers secret recipe, so her full
name is Tommy Ds Limoncello.
She is the ultimate water dog.
Her entire body shivers with
excitement with the site of water
to jump into or lay in, Jenny
said.
Luckily the Beadlings have a
dock right in their backyard with
a lake for the dogs to jump in at
their leisure. In fact, that is where
this all started.
When we were out back, we
would occasionally throw a toy in
the water and she would get it in a
pretty impressive fashion, Brian
said. I happened to have recently
seen DockDogs on ESPN and
thought we should give it a try for
fun.
Cello placed second in the first
competition she attended, and at
her second competition, she took
home first place.
This is only her second full

year competing, so the Beadlings

werent sure how to qualify her
for the world championship competition originally. This year, they
were determined to get her in, so
they enlisted her in all of the
events that could help her qualify.
She went to the first iron dog
competition and won it, so she
was already qualified at that
point, Brian said. We are now
dedicating the rest of the summer
to getting Hooch in as well.
These competitions consist of
a series of events that test the
leaping and swimming abilities of
the dogs.
The big air jump is performed on a 40-foot dock covered
in AstroTurf in which one dog
and one trainer run down and
toss a toy in to see how far out the
dog can jump.
The speed retrieve is an
event in which the dog swims to
the end of a pool to grab a
bumper and swims back while
being timed.
And the most popular of all of
these events is the extreme
vert, a contest in which a
bumper is set up about eight feet
over the water and is continuously raised until the last dog is left
standing.
The Iron Dog is a combination
of all three of these, with scores
averaged. This is what Cello will
be competing in in Iowa for the
DockDogs world championships.
DockDogs has become a global
corporation over the years. The
multiple locations make compet-

ing in any of these events convenient for dog owners.

Some of these dogs spend
hours with trainers and practicing in facilities, while some folks,
such as the Beadlings, do it for the
enjoyment of playing with their
dogs.
They are often accompanied by
Cello and Hooch everywhere they
go.
We do everything together,
dock diving, they come out with,
we even bring them to wineries
on occasion, Brian said.
On their most recent adventure, they took a trip to the Fairfax County Fair in Virginia
where Hooch tried extreme
vert for the first time and actually jumped higher than Cello.
Hooch is actually a half brother of Cellos that the Beadlings
brought home last July.
Since we just adore Cello, and
think she is just the most amazing pup, when we found out in
July 2014 that Limoncellos mother had another litter, we could not
help but go visit her and see the
puppies, Jenny said.
You will not have any trouble
finding them online if you are interested in reading more about
these exceptionally talented pups.
Cello has her own website (celloscorner.com), which has attracted more than 17,240 visitors from
96 countries. They also have more
than 2,300 Instagram followers
(instagram.com/celloscorner)
and more than 800 Facebook fans
(facebook.com/CellosCorner).
