ASSESSMENT TEST - 8 (Time & Work, Allegation & Mixture and Boats & Streams)

Date: 29.01.2015

1. A man can row upstream at a speed of 20kmph and downstream at a speed of 27kmph. Find the speed of
the stream.
2. The speed of the boat in still water is 5kmph. The speed of the stream is 2 kmph. The distance travelled by a
boat upstream in 3.5 hrs is.
3. A boat travels 10 km upstream and 5 km downstream in 3 hrs. If the speed of the boat in still water is 7
kmph, find the speed of the stream.
4. The time taken by a boat to travel upstream is twice the time taken by it to travel downstream. If the speed
of the boat in still water is 9 kmph, find the rate of current.
5. A boat can travel 16 km upstream and 24 km downstream in 4 hrs. It can travel 24 km upstream and 18 km
downstream in 4.5 hrs. Find the speed of the boat.
6. A motorboat with speed of 15 kmph travels 72km downstream in 4 hrs. Find the time required to travel the
same distance upstream.
7. Find the ratio between the speeds of the boat and stream if the boat can travel 30 km upstream in 3 hrs and
the same distance downstream in 2 hrs.
8. A jar contains 10 liters of milk. After selling 1 liter of milk, the milkman adds 1 liter of water to the jar. He
repeats the process again. What is the percentage of milk contained in the jar now?
9. The ratio of milk and water contained in a mixture is 7:1. On adding 2 liters of water to the mixture, the ratio
becomes 5:1. Find the amount of milk contained.
10. There are two milk containers 60 liters each. They contain milk and water in the ratio of 11:1 and 9:1. If the
two are poured together, find the amount of milk in the resulting mixture.
11. A milk vendor has 2 cans of milk. The first contains 25% water and the rest milk. The second contains 50%
water. How much milk should he mix from each of the container so as to get 12 liters of milk suc that the
ratio of water to milk is 3:5?
12. The proportion of milk and water in 3 samples is 4:3, 5:2 and 2:1. A mixture comprising of equal quantities of
all 3 samples is made. The proportion of milk and water in the mixture is.
13. Tea worth Rs. 120/kg and Rs. 136/kg are mixed with a third variety in the ratio of 1:1:2. If the mixture is
worth Rs. 144/kg, the price of the third variety per kg is.
14. A milkman buys 75 liters of milk diluted with 4% of water. He further dilutes it by adding 5 liters of water.
Find the percentage of water contained in the milk.
15. C takes 6 days to complete half of a work and D takes 5 days to complete 1/3rd of the same work. They take
turns to complete the task. If C works for the first 4 days, in how many days will D complete the rest of the
work without the help of C?
16. A contract is to be completed in 50 days and 105men were set to work, each working 8 hrs a day. After 25
days, 2/5th of the work is finished. How many additional men are employed so that the work may be
completed on time, each man now working 9 hrs a day?
17. A, B, C can do a work in 8, 14, 16 days respectively. A does the work for the first 2 days. B continues from it
and finishes 2/3rd of the remaining work. C finishes the remaining work. How many days would have taken to
complete the work?
18. Twelve men can do the work in 20 days while twenty women can finish the same work in sixteen days. Find
the ration between the capacity of a man and a woman.
19. A completes 40% of a work in 8 days. If B is 60% as efficient as A, find the time taken by complete the rest of
the work.
20. Jim can do a piece of work in 8 hrs. Paul can do the same work in 10 hrs, hari can do the same work in 12 hrs.
Jim, paul and hari start the same work together at 9 am. While jim stops at 11 am, the remaining two
complete the work. Around what time will the work be completed?
