1. Installing Match! on Windows PCs
----------------------------------Before you install and run Match!, you should check the following minimum system
requirements:
- Personal Computer with Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8
- 1 GB of RAM
- Hard disk with minimum 500 MB of free disk space
- Graphics resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels (1280 x 800 pixels or more recommende
d)
- FullProf release October 2014 (or later) required for Rietveld refinement
In order to install Match!, please download and run the corresponding installer
from
http://www.crystalimpact.com/match/download.htm
If you already have Match! 2 installed on your machine and have created a new re
ference database (e.g. the PDF) "for all users", please note that uninstalling M
atch! 2 will automatically delete the "Reference Database Library" entry for it
(not the reference database or the corresponding index files itself). Hence, the
re are three options:
- Do NOT uninstall a previous version of Match! 2 before installing a new
version.
- If the Reference Database Library entry has been deleted by the uninstaller,
you can add the corresponding reference again (without having to run the datab
ase indexing again) using the "Add" button/function at the bottom of the
"Reference Database Library" dialog. Normally, reference databases are
created in the "Application Data" directory (or the corresponding "Crystal
Impact/Match! 2" subdirectory).
- Finally, you can prevent the uninstaller from deleting the references to your
own reference databases by creating them not "for all users" but only for you.

In order to do so, please make sure the deactivate to corresponding checkbox

at the bottom left of the "Create Reference Database" dialog when creating/
indexing a new reference database.
If you are using Microsoft Vista, Windows 7 or 8 as operating system, please not
e that you need to run the installer (and uninstaller) using administrator right
s explicitly. In order to do so, please right-click on the installation file you
have downloaded, then select "Run as administrator" from the context menu.
Please note the terms of the "End User License Agreement", which will appear in
the second dialog box of the installer!
2. License Installation and Running the Software
-----------------------------------------------After you have installed the main software from the download package, the progra
m will run in the evaluation mode, which basically means that it will stop funct
ioning 60 days after the installation. You still need to install your personal l
icense in order to transform the software into the fully personalized, unrestric
ted version.
In order to do so, simply copy the license file yourlicense.lic that you have rece
ived by e-mail into the directory where you have installed the program. The dire
ctory where the software is installed by default is "/opt/Match2. Note that you
may need administrator privileges to perform this task!
Afterwards, please verify again that the license file is really present in the c
orresponding directory, then run Match!. This can be done e.g. by double-clickin
g the file "Match!.exe" in the directory where you have installed the program (e
.g. "C:\Program Files\Match! 2"). Alternatively, you can run the software by cli
cking the Windows "Start" button, then on "Match2/Match!".
Your license data should be displayed at the bottom of the splash screen (at pro
gram startup), to the right of the status bar at the bottom as well as in the Abo
ut Match! dialog which can be opened from the Help menu.
3. Installation of FullProf software
-----------------------------------Match! can use the well-known software "FullProf" (J. Rodriguez-Carvajal, Physic
a B. 192, 55 (1993); http://www.ill.eu/sites/fullprof; FullProf release October
2014 (or later)
required for Rietveld refinement) to run Rietveld refinement calculations. If yo
u would like to use this feature, you have to install FullProf (at least if it i
s not already present on your machine):
You can download and install FullProf directly from the FullProf web page (where
you will also find detailed installation instructions):
http://www.ill.eu/sites/fullprof/php/downloads.html
As an alternative, you can also download and install FullProf from the Crystal I
mpact web page
http://www.crystalimpact.com/match/download.htm#download_fp
Simply follow the download and installation instructions given there for the Win

dows platform.
4. Adjustment of User Level
--------------------------When you run Match! for the very first time, you will be asked which default use
r level ("Beginner" or "Expert") you prefer:
In the "Beginner" mode Match! performs a nearly complete automatic processing of
the initial steps: All you have to do is to select the diffraction data file yo
u would like to analyze (you will be prompted automatically for it once the soft
ware has been started). Afterwards, Match! will automatically process the raw da
ta, determine the peaks, and run the search-match calculation. All that remains
to do is to select the "matching" phases (e.g. by double-clicking or dragging th
e corresponding entries from the candidate list on the left-hand side to the Mat
ch list to the right), and finally display the report containing e.g. the list o
f matching phases as well as their arbitrary amounts (e.g. by selecting "View/Re
port").
In the "Expert" mode you have to perform nearly all actions manually. This mode
is especially recommended for experienced users who would like to analyze more c
omplicated samples.
You can customize the user level ("batch" behaviour) on the "Batch" tab of the "
Tools/Options" dialog also later on. In addition to selecting user levels like "
Beginner" or "Expert" you can also select individual batch steps according to yo
ur requirements.
5. Reference Pattern Database
----------------------------Match! identifies phases in a sample by comparing its powder diffraction pattern
to
reference patterns of known phases. Hence, it needs a so-called "reference datab
ase"
in which these reference patterns are provided. There are several options for ob
taining
a reference database:
Match! is by default installed along with the COD-Inorganics reference database.
The
name of this reference database already indicates that it contains powder diffra
ction
patterns calculated from inorganic crystal structure data (compounds without C-H
-bonds)
taken from the COD ("Crystallography Open Database"). This reference database is
especially appropriate if you are typically analyzing mineral samples; it is use
d
throughout the tutorial.
All entries of the COD-Inorganics reference database contain atomic coordinates,
based on
which the corresponding powder diffraction patterns have been calculated. Beside
s this,
for all entries, I/Ic-values have been calculated, so that a semi-quantitative a
nalysis
can be carried out.
If the COD-Inorganics reference database is not suitable for your requirements,

you can
download and install the full COD reference database from
http://www.crystalimpact.com/match/download.htm#refdb
or from a Crystal Impact DVDs distributed at various meetings, e.g. the ECM- or
IUCr-conferences.
As an alternative to the COD reference databases, you can of course also use any
ICDD PDF database product (PDF relational database products only on Windows PCs)
, or
the "old" ICSD/Retrieve database (released 1993-2002), if you have a valid licen
se for it.
Finally, it is also possible to apply your own diffraction or crystal structure
data
in phase identification, by importing them into a so-called "user database".
6. Documentation
---------------Once you have installed the software on any of the three platforms, a tutorial h
andbook
is available as documentation. You can access it either from
within Match! using the menu ("Help-Tutorial Handbook") or directly by
double-clicking on the file "Tutorial.pdf" in Match!'s program directory.
In addition to the software overview and a "quickstart" tutorial, this
document contains several important chapters:
First of all, the software maintenance (e.g. installation) is described in the
corresponding chapter on p. 19. Once you have setup the software on your machine
,
please follow the tutorial session on p. 22 where the basic usage of the program
is
demonstrated.
If you have already used the previous version 1 of the software, you should also
have
a look at the chapter "What's New for Match! 1 Users" on p. 8. Here, you can get
a
quick overview over the major changes between version 1 and 2 of the software.
This chapter is also recommended for other users who would like to learn about t
he
advanced features of the software!
If you are an experienced user and would like to get a quick overview on how to
operate the software, please have a look at the chapter "Table of Mouse Button a
nd
Key Combinations" in the Appendix.
There are two basic keyboard shortcuts you should always keep in mind:
- F1 will open the online help at the index page, so that you can easily
search for information about a given keyword/issue.
- Ctrl+J will display a table of all mouse operations and keyboard shortcuts th
at

can be used.
Using these two shortcuts, you should be able to clarify most issues and questio
ns.
7. Online Update
---------------By default, Match! automatically checks the Crystal Impact web server for a more
recent version each time it is executed. If a new version is found, you will be
informed and guided to the corresponding web page from which you can download t
he new version.
You can also manually check for a more recent version, simply by selecting the "
Check for updates..." command from the "Help" menu. The procedure will be the sa
me as the one described above for the automatic update.
8. Uninstalling Match!
---------------------If you would like to uninstall Match!, please click on the Windows "Start" butto
n, then click on "Programs", and finally select the command "Uninstall Match!" f
rom the "Match! 2" subfolder.
If you are using Microsoft Vista, Windows 7 or 8 as operating system, please not
e that you need to run the uninstaller using administrator rights explicitly. In
order to do so, please right-click on the command "Uninstall Match!" in the "Ma
tch! 2" subfolder, then select "Run as administrator" from the context menu.
Alternatively, you can also open the "Control Panel" from the "Settings" folder
in the Windows "Start" menu. Afterwards, double-click on "Software" (on some ope
rating systems called "Add/Remove Programs) in order to bring up the normal Wind
ows software installation dialog. In the list, please mark "Match! 2", then clic
k "Change/Remove". As soon as the uninstall program has been opened, please clic
k "Ok" in order to remove Match!.
9. Online Support
----------------In case of trouble with Match!, you can quickly access the most recent support
documents on the Crystal Impact Web site ("http://www.crystalimpact.com/match/")
by selecting "News", "Update", "Known Bugs" or "Support" from Match!'s "Help" me
nu.
Of course, you can also send an e-mail to support@crystalimpact.com
You might also want to visit the Match! web page from time to time:
http://www.crystalimpact.com/match/index.html
10. Time-limited license
----------------------As long as no valid license file is installed, Match! will run as a full-feature
d
but time-limited "evaluation version": You can use Match! for 60 days after you

have installed it for the first time, without having to purchase a license.
The expiration date of your evaluation period is displayed on the right-hand sid
e of
the status bar at the bottom. Besides this, You can view this date in the "About
"
dialog which can be opened by selecting "About Match!" from the Match! "Help" me
nu.
After the expiration date, Match! will refuse operation until a valid license is
installed. If you would like to continue using Match!, please contact Crystal Im
pact
(address see below) in order to obtain the full version !
