Internet of Things Trends to Watch in 2015

1. Security & Privacy: Trust and authentication must be
considered across all elements of the IoT, including
devices, the networks, the cloud, and software apps

2. Standards: Competing proprietary and open source

standards efforts continue to struggle to come together for
common good. Perhaps we will see breakthroughs in 2015.

3. Hardware: Advanced Microcontrollers, Systems on

Chips, and Sensor technology is enabling new types of IoT
devices. These devices are also getting smaller, smarter,
and cheaper.

4. Software: A huge rush of activity occurs as developers

increase their focus on developing IoT platforms and
solutions that upload data from sensors and perform the
analytics necessary to deliver the insights required for
business decisions.

5. Edge Analytics: Increasingly, analytics capabilities will

be pushed to the edge of networks. Advanced analytics
and dashboards will be needed to provide insights from all
the things.

6. Machine to Machine (M2M) Automation: In the

future, sensors, devices and whole IoT systems will be

talking to each other, providing insights and making
decisions without human intervention.

7. Platform to Platform Integration: Movement from
vertically-oriented closed platforms towards open systems and
platforms that support multiple applications

8. Wearables: A key sub segment within the overall IoT market.

Watch developments in systems on chips, sensor hubs, sensor
fusion, low-power wireless connectivity, battery life and
specialized software development platforms.

9. Sensor Fusion: Combining data from different sources can

improve accuracy. Data from two sensors are better than data
from one. Data from lots of sensors is even better!!!

Consumer Electronics Show 2015

10.Sensor Hubs: Sensor hubs, critical with wearables, are used

to offload tasks from the application processor, which cuts down
on power consumption to improve battery life in the devices

11.Big Data: These things (sensors, chips, computers) will

produce even more data than we have now, taxing our already
complex enterprise Information Management systems.

12.Blockchain: Using blockchain technology, developers can

set up a distributed model that doesnt require trusting every
node in the network

15. New Business Processes Required: IoT enables new

automated sense and respond systems, disrupting traditional
processes

16. Education Needed: Increased demand for education and

skills training related to Sensor Networks, how to implement
them and what to do with the data collected.

17. Product Design: Consumers/Customers will increasingly

expect products to come with embedded sensors that can
connect to mobile devices and IoT systems

IEEE

18. Bandwidth: As more devices come online, networks will clog

and service providers will be in a never ending battle to
increase network capacity

19. Vertical Clouds: Aggregating all this big data and acting on
its findings will best be achieved by capturing, analyzing and
responding from the cloud. In 2015, expect specialized and
vertical oriented IoT cloud services.

20. Industry Partnerships: Traditional IT vendors will

greatest value added from the IoT
will initially be manufacturing,
healthcare providers, insurance, and
banking and securities. Gartner
Consumer demand for convenience,
product availability, and personalized
and contextualized interactions will
drive retailers to adopt multiple IoT
technologies. IDC

The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing manufacturing as we know it. Factories and plants
that are connected to the Internet are more efficient, productive and smarter than their nonconnected counterparts. Forbes
The aging population and cost pressures on in-hospital care is driving a need for healthrelated IT scenarios that include remote patient monitoring, self-diagnosing kiosks in
pharmacies, and other mobile healthcare apps that will drive next-generation services,
consequently the healthcare sector could experience explosive IoT growth. IDC

There are many other related terms around the IoT Trend topic
Machine to Machine (M2M)
Machine to Machine (M2M) refers to technologies
that allow both wireless and wired systems to
communicate with other devices of the same type..
M2M is considered an integral part of the Internet of
Things (IoT) and brings several benefits to industry
and business in general as it has a wide range of
applications such as industrial automation, logistics,
Smart Grid, Smart Cities, health, defense etc.
mostly for monitoring but also for control purposes.

The Web of Things

The Web of Things (WoT) is a set of

software architectural styles and
programming patterns that allow realworld objects to be part of the World
Wide Web. Similarly to what the Web
(Application Layer) is to the Internet
(Network Layer), the Web of Things
provides an Application Layer that
simplifies the creation of Internet of
Things applications. Wikipedia

Sensor
A sensor is a device that detects events or changes in quantities and provides a corresponding
output, generally as an electrical or optical signal. Wikipedia
Wireless Sensor Network
A wireless sensor network (WSN) of spatially distributed autonomous sensors to monitor physical
or environmental conditions, such as temperature, sound, pressure, etc. and to cooperatively pass
their data through the network to a main location. The more modern networks are bi-directional,
also enabling control of sensor activity. Wikipedia
Ubiquitous Computing
Ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) is a concept in software engineering and computer science where
computing is made to appear everywhere and anywhere. Wikipedia
