2. EXTRA-EU TRADE KEY FINDINGS

The European Union is a net exporter of scaffolding equipment. In physical terms,
exports consistently exceeded imports from 2008 to 2013. However, the difference in
their trade balance was more significant in value terms due to high export prices.
Between 2009 and 2013, the EU market of equipment for scaffolding, shuttering,
propping and pit propping showed mixed dynamics, reaching 2.4 billion EUR, yet
dropping by 1.3% to 1.8 million tonnes.
Output of the five major producers of scaffolding equipment in the EU, namely Germany,
Italy, Poland, France and Spain, represented more than 67% of total production in 2013.
In Poland and Italy, production levels increased by 8.8% and 7.2% annually from 2009to 2013. The balance of the countries showed mixed dynamics: Germany (+4.1%),
France (+0,1%) and Spain (-8.2%).
EU imports experienced mixed dynamics in the last seven years. The significant drop in
2009 (44.5% Y-o-Y) was followed by a sharp increase over the next three years. The
average annual growth rate of EU imports from 2009 to 2013 was 7.1%, in value terms.
In 2013, China (77.4 million tonnes), the United Arab Emirates (40.6 million tonnes) and
India (16.8 million tonnes) were the main suppliers of scaffolding equipment into the EU
and together made up 71% of total imports. While the share of the United Arab Emirates
and India increased significantly, the share of the Russian Federation illustrated negative
dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the
analyzed period.
