Advanced digital PLC system

Power Line Carrier -PLC- is one of the most widespread, reliable and cost-effective transmission systems
for the service telecommunications of the Power Utilities.
Thanks to its great reliability and its optimum quality/price ratio, this system is widely used in the service
telecommunications for the transmission of both data and voice signals, for remote control and
teleprotection.
The integration of the most advanced remote control equipment and voice & data service on packet
networks has led to stronger and stronger needs of frequencies utilization and of maximum band
optimization: high-speed data channels management has thus become unavoidable to guarantee a very
reliable solution.
Therefore the last main evolution in the field of PLC has been the introduction of digital systems
allowing the best optimisation of bandwidth, in order to guarantee the simplest management of voice,
video and data convergence and the highest link quality regardless of the line length.
These advanced digital PLC systems are able to transmit the following bit rate ranges using discrete
steps realised by Trellis Code Modulation and FEC (Forward Error Correction) technologies.
STED systems also overlap transmission and receipt on the same band through the echo cancellation.
A further main advantage of this systems is the possibility to be equipped with several tools, allowing it
to be suited to each customers need:
an integrated multiplexer with drop/insert function allows STED to be used as an access node in
TDM networks;
an integrated router makes it possible to integrate STED also in IP networks;

a dedicated interface allows STED working as a carrier of SELTA teleprotection equipment.
