Working to prevent further runoff. Miller, environmental experts, and a statecertified remediation firm are coordinating closely with the DEP and have stopped
further runoff into Slagle Run and Conewago Creek.
Setting up a temporary structure for holding runoff water. As part of the cleanup effort, Miller has now erected a large above ground tank which will be used to
contain water pumped from the affected area before arranging for its removal.
Closely monitoring Conewago Creek. The DEP is in the process of testing the
Conewago Creek to monitor contaminants and how quickly they dissipate. The
oxygen levels have improved.
Background Information
About Millers Hanover Operation
The company was founded in 1937. Its products are sold domestically and in over
90 foreign countries.
Fortunately, no one was inside the building at the time and no injuries occurred while
the fire was suppressed. Local authorities confirmed that, although smoke was
generated by the fire, air testing during the course of the fire found it to be non-toxic.
Conewago Creek
In order to extinguish the fire, firefighters applied large amounts of water and some
foam to the site. On Monday evening, there also was a 1 inch rain event, adding to
the water runoff.
Some of that water overflowed from a runoff retention pond dug by the remediation
firm and flowed to the Conewago Creek.
The DEP has confirmed that the runoff of water from the Miller site has not
contaminated the water systems of local municipalities.
The DEP has stated that runoff from the Miller site reduced the concentration of
oxygen and increased the presence of nitrogen compounds in the Conewago Creek,
which appears to have resulted in the fish kills that were observed.
Once again, Miller wishes to express its deepest thanks and appreciation to all those
who are involved in responding to this accident, and will provide further updates as
progress continues.
