Retainingwallshallbedesignedtowithstandlateralearthandwaterpressures,includinganyliveanddeadload
surcharge,theselfweightofthewall,temperatureandshrinkageeffect,liveloadandcollisionforces,andearthquake
loadsinaccordancewiththegeneralprinciplesofAASHTOSection5andthegeneralprinciplesspecifiedinthis
article.

SituationsexistwheretheuseofMSEwallsiseitherlimitedornotrecommended.Someobstaclessuchasdropinlets,signtrusspedestalsor
footings,andfencepostsmaybeplacedwithinthereinforcingstriparea,however,theseobstaclesincreasethedifficultyandexpenseof
providingsufficientreinforcingstripsforstability.BoxculvertsandhighwaydrainagepipesmayrunthroughMSEwalls,butitispreferablenot
torunthepipesclosetoorparalleltothewalls.Utilitiesotherthanhighwaydrainageshouldnotbeconstructedwithinthereinforcingstriparea.

BecautiouswhenusingMSEwallsinafloodplain.Afloodcouldcausescouringaroundthereinforcementandseepageofthebackfillmaterial.
Soilreinforcementsshouldnotbeusedwhereexposuretogroundwatercontaminatedbyacidminedrainageorotherindustrialpollutantsas
indicatedbyalowpHandhighchloridesandsulfatesexist.Galvanizedmetallicreinforcementsshallnotbeusedwherestrayelectricalground
currentscouldoccuraswouldbepresentnearanelectricalsubstation.
Sufficientrightofwayisrequiredtoinstallthereinforcingstripswhichextendintothebackfillareaatleast8ft.,70%ofthewallheightoras
perdesignrequirements,whicheverisgreater.Finally,barriercurbsconstructedoverorinlinewiththefrontfaceofthewallshallhaveadequate
roomprovidedlaterallybetweenthebackofthewallfacingandthecurborslabsothatloadisnotdirectlytransmittedtothetopwallfacing
units.
ConcreteCantileverWallonSpreadFooting
Concretecantileverwallsderivetheircapacitythroughcombinationsofdeadweightandstructuralresistance.Thesewallsareconstructedof
reinforcedconcrete.
ConcretecantileverwallsareusedwhenMSEwallsarenotaviableoption.Cantileverwallscanreducetherockcutrequiredandcanalso
providesolutionswhentherearerightofwayrestrictions.Concretewallsalsoprovidebetterstructuralcapacitywhenbarriercurbsontopofthe
wallsarerequired.
Counterfortsareusedonrareoccasions.Signboardtyperetainingwallsareaspecialcaseofcounterfortretainingwalls.Theyareusedwherethe
soilconditionsaresuchthatthefootingsmustbeplacedwellbelowthefinishedgroundline.Forthesesituationsthewallisdiscontinued12in.
belowthegroundlineorbelowthefrostline.Counterfortsmayalsobeacostsavingsoptionwhenthewallheightapproaches20ft.(Foundation
AnalysisandDesignbyJosephE.Bowles,4thed.,1988).However,otherfactorssuchaspoorsoilconditions,slopeoftheretainedsoil,wall
lengthanduniformityinwallheightshouldalsobeconsideredbeforeusingcounterforts.
ConcreteCantileverWallonPileFooting
Concretecantileverwallsonpilefootingsareusedwhenthesoilconditionsdonotpermittheuseofspreadfootings.Thesewallsarealsoused
whenanendbentrequireswingslongerthan22feet.Inthesecasesastubwingisleftattachedtotheendbentandtherestofthewingis
detachedtobecomearetainingwall.
ConcreteLShapedRetainingWallonSpreadFootings
ConcreteLShapedwallsarecantileverwallswithoutheels.Thesewallsareusedwhentherearespacelimitationsforcantileverwalls.Since
thereisnoheeltheheightofthesewallsislimitedtoabout7ft.dependingonthesoilconditionsandtheslopeoftheretainedsoil.
LShapedWallsareoftenusednexttoroadwayswherethefootingsarefrequentlyusedasshouldersandwherethewallwillrequirestructural
capacityforcollisionforces.

reinforcementwhendrivingpileforthebridgesubstructureatendbents(s).CMPPSshallhaveaninsidediametergreaterthanthatofthepileand
largeenoughtoavoiddamagetothepipewhendrivingthepile.ThebottomoftheCMPPSshallbeplaced5ft.min.belowthebottomofthe
MSEwalllevelingpad.Thepipeshallbefilledwithsandorotherapprovedmaterialafterthepileisplacedandbeforedriving.CMPPSshallbe
accuratelylocatedandcappedforfuturepileconstruction.
Alternatively,thecontractorshallbegiventheoptionofdrivingthepilesbeforeconstructionoftheretainingwallandplacingthewall
reinforcingandbackfillmaterialaroundthepiling.Thecontractorshalladequatelysupportthepilingtoinsurethatproperpilealignmentis
maintainedduringthewallconstruction.Thecontractorsplanforbracingthepileshallbesubmittedtotheengineerforreview.
Pilingshallbedesignedfordowndrag(DD)loadsduetoeithermethod.OversizedCMPPSwithsandplacedafterdrivingmaybeconsideredto
mitigatesomeoftheeffectsofdowndrag(DD)loads.OversizedCMPPSshallaccountforpilesize,thermalmovementsofthebridge,pile
placementplan,andverticalandhorizontalplacementtolerances.
TheminimumclearancefromthebackfaceofMSEwallstothefrontfaceoftheendbentbeamshallbe3ft.9in.(typ.).The3ft.9in.
dimensionisbasedontheuseof18in.CMPPS&FHWANHI1024,Figure517C,whichwillhelpensurethatsoilreinforcementisnot
skewedmorethan15fornutandboltreinforcementconnections.Othertypesofconnectionsmayrequiredifferentmethodsforsplaying.Inthe
eventthatthe3ft.9in.dimensionorsetbackcannotbeused,thefollowingguidanceforCMPPSclearanceshallbeused:CMPPSshallbeplaced
18in.clearmin.fromthebackfaceofMSEwallpanels12in.minimumclearanceisrequiredbetweenCMPPSandlevelingpadand18in.
