Management Message

The New Energy at Escorts

ndia today stands at the cusp of change.

The sinews of this New India will emerge
from new roads, new rail networks, greater
mechanization and productivity. And the
critical tools for actualising these projects
are agricultural, construction and railway
equipment three sectors that Escorts is
proud to be associated with.
In the last few months, the nation has
witnessed the winds of change brought
in by the new government at the centre.
With the future looking opportune and
positive, Escorts too has infused a new
energy into its business operations. We are
now aggressively addressing segments
that will open up with the implementation
of the governments ambitious plans in
infrastructure, farm mechanization and
railways.
In the agriculture sector, despite an initial
fear of drought, the onset of late rains has
put things in the right direction. Through
a spate of recent interactions, Escorts has
committed itself to strengthening our
technology leadership by understanding
the customers better and developing
solutions for their discerning needs.
Our new products have been successful
in creating new market segments and
tapping into a wider range of customers
for our tractors, both in the farm and
non-farm segment. In the global market,
our business strengthening alliances
with industry leaders such as Carraro,
Porsche Consulting, Porsche Design,
Perkins, ZF, and Bosch are helping us take
the technology leap, and offer globally
benchmarked products at Indian prices.
There has been a marked improvement
in the sentiment around the construction
industry due to the announcement of
major infrastructure programs. Escorts is
strengthening its product portfolio to meet
the aspirations of its customer base with
higher dependency on mechanization and
technology. We have recently launched the
Digmax II our new backhoe loader that is
highly fuel efficient, more productive and
packed with host of new exciting features.
In the category of pick-n-carry cranes, we
continue to hold an undisputed market
leadership position. And, with the launch
of the TRX series, the new edition of safe
cranes, this position should only get better.

In the railway equipment business, we

have introduced seven products in the
last two years. Our indigenously-designed
Bogie Mounted Brake Systems have
successfully completed the 18-month
trial period of Indian Railways, and are
now ready for commercial launch. We
have also entered into major technology
transfer agreements with Bode AG
(Germany) for automotive doors and
with Toyo (Japan) for high-end air spring
suspension systems. To capitalize on
the opportunities presented by the
re-emerging railways market, we have
replaced legacy equipment with eight
high-end CNC machines, strengthening
process efficiency and product quality.
Overall, there is a greater internal focus on
manpower rationalization and material
cost optimization to ensure we are at
par with the industry standards. We
implemented Group-wide future-oriented
VRS, aimed particularly at restructuring
Escorts Auto Products. This largest-ever
VRS at Escorts was availed by a large
number of employees and will enable
greater efficiencies and productivity due to
rationalization of deployment. VRS offer
was part of an overall Group-wide
strategic initiative to make Escorts a
leaner and smarter organization.
Through this, we have sought
to become even more
focused on productivity
and improve our
organizational
efficiencies.

On the manufacturing front, we have

embarked on ambitious programs that focus
on lean management and consolidation of
manufacturing facilities. Our commitment to
Total Productive Maintenance has brought
about a cultural transformation on our shop
floors. Workers are now demonstrating
greater ownership and accountability, leading
to enhanced process efficiency and cost
reduction. With these planned initiatives
and a new energy driving us, Escorts is now
moving towards the next phase of expansion
and growth. We remain committed to our
greater purpose of building an organization
that delivers prosperity and livelihood to the
doorsteps of our countrymen. n

Positive Market Sentiment to steer Future Performance

ith the Modi government

announcing expansive plans for
farm mechanisation, infrastructure and
railways, Escorts is ready to capitalise
on the opportunities presented by the
turnaround the nation is hopeful about.
In these exciting times, the organisation is
rallying around the corporate vision and
purpose building the nation through
world class technology and infrastructure
solutions to leave a bigger footprint in
the verticals we operate.
Escorts Limited recently announced its
results for the second quarter of the
2014-15 financial year. The company
reported a net profit of Rs 26.3 crore in
first half ending September 30, 2014. The
first half saw a flat turnover of Rs 2,121.7
crore as against Rs 2,120.2 crore in the
corresponding half year ending September
2013. EBIDTA was at Rs 90.4 crore in the
first half of the year as against Rs 157.2
crore in the first half of the previous fiscal.
The company recorded an increase of 1.2%
in tractor volumes from 14,842 tractors
in the corresponding quarter ended
September 30, 2014 to 15,013 tractors
in the second Quarter of fiscal 2015.
Construction Equipment volumes also
increased to 747 units, an increase of 13
per cent over the corresponding quarter.
Total income for the quarter was up at Rs
992.6 crore as opposed to Rs 944.2 crore
in the corresponding quarter of last fiscal.
Company absorbed the additional onetime exceptional expense of Rs 31.4 crore
on account of a VRS that covered around
350 employees As a consequence, the
company recorded a loss of Rs 7.9 crore in
the second quarter. EBIDTA for the quarter
stood at Rs 33.5 Cr. As against Rs 64.5 Cr. in
Quarter ended September 2013.
In the first two quarters of this financial
year, the fear of drought created undue
pressure on the agricultural ecosystem.
However, late rains in many parts of the
country should set things right in the
next quarter. In the construction business,
NHAIs ambitious task of awarding 8,000
km of road projects in 2014-15 coupled
with its taking over 28,000 km of roads
(semi-urban and rural) to convert them
into 4- and 6-lanes will catalyse the
demand for our equipment. Consequently,

we are aggressively working on

strengthening our product offerings to
meet the discerning demands of such
projects. Our Railways business posted
strong growth with sales increasing by
11% to Rs. 47.3 crore in quarter ending
September 2014 against Rs. 42.7 crore in
the quarter ending June 2014.
Speaking on the results, Chairman Mr.
Rajan Nanda said, The past two quarters
have been quite tough due to delayed
monsoons followed by indifferent
monsoons in Escorts key markets. While
we did see a modest surge in demand
in September sales which were almost
10% higher, the first half has had little
to cheer about. However, with the new
government hitting its stride and general
optimism in the economy, we have seen
some positive movement in sectors
such as infrastructure, as is reflected in
our construction equipment business.
We are also expecting things to look up
in the Railway products portfolio given
the ambitious plans of the government
for increasing wagons and modernizing
railways. We also intend to launch new
products and technologies over the rest of

game changers in the long run.
Mr. Nikhil Nanda, Managing Director
added, While the industry has been hit,
Escorts has forged multiple strategies
to deliver profitability and growth.
There is renewed focus on cash flow
management, streamlining of cost and
enhanced efficiency measures with the
support of strategic consultants. Through
a successful VRS offer, we have a leaner
organization that is geared for greater
efficiencies. The continued thrust on
lean management and consolidation of
manufacturing facilities has long term
implications for profitability. We have also
created a roadmap for launch of a series
of new products that are pathbreakers.
Our new products & technology have
been successful in creating new market
segments and tapping into a wider
range of customers. Escorts Construction
Equipment is also registering strong
growth and we expect this trend to
continue into the second half of the fiscal.
We are well prepared to take advantage of
market opportunities and we see a much
better second half coming up. n

Apart from this, vendors also have clear

a set of methodologies, processes and
technologies that provide historical,
current and predictive views of business
operations. It has proven to be a highly
useful tool for the senior management
and decision-makers by offering functions

allowed for barcoding of thousands
of storage bins for easy and efficient
inventory management. Movement
of components is traceable in the
ERP system, fostering easier asset
reconciliation during audits.
Streamlining Processes
One of the biggest enablers of
streamlining operations at Escorts was the
implementation of Enterprise Resource

Planning (ERP) in 2012. ERP systems allow

managers to review sales, costs and other
operating metrics on one, integrated
software platform, usually in real time. The
Escorts ERP system replaced many legacy
systems like plant maintenance, warehouse
management and systems in other
functional areas, thus making internal
processes more efficient and cost-effective.
The ERP was envisaged to create a shared
services model for Escorts, wherein the IT,
commercial billing, costing, management
reporting, and finally, finance operations
were consolidated across the Group.
Today, material purchase information is
seamlessly shared across divisions, such as
which materials are purchased from which
vendor and at what price.

Technology has also given speed to
our operations, by allowing businesses
to respond to changes instantly.
This improved response time almost

potential issues by allowing businesses to

Expert Speak
The evolution of Information
Technology in Escorts has been
instrumental in bringing in
transformational changes to the
operating culture by enabling
consolidation, transparency,
accountability and seamless
access to business critical
data. Strategic IT initiatives
like Business Intelligence have
changed the perception about
business realities and helped
the organization take informed
decisions. Along with business, IT
is firmly placed to take Escorts on
a truly transformational journey.
Mr. Vipin Kumar
Group CIO, Escorts Limited

consolidation of accounts. Consolidation

of financial statements, which was
previously considered a very cumbersome
task due to different ERPs functioning in all
divisions, has now been standardized and
managed centrally. This has had a direct
impact on finance month closing, thereby
increasing the process efficiency by 50%.
ERP users in the company have witnessed
marked increase in productivity, efficiency,
and proper controls with respect to checks
and balances incorporated within the
entire Escorts ecosystem.
Fostering Relationships
With Customer Centricity as one of the
organisations Strategic Values, Escorts is
widely using IT to improve the way we
design and manage customer relationships.
Dealer portals and post-sales claim
and warranty applications are already
implemented to give seamless experience
to our dealers and customers. Our Customer
Relationship Management (CRM) systems
are being designed to capture every
customer interaction in order to enable
enriching experiences in the future. Enquiry
management, issue resolution, customer
support mapping & data management, etc.
are just some of the features of CRM that
will help offer the customer a better and
more focused experience.

Apart from our customers, Escorts also

dearly values its internal relationships
with employees. Technology has
enabled employees to stay connected
with each other through Intranets,
employee portal, mobile-enabled email
and web-enabled internal applications. To
further enhance employee engagement
& experience, a new payroll and human
resource management software is under
implementation. These initiatives have
allowed our people to get the right
information first-hand and forge stronger
associations within teams.
Data Storage & Security
Without comprehensive infrastructural
support, running critical IT-enabled
applications becomes a huge challenge.
To mitigate this risk and ensure our
applications functioned successfully,
Escorts established a central data centre
in its corporate office. Built using stateof-the-art infrastructure and based on
Green IT concepts, the data centre offers
better security of servers and data,
provision for consolidation of servers,
scalability to house ever-growing number
of servers, central monitoring team, and
more. The centre has also facilitated the
implementation of Group-wide backup
and restoration policies and creation of

a Disaster Recovery Site for all our critical

servers. The setting up of this data centre
has allowed Escorts to establish a central
infrastructure backbone on which multiple
projects for the entire Group are now being
executed with minimum expenditure.
When it comes to managing documents,
the days of large storage rooms and
rows of filing cabinets will soon be
over. Growing in sync with modernday business ecosystems, Escorts too
is undertaking a gargantuan exercise
of creating and storing digital versions
of documents on servers through a
Document Management System. The
system is not only helping us store
and maintain a tremendous amount of
historical data economically, but also
benefiting our employees with immediate
access to the documents they need.
Storage aside, the security of business
critical data is one of the essential tasks
that are being ably actioned through the

use of Information Technology. Data Loss

Prevention application is serving as the
tool to enable securitising of information
contained in companys documents, on
computer systems, as well as in transit.
By cataloguing data in order of criticality,
DLP helps the company protect sensitive
information from leakage or infringement.
Through a system of alerts and notifications,
the application keeps all teams and
managers informed of data exchanges
in real time, thereby strengthening the
security of the entire network.
Escorts has come a long way on its welldefined IT roadmap, with a clear vision
of enhancing our overall operational
efficiency, reducing cost and streamlining
inter-departmental functioning. With
several other IT-enabled applications
in the pipeline, the company is looking
at the future with a progressive and
transformational outlook. n

Touching New Heights of Excellence

scorts is aggressively working to

accomplish its goal of becoming the
most profitable Indian tractor company
by 2016. The company is investing in
advanced technology and international
alliances such as Porsche and Agritalia
to develop innovative, high-quality
products and solutions that will cater to
discerning needs of the modern Indian
farmer. Moreover, initiatives such as Total
Productive Maintenance are guiding us to
enhance our manufacturing efficiency and
yield higher levels of productivity.
However, to become profitable, we cannot
solely depend on the products we create
and sell; we have to be equally efficient in
the way we spend. To reach new heights
of excellence, Escorts is proud to launch
Shikhar, a project dedicated to fostering
sourcing, engineering and procurement
efficiencies of the company. Initiated by the
Materials team of Escorts Agri Machinery,
the project aims at benchmarking global
standards, institutionalising world-class
sourcing practices, instilling a lean supply
chain, and developing internal capabilities
for the future.

Focus Areas
Shikhar focuses on three core areas
design, procurement and supply
chain management. In design, we are
concentrating on value engineering
by reworking on product features so
as to bring more value to customers at
a lesser cost. At the supplier end, we
have already executed a comprehensive
vendor consolidation process that
involved vendor assessment, training
and development, as well as rewards and
recognition. This has not only brought
flexibility in the supply chain, but has
also led to procurement of right quality
inventory at right cost.

A Transformational
Journey
Since its launch, the project has generated
immense enthusiasm among employees,
who see it as a big step towards
improving EBIDTA margins and enhancing
profitability.
With a team of 12-14 full-time members
and several part-time contributors,
Shikhar is expected to play a key role in
transforming the companys purchase
operations and take us closer to our
vision being among the top engineering
companies in India. n

Boosting Service with

efficient Spare Parts Delivery

or six long decades, Escorts has played

a pivotal role in the countrys labourintensive agriculture sector by pioneering
the concept of farm mechanization.
Whether it is the farmers workhorse the
tractor, service or spare parts, we have,
time and again, introduced products
and solutions that have helped farmers
produce more and earn more. India is the
fourth largest agricultural market in the
world with an annual market of 630,000
tractors. Although the tractor industry
has achieved a 12% CAGR volume growth
over the last 10 years, there is still a huge
unaddressed potential in the country. On
the one hand, we have states like Punjab,
which has the highest tractor penetration
in India (65 tractors per 1,000 hectares),
and on the other, there are states like West
Bengal with a penetration of just about 6
tractors per 1,000 hectares.

In such an optimistic market scenario,

timely availability of good quality service
and original spare parts is not a choice but
a grave necessity. A farmer who spends
his lifes earnings on his tractor simply
cannot afford to have his machine lie idle
due to non-availability of a spare part. It
is here that the Escorts Agri Machinerys
Spare Parts Division plays a key role in
connecting the dots.

Collaborations with world-class logistics

agencies have ensured that we deliver up
to 74% of criticalities on the same day, and
up to 90% of criticalities within 48 hours
of a request. Moreover, a stringent focus
on internal process controls has helped
us streamline order booking and reduce
delivery time by about 12 hours.

Right Place at Right Time

Escorts Spare Parts has been optimally

using technology and automation to
strengthen its delivery mechanism. We
have a dedicated online portal for order
booking of criticalities by our channel
partners. Our comprehensive electronic
catalogue serves as a one-stop parts
shop for the end customer. With the help
of our dealers and channel partners, we
are constantly working on improvising
our online services, so that we can reach
customers with original spare parts in the
shortest possible time.

We understand the farmers need for

continued uptime and hence ensure he
faces minimal hassles during his work day.
Rated Best in Class by a globally-reputed
rating agency, Escorts Spare Parts is
redefining the standards of parts delivery
in the Indian tractor industry.

Technology as an Enabler

Apart from the actual delivery, Escorts is

investing itself into building a systematic
forecasting capability to reliably
forecast demands of various spares. The
forecasting model shall take into account
the seasonality of demands, as also other
market trends and factors. A combination
of Enterprise Forecasting Application as
well as strategic planning of Supply Chain,
the system will help us become more
efficient and scalable.

To boost customer experience, Escorts

has also launched an online portal that
facilitates direct logging of customer
complaints. The portal facilitates 100%
monitoring and tracking and ensures
that claims are disposed of within three
working days.
Rewarding Loyalty
The biggest challenge in spare parts
business lies in connecting with the large
base of local tractor garage owners, who

influence customers buying decisions.

Loyalty of these mechanics keeps on
changing depending upon price, margin
and availability.
To connect with this important link with the
end customer, Escorts Spare Parts Division
undertook a path-breaking initiative, Escorts
Humdum. This loyalty programme connects
the mechanics emotionally with Escorts
through a bonanza of fascinating rewards
and gifts on purchase/recommendation of
Escorts Tractor Original Parts (ETOP).

The Escorts Humdum initiative is touted

as a great tool for gathering district-wise,
season-wise, and product-wise parts
consumption data at the mechanic level,
which helps us devise the right strategies
in the spare parts business.
At the same time, the programme also
works as an anti-counterfeit measure,
which ultimately benefits the end
customers with assurance of original parts
delivery. n
