Analysis the characteristic of content of English course book in

11th grades SMK 10 November in Sidoarjo

CHAPTER I
BACKGROUND
Background of the Study
In today's era of modernization of education is a necessity for the public to
communication. Language education is one means of communication in society.
English is one language that is used throughout the world. In fact, it is important
in the modern era like now to learn the English language to communicate with
each other.
English a foreign language, as we need a lot of references to learn. In
education, instead of teaching a language teacher should also teach culture. The
teacher should also consider the needs of their students in learning the English
language. A teacher should adjust the usefulness of the language for their future.
For example; a teacher who teaches in a public school, will be different from the
teacher teaching a vocational school (SMK /MAK). To support this kind of
learning course book is required. In choosing a course book, the teacher should
also notice the level of course book, course book used, the type of material,
written is in the book, etc. (Alan cunningswort, 1995)
English in vocation school (SMK/MAK) has a fairly focused context, but
vocational school itself has several kinds of majors, such as engineering, and
secretary. And here is not to clearly differentiate the curriculum for English
language education, both for mechanical engineering at vocational school, or even
a secretary. The effectiveness of the student to learn the language, eventually
located to the teacher creativity, whether the teacher will add additional material
to accommodate the needs of students specific to vocational school, or the teacher
will modify the context of the material to be taught to fit the needs of students.
The book will also be of interest to teacher trainers and to those under
taking training course for EFL or ESL. A need-analysis survey of teacher training

in TEFL/TESL showed that employing institutions and others with an interest in


the content of teacher training courses considered course book evaluation to be
one of the most important components of a teacher training course (Alan
cunningswort, 1995)
Based on these problems, then the teacher should really selective in
choosing a course book for students. This study aims to determine the use and
usefulness of English course books in the vocational school. The teacher should
know what is in need of their students.
Research Question

How do the contents of English course book in 11th grades of SMK 10
November in Sidoarjo contribute to their comprehension on health education?

The Purpose of the Study


The purpose of this study is to know the contents of English course book
and also to determine the use and usefulness of English course books in SMK 10
November at 11th grades in Sidoarjo to the students comprehension on health
education.
Scope and Limitation
The research is more focused and does not extend from the discussion in
question; the researcher makes limitation in this study. The scope and limitation
of the problem in this research are that this research is conducted to determine the
contents of the English course book that is in use by 11th graders of SMK 10th
November in Sidoarjo and its contribution to the students comprehension on
health education. The study is conducted in SMK 10 November in Sidoarjo. This
study only researches the content of the English language books used in SMK on
10 November in Sidoarjo.
Significance of the Study

The results of the study are hoped to give benefits for teachers, the
researcher, and the other researchers:
1. For teacher
The teacher can be more selective to choose English course book for
students. The course book should be based on student needs and the course
books should contribute to their future. The teacher should apply some
considerations to choose the English course book for the students.
2. For students
The students are expected to be easier to learn the English course book
based on their needs and the English course book should be in accordance
with their future.
3. For researches
