Chapter 1: Stress
Q1.
Determine the average normal stress in each of the 20-mm diameter bars of the truss. Set P =
40 kN.

Figure Q1
[Answer: (avg)BC=159MPa; (avg)AC=95.5MPa; (avg)AB=127MPa]

Q2.
The hangers support the joist uniformly, so that it is assumed the four nails on each hanger
carry an equal portion of the load. Determine the smallest diameter of the nails at A and at B if
the allowable stress for the nails is allow = 28 MPa. The hangers only support vertical loads.

Figure Q2
[Answer: dA=3.77mm; dB=3.95mm]

Chapter 2: Strain
Q3.
The piece of plastic is originally rectangular. Determine the shear strain xy at corners D and
C if the plastic distorts as shown by the dashed lines.

Figure Q3
[Answer: (C)xy=(D)xy=0.0116 rad]

Q4.
The triangular plate ABC is deformed into the shape shown by the dashed lines. If at A, AB =
0.0075, AC = 0.01 and xy = 0.005 rad, determine the average normal strain along edge BC.

Figure Q4
[Answer: BC=5.98(10-3)]

Chapter 3: Mechanical Properties of Materials

Q5.
The aluminum block has a rectangular cross section and is subjected to an axial compressive
force of 36 kN. If the 37-mm side changed its length to 37.5033 mm, determine
(a) Poissons ratio
(b) the new length of the 50-mm.
[Take Eal = 70 GPa]

Figure Q5
[Answer: (a) =0.321; (b) h=50.000178 mm]

Q6.
The elastic portion of the tension stress-strain diagram for an aluminum alloy is shown in the
figure. The specimen used for the test has a gauge length of 50 mm and a diameter of 12.5 mm.
If the applied load is 50 kN, determine the new diameter of the specimen. The shear modulus
is Gal = 28 GPa.

Q7.
The copper shaft is subjected to the axial loads shown. Determine the displacement of end A
with respect to end D if the diameters of each segment are dAB = 20 mm, dBC = 25 mm, and
dCD = 12 mm. Take Ecu = 126 GPa.

Q8.
The hanger consists of three 2014-T6 aluminum alloy rods, rigid beams AC and BD, and a
spring. If the hook supports a load of P = 60 kN, determine the vertical displacement of F.
Rods AB and CD each have a diameter of 10 mm, and rod EF has a diameter of 15 mm. The
spring has a stiffness of k = 100 MN/m and is unstretched when P = 0. (Take Eal = 73.1 GPa)
