The trend of outsourcing animation content
to Asia is increasingly being tapped by North
American film and television program
producers. The major factor behind this shift
of computer animation production to the
Asia/Pacific region continues to be the
availability of low cost, powerful computer
animation platforms and much lower labor
rates in the Asian and Pacific Rim countries
compared to North America and Europe. The
bulk of the outsourcing happens for 2D
animation content with some amount of 3D
content.

Communication, Real Estate, Renting and
Business Activities, and Other Community,
Social and Personal Service Activities.

Animator

Basic Educational Requirement

An Animator creates the illusion of motion


thru drawings and movement of images to
convey a meaning or a story. The Animator
heavily relies on his/her artistic ability,
although there is a growing need to be
familiar with technical computer packages
(animation software). Animators work in
2D animations (such as cartoons), 3D model
making animation, or computer generated
animation.

Even a high school graduate can be an Animator


provided he/she has the artistic ability to sketch/
draw and has good imagination. This is what they
call the entry-level Animator. However, to be a Key
Animator, certain trainings on the following
subject matters will be useful: graphic design/
illustration, 2-D and 3-D design, art and design,
spatial design, film and video, multimedia and
computer-aided design. Some of these trainings are
offered by some animation companies to their
entry-level Animators.

Tasks

Skills and Competencies

Creates storyboards that visualize the


script and narrative;
Builds up detailed frame-by-frame
visuals with accuracy, designs models
from a wide range of materials from
modeling clay, plaster, oil paints, water
colors to acrylic as background, sets,
characters, objects in the animation
environment; and
Develops the timing and pace of a
character or objects movements during
the animatic and ensures they follow the
soundtrack and audio requirements.

Artistic ability to sketch/draw;


Good imagination;
Knowledgeable in artistic design/illustration,
2D & 3D design art and design, spatial design,
film and video, multimedia and computer aided
design; and
Familiar in the use of technical software (Flash,
3D studio max, Maya, Lightwave, Softimage
and Cinema 4D).

Physical Attributes and Characteristics

Imaginative and patient;


Have an eye for details; and
Have excellent attitude (i.e. flexible, patient,

conscientious, resourceful, team worker,


organized and disciplined).
Salary/Compensation
In the local labor market, salary for
Animators ranges from P8,000 to P12,000
per month while key animator receives
P15,000 to P25,000 per month.
Overseas, an Animator receives an average
annual salary of $58,030 or $4,836 per
month. A Key Animator, on the other hand
has an average annual pay of $64,000 or
$5,333 per month.
Prospect for Career Advancement
An Animator with 2-3 years of experience
can qualify for the position of Key Animator
after undergoing additional training in an
advanced course. He/She must also possess
supervisory, coaching and leadership skills.
Employment Opportunities
Most of the Animators are employed in
multinational companies which operate
both here and abroad. However, job
opportunities should be best for those with
the most trainings and skills. There are
demands for highly skilled Animators in the
