INTRODUCTION
Pursuit of happiness is a reality based movie which is on the life of a person Chris Gardner.
Who was jobless in the early 1980`s.Due to his one miss judgment he lost all the savings of his
family. He lost his house, wife and even it was too hard for him to look after his son at that time
he worked very hard for his survival and now today he is the CEO of his own company. As of
2006, he is CEO of stockbrokerage firm, Gardner Rich & Co, based in Chicago, Illinois, where
he resides when he is not living in Toronto. Gardner credits his tenacity and
success to the "spiritual genetics" handed down to him by his mother,
Bettye Jean Triplett, born Gardner, and to the high expectations placed on
him by his children, son Chris Jr. (born 1981) and daughter Jacinta (born
1985). Gardner's personal struggle of establishing himself as a stockbroker
while managing fatherhood and homelessness is portrayed in the 2006
motion picture.

1.1 PLOT:

In 1981 San Francisco, Chris Gardner (Will Smith) invests his

family's savings in portable bone-density scanners which he
tries to demonstrat e and sell to doctors. The investment proves
to be a white elephant, which financially breaks the family and
as a result, his girlfriend Linda (Thandie Newton) leaves him
and moves to New York. Their son Christopher (Jaden Smith)
remains with his father. While downtown trying to sell one of

his scanners, Chris meets a manager for Dean Witter

and impresses him by solving a Rubik's Cube during
a short cab ride. Chris does not have enough money
for the cab fare and flees the cab driver into a subway
station where he barely escapes the cab driver but
loses one of his bone scanners in the process. This
new relationship with the Dean Witter manager earns
him the chance to become an intern stockbroker.
Despite arriving there unkempt and shabbily dressed
due to an emergency, Chris is offered the internship.
Chris is further set back when his bank account is garnished by the IRS for unpaid income taxes,
and he and his young son are evicted. As a result they are homeless, and are forced at one point
to stay in a bathroom at a subway station. Motivation drives him to find the Glide Memorial
United Methodist Church, which has a homeless shelter primarily for single mothers and their
children. But she tells him about a local church that also provides shelter, but has very limited
space. Due to demand for the limited rooms, Chris must frantically race from his internship work
early each afternoon in order to land a place in line. Concluding his internship, Chris is called
into a meeting with his managers. His work has paid off and he is offered the position. Fighting
back tears, he rushes to his son's daycare, hugging him. They walk down the street, joking with
each other and are passed by a man in a business suit (the real Chris Gardner in a cameo). The
epilogue reveals that Chris went on to form his own multi-million dollar brokerage firm.

1.2 PRODUCTION:
1.2.1 DIRECTOR:
GABRIELE MUCCINO (born 20 May 1967) is an Italian film director. Born
in Rome, He gained success with films such as L'ultimo bacio (One Last Kiss)
and Remember Me, My Love (Ricordati di me). He is currently making a
switch to directing Hollywood films after L'ultimo bacio won the Audience
Award for World Cinema at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival bringing him to
the attention of the American film industry.
1.2.2 SCREENPLAY:
STEVEN CONRAD (born 1968) is an American screenwriter, film producer
and director at age 19 he sold his first screenplay, Wrestling Ernest
Hemingway, adapted from a short story he had written for a creative writing
class.
1.2.3 LEADING ROLE:
WILL SMITH also known by his stage name The Fresh Prince, is an
American actor, producer, and rapper. He has enjoyed success in television,
film and music. In April 2007, Newsweek called him the most powerful
actor in Hollywood. Smith has been nominated for four Golden Globe
Awards, two Academy Awards, and has won multiple.Smith moved from
television to film, and ultimately starred in numerous blockbuster films. He

is the only actor to have eight consecutive films gross over $100 million in the domestic box
office and the only one to have eight consecutive films.
1.2.4 SUPPORTING ROLE:
JADEN SMITH made a cameo along with his older brother Trey Smith
in the 2002 sequel of Men in Black. Smith then made his major role
debut in the 2006 film The Pursuit of Happyness as Christopher, the son
of Will Smith's character.
THANDIE NEWTON made her film debut in Flirting (1991). While
filming she struck up a friendship with Nicole Kidman, now a lifelong
friend. She played the role of Brad Pitt's maid Yvette in Interview with the
Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994).
1.2.5 RELEASED BY:

Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. (CPII) is an American film production and distribution
company. Columbia Pictures now forms part of the Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group,
owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment, a subsidiary of the Japanese conglomerate Sony. It is one
of the leading film companies in the world, a member of the so-called Big Six. It was one of the
so-called Little Three among the eight major film studios of Hollywood's Golden Age.
1.2.6 DEVELOPMENT:
Chris Gardner realized his story had Hollywood potential after an overwhelming national
response to an interview he did with 20/20 in January 2002. He published his autobiography on

May 23, 2006, and later became an associate producer for the film. The unusual spelling of the
film's title comes from a sign Gardner saw when he was homeless. In the film, "happiness" is
misspelled (as "happyness") outside the daycare facility Gardner's son attends.
The movie took some liberties with Gardner's true life story. Certain details and events that
actually took place over the span of several years were compressed into a relatively short time
and although eight-year-old Jaden portrayed Chris Jr. as a five year-old, Gardner's son was just a
toddler at the time.
1.3 RELEASE:
The film debuted first at the North American box office, earning $27 million during its opening
weekend and beating out heavily promoted films such as Eragon and Charlotte's Web. It was
Will Smith's sixth consecutive #1 opening and one of Smith's consecutive $100 million
blockbusters. The film grossed $162,586,036 domestically in the US and Canada, In the hope
Gardner's story would inspire the down-trodden citizens of Chattanooga, Tennessee to achieve
financial independence and to take greater responsibility for the welfare of their families, the
mayor of Chattanooga organized a viewing of the film for the city's homeless. [3] Gardner himself
felt that it was imperative to share his story for the sake of its widespread social issues. "When I
talk about alcoholism in the household, domestic violence, child abuse, illiteracy, and all of those
issuesthose are universal issues; those are not just confined to zip codes.

2. METHODS

2.1 GROUP REVIEWS:

In this session we watched the movie as group being critics not for the sake of fun we noted all
the plus and minus points, discussed them to conclude fruitfully. The movie is reality based and
focuses on the issue of joblessness. It wants to make us learn that we should be optimistic rather
than pessimistic. Happiness can never be achieved but only be pursued.

2.2 CRITICS REVIEWS:

The film received generally positive reviews by critics. Film review site Rotten Tomatoes
calculated a 66% overall approval based on 166 reviews, and it scored a 66% Top Critics rating
from major news outlets.
In the San Francisco Chronicle, Mick LaSalle observed:
"The great surprise of the picture is that it's not corny The beauty of the film is its honesty. In its
outlines, it's nothing like the usual success story depicted on-screen, in which, after a reasonable
interval of disappointment, success arrives wrapped in a ribbon and a bow. Instead, this success
story follows the pattern most common in life it chronicles a series of soul-sickening failures
and defeats, missed opportunities, sure things that didn't quite happen, all of which are
accompanied by a concomitant accretion of barely perceptible victories that gradually amount to
something. In other words, it all feels real."

Manohla Dargis of The New York Times said:

"a fairy tale in realist drag . . . the kind of entertainment that goes down smoothly until it gets
stuck in your craw . . . It's the same old bootstraps story, an American dream artfully told,
skillfully sold. To that calculated end, the film making is seamless, unadorned, transparent, the
better to serve Mr. Smith's warm expressiveness . . . How you respond to this man's moving story
may depend on whether you find Mr. Smith's and his son's performances so overwhelmingly
winning that you buy the idea that poverty is a function of bad luck and bad choices, and success
the result of heroic toil and dreams."
Brian Lowry said
The film is more inspirational than creatively inspiredimbued with the kind of uplifting,
afterschool-special qualities that can trigger a major toothache . . . Smith's heartfelt performance
is easy to admire. But the movie's painfully earnest tone should skew its appeal to the portion of
the audience that, admittedly, has catapulted many cloying TV movies into hits . . . In the final
accounting, it winds up being a little like the determined salesman Mr. Gardner himself: easy to
root for, certainly, but not that much fun to spend time with."

3. DISCUSSION

In this section we are going to discuss all the things that the movie emphasiss either directly or
indirectly.

In 1980 America was passing through critical economic condition their deficits were
greater than the entire budget of 1960, Ratio of joblessness increased. Chris starts his
career through such situation. How a country man of America struggle to achieve the

American ideal status.

During his passage to success he lost many things, He loses his wife, home and all the
savings he had. Even in homelessness he brought his son up, meanwhile his struggle to

get the job of Stock Broker.

Entrepneur is always a risk taker results may be good or bad. Here Chris takes risk faces

failure due to his bad luck and bad choices.

In front of Dean Witter Chris meets a stock broker with a luxury car , get impressed and
asks him How did you do it?.In his response he gets inspired to get internship to the

Dean witter school of stock broker.

According to Thomas jafferson That may be happiness is something that can only
pursue.

Will Smith does well in a more dramatic role than his usual fare.

4. CONCLUSIONS

In Pursuit of Happyness, Will Smith plays Chris Gardner, a motivated man living on the
last of his means. Chris is constantly looking for a consistent quality of life, but seems to get

beaten down at every road. A few times throughout the movie, Gardner expresses his thoughts on
happiness, and whether or not it is actually attainable. Happiness can be looked at ways, but we
will outline two of them:

Short-Term happiness

Long-Term happiness

Short-Term happiness is achievable by anyone. Regardless of your age, gender, social status,
economic status, etc. It can be experienced every day. We may not notice, but feelings of
happiness occur often throughout our lives, we just need to know how to look for it.
we all have our long-term goals, set with the intention of making us happier. We tell ourselves, I
am going to finally be happy when I achieve this goal. But when the goal is achieved, the
happiness soon goes away, and we are looking for more things to make us happy. Long-Term
happiness is very difficult to notice; and is a gift of living

5. RECOMMANDATIONS

Movie must be as every viewer feels himself to be a performer.

At the end of movie there must be a glimpse of Chris present status.
To develop and maintain the viewers interest there must be a little bit thrills in the
movie.

Source of motivation of chris should be Explained well to inspire the youth.

Sense of Humor can make low pace movies interesting.
