Overview of the Asian

Coatings Industry

he Asia Pacific Coatings Show will be held in Bangkok September

12-13. This is the leading coatings event in Southeast Asia and
the Pacific Rim. Raw materials suppliers and equipment manufacturers for the coatings industry will be promoting the latest paint
and coatings technologies for the regions environmental, manufacturing and industrial needs.
Charles Bangert and Scott Detiveaux of Orr and Boss take a close
look at this region in their article State of the Asian Coatings Industry:
2013 and Beyond (page 38). This in-depth article offers insight into this
important and fast growing region. Orr & Boss estimates that in 2012
the global coatings industry was $110 billion, with the Asia Pacific region
representing approximately $44 billion. Within this region China is the
largest producer of coatings with slightly more than $21 billion per year.
India also continues to see dramatic growth in coatings production and
has recently emerged as the second largest producer and consumer of
coatings within Asia Pacific.
The article explores market trends and driving forces for growth in the
coatings industry, identifies key players and offers insight into whether opportunities still exist for Western companies looking to gain a foothold in
the Asian marketplace. This is certainly a must-read for all our readers.

Sherwin-Williams Acquisition of Comex Put on Hold

In an unexpected turn of events, Sherwin-Williams planned acquisition
of Comex has been blocked. While many assumed the Sherwin-Williams
acquisition of Comex was a done deal, on July 18 Mexicos anti-monopoly
agency ruled, in a three-to-two vote, against the acquisition. The ruling was
based on the argument that the deal would leave S-W with approximately
60 percent of the Mexican paint and coatings industry, making it five to
10 times larger than its closer competitor. Our Latin America correspondent, Charles Thurston explores this unexpected turn of events in his article
Sherwin-Williams Deal for Comex Must Change (page 22).
This will surely be a closely-watched issue by insiders in the paint and
coatings industry. It will be interesting to see what Sherwin-Williams next
move will be.

Kansai Plascon Announces African Acquisition

Africas number one coatings company, Kansai Plascon Africa Limited has
partnered with Astra management and
staff to acquire a 63.25 percent interest in the issued share capital in Astra
Industries Limited, from the Finance
Trust of Zimbabwe Limited. The deal,
worth approximately $5.5 million, will
place Kansai Plascon at the head of the
coatings market in Zimbabwe. The acquisition shows Kansai Plascons faith
in Zimbabwe, which is in the process
of rebuilding its economy, as well as
the confidence it places in the experienced management team that heads up
Astra, according to the firm.
Astra Paints, Astras major subsidiary, is Zimbabwes leading paint company. The other operating subsidiary
is Astra Chemicals, which markets
and distributes a diversified range of
chemical products to industry. Astra
Paints is currently the largest paint
manufacturer in Zimbabwe and has
two operating factories in Harare and
Bulawayo. Astra Paints also holds
40 percent of the market share in
Zimbabwe, with an especially strong
footprint in Harare and Bulawayo.
Kansai Plascon reports that one of
its key strategies is to expand its leadership position into the rest of Africa. The
inclusion of Astra Paints in Zimbabwe
further strengthens Kansais presence in
Southern Africa, as it already has factories and brand presence in Botswana,
Namibia, Zambiaand Malawi. Where
Kansai Plascon does not have a factory in a region, it exports out of South
Africa into retail outlets and directly
to contractors. It has been exporting to
various countries in Africa since 2004
including: Mozambique, Seychelles,
Mauritius, Kenya and Nigeria.
Hiroshi Ishino, president of Kansai
Paint, indicated that it has been Kansais
intention to invest in Africa through
its holding in Kansai Plascon. This investment, he said, is the first major

acquisition since Kansai Paint acquired

Freeworld in 2011.
According to Kansai Plascons chief
executive officer, Nauman Malik, the
acquisition of Astra Paints, Zimbabwe,
will further entrench Kansai Plascons
leadership position as the number
one coatings company in Africa. The
acquisition will allow the organization to focus further on its expansion

plans and its aim to continue leading

the industry.

Business Corner Strategies & Analysis

Vertical, Horizontal Or Lateral...

Which Way To Market?
by Phil Phillips, PhD
Contributing Editor
phillips@chemarkconsulting.net

A vertical market is a market in which

vendors offer goods and services specific to an industry, trade, profession, or
other group of customers with specialized needs. It is distinguished from a
horizontal market, in which vendors offer a broad range of goods and services
to a large group of customers with wide
range of needs, such as businesses as a
whole, men, women, households, or, in
the broadest horizontal market, everyone. -Wikipedia

he single defining characteristic

of the participants in a vertical
market is competition within a
well-defined segment. Coatings, paints,
adhesives and sealants would be defined
as vertical markets.
Horizontal market participants often
attempt to meet enough of the different
needs of vertical markets to gain a presence in the vertical market. Their similar
products/services tend to be less of a fit
but also less expensive than specialized,
vertical participant solutions.
The general chemicals supply business
would be regarded as a horizontal market
due to its a broad range of industries and
government sectors purchase services.
Therefore, a vertical market can be
two things, though by definition, one
should be sub-grouped as an affinity market. In industry, the vertical markets are
those where there is a common interest,
often exploited by the advertising media. Trade Magazines fit well into this
category with Whats New in Industry
addressing coatings and paints as a sector, Coatings World addressing the narrower vertical coatings and paints.
Horizontal Markets or Horizontal
Marketing is found where you take little or no notice of what people do for

a living. Everyone needs spreadsheets,

so you sell them to all types of business.
Expensive spreadsheet solutions such as
n dimensional pivot tables will only
appeal to companies which do advanced
statistical analysis and visualization, but
as they could be in any manufacturing
or service sector, this is still a horizontal
market. The buyers occupy a niche in it!
Lateral marketing is a work process
which, when applied to existing products or services, produces innovative new
products and services that cover needs,
uses, situations or targets not currently
covered. As a result, lateral marketing
leads to new categories or markets.
What justifies lateral marketing?
Vertical Marketing, by itself, leads to markets that are fragmented and saturated.
The goal of Lateral Marketing is to create
an entirely new market. Lateral marketing lets marketers develop an entirely new
product that finds a much wider audience.
The evolution of markets and the dynamics of competition: The effective use
of Lateral Marketing creates customers
the real impression that needs are more
than satisfied, they are hypersatisfied*.
When companies continue to segment the
market, markets will be too small to serve
profitably. The challenge in marketing today is to fight against fragmentation and
saturation. The priority must be to find
new methods to create and launch more
successful products.
Traditional
Marketing
Thinking
Marketing starts by studying consumer
needs and figuring out how to satisfy
them, then determining who is the market. Markets are born with a first brand
that creates the category. The first two entrants in the category usually captures 75
percent of the market. Companies continue to segment the market so it becomes
more fragmented and saturated.
Innovations Originated from Inside a
Given Market: These innovations consist of continued variations on what the
product or service is but do not intend

16 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

to modify its essence. The innovations

occur within the category in which they
compete (they assume a fixed market).
The end result is still fragmentation and
a small share of the total market.
Lateral Marketing as Complement to
Vertical Marketing: Lateral Marketing
transforming products for satisfying new
needs and situations not considered before.
It creates a new market. Lateral marketing:
works best for mature markets, creates markets from scratch, is riskier, requires greater
resources, anticipates high volume, and may
redefine mission and business focus.
Lateral marketing creates new categories in one of four ways: A lateral product
can restructure markets by creating new
categories or subcategories. It can reduce
the volume of other products within the
given market. It can sometimes generate
volume without hurting other volume. It
may take volume from other categories.
How to Apply The Lateral Marketing
Process? Be prepared to generate a displacement. Choose a product or service
you market and make sure it is one you
have difficulty competing. Break the
product into pieces using the scheme of
vertical marketing, then look for the gap
with lateral thinking: substituting, inverting, combining, exaggerating, eliminating, or reordering the product or service.
Lateral Marketing at the Market
Level: A market level contains several
dimensions where a product or service
competes: need, target, and occasion
(combination of place, time, situation,
and experience). What we are doing is
substituting one of the dimensions of the
market for another that was discarded.
Lateral Marketing at the Product Level:
There are 6 techniques: Substitution (removing one or several elements of the product and changing it). Combination (adding
one or several elements to the product and
maintaining the rest). Inversion (saying
the contrary or adding no to an element
of the product). Elimination (removing
an element of the product). Exaggeration
August 2013

Strategies & Analysis Business Corner

(exaggerating upward or downward one
or more elements). Reordering (changing the order or sequence of one or more
product or service elements).
Lateral marketing can be used to
diversify marketing mix by applying
existing pricing, distribution, or communications formulas that correspond
to other existing products or services and
that are not naturally associated with the
category you compete in. Example: coffee
vending machines have applied the credit
card concept to selling coffee.
Principles for successful lateral marketing: Companies need to continuously
innovate, not just tweak an existing
product, to grow and prosper. A high
percentage of new products fail in spite
of careful market research and planning.
The reason for the innovation crisis lie in
the traditional innovation process. Most
new products offer just a specialized version of something already on the market.
Repeated application of vertical thinking results in a hyperfragmented market.
Marketers need a complementary way of
thinking about new products or services
that will lead to new categories or markets.
Lateral thinking uses a distinct framework
and processes that can be taught and become a part of companys culture.
An innovative company is characterized by several systems: An idea market, a capital market, or a talent market.
Companies have an idea market if they
have a system for actively soliciting,
collecting, and evaluating new ideas.
Funding must be set aside to support idea
evaluation as well as to train employees
in thinking laterally.
Within the paints and coatings industry, both lateral and vertical marketing
are important. In understanding which is
most appropriate in a given circumstance,
remember that innovations that come
from vertical marketing are easier for
customers to assimilate and understand
while lateral marketing innovations need
more time for assimilation.

requires fewer resources

doesnt depend on high volume

PPG Introduces Dragonhide

Heavy-Duty Polyurea
Protective Coatings
PPG Industries industrial coatings business has added Dragonhide heavy-duty
coatings to its lineup of polyurea-based
protective coatings for trucks, commercial vehicles, heavy-duty equipment
and other demanding applications.
DragonHide heavy-duty coatings are

designed to solve the toughest coatings

challenges. Developed as a value alternative to extreme-duty Durabull coatings,
which are based on a similar chemistry,
DragonHide coatings are well-suited to
protect beds, cabs, bumpers, step guards
and body and underbody parts for pickup trucks, tow trucks, dump trucks, buses,
trailers and heavy-duty equipment used
in agriculture, forestry and construction.
DragonHide coatings, which are available in eight standard colors with color
matching available, also are ideal for
trailer interiors or applications such as
stair treads and walkways in buses with
available non-slip aggregate. Because of
their elastomeric nature, coatings based
on polyurea resins such as DragonHide
and DuraBull coatings can withstand
more impact, chipping, abrasion and
gouging than other tough coating technologies, according to the company.
A proprietary resin blend and patented cross-linker developed by PPG enable the coatings to cure rapidly, which
makes them much more tolerant to
moisture during the curing process than
typical urethane coatings. Consequently,
they can be applied on the production
line or in the field with a reduced risk of
defects caused by moisture and humidity.
DragonHide and DuraBull coatings are
made without solvents, so they are nonflammable and free of volatile organic
compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air
pollutants (HAPs). They also offer an
environmental advantage by eliminating
the need to bake parts after coatings are
applied, which reduces energy use during
the coating process.

Mexicos leading paint producer Comex
for $2.3 billion, Sherwin-Williams is
aggressively pursuing alternative routes to
the purchase, CEO Christopher M. Connor
has vowed. The Mexican anti-monopoly
agency, Comisin Federal de Competencia
(CFC), finally ruled on July 18 in a threeto-two vote split against the acquisition announced November 12. Meanwhile, the CFC
is headed into vacations and possible membership restructuring.
The CFC decision was based on the arguments that the deal would leave S-W with a
majority control about 60 percent of the
Mexican paint and coatings industry, and
that it would be six to 10 times larger than its
closest competition. The CFC has not made
its 144-page decision public yet. S-W has 30
working days to respond to the CFC position,
following the delivery of some 20,000 pages
of documents to the commission supporting
the initial deal.
S-W or Comex could sell off some assets to
make the deal more palatable to the CFC, which
is concerned about the viability of its paint industry, including some 375 manufacturers and
some 15,000 direct points of sale across the
country, according to the national trade group
Asociacion Nacional de Fabricantes de Pinturas
y Tintas (Anafapyt). In contrast, Comex network of 3,200 points of sale are operated by
some 875 concessionaires.
In an earlier U.S.-Mexican merger proposal, a sell-off was necessary. Beer brewers
ABI and Grupo Modelo spun off some assets
to Constellation Brands to make the $20 billion
deal palatable to the U.S. Justice Department
earlier this year.
Comex CEO Marcos Achar, reacting to the
CFC decision, said that a negative decision
by the CFC would affect $1 billion worth of
investments his company has already made.
He clarified that his companys national paint

22 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

and coatings market share amounts to only

40 percent with all segments combined. The
companys architectural segment share is
approximatley 53 percent, wood finishes is
about 30 percent, waterproofing is about 30
percent, and industrial and marine is about
18 percent, Achar noted in local interviews
following the CFC decision. S-W only holds
about six percent of the Mexican architectural segment, which seems to be the focus of
the CFCs resistance.
Comex produces paints and coatings in
16 North American locations, including
eight in Mexico, five in the United States
and three in Canada, through its acquisition
of PPI several years ago. Out of the companys $935 million revenues, 65 percent came
from architectural segment sales, 25 percent
from industrial sales and the remainder from
all other segments. Comex enjoys something
of a sweetheart relationship with Mexicos
national oil company Pemex, for which it
has helped develop paint and coatings quality standards that are utilized at times as a
de facto national standard.
Comex also exports to the Caribbean, where
it has been building a network of more than
90 stores. Among countries in its network there
are: Belize; Costa Rica; El Salvador; Guatemala;
Honduras; Nicaragua and Panama.
Achar also complained that the CFC,
which will go into a two-week vacation period, could change its member composition
upon return, and that changes to the national anti-monopoly law also are pending that
could affect the case. The current head of
the CFC is Eduardo Prez Motta, a staunch
pro-competition diplomat who has served as
Mexicos representative to the World Trade
Organization and who led the European
Union-Mexico free trade agreement negotiations. Prez earned a Masters in economics at
the University of California at Los Angeles,
and carried out doctorate studies there. CW

Nanomaterials Regulations Present Challenges

A growing
number of EU
governments are

espite the current slowdown in the

European economy, the regions regulators have not been easing up on the
application of health, safety and environmental
rules in the markets for coatings and its raw
materials. Even new rules are being introduced
to make compliance tougher for coatings producers and their suppliers.
The regulatory challenge for the coatings
sector has tended to come from European
Union legislation whose main objective is
to ensure that the EUs single market in
products and services is not hampered by
trade barriers.

24 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

However, a growing number of EU governments are posing problems for the European
coating sector by introducing their own regulations, which are threatening to undermine the
single market.
The main objective of these regulations
is the control of nanomaterials whose safety
has been an issue of growing concern among
NGOs, politicians and some groups of consumers in Europe.
But these national initiatives are worrying some European coatings companies and
their raw material suppliers that have become
technological leaders in the application of
nanomaterials.
The European Commission, the EUs
Brussels-based executive that is responsible for
putting forward EU legislation for approval by
the European Parliament and the governments
August 2013

Europe International Coatings Scene

of the EUs 28 member states, has been
taking a cautious line on nanomaterials.
Two years ago the Commission decided on a definition of nanomaterials
that was criticized by NGOs and some
politicians for not being tight enough
or for being too imprecise. Under
the definition nanomaterials would
have to contain 50 percent or more of
nanoparticles sized between one nanometers and 100 nm, although with
some nanomaterials of specific health
and safety concerns, this percentage
could be reduced.
In a review of nanomaterials issued
in October, 2012, the Commission concluded that a case-by-case approach
should be adopted for their risk assessment. But it did acknowledge the need
for more public information to be made
available through facilities like registries of nanomaterials on a national or
sector level.
Some national governments have
now introduced or are drawing up their
own regulations on the registration
of nanomaterials in the belief that the
Commission has been moving too slowly
on the issue.
The French government has been implementing since May a new law which
requires producers, users and distributors to submit annual declarations to its
Environment Ministry on the identity,
quantity and uses of nanomaterials supplied to other businesses, including professional painters.
The objective of the French decree
is to ensure traceability of nanomaterials
(and) greater transparency of information available to the public on nanomaterials, said Veronique Garny, product
stewardship director at the European
Chemical Industry Council (Cefic),
Brussels, the chemicals sectors main EU
trade association.
One difficulty with the regulation is
that substances must have been intentionally manufactured as a nanomaterial to
be defined as a nanomaterial, she added.
The decree leaves it to the manufacturer
to decide whether something has been
manufactured for the purposes of functioning as a nanomaterial.
However, nanomaterials producers

and users currently have no standardized

measuring method for general application
with nanomaterials. This makes identification of nanomaterials particularly complicated for coatings formulators using a
wide range of chemicals.
There are accepted methods for
measuring specific nanomaterials but
these cannot necessarily be applied to
other nanomaterials, explained Sonia
Benacquista, a products management
specialist at the French chemicals industries trade association (UIC) This
regulation is a national initiative which
discriminates against French companies
because of the additional burden it creates. It could also hamper innovation.
Belgium has been following the example of the French government by issuing
draft legislation last month (July) for a
national registry of nanomaterials, which
would start to come into effect at the beginning of 2015.
In addition to information about
the identity and characteristics of
nanomaterials, producers, users and
distributors may also have to provide
information on the possible dangers
and exposures of certain nanomaterials if they are considered to be a risk to
health or the environment.
Compliance with the legislation could
be a big challenge to Belgian coatings
companies who buy their raw materials
from outside the country.
Many of our members are SMEs
who will have to rely heavily on information received from their suppliers,
said Theo de Jaegher, regulations, safety
and environment advisor to the Belgian
federation of paint and ink manufacturers (IVP). Obtaining this information
could prove to be a complicated and
difficult exercise. At the moment it is extremely hard to calculate or even give
an estimate of the extra administrative
costs.
Denmark has just started a public consultation on the creation of a national
registry of products and mixtures like
formulations containing nanomaterials,
while the Netherlands and Sweden have
been making similar moves.
In Germany the government has
been finalizing a draft regulation on

August 2013 www.coatingsworld.com

food materials that mainly applies to

chemicals in inks and coatings on food
packaging. But it also covers coatings
on household equipment and appliances, which have the potential to contaminate food.
The regulation potentially severely restricts the use of nanomaterials in coatings. These will effectively be permitted
only if their producers and distributors
can provide evidence that the nanomaterials cannot migrate in potentially dangerous amounts into food.
With France already having a regulation on nanomaterials and other EU
countries now planning to do the same,
selling products containing nanomaterials in the EU is going to become a nightmare, said Garny. It will have a very
negative effect on the single market.
The European Commission has been
tentatively preparing to establish an
EU-wide nanomaterials register.
Its
research arm, the Italy-based Joint
Research Centre (JRC), has also started
developing a standardizing measuring
method in parallel with the activities of
a nanotechnology working party at the
Paris-based Organisation for Economic
Co-operation
and
Development
(OECD). All this will take some time,
said Benacquista.
Meanwhile there are signs that companies are delaying the introduction of
innovative nano-based products partly
because of the regulatory uncertainties. Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) of
Germany, a major supplier of coatings
materials, has halted production of
and research into carbon nanotubes
(CNTs).
Our CNTs business has been discontinued, Patrick Thomas, BMS
chief executive, told a recent press conference at the companys headquarters.
There is not a big enough market for
CNTs. But, we have the knowledge and
the infrastructure to restart the business, if we want, when there is sufficient demand.
The European coatings industry will
be hoping that regulatory confusion does
not lead to a general standstill in R&D
in performance-enhancing nanomaterials
for the sector. CW

Covering the IP Bases with

Different Types of Patent Claims
by Jonathan D. Hurt, PhD and
Steve McDaniel, JD, PhD
Technology Litigators

nce in a while, you may decide

to try to turn your trade secret
coating formulation into a patent despite the various issues (e.g., sluggish time to issuance, appeal or filing a
request for continued examination) previously discussed in this series. Most inventors of a new coating formulation or

coating component will seek issuance of

what is commonly considered a strong
type of claim to assert: the composition of matter claim. However, there are
other statutory types of claims and variants that you should give strong consideration toward filing, as the nuances in
claims language and prosecution among
the various claim classes may get you to
a more rapid issuance of these less glamorous but still commercially relevant
claims to protect your product. Because
patent prosecution is like opening a box

26 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

of chocolates, you never know what type

of claim structure will be allowed by the
examiner so claim your invention as
many different varieties of claim types as
you can!
First, the classic composition of matter claim. One of the four general types
of patentable inventions recognized by
the United States Patent and Trademark
Office (the PTO). A claim describing a chemical composition or mixture,
such as a paint comprising specific components in particular amounts, e.g., A

paint, comprised of 45%-65% total resins solids of [insert chemical formula of
your new resin]. A clear, crisp claim
that provides solid and commercially
relevant patent coverage. And to be
honest, a rather dull claim type. The
most excitement you get with this type
of claim is during prosecution, when you
often wind up arguing rather thoroughly
with a patent examiner (if the chemical
composition is not new and non-obvious) that the specific ranges of the components are non-obvious because that
specific mixture of components produces
exciting (and non-obvious) unexpected
results. Hint: have that data at your
fingertips to present to the examiner
during prosecution.
Next, the trusty and tough side-kick
to the lead hero composition of matter claims: the process/method claim!
Another of the fab-four recognized by the
PTO, and is used to describe an inventive
combination of actions (contacting,
heating, mixing, etc.) to produce a
useful result. This is often the next best
thing to a composition of matter claim
(or mechanical and apparatus claims, described below), because even though you
may not convince an examiner that a material/device/article is new and non-obvious, you may be able to obtain a claim to
how to make it or how using it in a new
and non-obvious (and profitable) way.
Those unexpected results data can really come in handy for this claim type
as well. Many patents have issued that
were clearly directed to compositions, but
it was the process claims that were ultimately allowed by the PTO. Accordingly,
filing at least one method claim in you
patent application to cover this base may
be a good idea.
But what about cases where you
know how to make a gang-buster hot
product (Ponce de Lens bottled water!), but dont have an exact handle
on the chemical composition (Hey,
I just bottle it from that one pond in
Florida, I dont know whats in it!).
Product by process claims are a variant claim structure that may help you
out. This claim type combines aspects
of composition and process claims to
describe a product by the steps in its

production process. This is allowed for

cases where the product in not definable by other claim structures, such as a
case where a chemical reaction produces a desired material (say a new coat-

or subject to final rejection) than other

claim types, as the component parts of
the device are generally described in a
mechanically the leg-bone connects to
the shin bone clear way. The exam-

ing resin) but the resin produced is a
mixture containing varying amounts of
products from side chemical reactions.
So the exact chemical composition of
the material is unknown, but magic
combination of conditions and materials described in the processing steps to
produce it is known. During prosecution products that are similar, though
produced by a different process, may
get you bogged down in obvious type
rejections without that ability to point
to clear compositional differences.
Recent court decisions regarding how
this type of claim would be infringed
indicate an infringing product would
also need to be produced by the same
process. So, though an interesting and
possibly commercially relevant claim
structure for certain situations, you can
get unique headaches both coming and
going during the patent prosecution/enforcement cycle.
Machine/apparatus claims is another
statutory type, and describe anything
having parts that cooperate (e.g., moving parts), and computers, circuitry, and
mechanical devises are encompassed in
this category. Article of manufacture
claims are the fourth statutory type,
and are similar to apparatus/machine
claims, except the item produced does
not have moving parts (e.g., a pencil).
From experience, these types of claims
can be prosecuted quicker (i.e., allowed

iner lines up your claim language versus the closest art, often another patent
document that is also so written, and
gives the thumbs up or thumbs down.
Unfortunately, the straight-forwardness
that may grant quickly allowed claims
often results in narrow claim language
you rapidly obtain a patent to a very
specific device or article, so there is
room (unfortunately) for competitors
to flourish.
Finally, though there are plenty of
other variant claim types that can be
considered, let me draw your attention
to a claim format traditionally used in
biotechnology patent applications, but
can work well in the paints and coatings industry. Kit claims are directed
to two or more articles not physically
connected but grouped together in, unsurprisingly, a kit. And when you think
about it, kits are often your store shelf
commercial product. For example, a
kit, comprising resin part A, resin part
B and additive C, wherein each resin or
additive is contained in a separate container. Paints and coatings are often
multi-component products that must
remain separate until mixed for immediate application. You sell them as
a kit, not as the final mixture as applied. So, consider adding a kit claim to
more directly protect what you actually
sell on the store shelf coating components in their packaging. CW

The Marine
Coatings Market

Marine coating manufacturers are seeing an uptick in ship repair and maintenance,
which will offset the loss of volume in newbuilding.
Kerry Pianoforte, Editor

lthough the ship newbuilding market continues to be in

decline, the market for marine coatings benefitted from
an increase in ship repair and maintenance. Marine
coatings manufacturers are focusing their efforts on developing
antifouling coatings that will decrease maintenance costs and
increase vessel efficiency.
The marine coatings market grew steadily in 2012 and is
expected to continue to similarly in 2013 and beyond, said
Tim McDonough, USCA marine market director for SherwinWilliams Protective and Marine Coatings. Overall, market
growth is expected to be around four percent globally with Asia
continuing to grow and both Europe and the U.S. flat.
Jotun reported that 2012 was a productive year for them for
marine coatings. Several new products were launched to the
market in 2012, said Tom Evensen, group category manager
antifouling, Jotun Coatings. Notably all major suppliers have
now included silyl antifouling products into their portfolio, a
technology platform that Jotun has promoted and refined for
decades in the market.
In addition, Jotun reported there has been numerous launches

of low-cost solutions to respond to a financially troubled industry where minimizing vessel maintenance cost including
paint investment is a focus area. All in all we experienced
a polarized antifouling market with cost focus on one end and
investment in vessel efficiency on the other. The demand of low
cost antifouling solutions were larger in 2012, meaning that the
average product applied in 2012 most likely did not contribute
to improve the environmental profile of the shipping industry,
Evensen added. For 2013 and beyond we work towards and
anticipate increased awareness of the importance of hull and
antifouling performance with regards to influence on vessel efficiency. Typical energy efficiency reduction due to hull performance ranges between 15 to 20 percent over a docking interval
of 60 months in the market today. We anticipate a transition
towards more premium solutions offering significant savings in
fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions compared to
the current market average.
The newbuilding (NB) market has continued to decline dramatically over the past three years. The NB market in 2012
represented a little more than a third of all marine coatings

sales, said McDonough. When a sizable part of your market is going backward, obviously there is considerable pressure
placed on the remaining sectors. Fortunately, we are seeing an
uptick in ship repair and maintenance, which will help offset the
loss of volume from NB. Many of the vessels completed during
the building boom are now drydocking for their first maintenance cycle.
The potential contribution to improve ship energy efficiency
offers a significant growth potential with regards to transition to
more premium hull coating solutions, according to Jotun. Key
factors to achieve this growth include increased market awareness of the importance of hull performance, said Evensen. In
collaboration with the marine coatings industry Jotun is currently leading the initiative to establish reliable measurability
of hull performance. An historical lack of accurate and reliable
measurability on hull performance has resulted in limited incentive to invest lifetime performance in both newbuilding and
maintenance situations. Hence, such initiative is considered absolutely crucial to increase market awareness and contribute to
growth in the marine coatings market.
Jotun reported that although a reduced new building actively
reduces the demand from yard countries located in northeast
Asia, this area still represents the largest volumes due to new
building and dry docking activity. With regards to locations
of owners and management companies, Europe represents an
important area, said Evensen.

Environmental Regulations
Shipping is global in nature with the result that even regional
and local environmental regulations may have an industry-wide
impact. As we see it the impact of environmental regulation
both recently enacted and on the horizon, on marine coatings is
largely twofold, said Evensen. On the one hand it is making
it technically more challenging to deliver coatings that perform.
At the same time, it is serving to increase the value add associated with higher levels of performance in particular where the
coatings have an impact on energy efficiency. As such, we see
environmental regulations as an important driver of innovation
in the marine coatings market.
Sherwin-Williams is actively developing coatings systems
with lower VOCs, higher solids or waterborne alternatives in
order to provide sensible options for the ship owner. As far as
the emerging markets go, we believe it is just a matter of time before they adopt more stringent regulations, said McDonough.
The difficulties they will face in enacting regulations, will be in
finding the proper balance between the benefit to the environment, the economic impact and the constraints of technology.

Current Trends
Sherwin-Williams has been active in pursuing new technologies.
Higher solids, lower VOC and waterborne coatings remain a
constant focus in R&D. Antifouling technology remains a focus for the marine market where fuel savings can result in a
much lower cost of operation for owners, McDonough added.
Obviously, IMO regulations on ballast tank and cargo oil tank

coatings have put a renewed emphasis on epoxy lining technology that we continue to pursue. Sherwin-Williams strives to be
at the forefront of the next generation and breakthrough technologies that meet needs not yet articulated.
Sherwin-Williams offer ultra-high solids FastClad ER, which
is a single-coat ballast tank system engineered to address the
challenging application issue of coating irregular surfaces inside
immersion service structure. The company reports, its edge retentive epoxy chemistry dramatically extends the service life of a
tank, replacing traditional epoxies which tend to shrink during
the curing phase and can lead to early corrosion.
Drying to walk-on levels in four hours and returning to
immersion service in 24 hours, with Fast Clad ER a dry film
thickness of 20-40 mils can be achieved, added McDonough.
It is now possible to apply a full coat in the morning and begin
touch-up in the afternoon. The result it shortened schedules and
reduced labor costs. It can also be formulated with fluorescing
optically active pigments that enable applicators and inspectors
to easily identify holidays, pinholes, defects and areas with improper film thickness using simple visual inspection tools, thus
preventing costly rework and premature failures.
Also from Sherwin-Williams is solvent-free Dura-Plate 301.
Dura-Plate 301 provides superior adhesion on damp, marginally prepared surfaces, and is designed for situations where users
do not have the luxury of applying coatings on dry, clean, shopprimed steel, according to the company. This includes newbuild
environments where surfaces may be prepared in conditions
where you cant control humidity, completely dry the steel substrate or keep flash rust at low levels, McDonough explained.
Dura-Plate 301 replaces solventborne coatings and abrasive
blasting with a newer, IMO PSPC-type approved method that
can reduce surface preparation and coating application costs by
15 percent and shorten conversion and building schedules.
Jotuns Hull Performance Solutions have been designed to make
it easy to maximize hull performance and thereby reduce both fuel
cost and greenhouse gas emissions. The solutions combine stateof-the-art antifouling and application technologies with reliable
measurability and high performance guarantees, said Evensen.
As part of its Hull Performance Solutions Jotun employs, the at
any time, best coating technologies available in its portfolio.
SeaQuantum X200 is Jotuns first antifouling designed to
maximize initial performance as well as lifetime performance with
no limitations in terms of formulation cost. Efficiency gain of approximately 15 percent on average over a 60-month dry-docking
interval as compared to a market average solution is expected,
said Evensen. This equates to an approximately 13 percent
fuel cost and GHG emission saving if speed is to be maintained
over the interval. The saving is based on comparing guaranteed
minimum performance under a high performance guarantee with
market average performance as estimated in MEPC63-4-8.
Jotun launched SeaLion Resilient in the first half of 2013. It is
product specifically formulated for owners seeking improved maintenance docking efficiency. The properties of SeaLion Resilient
significantly reduce the risk of mechanical damage and maintain
hull condition throughout the service period, said Evensen. By

The overall gain is probably only in the one to two percent
range, Poemer said. The construction industry has started to
show some signs of life but still has a long way to go to reach
2006-2007 levels This is a market where HPP pigments are not
used in any substantial quantity so there are opportunities for
HPPs, particularly for high-end applications. The auto refinish
market has been essentially flat. The auto OEM market has almost regained 2006-2007 levels, so continued growth in this are
will be more along the lines of GDP.
Maria Giannobile, marketing manager, Pigments &
Colorants, Dispersions & Pigments Division, North America,
BASF Corporation, said that despite challenges and unpredictability of HPPs, BASF has seen a slight improvement in overall
demand in comparison to last year.
Market demand continues to vacillate as it is inherently
correlated with the global economy, and tied to critical segments
such as automotive, housing and durable goods, Giannobile
said. Overall, we remain cautiously optimistic regarding the
business outlook as we continue to improve upon our position
by utilizing our broad portfolio.

China Continues to be a Major Consumer

China has emerged as a major consumer of high performance
and special effects pigments, and is seen as one of the markets
where per capital gross domestic product is expected to rapidly
grow, according to Heitzman.
Related to the GDP of the emerging markets of China, India
and Eastern Europe will be the growth in the demand for high
performance and effect pigments for the coatings of durable
goods, buildings, and the automotive sector, said Heitzman.
Sun Chemical and its parent company, DIC, have a strong
manufacturing, technical support, sales and distribution presence in China and have the capability to supply pigments to
global multi-national and local Chinese coatings customers.
Poemer explained that in 2009, Heubach established

Hangzhou Heubach Pigment Ltd., located in close proximity

to Shanghai.
This location has fully equipped laboratories for the coatings, ink and plastics industries to handle any technical service
requirements that our customers may have, he said. This is in
keeping with Heubachs global philosophy of supporting our
products with experienced technical and marketing.
In 2012 BASF moved their global headquarters of their
Dispersion and Pigments division to Hong Kong, in order to
further participate in the dynamic growth of China as a major
consumer.

Increase in Raw Material Prices and

Advantages of HPP
Although the price of raw materials has increased, and continues to do so, Poemer said that so far this year Heubach has not
seen an upward pressure on raw materials that they have seen
in previous years.
Likewise, Wu said that Trust Chem did not see the increase
in prices of raw material as the biggest challenge, but instead in
how to deal with the unstable raw material price and supply,
particularly in China.
Due to the growing environment pressure from the Chinese
government, many raw materials factories have shut down,
which causes an unsteady raw material factories have shut
down, which causes an unsteady raw material price, Wu said.
To respond to this challenge, Trust Chem continues to backward integrate the production of intermediates and try to produce many of the key intermediates themselves.
Heitzman explained that the volatility of the market has
made it difficult for Sun Chemical to insulate customers from
the rise of raw materials costs. Sun Chemical continues to monitor the key raw material indexes and focus their manufacturing
team on process and raw material productivity. They also use
their global reach which provides the flexibility and stability to
minimize impact on raw material increases.

New High Performance Pigments and

Applications
High performance pigments have many advantages. Due to the
added cost associated with them, these types of products must
in turn offer users a wide variety of performance features.
High performance pigments are broadly defined and can
include improved performance in multiple areas versus conventional pigments, Poemer said. Some of these performance
properties can include improved light fastness, chemical resistance, thermal stability and either excellent transparency or
opacity depending on the application. Pricing differentials for
HPPs are smaller now than in the past which increases the overall potential for them to be used in demanding applications.
Giannobile explained that the performance of a pigment is dependent on the application conditions and the end use requirements.
The benefits of using high performance pigments include enhanced durability, color strength, opacity and higher
hiding, she said. For special effect pigments, exceptional

and plastic.
As to the special grade, we launched the PY155 for package inks, plastics and series of low PAA grade for special package application. We now manufacture one of the most complete
lines of Azo condensation pigments in the world, said Wu.
Heubach released Monolite Red 301901 (PV19), which is a
blueish red shade of QuinacridoneViolet pigment. It has superior
lightfastness and durability for high-end industrial and automotive finishes. They also released Vynamon Red 312202 (PR122),
which offers a clean blueish shade of red. It offers excellent fastness and outstanding heat stability. PR122 is used in high-grade
paints, printing inks and plastics. Recently Heubach had this
product FDA listed. Heucroyl, another recently launched line, is
a line of liquid dispersions designed for use in a wide variety of
non-aqueous industrial applications. The colorants can be used
in Alykds, Acrylics, Apoxies, Polyesters, 1k/2k Polyurethanes,
Urethanes, Lacquers, Chlorinated Rubber and many other industrial applications.
Sun Chemical has launched Benda-Lutz Metallic Effects,
which are used for a variety of decorative and functional coatings applications.
This latest addition to the Sun Chemical product portfolio consists of premium aluminum, bronze and zinc pigments in

special effect pigments, including Glacier Crystal White effect pigments which has a bluish pearl appearance effect pigments with strong, vivid sparkle effect at all viewing angles.
At higher illumination angles, it provides stronger sparkling
intensity than competitive pigments as well as extremely high
transparency; Glacier Silk White effect pigments which has
a silky bluish pearl appearance effect pigments with narrow
particle size distribution with maximized lightness flop, reduced graininess with extremely high transparency; Irgazin
Cosmoray Orange L 2950 pigments, a novel, orange organic
pigment based on DPP chemistry enabling a new spectrum

yellow-shade red color spaces; Lumina Royal Copper effect
pigments, which are Mica-based copper effect pigments with
the highest chromaticity and enhanced sparkle characteristics
in the market with better color purity, brightness and luster
compared to pigments of the same class; and Sicopal Yellow
L 1130 pigments, which are designed to meet the needs of the

decorative, industrial and automotive coatings market, a bismuth vanadate pigment offering high color strength, increased
opacity and good durability.

Growth in the HPP Market

According to Trust Chem, there is tremendous potential for
growth for high performance pigments in the electronics, plastics and package ink markets.
Heubach sees the architectural market continuing to grow
and show promise.
As previously mentioned, the architectural market is just
starting to rebound, Poemer said. With the continued recovery of this industry and increased demands of customers on
performance, the HPP pigments have the potential to show considerable growth over the next several years. The automotive
OEM/Refinish and industrial coatings area will in all likelihood
be growing with GDP.
Likewise, SunChemical found that automotive and industrial
coatings would remain the foundation for growth of HPP markets. Despite this, growing requirements for stability and functionality will position architectural and building materials for
tremendous potential growth.
Giannobile agreed explaining that traditional markets such
as the automotive and industrial sectors would continue to be
primary consumers of HPP.
However, we continue to see interior and exterior decorative applications as a high growth area for HPP as increased
interest for materials with improved durability, opacity and
weatherfastness properties are being sought by our customers
in these markets, she said. Used in a wide range of end market
applications from automobiles, house exteriors to electronics
and many more, special effect pigments address demands for
brand and product differentiation as the range of aesthetic color
values continues to expand
Further, we anticipate growth in demand for IR management pigments as rising energy costs and global warming concerns increase the need for solar management solutions within
architectural and construction applications.

New Technologies
Trust Chem has focused on developing low priced intermediates
for HPP in order to have a significant cost reduction, we want
to expand the application area of HPP and replace some classic
pigment in various markets.
Heubach continues to look at the effects of Nano particles
on performance for a variety of their products.
We continue to look for products that will allow us to offer increased opportunities for our customers, Poemer said.
These products would include inorganic products as well
as a further expansion of our high performance organic pigment portfolio. We will introduce a zinc free anticorrosive
with outstanding cost-performance ratio in the near future.
This product will round out our existing range of zinc free
products and will allow us to offer solutions for almost all
kinds of applications. CW

State of the Asian

Coatings Industry:

2013 and Beyond

2013 A Year of Transition for the Global Economy?
Charles Bangert and Scott Detiveaux, Orr & Boss

s is the case in all regions of the world, coatings demand

in Asia Pacific is heavily influenced by a wide array of
economic factors. So before getting into the main theme
of this article, lets first review where we are, or at least where
we think we are, on the state of the global economy. Simply put,
there are two views held by international economists and cable
television pundits on how the global economy is shaping up as
we close in on 2013s final quarter. Those two divergent views
are: (1) the global economy is certainly improving; and (2) the
global economy is certainly still struggling. Each perspective
will be briefly reviewed below.
Supporters of the first view believe that 2013 may very well
turn out to be the much anticipated year of transition for the
economy since the global crisis of 2008 reared its ugly head
and decided to hang around for a while. The certainly improving crowd believes that the world economy is now on a more
positive, better-balanced growth path. Among their observations, they point to the worldwide financial risks that existed
a year ago and have since lessened. In particular, they refer to
the risks stemming from Europes deep financial challenges. In
recent months, their view is that Europe has begun to deal with
these economic troubles head-on and is working through a solution. In the United States, they point to the overall improving
economy, the housing market that is finally back on track, and
the pockets of economic boom occurring from cheap domestic
energy sources resulting from drilling methods such hydraulic
fracturing (fracking). The certainly improving point of view
also highlights the developing regions of the world, such as parts
of Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe, which continue to

show strong economic growth, offsetting the sluggish activity of

the mature economies.
On the other side of the argument, the certainly still struggling crowd believes that the global economy has not yet
shaken off the fallout from the 2008-2009 financial crisis. This
perspective points to the mature economies that are still healing from the deep scars left by events occurring five years ago.
Contrary to the certainly improving point of view, the certainly still struggling group believes that unlike what happened
in 2010 and 2011, the emerging economies were not able to balance out the slack in GDP growth of the mature regions during
2012 as expected, and are probably not able to do so in 2013
either. In fact, this view takes it one step further. It says that the
so-called BRIC economies (the developing economies of Brazil,
Russia, India and China) which were the bright spots for growth
during the 2008 2009 years will now be the contributors to
the somewhat subdued global economic growth forecasted over
the next couple of years.
Like most instances when there are highly divergent opinions the truth in this case probably rests somewhere between
the two views. There is no question that over the past two
years, global growth has not been as robust as anticipated
and in fact has slowed from the previous two years. In
2012, the global economy grew by less than the forecasted
amount at only an estimated 2.9 percent. The euro zones
double dip recession, a more sluggish Chinese performance
than expected and the less-than-stellar performance in North
America all weighed heavily in 2012 on overall growth prospects. However, policy makers on both sides of the Atlantic

earlier this year would appear to have successfully defused
two of the biggest short-term risks to global activitythe
threat of a euro area breakup and a sharp fiscal contraction
in the United States.
Financial markets saw a strong rally throughout most
of the first half of 2013 in response to a variety of factors,
most of which are still somewhat baffling to the market
experts. According to the International Monetary Funds
(IMFs) latest World Economic Outlook (WEO) report, financial stability has improved throughout much of the world
and the developing economies continue to lead the way on
global growth. The IMF has, however, lowered its outlook
for the world economy this year, predicting that government
spending is stifling U.S. growth somewhat and keeping the
euro currency alliance in recession. The IMF recently cut its
forecast for global growth from 3.5 to 3.3 percent for 2013.
Interestingly, the IMF has not adjusted its forecast of 4 percent global growth for 2014 and its higher growth forecasts
for the following couple of years.
Taking into account all of the views presented above and
balancing them accordingly, it is probably correct to say that the
global economy is transitioning into a period of greater stability,
although growth will almost certainly be uneven from region to
region. The advanced economies will likely continue to experience a bumpy recovery while the developing economies, including many within Asia Pacific, will hopefully continue with their
enviable growth rate of recent years.

Overview of the Asian Paint & Coatings

Industry

significant differences in the importance of end use segments

and in the overall size and growth rates of the various countries.
Orr & Boss estimates that in 2012, the global coatings industry was $110 billion on approximately 34 billion liters. In
2012, the Asia Pacific region represented approximately 40 percent of the value ($44 billion) and 47 percent of the volume
(about 16 billion liters). Figure 1 illustrates Asia Pacifics share
of the global coatings industry in both volume and value.
Within this region, China is the largest producer of coatings
at slightly over $21 billion a year. For years, China has been
viewed as an engine of growth for coatings, not within Asia
Pacific but for the global coatings industry as a whole.
India has seen dramatic growth in coatings production over
the last decade and has recently emerged as the second largest
producer and consumer of coatings within Asia Pacific, increasing from 1,205 million liters in 2006 to 2,725 million liters five
years later. In 2012, although India was the second largest producer of coatings in Asia in terms of volume, it was third in
value behind China and Japan. India is experiencing some
of the fastest growth in coatings throughout all of Asia, having
much to do with its rapidly-growing construction and manufacturing industries.
Japan ranks as the number three country in terms of consumption (in volume) within Asia and number two in value
(nearly $7 billion). Japan is larger in value than India even
though its coatings consumption (volume) is lower because of
the higher average price of its coatings due both to product
mix and its higher price points.
The next largest country in terms of consumption within
Asia is South Korea. Australia and New Zealand (known as

Throughout 2012, under contract to the International Paint &

Printing Ink Council (IPPIC), Orr

entitled, Global Paint & Coatings
Industry Market Analysis (2011

in December 2012. An important
chapter of this global coatings report is the one dedicated to the
Asia Pacific region. IPPIC has
kindly agreed to let Orr & Boss
share some of the important findings of the report in this article.
Asia Pacific is an important
and fast growing region within
the global coatings industry.
While Asia Pacific is generally
viewed as one combined region,
it is not a homogeneous group
of countries in terms of coatings consumption. There are

Oceania) have mature, slow growing paint industries, not unlike that of Western Europe, with a very similar end-use structure. Since they are mature economies, rapid growth within
the Oceania region of Asia Pacific is not expected over the next
several years.
Over the last five years, coatings volume in Asia Pacific has
increased by an average annual rate of seven percent. Value
has increased by an annual average rate of 7.5 percent over this
period. The automotive OEM, other transportation, powder
and decorative sectors have experienced the largest increases in
Asia Pacific over the past five years. China grew at a rate of well
over 10 percent per year in terms of both volume and value during this timeframe. Figure 2 depicts the position of Asia Pacific
within the global market as well as the position of the constituent countries within the region.

At the most basic level, industrial coatings demand is a function

of the production of end use OEM products such as cars, tractors, furniture, packaging, etc. Given that China is such a large
percentage of the Asian market, it is important to note that coatings have continued to get a boost from the Chinese governments
investment in infrastructure development, including new bridges,
landmark properties, alternatives energy facilities, nuclear power
generation, hospitals, schools, etc. Hosting world events such as
the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and
the Guangzhou Asian Games has certainly continued to stimulate
large infrastructure projects. Also, much has been made of the
changes in the global automobile industry, with China supplanting the United States a few years ago as the largest car producer in
the world. This transition to the number one automobile market
in the world is simply a microcosm of the shifting manufacturing
landscape around the globe.

Market Trends and Driving

Forces

Economic Influences within the Asia

Coatings Industry
Coatings demand in Asia Pacific is heavily influenced by a
wide array of economic factors. For example, demand for
decorative coatings is affected by new construction, housing
activity and overall affluence. While housing and construction
markets in North America and Europe have languished somewhat in the period following the economic recession, activity
has continued to be strong in China, India and other parts
of developing Asia Pacific. As an example, new construction
spending in the United States declined by four percent from
2009 to 2011. Over that same period, construction spending
in China increased by over 10 percent. This general trend
in construction disparity is projected to continue, although
perhaps not with such a large gap since North Americas construction industry will likely increase and Chinas could cool
down some over the next few years.

In comparison to most developed nations,

China, India and some of the Southeast
Asian countries are more focused on the
low end, low priced coatings segments. An
emphasis on low cost and low priced products and limited R&D capabilities result in a
lower overall level of product quality. Price
is often the first priority, followed by product
reliability or quality.
Despite much of the coatings market in
Asia being lower end, there is an emphasis
being placed these days on R&D efforts
and higher technology formulations due
to the increased importance and growth of
the industrial coatings sector. Many of these
efforts are accomplished through collaboration (i.e., licensing agreements, joint ventures, technology transfers, etc.) between the
multinational and local/regional companies.
For example, within India, applications include performance
coatings for the growing oil & gas and power plant sectors,
packaging coatings for Indias exploding packaged food and
beverage industry, coil coatings for the construction industry,
automotive OEM and refinish coatings, and the conversion of
liquid coatings to powder coatings for a range of durable goods.
Other than powder coatings, much of Asias industrial coatings is still based mostly on solvent-borne technology. This will
slowly change over the next decade throughout the developing
parts of Asia Pacific as environmental and health & safety issues
gain greater prominence with regulators and the general public.
Over the past five years, China has contributed significantly
more to the overall world growth than any other country, and
this is forecast to continue for the foreseeable future. That being
said, there has clearly been a recent slowdown in Chinas GDP
growth compared to past years. Some of Chinas and other
Asian countries economies are tied to the economies of North

40 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

August 2013

Asia-Pacific Report FEATURE

America and Europe. For instance, as Southeast Asias exports
to these regions have fallen due to the Western regions sluggish
economies, so too has the GDP growth of these Asian exporting
nations. In another example, the ongoing debt crisis in Europe
has impacted Chinese exports. While this has been occurring,
there has been a leveling off of middle class consumer demand
across China which has resulted in thousands of layoffs and
anemic sales of certain products for domestic consumption. In
fact, there are some international economists who worry that
China could experience hard economic conditions which would
result in negative consequences for other countries across the
globe that have come to rely on China to fuel the global economy. On balance, what is stated above, Chinas GDP growth is
still likely to do better than most other countries, perhaps seven
to eight percent per year over the next few years.
The expectation is that the disparity in growth rates between
Asia Pacific countries will continue over the next several years.
China and India are forecast to experience the greatest growth
in GDP per capita to 2016. Japan and Australia are projected to post positive growth but will lag China, India and other
parts of Asia Pacific. Since growth in consumption per capita
closely mirrors growth in GDP per capita, the expectation is
that the growth areas of the past five years will continue to be
the growth areas for the next five years. Figure 3 depicts the
forecast growth in GDP per capita by country for 2011 to 2016.

Competitive Landscape
Global coatings competitors play a significant role in the Asia
Pacific market. Their role, however, is less than in other regional markets and tends to be more specific to selected end use
markets. For example, in China, it is estimated that more than
15,000 manufacturers are active in the coatings marketplace,
although the vast majority of them operate on a very small scale. There will likely
be a fair amount of consolidation taking
place over the next several years in Asia as
the best of the small and mid-sized companies get acquired by the multinationals
and the weaker players get edged out by
environmental pressures and the demand
for higher quality products by customers.
AkzoNobel, through the ICI acquisition, is a leader in the Chinese decorative
and industrial markets and has a very
strong presence in powder coatings in the
region. BASF, DuPont (Axalta) and PPG
have carved out strong positions in the
automotive OEM and refinish markets
in China. Valspar has a large presence in
the industrial coatings market in China
and is active in the decorative market
through Huarun Paints. In September
2010, Valspar completed its acquisition
of Australian paint manufacturer Wattyl
Ltd. Both Kansai Paint and Nippon Paint

are not only the market leaders in Japan but are also major
suppliers in China. Chugoku Marine Paints, another Japanesebased company that sells paint into the marine and industrial
sectors, recently completed the construction of its third manufacturing plant in China. While most of the local and regional
Chinese paint companies tend to focus on the low-end parts of
the market, there are a few Chinese paint manufacturers that
offer high-end coatings. For example, Guangdong Carpoly
Chemical Group, Guangzhou Strong Chemical and Daoqum are
Chinese companies that offer high end products, although none
of them have very large market shares.
Participation by the large multinational paint companies is
growing in India. AkzoNobel, BASF, DuPont (Axalta) and PPG
are all active in the Indian automotive refinishes, powder coatings
and industrial coatings markets. Kansai Paint and Nippon Paint
are also gaining a foothold in India. For example, Kansai Paint
is the holding company for what was once known as Goodlass
Nerolac of India, now called Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd.
Within India, the large, well-financed coatings companies,
including an increasing number of multinationals as mentioned
above, comprise the so-called organized part of the Indian
coatings market. This is estimated to be over two thirds of the
total coatings industry. By contrast, the unorganized part of
the Indian market is still quite fragmented with well over 1,000
small participants. This segment tends to be more focused on
the local and regional markets.

Do Opportunities Still Exist in Asia Pacific

for Western Companies?
The future growth of the coatings industry within Asian countries will depend on the growth and prosperity of their economies. Certain aspects and drivers of the economy impact some

FEATURE Asia-Pacific Report

segments of the coatings industry more than others. For example, within the industrial coatings sector, sales of automobiles
and other consumer goods are closely linked to personal income
and overall GDP. As GDP and personal income within a particular country increases, sales of products requiring coatings
also increase. Economies in Asia expected to see the greatest
increase in GDP over the next several years include China, India
and certain Southeast Asian counties. Some of the more developed countries such as Japan, Australia and New Zealand are
expected to have GDP growth below the global average.
As mentioned earlier, another major factor impacting the
size of a countrys coatings industry beyond GDP growth is
per capita consumption of paint. While GDP growth has
been quite rapid in the Asian Pacific region, the relatively
low paint consumption per capita indicates that room for
future growth is potentially quite large. On a global regional basis, there is wide variation in coatings demand per
person. For example, the per capita consumption in Asia,
which is less than five liters, is significantly lower than that
of North America at nearly 12 liters per person per year. As
the developing economies of Asia grow and as the standard
of living continues to increase in these countries, so too will
the demand per capita for coatings. The growth potential
that exists for coatings in Asia is tremendous given the large
populations and the population growth compared to Europe
and North America. Figure 4 depicts coatings demand per
capita for Asia Pacific compared to the other four regions of
the world. Since growth in consumption per capita closely

mirrors growth in GDP per capita, the expectation is that

the growth areas of the past five years will continue to be the
growth areas for the next five years.
By 2016, Orr & Boss forecasts that the global coatings industry could reach over $140 billion on more than 40 billion
liters. The Asia-Pacific market is projected to grow above the
global average, albeit at a slightly lower growth rate than how
it has previously performed. By 2016, Asia Pacific will likely
represent 51 percent of the global volume and 43 percent of the
global value. This kind of rapid growth in Asia Pacific has really
gotten the attention of the Western coatings manufacturers and
raw material suppliers over the past two decades. Especially
given the slow growth in Western countries, many paint industry participants have focused on the Asia Pacific region for
future growth. While the opportunities are many, Western suppliers often underestimate the difficulties in market entry at this
time and the differences in business culture within the region.
Western companies looking to enter these markets for the
first time may be surprised to find a new and more challenging
reality compared to years past. For example, as China transitions from being a developing economy to a leading one, labor
rates have increased, particularly in the metropolitan areas as
the standard of living for workers continues to increase. Raw
materials costs can be as high as they are in the more developed regions of the world. Environmental and sustainability
issues continue their migration to the forefront, sometimes
driven by government regulations and sometimes driven by
Western customers operating in that region. And competition from international and even the
more sophisticated local companies
has reached a new high.
To be successful with entry into Asia,
a Western company should learn about
the culture of the country that it intends
to enter, and not just assume that all
Asian cultures are the same. They are
not. The Company must be aware of
the differences in companies, personnel and markets compared to Western
countries. Western companies can uphold their professional protocols but
need to understand how to build relationship when dealing with Asian companies and people. Maintaining good
relationships and communications
should be a top priority when trying to
enter any new geographic market. CW

on the registration list of the Swiss company. Given the size of the business units,
the majority of the registered substances
came from Care Chemicals (Business
Unit Industrial and Consumer Care) as
well as Plastics and Coatings (Business
Unit Pigments).
Alongside the challenges of evaluating and authorizing, in the third phase of
REACH that is currently underway, all
of the remaining chemical substances of
more than one ton per year must be registered by 2018. For Clariant this means
yet another significant increase in the size
of the dossier to be submitted.

Clariant Registers 255

Chemicals with EU

Al-Sorayai Group has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with

Al-Jazeera Paints to establish a factory project for the production of calcium carbonate.
The MoU focuses on the mutual interest of the two companies to build a
factory for the manufacture of calcium
carbonate and its derivatives as well as
other minerals supported with the latest technology and the highest international standards. The factory will be
located in Jeddah under a limited liability company.

Clariant recently completed Phase 2

of REACH (Registration, Evaluation,
Authorisation
and
Restriction
of
Chemicals) with the registration of 255
different chemical substances. These include 155 dossiers submitted by Clariant
as the lead registrant, amounting to
5.3 percent of all substances registered
for the first time in the EU in this second
REACH phase.
Phase 2 involved 66 percent more
chemicals produced in the EU and

Orion Offers Carbon Black for High-Jet

Waterborne Base Coatings
A new easy-to-disperse carbon black
pigment that can produce stable waterborne pigment pastes within minutes is
now available from Orion Engineered
Carbons. Black XPB 430 was developed
to deliver the high jetness and bluish undertones needed for durable, high-quality
automotive basecoats.
Rapid and thorough dispersion is essential to improve productivity and achieve
waterborne coatings of highly consistent quality. XPB 430 can be dispersed
directly in water and develops the final
colorimetric properties within minutes
without further milling or further wetting
additives, according to the company. The
recommended paste formulation for XPB
430 contains no wetting agents only
water and a defoamer (at 0.5 percent). In
comparison tests with other commercial
high-jet carbon black pigment powders,
XPB 430 achieved high gloss, very low
haze coatings with highest jetness values
combined with very strong bluish undertones, according to the company.
The company reported that test coatings formulated with the XPB 430 paste
were compared with several competitive
high-jet carbon black pigment powders
in equivalent 13 percent pigment concentrations in binder-free millbases. The
competitive carbon black pigments were
all well stabilized for comparison (90
percent active wetting agent to pigment).

Final coatings were then prepared at 1.5

percent pigment concentration letdown
in a commercially available 30 percent
polyurethane (PU) dispersion and applied to glass plates for colorimetric
testing.

Historic Zagreb Cathedral

Restored with Cortec

Recently Cortec provided a solution for the restoration of Zagreb Cathedral. Built in 1093, it is the tallest building in Croatia and
attracts thousands of tourists worldwide. Since low-quality stone was used in the past due to economic reasons, it soon started to
deteriorate, affected by weather and city pollution.
The final reconstruction started in 1990 and has been going on ever since by phases and priorities. During reconstruction work
on the south tower, damaged steel bands were detected surrounding the tower approximately every three meters in height. The
bands were covered with rust and in drainage areas, visual damage to the diameter of the bands were present.
Faculty of Mechanical Engineering examined the bands and performed experiments on the steel bars. They recommended
removal of loose corrosion from the bands surfaces, enhancing the bands in the areas of damage and application of Cortecs anticorrosion protection product CorrVerter.
CorrVerter is a water-based primer that converts rust into a protective layer and is capable of penetrating into the depths of corroded surfaces. It contains a novel chemical chelating agent that modifies surface rust into a hydrophobic passive layer. Two-layers
of CorrVerter coating were brushed onto smaller surfaces and sprayed in larger areas directly onto the metal bands. The bands were
then reinforced with steel fishplates that were welded on the bands and also protected with CorrVerter. CW

The neo-gothic towers of Zagreb Cathedral were restored using Cortecs CorrVerter. CorrVerter coating penetrated to the non-corroded part of the metal and
stopped further advancement of the corrosion process.
