C.S.I Church History

n 27th September 1947, the General Council of the Church of India, Pakistan, Burma and Ceylon, General Assembly of South India United Church
and South India Provincial Synod of The Methodist Church joined together to
form the CHURCH OF SOUTH INDIA as the largest united national church in
India. The continued growth has been further enriched with the joining of the
churches of Basel Mission and the Anglican Diocese of Nandyal. A unique
church was birthed out of the shading of the Episcopal and non - Episcopal traditions as a gift of God to the people of India and as a visible mark of the ecclesiastical unity for the worldwide church.
Being the largest Protestant church in India, the CSI celebrates her life with Indian culture and spirituality and she also raises her voice for the voiceless on matters of justice, peace and integrity of creation. Sharing in the love of Jesus Christ
with the people of India through proclamation of the salutary news of Jesus; responding to human need through institutional and emergency relief work; through
community development projects and skill training programs for the marginalized
and disadvantaged sections of the people and programs for the wholeness of creative action. Translating this vision and commitment, the Synod of the Church of
South India as the apex body of the church endeavors to encourage, equip and
empower her dioceses, congregations and institutions through varied ministries.
Since the mid 1960's there has been a significant influx of Christians from South
India to North America. Getting up in the thick of the large diversity of this continent due to differences in culture and language, the CSI members who abide by
the customs of the Church of South India felt the requirement to be culturally and
religiously bound together by the liturgical and ecclesiastical practices of the
Church of South India. Thus, the church seeks a structural system to push a unified, orderly and uniform practice among the Church of South India Congregations in North America and to equip the church to transmit through the constitution of a CSI Diocese in North America. To ease this demand as well as to relate
formally to the Church of South India, the Congregations of Church of South India in North America accept and embrace the establishment for the COUNCIL
OF THE CHURCH OF SOUTH INDIA CONGREGATIONS IN NORTH
