Heat resistant, joint sealant back-up cord

for hot pour sealants
Uses

Specification

Provides a non absorbent, heat resistant, compressible

backup cord; which can be inserted into a joint to control
sealant depth. Ideally suited to the following applications:

Parking and hardstanding areas.

Where so indicated on the contract drawings and

documents, all joints, to be filled prior to sealant
application, shall be filled using Expancell HPS cross
linked, closed cell, polyethylene foam back-up cord from
Fosroc. The back-up cord shall have a minimum density of
30 kg/m3 tested in accordance with ASTM D-1622; a
maximum water absorption of 0.03gm/cc tested in
accordance with ASTM C-1016; and shall have an
effective working temperature of not less than 215C.

- based upon tests carried out using a hot pour rubber
asphalt sealing compound, employed at temperatures
between 200C and 215C.

Advantages
Labour saving - does not require separate bond
breaking medium, so easy to install.
Versatile - heat resistant, compatible with virtually all
sealant types.

*NOTE: Maximum safe operating temperature for sealants

such as Nitoseal 777* is 150C.

Economical - rot proof, non absorbent equates to long

term service life.

Instructions for use

Provides firm backing for sealant tooling and promotes

minimum strain geometry for the installed sealant.

When installed, the circular nature of Expancell HPS is

designed to compress the uppermost face into a convex
shape; in order to present the optimum geometrical
configuration, to produce minimum strain to the bottom of
the applied sealant.

Insulates the underside of the sealant from variations

in temperature, moisture and humidity from within the
joint cavity.

recommendations on the size of cord to suit particular joint
widths.

Preparation

ASTM C-335-84 : R-value of 3.4

All joints to be filled should be clean, dry and free from

dust. Any laitence, or other surface deposits on the joint
face, should be mechanically removed prior to installation
of the back-up cord. Thereafter, joints should be
thoroughly cleaned to remove any obstructing, loose
contaminants.

Description
Expancell HPS is an extruded, closed cell, low density
polyethylene foam back-up cord; which has been cross
linked to withstand temperatures well in excess of 2000C.
It is supplied as a circular cord and is available in a variety
of sizes.

Application

Technical support

The Expancell HPS back-up cord should be pressed firmly

into position by hand. If necessary, a blunt tool (e.g.
wooden broom handle) can be used to assist insertion, but
care should be taken not to break the skin of the cord.

Additional Information

There are no serious limitations to the use of Expancell

HPS.

Health and safety

There are no health hazards associated with the normal
usage of Expancell HPS.
Fire
Expancell HPS is flammable at very extreme temperatures,
but does not constitute a fire hazard on its own.
