Jesus said to them: They do not need
to go away.
You give them
something to eat.
They said to Him: We have here only
five loaves and two fish.
He said: Bring them to Me.
And He commanded the multitudes to
sit down on the grass.
And He took the five loaves and the two
fish, and looking up to Heaven, He
Blessed and broke and gave the
loaves to the Disciples, and the
Disciples gave to the multitudes.
And they all ate and were filled, and
they took up twelve baskets full of
the fragments that remained.
Those who had eaten were about five
thousand men besides the women
and children!
And immediately Jesus made His
Disciples get into the boat and go
before Him to the other side, while
He sent the multitudes away.

ST PARASKEVE

OF

ROME

Tahinon is presvian, ke spefson is

ikesian, i prostatevousa ai, Theotoke,

St Paraskeve was born of Greek Christian parents

in Rome. circa 140.
Her father, Agathon was wealthy and her mother,
Politia, had many virtuous attributes, the
greatest of which were her kindness,
compassion and generosity of good deeds.
Agathon and Politia had been married for many
years but as they were childless, they
constantly besought God to Bless them with a
child whom they vowed to raise in a True
Christian Life.
Eventually, their Prayers were answered and in
due time a lovely, healthy daughter was born
to them on a Friday, which is why they named
her Paraskeve.
What impressed the most upon Paraskeve was not
only her parents' exemplary guidance, but
their Christian Life.
She was educated in various secular subjects
and especially from Holy Scripture, but she was also well versed in Philosophy.
Bolstered by her Christian upbringing and Philosophy, she often conversed with
other women about Christianity, thereby strengthening and enlightening their
Faith in the new religion.
Many noblemen wanted to marry the beautiful, educated and wealthy young
woman, and her intelligence and kindness made her even more desirable.
However, St Paraskeve had - from a very early age - a higher Goal in mind, and
without any hesitation and without fail, she gently but firmly rejected all
marriage proposals.
When she was 20 years old, both her parents died, and compelled by her Love of
Christ and her desire to serve Him in any way possible, St Paraskeve sold all her
worldly goods and dispersed most of the money among the poor and destitute,
while the remainder was donated to a community treasury that supported a
home for young virgins and widows who had dedicated their lives to the
Teachings of Christianity.
As most of these women had inadvertently strayed from the True Teachings of the
Holy Gospel of Christ our Lord and Saviour, St Paraskeve remained with them
for many years in order to teach them the True Meaning and Purpose of
Christianity.
This was not enough for her and she set off to teach the Way and Truth of Christ to
others - knowing that death awaited her due to the terrible persecution of
Christians by the Hebrew and Roman authorities.
She left Rome at the age of 30 and began her Holy Mission - passing through
many cities and villages.
St Paraskeve was able to accomplish much of her Sacred Mission while Emperor
Antonius Pius ruled Rome for he did not arrest, torture and execute Christians
without a fair trial. Instead, he protected them against the blind mania of the
Jewish and Roman inhabitants.
Christians could only be brought to trial if a formal complaint were lodged against
them by other citizens. At one time Emperor Antonius had to repeal this law
because of the many disasters that befell Rome, which were unjustly blamed
on the Christians.

OF

Brethren: before Faith came, we were

kept under guard by the Law kept
for the Faith that would afterward be
revealed.
Therefore, the Law was our Tutor - to
bring us to Christ, so that we might
be Justified by Faith.
After Faith has come, we are no longer
under a Tutor.
You are all sons of God through Faith in
Christ Jesus.
For as many of you as were Baptised
into Christ have put on Christ.
There is neither Jew nor Greek; there is
neither slave nor free;
there is
neither male nor female.
You are all one in Christ Jesus.
If you are Christs then you are
Abrahams seed, and Heirs according
to the Promise.
I say that the Heir as long as he is a
child does not differ at all from a
slave, although he is master of all,
but is under Guardians and Stewards
until the time appointed by the
Father.
Even so, we when we were children
were in bondage under the elements
of the world.
When the fullness of time had come,
God sent forth His Son Born of a
Woman, Born under the Law - to
Redeem those who were under the
Law, that we might receive the
Adoption as sons.

ROME 26 JULY 2015

Eventually, Emperor Antonius heard of St Paraskeve's Holy Mission when, upon her
return to Rome, several Hebrews had filed false complaints against her.
He summoned her to his court in order to question her. Fascinated by her natural
beauty and sincere Humility he tried with kind words to persuade her to
renounce her Faith - even promising to marry her and make her his Empress,
which would empower her greatly.
St Paraskeve quietly but adamantly refused to renounce Christ, or to make any
offerings to the pagan gods, whereupon she was sentenced to unspeakable
tortures to force her to renounce her Faith.
The executioners shoved a tightly fitted steel helmet on her head, which was lined
with sharp nails but it seemed to have no effect on St Paraskeve although
many of those who witnessed the torture and saw how serene she remained,
and then appeared to be unscathed, converted to Christianity, and were
subsequently also executed.
While she was imprisoned, St Paraskeve asked God to grant her the Strength and
Courage to endure the terror that confronted her, and she ceaselessly
continued to pray.
The torturers hung her by her hair while her hands and arms were burnt with fiery
torches, and although she suffered greatly, Divine Grace granted her the will
and the Power not to submit to the pain.
St Paraskeve was immersed into a very large vat of boiling oil and tar, yet again,
by Divine Grace, she Miraculously she stood serenely, constantly praying, as if
she were being cooled rather than burnt alive.
Emperor Antonius and his sycophants thought that she used sorcery to keep the oil
and tar cool, thus preventing her from being burnt, but St Paraskeve assured
them that it was indeed boiling hot - they could test it for themselves.
When they hesitated to do so, she took a handful of the boiling tar and oil, and
told him that he could test it. She took some of the boiling liquid and threw it in
the Emperor's face, burning and blinding his eyes.
Compelled by her natural Kindness and Compassion, St Paraskeve then climbed
out of the vat and went to the Emperor, telling him that only the Christian God
could cure him.
She then prayed to our Lord, beseeching Him to Heal the suffering Emperor and
immediately he regained his sight and was restored to full health.
Deeply traumatised by his suffering, but also profoundly humbled and grateful to
Christ for His Healing, Emperor Antonius freed St Paraskeve and put an end to
all persecutions against the Christians throughout the Roman Empire.
St Paraskeve set out with an even greater zeal to accomplish her Apostolic Mission
and as long as Emperor Antonius was alive she taught Divine Truth without
fear of persecution for herself or, especially for those who faithfully followed our
Lord Jesus Christ.
After Marcus Arelius succeeded Antonius as Emperor, a pestilence befell Rome
which caused the death of great multitudes and once again the Christians
were blamed, causing the Emperor to change the laws dealing with "nonbelievers".
St Paraskeve was arrested in a city that was governed by a man named Asclipius,
and when she refused to renounce Christ and worship the pagan gods, she
was thrown into a pit with a very large, highly venomous snake. She made the
Sign of the Cross and continued to pray - and the snake did not harm her at
all.
Asclipius realised that she was obviously protected by ...a Great and Mighty
Power... and he promptly decided to set her free.
St Paraskeve eventually arrived at the city in which she would meet her death.
Taracius was the Governor, and as soon as he heard about her, he summoned her
to the palace for trial.

OF

ROME 26 JULY 2015

Just as before, his executioners immersed St Paraskeve in a large vat of boiling oil
and tar, and as before, she remained unharmed and unaffected, while many
of the onlookers converted to Christianity.
She was then bound tightly and beaten mercilessly, after which she was flung to
the ground and a huge, heavy stone weight was place on top of her in order to
slowly crush and suffocate her to death.
St Paraskeve ceaselessly prayed for Strength to endure, never for a moment
surrendering to the demands of her persecutors.
The next morning, to their utter bewilderment they found that St Paraskeve was
still alive.
When they asked her if she was ready to make offerings to the pagan gods, she
agreed even though she refused to renounce Christ .
Her torturers dragged her to the Temple of Apollo and everyone praised the
success of Governor Taracius, thinking that he had at last succeeded in
breaking St Paraskeve's unwavering Faith and extremely strong will.
As she entered the temple, St Paraskeve managed to stand up straight, raise her
hand and make the Sign of the Cross, whereupon a terrifying, deafening, loud
noise was heard and all the idols were instantly destroyed.
The shocked pagan priests and idolaters immediately seized St Paraskeve, beat
her, and pushed her out of the temple.
The furious pagans demanded that, without further ado, Taracius was to execute
St Paraskeve.
The executioners took St Paraskeve to the place of execution, which was outside
the city walls, and, surprisingly, when she asked to be left alone for a few
moments to pray, they obliged her.
After a while they returned and St Paraskeve, as serene as ever, readily bowed her
neck for her Perfection by sword, thereby receiving her Holy Martyrs Crown of
Glory and Victory.
St. Paraskeve is the Patron Saint and Healer of the blind and those who suffer from
severe eye ailments.
Her Intercessory Prayers with her Beloved Bridegroom, and our Lord and Saviour,
Jesus Christ, continue to grant Healings to the Faithful who seek comfort and
cures.

Kindly use the Matins Service Book until this point.
