Moorestown High School celebrated the graduates of the senior class of 2015 on Thursday,
June 18 at the MHS stadium.
Three hundred and thirty seniors
in cap and gown took their final
steps as high school students and
began new steps to their next
journey in life.
On that day, students, administrators, families and friends were
addressed by class of 2015 valedictorian Saylor Brisson and
salutatorian Olivia Saouaf, giving
hope and inspiration to the class
of 2015 for the future.

according to the Building Excellence Bond Referendum.
Moorestown High School students original Relay for Life goal
was to raise $15,000 for the American Cancer Society, but they
ended up doubling that amount,
raising more than $30,000 for the
fight against cancer.
The biggest highlight is that
they started out with a goal that
was relatively aggressive for
$15,000 for a first-time event. And
I am absolutely ecstatic to report
that as of the last report from Mat
(Ogin) of the American Cancer
Society that this group has
achieved over $30,000, surpassing
their goal, MHS Principal Andrew Seibel said.

The Moorestown Fourth of
July Parade will take place on
Saturday, July 4, step-off time is
noon. The Parade Committee
wishes to invite the military veterans of Moorestown to participate in this celebration of our
freedom.
The committee feels the crowd
will respond wonderfully to seeing a float and/or marching contingent of those heroes who guaranteed that freedom. It shows
team spirit as well as giving the
spectators a sense that the veterans get it in terms of

4th of July
Committee
hosts events
Moorestowns 4th of July Committee is going to have the parade
again this year, assuming there is
no violent weather that day, as
there is no rain date.
On June 4, the committee held
the third annual Freedom Lecture. This informative talk took
place in the Moorestown Library
and featured a speaker from the
National Constitution Center in
Philadelphia who spoke about the
Constitution and its interpretations now and when it was created. This talk resulted in a full audience and the committee thanks
everyone for coming.
The committee also holds the
Freedom Poster Contest in the
various Moorestown schools to
promote awareness of our freedom among the young students.
The winners of the Freedom
Poster Contest will ride in the parade.
The 2015 parade will step off at
noon, heading up Chester Avenue, turning right on East Main
Street to Church Street where it
officially ends. Families are welcome to participate with their
decorated bikes, scooters and
wagons. We welcome veterans
and
encourage
all
of
Moorestowns civic organizations
to also participate in the parade.

sprinters
excel at meet
On the weekend of June 6 and
7, World Athlete Track Academy
was the host team for the annual
South Jersey Track and Field Alliance Youth Championships at
Moorestown High School.
More than 500 athletes from all
over South Jersey entered in the
meet. World Athlete sprinters Elijah Law and James Burrus, both
from Moorestown, advanced to
the championship by their finish
in the SJTFA North Championship held at Shawnee High
School.
In the championship meet,
Burrus competed in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 4x100 relay

our normal routine. Traffic eases up at

We here at The Sun dont take vacations. Well, thats not true, but our dedication to providing the best coverage
of town doesnt waiver one bit. If anything, summer allows us to focus even

Council announces one water well reopen,

the second to enter pilot program

Moorestown Wells 7 and 9 on Church
Street were closed last October as a precaution and on the recommendation of the
state Department of Environmental Protection due to an unregulated substance
called Trichloropropane (TCP 1,2,3) being
found in the water at .067 parts per billion.
Since then, the township has been working
with the NJDEP to find the best treatment
option for the wells.
At a special council meeting on Tuesday,
June 16, township administrator Scott
Carew announced that Well 7 tested as a
non-detect for TCP 1,2,3 and would be
turned back on the next day, Wednesday,
June 17, and tested on a monthly basis.

Well 9 still tested positive for the TCP 1,2,3
and would be put on a pilot program for
possibly the next two years.
Earlier in the year, the township hired
toxicologist Dr. James Bus to conduct further testing on the two wells. That testing
took place two weeks ago. The results came
back with a higher level of TCP 1,2,3 in
Well 9 with a .103 parts per billion, but a
non-detect in Well 7.
Because of this, Well 7 was reopened and
will be tested on a monthly basis indefinitely, according to township utilities engineer
L. Russell Trice, senior associate at Alaimo
Group, Consulting Engineers. If TCP 1,2,3
returns in the testing, the township will
consult NJDEP once again on its recom-
mendation.
According to Trice, the pilot plan for
Well 9 which runs 30 feet deeper into the
ground than Well 7 would be done on a
small scale in a trailer, with the most likely
treatment being carbon absorption. Samples during this testing will be done on a
weekly basis for four weeks. After that, it
will take another four weeks to get the results and another few weeks to finalize the
report for the township to review. From
there they will go into design, which could
take about a year.
In total, the process should take roughly
two years, according to Trice, but the results of the treatment would be immediate.

As the 2014-2015 school year
has come to a close, so does a
chapter of this moms life. After
10 years, my youngest child is
leaving

Elementary
School. While many parents are
making this transition, it has
struck me in a very particular
way.
When our children are in elementary school, we, as parents,
are in deep running back and
forth to school, practices, play
dates and music lessons you
name it. Starting at 3:45 p.m., the
starters gun goes off and the running begins. We feel like we are
so overwhelmed that there is
never enough time

After-school clubs, activities and
sports dominate. Free time is
spent on homework or with

So, why the trip down memory
lane? Because it struck me as I
write about fall sports registrations, that before long I wont be
able to coach my children anymore. Before too long, my involvement in their activities will be
limited to how much they tell me
at dinner. Before its too late, I
want to share this perspective
with every parent registering for
fall recreation programs.
When my oldest was in kindergarten (2005), I received a call
from the Department of Parks
and Recreation, asking if I would
be interested in coaching. I had
only ever played recreation soccer as a fifth and sixth grader, and
never followed it with any
amount of fervor. I told them I
had no experience. They said it

At Baker Elementary School,
South Valley Elementary School,
Mary E. Roberts Elementary
School, William Allen Middle
School and MHS Packages 1, security
vestibules,

data/technology upgrades, are on
schedule. Package 1 started after
schools were closed, beginning at
MHS, to be done over the summer
for all schools. Package 2 has
started at MHS and WAMS and
plans to be done by the end of December for all schools.
Package 3, roofing, will begin
and end in the summer at all
schools. Package 4, toilet room
upgrades for Mary Roberts and
South Valley, has begun and
should end in the summer. Pack-
age 5, HVAC upgrades and improvements for the elementary

schools, is planned to begin in the
summer and end around October.
They are holding off for UES and
WAMS because they could potentially get a rebate for the updates.
With Package 7, drainage improvements for South Valley, the
contractor is scheduled to start
and end over the summer.
The board also rejected the
bids for the Moorestown High
School athletics field improvements project, which was a part
of the second question of the
bond referendum and listed as
Package 6. The board received the
initial bids for the projects, which
ended up being over the estimated amount. The Operations and
Facilities Committee decided to
revisit those projects, with some
changes, and go out to rebid.
The rebid process is very common and normal. Were confident
based on our assumptions, and

the assumptions from our consultants, that well be able to
come in at the right number and
keep those projects on track,
board member Matthew Simeon
said.
The board is hoping bids come
in at budget, and if they do, work
will begin early in July and be
completed in October.

Newcomer: Maybe town can

report on wells on a regular basis
NEWCOMER
At the same time, the township
is interested in the removal of
other substances found in the
wells, which include trichloroethylene (TCE), manganese and
other radiological contaminants.
According to Trice, manganese is
regulated for aesthetic reasons,
and the TCE and radiological elements are not above the maximum contaminate level. However,
the township wanted to have
these treated so Moorestown
would have clean water pumped
to houses.
As of now, with the wells off, the
township had paid $400,000 more
last year from New Jersey American Water and $1.2 million so far
this year, according to Carew. But,
with Well 7 being turned back on,
Carew believes the township
would be able to recapture some of
the cost later in the year by turning off NJ American Water and
exclusively using Well 7.
You dont need both wells,

Carew said. We should be able to
get enough water from Well 7 to
pick up from Well 9.
Although council had some
concerns with communication
and testing timing, it endorsed
the plan to turn Well 7 back on
and the pilot testing for Well 9.
I think it is great. I think this
council has been proactive. We
got a recommendation on an unregulated contaminant and
have been going well beyond monitoring and trying to figure out solutions. I wish we didnt spend as
much money as we did, but hopefully this will help and have a solution that will take care of all the
rest. Taking steps to have the
cleanest possible water should be
commended, and I think this
council and our employees have
been doing a great job, Councilwoman Stacey Jordan said. I
think it is great that we can turn
that well back on and that we can
hopefully recoup some of the
money that we have been spending.
If we have a non-detect now,
we absolutely should be turning

the well back on. I want to be
spending as little money on water
as possible when we are capable
of producing the water ourselves,
with ongoing monitoring, of
course, to make sure that stays at
the level we expect it to. I am
much happier that the majority of
the water is coming from our
water treatment plants, Mayor
Victoria Napolitano said.
Residents were allowed to
come up for public comments,
however they were cut short as a
meeting was to take place at the
Town Hall Council Chambers not
long after. Council said those who
wish to make further comments
could come to future council
meetings. Councilman Greg Newcomer recommended a meeting
specifically for the water and
wells, as well as to find a way to
keep people updated.
As we go forward, I hope we
continually report for people in
the town and for us to know.
Maybe we can, in some manner,
report on a regular basis, Newcomer said.

experience. So I said sure! You
mean I can run around on the
field like a big kid and the kids
will believe that I know what I am
talking about? Awesome!
Over the last 10 years, I or my
husband have volunteered to
coach a multitude of sports, some
of which we had played, some of
which we had not. We have
coached alone; we have cocoached; we have both coached
more than one team when there

werent enough coaches; and we
have recruited friends to coach.
And at the end of every season,
we have met new parents, new
children and have always had a
great experience.
So this week, as you settle into
summer and think distantly toward for fall, consider coaching a
recreation sports team. Recreation soccer, recreation field
hockey, recreation basketball
(winter) and lacrosse (spring) all
need parent/volunteer coaches.
Its an amazing opportunity to be
a part of your childs personal
growth and development in a fun,
supportive and friendly atmosphere. One hour a week and one
hour on the weekend the commitment is minimal, but the reward is immeasurable.
Do you love the sport, but dont
have a child in the program? The
Department of Parks and Recreation accepts adult volunteers.
All independent adult volunteers
receive a state registered background check. Volunteering to be
a part of your childs extra-curricular activities is limited, so
take that time now, when there is
time, even though it doesnt feel
like it. Enjoy watching them play,
learn and grow. Before long, their
caps will be flung into the air and
you will be able to look back and
remember all of the fun along the

Brisson: I guess one of the most
recent memories was on Friday, it
was kind of our senior prank day.

day. Someone in our class brought
a big boom box and played music
all throughout the day. We had impromptu ChaCha Slides and the
Cupid Shuffle. Also, someone got

them follow our assistant principal Mr. (Donnie) Williams. That
was pretty funny.
Saouaf: He was a good sport
about it.
Brisson: What else? Oh, we had
a pillow fight in the gym in between periods.
Saouaf: And there was a threelegged race they had in the hallway as well.
Brisson: Right! Then at the end
of the day, people brought out
their pickup trucks, with coolers
of drinks and lawn games, and
we had a tailgate. Mr. Softee came
and I think Project Graduation
bought us all ice cream, so that
was really nice. It was just a really good way to end the year.
Saouaf: All of those final things
(were my favorite). We had our

Brisson: Olivia is really good at
dancing.

about your speech?
Brisson: I am hoping to reflect a
little bit on what our year has
been like and then also try to give

a little inspiration for the future,
get people excited about what
they will be able to do as they
move on to the next part of their
life.
Saouaf: Our class has a very
unique personality, and Id like to
talk about different things that
we have done that make our class
very unique.
The Sun: Would you mind giving an example of one?
Saouaf: Definitely the Senior
Day activities that we just had,
still working on specifics.
The Sun: What kind of message
do you want to leave your fellow
graduates with?
Brisson: I would say just to always look fondly on their time
here at MHS. High school is a really special and unique experience. But also to feel confident in
themselves and use what theyve
learned in college, or their jobs,
or whatever theyll be doing with
the rest of their lives. Because I
think Moorestown does a great
job of preparing everyone for success.
Saouaf: That was most of mine!
Be confident in themselves because theyve done so many
amazing things up to this point
that will carry over. Theyll be
able to accomplish much more in
college and beyond.

There are so many authentically wonderful thoughts I keep in

my memory bank, stored like precious jewels I take out and admire
for a while. Then they get tucked
away for future tales his grandchildren love to hear. I hope they
remember all of the words because they were born too late to
meet him.
Trying to pull up a favorite is
quite futile; there are too many,
but there is one I truly love.
Ever year my father, Carl
Steuernagel, would choose a lake,
ocean or resort spa to spend his
two weeks of vacation. The white
Cadillac would be packed beyond
capacity with new summer
clothes, snorkels, fins, tennis
rackets, sun tan lotion, four wild
kids and one mom. Once the car

pulled out of the driveway, my father lit up a big old Garcia Vega
cigar. Even on the hottest summer day, we had to roll down the
windows while the air conditioner was blowing full blast.
When I was very young, maybe
4 or 5, my father taught me how to
float like a marshmallow against
the pulling current of the ocean.
We were at some beach resort and
he swam past the crashing waves
with me clinging to his hairy
back. I had no life jacket or fear.
He was my dad, nothing bad
could possibly happen when I was
with him.
He instructed me to lay flat on

the water and take a big breath
while he treaded water and
buoyed me up with his strong
arms. When he took his support
away from my tiny body, I was on
my own, suspended the sea of
tranquility without a care in the
world. I could gaze past the expanse of bright sea with sailboats
that roamed the horizon; their
white sales contrasted with the
vermilion sky.
To this day I always vacation
on the water so I can float my
cares away. My father was an exceptional man of men.
