Profile of the Student

1.1.
Jolina P. Palaganas is an incoming grade X student in Alalum National
High School, a public School in Bauan Batangas. She lives in San Pascual
Batangas with her parents, three brothers and two sisters. Her father is Mr. Julius
A. Palaganas and her mother is Mrs. Donabel P. Palaganas. She only goes in
town every Saturday and Sunday for their groceries. They dont used to have
family day or go to church every once a week. Jolina is the number one fan of
her older sister Alicia, who used to play volleyball since her early days in
elementary. Alicia influenced her in playing volleyball, and now it is her favorite
sports. She also loves music. For her it is a way to escape moments of life when
it gets fierce.
Ina is a very kind hearted daughter. She does the chores most of the time
especially when its weekend and she doesnt have much homework to be done
at night and her mother is busy taking care of her two younger brothers, Anthony
and Mark. Another reason is that when lazy moments strike to her older sister
and eldest brother. She doesnt ask too much for her allowance and still can even
save money to produce for her projects. She just turned fifteen last February 3,
thats why it is good to know that at her young age she already knows how to be
responsible.
English is never her favorite subject. She never received a high grade in
English since she started in High School. Thus, shes exceeding in her favorite
subjects MAPEH and ESP wherein she gets high grades. One time in the class
of Maam Nora Dimaunahan, her adviser and her teacher in English, a moment
of embarrassment happened. She was picked to answer the question number
two in their assignment. The question was how many proper nouns are there in
the sentence? Encircle all the proper nouns used. The sentence was,
Maybeline, Sandra, and Louisa are best buddies. Jolina was just standing
without any motion, when Mrs. Dimaunahan asked her to read and answer the

question. She started to read the sentence slowly, then read it again, and again
very slowly, that it seemed shes internalizing the question again and again. Mrs.
Dimaunahan asked her to pause from reading and said that shes not answering
the question but just reading it over and over again. She also said that its better
for her to back on her seat. Jolina is not unintelligent because she does exceed
in other subjects, it just happened that English is not her area.
1.2. Cultural information
Jolina P. Plalaganas is a Filipino. Shes born and raised in Philippines. She
is a pure Batangeno, for her parents Mr. Julius and Mrs. Donabel Palaganas are
both Batangenos. She finished her elementary Sambat Elementary School and
continued High School in Alalum National High School, which is also a public
school.
She can speak three different languages, English, Visaya, and Tagalog.
Tagalog is her mother tongue its just happened that she can speak Visaya
because she has a besfriend named Nadine, whos a half Batangeno and half
Visaya. Everyone in their house talks in tagalong, and English is a big no for
them.
They are all eight in the house Mr. Julius, her father; Mrs. Donabel, her
mother; Anthony and Mark, her two younger brother; Alicia and Mazee, her two
older sisters; and Mario, the oldest among the siblings. They live in the middle
class. They do not eat outside, and they only go to church once in a blue moon.
They used to live an average way of living, for her father is a simple mazon
carpenter and her mother is a simple house wife. They do have a simple life.
Shes not fun of high heels, mini skirt, sleeveless or dress. T-shirt, pants and
rubber shoes is enough for her.

1.3. Socio economic Information

Jolina Palaganas is just fifteen years old, single no boyfriend no husband.
She is not rich, and also not poor, her Family belongs in the middle class. They
dont have grand influence in the community; their life style is as simple as the
simplest way a person should live. Their Family is compose of eight members,
her Mother and Father her three brothers, and two sisters but, Mr. Palaganas is
the only one working in their Family. Her Mother Mrs. Palaganas is a house wife
who does the chores and takes a good care to all of them. Considering the fact
that her father has a mediocre job, he only earns below ph.10, 000.00 a month, a
small amount which is not really enough to send her in Private School and buy
everything they want but, still they can survive. Jolinas best friend Nadine is from
a respected and high class Family but, even they have different status in life they
are real best friends. Nadine, is an always on the go girl, she goes to mall, out of
town and also out of the Country with her Family, which was never experienced
by Jolina. But Jolina never wanted too much in her life, it doesnt matter to her if
she cant travel to many places, it doesnt matter if her Family is not rich, all she
knows is they are happy and complete.

1.4. Learning Style

The researchers diagnose that the student Jolina Palaganas is an
Auditory Learner. She often used to undergo dictations on how things are going
to be done, and next is she will get the main points out of all the dictated
information to help her memorization. Through these she can easily memorize
things such for example is meaning of proper and common nouns. She easily
retained information to her mind, once she heard it. She also has the talents in

music; she prefers to study lessons whenever theres a music playing while shes
studying. She treats music as part of the lesson. When her teacher announces
that there will be an examination, everyone should study. Jolina studies lectures
alone with a music played in the headset. Her classmates do not notice that she
is already studying in this set up. Her other classmates suggested her to remove
headset while studying, but she prefers to study with a music she learns more
with it. Whenever she doesnt play music, she utter the words she memorizing to
hear it as well.

2.3. Diagnosis
Jolina Palaganas is a student not quite intelligent but, has an average IQ,
who needs remediation in English more specifically in identification of common
and proper nouns. Moreover she is not that good in following directions. One of
the factors to be considered in checking the answer sheet of the student is the
way he/she followed instructions. The researchers found that, even the directions
are clearly stated the student still has difficulties in following it. Jolina was given a
diagnostic examination with a total of 40 items. 20 of these items are about
common and proper nouns. As the researchers checked the paper of the student,
they found out that student got zero correct answers in these 20 questions about
common and proper nouns. She finds it easy to identify singular and plural
nouns, possessive singular and possessive plural nouns but on the other hand
she finds difficulty on identifying common and proper nouns.
