2. SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF SPECIFICATION

2.1

Scope
The criteria specified shall apply to process nozzles NPS 2" and larger for vessels, shell and tube heat
exchangers included if any, and for skid edges. The criteria do not apply to instrument connections,
inspection openings and man ways.
Nozzles shall be designed to withstand forces and moments from thermal expansion and dead weight
of piping. Piping reactions shall be within the limiting criteria set by this specification. In the case of
bursting disc nozzles, the discharge shock load shall be added to the axial force Fa.
Nozzles shall be suitable for a total number of 7,000 full temperature cycles for the expected life times.
Loads which exceed the figures given in this specification will be advised separately.
The forces and moments contained in this specification are considered as minimum criteria in order to
allow for an economical design of the connecting piping.
If the specified loads require the shell thickness to be increased, then the SUPPLIER shall state the
increased thickness in the quotation.
Flanges shall conform to ASME B16.5 (NPS 1/2, Through NPS 24) or ASME B16.47 (NPS 26 through
NPS 60) Series A. Welding neck flanges shall be used for vessels.
All Pressure Vessels shall be designed, fabricated, inspected and tested in accordance with Technical
Specification for Pressure Vessels, data sheets and standards listed in the above specification.

3. EXTERNAL FORCES AND MOMENTS ON NOZZLES

3.1

Nozzles to Shells
Each nozzle shall be capable of withstanding forces and moments from external piping under design
conditions and considered to be acting at the intersection of nozzle and shell in the corroded condition.
The forces and moments acting on the nozzles have been specified as per flange rating as per section
4. Nozzle Minimum Loading Requirements of this specification.

The orientation of the directions of forces and moments acting on the shell has been defined as per
section 5. "Nomenclature" of this specification. The forces and moments can be expected to apply plus
or minus and should be combined simultaneously at all major nozzles.
In certain circumstances it may be necessary to consider additional loads. These cases will be informed
to PURCHASER/COMPANY for approval. In mentioned conditions, engineering sub contractor will state
the actual loads and the manufacturer shall carryout calculations to confirm the structural integrity and
stability of the equipment.
3.2

Nozzles to Formed Heads

The calculation shall be based on:

For Nomenclatures refer section 5.0

Calculation method and design criteria for the basic stress intensity limits shall be based as follows:
-

Calculation method:
WRC 107/297 (cylindrical shells)
WRC 107 (heads)

Design criteria:
PD 5500 Appendix A

Documents and codes shall be the latest edition.

The effect of design pressure loading together with an appropriate Stress Concentration Factor
(SCF) shall be taken into account according to PO 5500.

The stresses shall be checked in two locations:

3.3

Additional Reinforcement
Whenever stresses based on loadings calculated according to the above requirements exceed the
allowable stresses, the Manufacturer shall apply additional reinforcing above the reinforcing required for
pressure loading as follows:

In

A reinforcing ring when not before required for pressure loading

A larger reinforcing ring than already required for pressure loading

A thicker/larger insert plate than already required for pressure loading

shall

inform

the

PURCHASER/COMPANY on the multiplication factor (<1) applied simultaneously on all loadings for
which the allowable stresses can be met.
The PURCHASER may submit to the Manufacturer actual nozzle loadings from connected piping when
these loadings exceed those set forth in the section 4 from tables 4.1 to 4.4.

3.4

Skid Connections
The calculation shall be based on:

For Nomenclatures refer section 5.0

FEM shall be followed in cases which WRC 107 & 297 are not applicable due to the geometrical
conditions and also the out of curve items.
