Whats on your summer reading list? Maybe
youand your kidswill find inspiration in
what area book lovers are taking to the beach.
{ BY STEPHANIE FARRELL }

Caris Fischer, 9, of Vineland says she likes reading a lot and visits
the library every other week to load up on good books. Here,
Helen Cowan Margiotti, at Vineland Public Library, aids her.

Petway: Classroom Close-Up

o batteries are required. Providing the user with

hours of entertainment and sometimes virtual
travel, its inexpensiveeven free. Its not a
new app; its a good book. For both kids and adults,
summers more relaxed schedule is perfect for reading.
Weve gotten away from reading as a form of entertainment," says Helen Cowan Margiotti, the head of
Childrens and Young Adult Services at Vineland Public
Library. Reading shouldnt be a chore. Reading should
be something they enjoy. If they say they dont like
reading, its just because they havent found the right
book yet. Thats why were here. Were going to help
them find it.
The librarians are book sherpas, trained guides to
navigate kids through the stacks, based on interests and
reading level, to the right book.
We want them to read all the time. Reading is a
skill you carry with you your whole life. The more you
read, the better you are at it. This summers reading
program is themed Every Hero Has A Story.
Its about superheroes, community heroes and
heroic acts. We have a bunch of programs to encourage
kids to read. Kids last year read a combined 5,181 books.
We want to see if we can top that this year.
Margiottis picks for beginning readers are The
Pigeon Series and The Elephant and Piggie series by
Mo Willems. For 1st to 2nd grade, she recommends
Tedd Arnolds The Fly Guy series. For chapter book
readers, its The A to Z Mysteries by Rob Roy and The
Bad Kitty Series by Nick Bruel. They are chapter
books, but they have a lot of artwork. I tend to like the
humorous books. For 4th to 6th grade, she says Gregor
the Overlander Series by Suzanne Collins. El Deafo by
Cece Bell is a graphic novel for the same age group, but
I read it and enjoyed it as well.

Family Portraits
The Vineland Historical and Antiquarian
Society was recently honored to receive two oil
paintings of John and Portia Gage from their
descendants, Robert and Penny Wiedeback of
Spring Hill, FL, and Dr. Antoinette Gage Thomas
of Carterville, IL. The Gages were one of the
most influential couples to settle in Vineland
during its early years.
We plan to place the paintings on exhibit immediately, said Ruth A.
Shropshire, president of the Society. John and Portia Gage deserve to be recognized for all of their hard work in the growth and development of our town.
The Wiedebacks and Dr. Thomas also donated copies of some family photographs and other Gage records.
The portraits are typical for the early 19th century, showing a young Portia and
a young John turned slightly toward each other. They will be placed above the
stage in the museums Great Room, on either side of an oil painting of Vinelands
founder Charles K. Landis.
After the Gages moved to Vineland in 1868, the outspoken couple became
involved with a variety of causes, including abolition and womens suffrage. Portia
Gage was the organizer behind 172 local women casting their ballots in the first
presidential election that year, effectively starting the womens right to vote campaign in America.
John Gage was a staunch supporter of equal education opportunities and created a plan for Vinelands first vocational-technical school for both women and men.
Together, the Gages were members of the Friends of Progress, the Vineland
Chapter of the National Liberal League and other organizations for social change.
The couple, who had made a fortune in the flour industry in Chicago, purchased
property in Landis Township on south East Avenue after they arrived in Vineland.
At that time, the seven-year-old town was only one square mile in size and was
bordered by East Avenue and West Avenue and Park Avenue and Chestnut Avenue.
They raised four sons in Vineland, including John Portius Gage, who invented
the Gage Self-Setting Plane, which became an important tool for carpenters across
America. John and Portia Gage were friends with Mr. Landis, introducing him to
nationally known figures such as Robert Dale Owen, a reformer who wrote and lectured throughout America on the need for social change.
Dr. Antoinette Gage Thomas, left, the great-granddaughter of John and Portia Gage, with her
nephew, Bob Weideback, the Gages great-great-grandson, and the portraits they donated.

Summer Program for Youth

CCC Golf Classic Raises

$85,000 for Scholarships

The Glasstown Arts District announces

that there is still time to register your budding artists for the 16th Annual Art
Creates Excellence (ACE) summer youth
art program.
The cost of the program has never
been raised since it began in 2000, executive director Marianne Lods said. There
is still availability for children in the 7 to 9
years and 10 to 12 years of age. The teen
class is completely full.

Despite the chilly, rainy conditions,

more than 120 golfers turned out in force
on June 3 for Cumberland County
Colleges 15th annual School Counts! Golf
Classic at the Sand Barrens Country Club.
The tournament, sponsored by the CCC
Foundation, raised some $85,000. To date,
more than $1.3 million in yearly School
Counts! scholarships have been awarded.

Your child can be enrolled for one week

or all four, and classes start on July 6 and
end on July 31. The youths attend from 9
a.m. till 12 noon. Most classes are held at the
Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts,
22 N. High Street, Millville with one week
at Clay College only a few buildings away.

BOOKS
(Continued from cover)
JESSICA GREEN, who serves up lemonade, cookies, and books, nourishes both
body and mind at Bogarts Books in
Millville. Green specializes in Young Adult
books. I get enough of real life. I need a
little fantasy, a little magic. One of her
favorites is Miss Peregrines Home for
Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs as well
as its sequel, Hollow City. It mixes time
travel in and has vintage photographs. It
adds a little more mystery to the book.
Another pick is Dorothy Must Die by
Danielle Page. It is a twist on The Wizard

of Oz. What happens if Dorothy is the evil

one? The magic is out of whack and they
have to fix it. Bogarts is thinking about
putting together a Young Adult Book Club.
If interested, they should contact the
store. I would definitely lead it.
LINDA EISENBERG, owner of A Novel
Idea, Chapter Two, has been in the book
business for more than 30 years and is also
an avid reader. That is my ideal lifeto
just sit in a corner and do nothing but
read. Her store, located on the upper level
of the Landis Marketplace, offers both
new and used books.
For women, Eisenberg says, The
Wager of Hearts Series by Nancy

Herknessshe is an author from North

Jersey. It is contemporary romance with a
little bit of intrigue, comedy, all rolled into
one. Another author who is little known is
Mary McNear. She has the Butternut Lake
Series. Its a page-turner.
For men, I recommend Lee Child,
another New Jersey author. His is the Jack
Reacher series. I sell a lot of them. They are
suspense and intrigue. Eisenberg recently
hosted an event with 12 local writers and
encourages shoppers to try local talent.
SHARON KEWISH, Associate Professor of
English at Cumberland County College,
also chairs the One Book, One College
(OBOC) program. They select one book per

year for students, staff, faculty, and the

community to read; the programs climax is
the authors visit to the college in the fall.
Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline
is this years pick. It is fiction, but its
based on a real situation. It was a group of
religious do-gooders in East Coast cities
who were trying to eliminate homeless
children. They put them on trains to take
them to the Midwest. Some were adopted
into kind and generous homes; some were
treated as slaves and abused. Though not a
light read, she says it has humor and irony.
My favorite mystery writer is
Elizabeth George. Most of the books focus
on the same core of characters. It is set in
present-day England. One that Im just
waiting for is Harper Lees new book, due
out in July. To Kill a Mockingbird was the
first time I was aware of what a book
could do; that novel made me want to
focus on books for a living. Go Set a
Watchman was Lees first novel, but the
manuscript was lost.
VORACIOUS READER JOHN VAN
ORDEN, owner of Berman Printing &
Stamp and oft-substitute in the Millville
Schools, is a walking encyclopedia. I read
four books at a time. I read a lot. I read
everything. Right now I am reading KL: A
History of the Nazi Concentration Camps. Its
a great book. Sometimes one of my books is
so fascinating, I put the others down for a
while. But the KL book I can only read for
so long, then I get angry and have to read

Richland
The town welcomes BocCone Ristorante Italiano.

uthentic is the first word that

comes to mind when I think
about Richland, NJs newest
businessBocCone Ristorante
Italiano. The combination of the tantalizing aroma wafting through the dining
room, the restaurants dcor, the choices
on its brand new lunch and dinner menus,
and the owners wonderful Italian accent
scream authenticity.
Owner Giovanni Lucignano is an
expert when it comes to Italian food.
Hes the former owner of the Positano
Restaurant in Vineland. He also finetuned his craft at Illianos Ristorante in
Hammonton where he was chef for six
years. So what brings him to Richland?
My wife wanted me to open a new
restaurant, said Lucignano. She knows
how much I love to cook and how much I
enjoyed my time running Positanos, so she
encouraged me to start something new.
Wisely, he took his wifes advice and is
now the proud new owner of BocCone
Ristorante Italiano. Many of my customers from Positanos have come to dine
with us and I hope more will follow, said
Lucignano. I invite people to come and
try our food and then tell us what they
think. We want to make sure we are making our customers happy.
So far, so good. In fact, as I was interviewing Lucignano, a lunch customer
stopped by our table to let him know that
everything was delicious and that she sent
a family in over the weekend.
They loved it, said Diane Cristiano.
Even the pickier eaters in the family
enjoyed their meals.
This was Cristianos sixth visit to
BocCone since it opened. The food is just
wonderful and the service is excellent.
It seems that Cristiano isnt alone as
Lucignano mentioned that many of his
customers are returning at least once or
twice each week. In the restaurant world,
thats a good sign.
Speaking of good, you wont believe the
restaurants menus. Dinner choices
include nine different appetizers, homemade soups, fresh salads prepared with
local produce, six pasta dishes, and beef,
veal, chicken, pork and seafood entrees.
I buy my own produce locally every day,
said Lucignano. Our seafood is also delivered daily. Everything we make is fresh.

BocCone Ristorante Italiano owner Giovanni

Lucignano formerly owned Positanos and
brought his love to cookand a few familiar
recipesto the new location.

Customer favorites include the Grilled

Clams appetizer, the Gorgonzola Misti salad
(especially among lunch guests), Veal Osso
Bucco and Tuscan Chicken entrees, and the
Cannoli and Chocolate Lava desserts. Of
course, anything with the words chocolate
and lava in the same sentence works for me.
The restaurants lunch menu is also
impressive. It offers a reasonably priced
sampling of the dinner menu, plus three
extra Specialty Salads and five types of
paninis. Both menus have selections made
especially for kids. If a private party is
more your style, BocCone has a special
room that can hold up to 20 guests. They
will also bring the food to you and offer
full catering and banquet menus.
Hungry yet? Why not treat yourself
and head on over to BocCone in Richland?
Its BYOB, so bring along a bottle wine
and prepare yourself for a scrumptious
meal. To preview the restaurants menus,
check out the specials, or leave a review,
visit BocCone's Facebook page. I

Were also continuing to work on and

develop our Adopt-a-Block initiative. This
past Saturday was the second time that a
group of our volunteers met at the miniparks at Landis Avenue and the Boulevard
and then spread out to cover entire square
blocks around our downtowncleaning up
trash, and doing other things to make our
downtown look its best. This takes place
the third Saturday of each month, from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. Come out and join, bring a
friend, and talk to organizations about
coming out to help us. The more we have,
the more we can get done.
This past Saturday we also had a
Fathers Day celebration at Landis
MarketPlace, which included a childrens
craft lesson and face-painting for the kids.
Were planning to have activities of this
sortmicro-eventseach Saturday in the
market. In addition to this and the
Anniversary Celebration, weve had a Kids
Day and health fair at the market. More
such activities are on the way involving
businesses from throughout the Avenue.
You might have already read about the
Jersey Fresh Festival, set for Sunday,
August 9, at Giampietro Park. Stay tuned
for more information.
Further on down the road will be our A
Taste of Vineland/Volunteer Recognition
Event, planned for Wednesday, October 14.
Were returning to the Greenview Inn at
Eastlyn Golf Course for this signature
Main Street Vineland event. Were already
hard at work planning it. Tickets will go on
sale shortly and sponsorship opportunities
are available. Again, stay tuned.
Of course, the Holiday Parade will be
coming up Thanksgiving weekend and
were hard at work planning that, as well.
So, you can see that, throughout the summer, were constantly working and planning
to make our downtown a great place to
work, to shop, to eat, or for entertainment.
***
I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the success of our events and
projects so far and those who are busy helping us put together our upcoming events.
If youre not already at our table, come and
join us and help make a difference. I

ummers officially right around the

corner, as I write this, and will be
here by the time you read this, but
summertime doesnt mean a lull in
the action here at Main Street Vineland.
Yes, the Landis MarketPlace Anniversary
Celebration and Cruise Down Memory Lane
are over and the next big event planned is
the Jersey Fresh Festival (which Main Street
Vineland is supporting, but not organizing)
on August 9, at Giampietro Park. In the
meantime, however, we still have a lot going
onbehind the scenes and out in view.
We just had our real estate broker/agents
tour of available downtown vacant properties on Tuesday and we will be following up
with an additional tour in the fall. These
tours are meant to bring brokers and agents
to help fill these spaces. We want to fill these
spaces with quality, sustainable businesses
that will fulfill the vision of our downtown
that we are buildingand prepare our
downtown for the millennial generation.
We see the millennial, Gen X, and Gen Y
groups as the generations to take over as
business owners and leaders and to carry
our downtown into the future. Toward that
end, were actively working on forming a
Millennial Advisory Board and are looking
for people from those age groupsfrom
their late teens to their mid-40swho are
interested in sharing their vision and what
they would like our downtown to be. The
board will have 12 members and will play a
very important role in our downtowns
future development. Their first meeting
will be on Wednesday, July 1, at 8:30 a.m., at
the Main Street Vineland office, 603 E.
Landis Avenue. I already have interns who
are working hard on researching how to
apply current business models to our downtown and the board is an expansion of that
concept. If youre interested in joining us
for the inaugural meeting, contact the Main
Street Vineland office at 856-794-8653 or email rswanson@vineland city.org.
If youre a member of one of the older
generationssuch as the baby boomerswe
still want you to be part of our team. Those
generations make up a large portion of our
business owners and have been among our
most ardent supporters. We just want to be
open to the younger generation as well to
add to the variety of input and allow our
downtown to appeal to a wide spectrum of
potential business owners and customers.

Bridor Inc. Expands Vineland Facility, Staffing
Bridor Inc., producer of authentic
European croissants, pastries and
breads for the American retail and foodservice industry, announced that it has
completed a $32 million expansion of
its U.S. facility in Vineland. The newly
inaugurated line doubles Bridors production of its signature croissants and
pastriesincluding brioches, chocolatines and lattice pastriesand enables
production of savory Bistro items.
The expansion increases the original
facility by 47,000 square feet and created 45 new jobs, raising the number of
employees to over 175. The new production line incorporates technology and
equipment modeled after the companys
French operations, which have long set
the standard for quality and efficiency.
Among other benefits, it will facilitate
the incorporation of natural, homemade
fillings that use distinctive, locallysourced ingredients.
This expansion represents our commitment to the U.S. market. The demand
for our products continues to increase as retail and foodservice operators discover how Bridor meets their needs for premium products that consistently deliver
100 percent quality, said Jean-Francois Duquesne, CEO, Bridor Inc. and Bridor
USA Inc. Our pastries, croissants and breads offer superior baking performance,
and taste as delicious as they look, every time. This not only makes them appealing to consumers, but keeps them coming back for more, he added.
Bridors line of more than 100 croissants, sweet and savory pastries, and breads
are made by Master Bakers who have earned this distinguished title by completing
extensive apprenticeships and training in Europe. They travel the world to stay
ahead of consumer trends and baking innovations, while catering to the preferences of the American palate. Bridors artisan baked goods are endorsed by chefs
worldwide and favored by leading foodservice and retail bakery operators. Bridors
pre-proofing techniques bring another distinctive advantage to customers.
Pre-proofing brings significant benefits to operators. In addition to saving
time, it enables them to cycle bake in batches and offer pastries fresh from the
oven, all day long. Pre-proofing can significantly reduce shrink, and also delivers
consistent quality and appearance throughout the day, said Jean-Pierre
Hyacinthe, VP of R&D and Innovations in North America.

Nail and Iron Works

Growing from a single mill located on the bank of
the Cohansey River, the industry helped shape
Bridgetons history.

ne of the leading industries in

Bridgetons history was the
Cumberland Nail and Iron
Works, a 19th century complex
that grew from a single mill located on a
bank of the Cohansey River. The company
was established early in the 1800s and fell
just short of entering the next century, but
its legacy and the grounds on which it
existed have continued to serve the city in
the years since.
The individuals usually credited with
the formation of the Cumberland Nail and
Iron Works are the brothers Benjamin and
David Reeves. Benjamin was born in
Gloucester County in 1779 and began his
career as a Philadelphia merchant in 1811.
According to the Annals of the Sinnott,
Rogers, Coffin, Corlies, Reeves, Bodine and
Allied Families by Mary Elizabeth Sinnott,
it was around the same time that he and
his cousin Clement began a ferry trade
that ran from the foot of Market Street in
Philadelphia. For the next four years, this
would be his occupation.
Born in 1793, David was also a
Gloucester County native and, by the age
of 21, was approached by his brother who
asked that they work together on a project
set in South Jersey. The idea was to build
a mill for the manufacture of nails on the
west bank of the Cohansey River just
above the Commerce Street Bridge in the
Cumberland County seat of Bridgeton, or
as it was still known at the time, Bridge
Town. Like the numerous glass factories
sprouting up in the area, a factory of this
type was both necessary and risky, its success dependent upon sales beyond this
geographic location.
According to the South Jersey
Magazine article Bridgetons Historic
City Park, groundwork for the planned
mill began in 1814 when Port Elizabeth
resident James Lee and Bridgeton-based
Ebenezer Seeley and Smith Bowen purchased the undeveloped area where the
companys buildings would soon sit. The
trio also saw fit to construct a dam that
created Sunset Lake and gave them the
water-power rights to the area. Bowen, its
reported, eventually sold his share of the
rights to Benjamin and David Reeves.
The South Jersey Magazine article
clearly identifies the setting that would

harbor the industrial complex: The lake

was at the northern end of the tract and
the nail factory was built at the southern
end. They were connected by a mile-long
mill race [channels that conduct water to
and from a water wheel] so a head and fall
[channel] of twelve feet could be created.
According to local tradition, this raceway
was dug by a man and his two sons but
undoubtedly they also used horses and
scoops. It was still a monumental task
which would require considerable energy
even with modern machinery. Today the
waterway is simply known as the
Raceway.
By 1815, construction of the mill was
underway and the Reeves and their partners James and Joseph Whitaker and
Robert S. Buck soon opened shop on the
bank of the river, operating by waterpower and manufacturing nails through
the commonplace method of reheated
scrap-iron. It is reported that the iron
used by the company was imported from
Sweden.
The success of Reeves, Buck & Co., as
the business was christened, was swift. By
1822, the company had 26 employees and
16 machines and was churning out 10 tons
of nails each week.
The skills and professionalism expected of the companys employees was guaranteed by a set of rules to which each
worker was required to adhere. By todays
regulations, they may seem a bit harsh,
but these were the standards. Certain
demands of this strict set of rules threatened the termination of jobs if not followed. One rule warned that any man or
boy found washing up or preparing to
leave before the bell rings will be discharged.
The stipulations did not seem to deter
individuals from working there, however,
and over the decades the company built a
loyal workforce. Throughout the 19th century, a devoted and experienced staff
helped maintain the efficiency the company was known for. By the end of the 1880s,
the business was filled with employees
whose employment there ranged from 20
to 60 years. I

Century Savings Bank recently celebrated its Sesquicentennial Anniversary. On

June 9, a host of state and local dignitaries, community partners and customers
gathered in the lobby of the Banks Upper Deerfield location to commemorate its
century and a half of service to the communitya milestone distinction that makes
Century one of Americas oldest banks.
The event began with opening remarks from David J. Hemple, Centurys President
and CEO, and J. Alan Woodruff, Chairman of the Board of Directors. Proclamations
were then presented to the Bank by state and local dignitaries, including Robert
Geist, field representative for Congressman Frank LoBiondo; Assemblymen Adam
J. Taliaferro and John J. Burzichelli; Darlene Barber of the Board of Chosen
Freeholders; and the Honorable Albert Kelly, Mayor of the city of Bridgeton.
No company gets to be 150 years old without the support of its employees,
customers and the communities it serves, said Hemple. We mark this occasion
by celebrating our achievements as an organization and reveling in the many relationships weve established along the way.
For a century and a half, families and generations have looked to Century
Savings Bank as a trusted resource for financial solutions, said J. Alan Woodruff,
Century Savings Bank Board Chairman. We thank you for your trust in us as we
hope to serve you for many more centuries to come.
Century Savings Bank, originally Bridgeton Savings Fund and Building Association,
was founded by a group of local businessmen who wanted to help the community
grow. The Bank opened its doors for business on June 9, 1865 with $2,096.50 total
in assets. During a period of unrest in the country, Century emerged as a source of
strength and stability, offering a fresh start for many in the city of Bridgeton.
Giving back to the community has been an integral part of Centurys mission
throughout the years. In keeping with this tradition, Century awarded donations of
$5,000 to each of the following local charities: Hug-A-Bear Foundation, Inc.,
Habitat for Humanity of Cumberland County, Bayshore Center at Bivalve, Bethany
Grace Community Church in support of the Bridgeton Code Blue Homeless
Program, and Resources for Independent Living.
The event also served as the official start of Centurys 150 Days of Giving initiative. From June 9 through November 5, special events will be thrown, giveaways
will be awarded and random acts of kindness will be performed throughout the
Banks three county service area, all compliments of the Bank.
To commemorate such a momentous achievement, Century debuted its special
centurysb150.com website. Whether through a mobile device or via the new interactive kiosks made available at the branches, viewers will now be able to keep
abreast of the banks yearlong celebration happenings and explore the history of
the bank, the City of Bridgeton and the country as a whole.
The days festivities concluded with the unveiling of a special gift to the City of
Bridgeton, presented to Mayor Albert Kelly. The bank announced that it would fund
the new archway that will span Mayor Aiken Drive marking the entrance to the
Bridgeton City Park and Cohanzick Zoo.

endeavors Father Pete!

End of an Era
Memories of accomplishments in Father Petes
15-year tenure ... { BY CAROL KIRCHMAN }
his final Sunday in June marks the end
of a 15-year stay for the beloved pastor
of St. Padre Pio Parish. Father Peter
Saporito will be moving on and the community will be saying farewell to a true friend and
family member. Hundreds upon hundreds of
people are expected to attend his final mass
celebration at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 28 at
our Lady of Pompeii church in Vineland.
Father Pete started his pastorship in
September 2000 at Our Lady of Pompeii
Church, which later merged with St. Mary
Church and St. Joes in January 2003 to what
is now known as St. Padre Pio Parish. There is
much to celebrate of his accomplishments.
Father Pete likes to refer to his stay here as
home and the parishioners as family. His
goal was simplebring the people together,
bring them closer to God, and make the
church a vibrant active community where
people want to be. Not just on Sunday, but
every day. A place to feel welcome and a part
of something bigger. Well, he accomplished
that and more.
First up on the list was having a festival
and as he gathered up a group of volunteers,
the St. Anthony Festival was formed and was
held in June. It was a four-day event that
included a midway and rides.
Then, with the merging of the parishes
coinciding with the canonization of St. Padre
Pio, the merged parishes became St. Padre Pio
Parish. So, it was only fitting to move the festival to the saints feast day in September and
name it in honor of St. Padre Pio.
The St. Padre Pio Festival is now in its 13th
year and has grown to be an event where people travel great distances by bus loads to
attend this day-long festival and some even
have traveled from as far away as Italy. The
day begins with an Italian mass and is followed by a procession and mass in celebration
of St. Padre Pio, culminating in a day filled
with food and fun for all.
The parishioners of St. Padre Pio Parish are
the ones from soup to nuts that come together
as a community to make this event happen
with Father Pete at the helm. Every year the
attendance grows with over 4,000 people converging in the small East Vineland farming
community. The food is plentiful, the company
is always good, local farmers provide the produce, theres music and celebration and St.
Padre Pio is at the core of the celebration.
Father Pete has a knack for bringing people together and finding the right folks for
any job. He can easily spot someone for the
job and has the unique ability of getting them
to buy in. He places his trust in them to get
the job done and get it done they do. That is
why St. Padre Pio Parish is now home to over
1,300 families. Saporito recognizes that the
church is not a building where members
come to visit each Sunday, but it is the people

that make the Church. From his very first

days as pastor, he set his sights on bringing
the people in and having them take ownership. He can often be heard saying, this is
your parish and your family.
Grace Hoffner, longtime friend and
parishioner had this to say of Father Pete,
The best way to describe Pete, is that he is an
imperfect man, who lives in a perfect manmade world. The world says, charity begins at
home, take care of number one, it's not my
problem. Well, that's not Father Pete. He
gives without reserve, he places himself last
and tries to take on everyone's problems.
Father Pete is a large man with an equally
large heart. The one thing that I really love
about Pete, is that he never negates an idea.
He is extremely supportive and recognizes
talent. And once he gives you a job to do he
never gets in your way.
Always filled with ideas, he never rests on
his laurels and is always planning programs
that provide spiritual formation and always
focus on bringing families back to church.
Each year ,missions have been held that
included the likes of Grayson Brown, Hard As
Nails Ministry, Vince Ambrosetti Music
Ministry, and Father McAlear, OMI Ministry
of Hope & Healing.
Another simple but very effective change
Father Pete made was when he first arrived.
He added a center aisle to Our Lady of
Pompeii church so that brides-to-be would
want to get married there. A pond was built at
the entry of the church and provides a serene
tranquil setting for reflection and a favorite
place for the children to watch the fish both
before and after church while moms and dads
gather to catch up.

Other additions include the Childrens

Chapel where daily masses are held and the
Garden of Saints where people can visit or
pray and where Easter Sunrise mass is celebrated on Easter morning.
Each religious holiday is treated with
deserving reverence and Father Pete never
settles for ordinary. The Easter Celebration
always includes a Holy Thursday liturgy with
the washing of feet, breaking of bread and
sharing of wine as part of the mass. Then, a
Tableau was performed that traced the steps
of Jesus in silence with parishioners taking
parts of each biblical person.
The Tableau has now grown to a fullfledged production of the Passion of Christ
that was first held each year in the church
then moved to St. Mary School and now has
taken center stage at the Frank A. Guarancini
Performing Arts Center at Cumberland
County College with the St. Padre Pio Players
prayerfully acting out the final days of Jesus
life and resurrection.
Father Peter even had the idea of holding a
Tent Revival in the month of June and summer thunderstorms tried to hamper attendance but for those who attended, it was well
worth it.
Father Petes love of music is evident in the
many songs he has taught the congregation at
Sunday services. He not only expects them to
remember, he coaxes them to sing. The music
ministry of the church has grown to include
the adult choir, childrens choir, the Christian
Rock Band and the St. Padre Pio Players. He
has also incorporated liturgical dance into
many celebrations.
His love of music doesnt stop at religious
services but includes the yearly Jerry Blavat
dances, The Rat Pack dinner shows a 70s
Dance, western dances and bringing the
Italian legend and music great Patrizio
Buanne concert that was held at the Landis
Theater.
Father Pete is never afraid to try something that will bring people together and is
always willing to take the chance. Another
example of these programs is the St. Padre
Pio Players, which has brought the Broadway
stage to the St. Mary School Auditorium with
Nunsense, Nuncrackers, and Nunsense the II
Coming, a Broadway review and Salute to

Marys School, an Easter Sunrise Mass, and

an integral role in the life of church and
community for the past 15 years.

Military. All of these events would not have

been possible if it were not for the support of
the pastor and his faith in the dedicated volunteers and the congregation.
St. Padre Pio Parish has blossomed into a
parish of the people and they welcome the
new Pastor, Father Robert Sinatra. We wish
Father Peter Saporito peace and all good
things and thank him for breathing life into
our church community and to quote Father
Pete as he is often heard to say, God is good
all the time and all the time God is good.

you at the Festival. I

greatest pain.
Another parishioner, Marie
Dandrea, praised Father Pete for his
staunch support of the St. Padre Pio
Shrine in Landisville and just generally for being a great priest.
A significant part of Father Petes
legacy will be the churchs annual Fall
Festival.
Under Father Petes guidance the
festival has grown each and every
year to become a calendar event for
not only the parish, but literally thousands for people who come to enjoy
the traditional Italian music and food.
Another legacy Father Pete leaves
behind is the parishs online prayer
site, which he established to spread
the power of St. Padre Pio to all the
faithful.
His true legacy for most parishioners, however, will be the fact that
he was forever doing something, moving the parish forward through song,
dance and example.
This Sunday, June 28, the parish
will be celebrating Father Petes last
Mass at 10:30 a.m.
Following the mass, all are invited
to attend a small reception for Father
Pete at Rosary Hall, located behind
the church at Dante and Cornucopia
avenues in Vineland.
Please call the rectory at 856-6917526 is you plan to attend so that

Father Peter Saporito will be finishing his 15-year stewardship of the

Saint Padre Pio Parish in East
Vineland at the end of this month.
And while Father Pete (thats how
everyone refers to him) may soon be
gone, he will leave large footprints for
his successor, Father Rob Sinatra.
Dr. Paul Trivellini, a parishioner
and member of the parishs St.
Joseph Society, summed up Fr. Petes
tenure as leaving the parish better
than he found it.
Fr. Pete has touched many lives
over his 15-year stewardship. There
probably isnt a family in East
Vineland that hasnt felt his presence
over the past decade and a half.
As one parishioner put it, (Father
Pete) has been at more of our family
events than some distant relatives.
Hes presided over weddings,
funerals, confirmations, baptisms,
family illnesses, and more.
And, if he wasnt there to personally oversee the event, he was the one,
as steward of the parish, who oversaw
its execution.
When he came to the parish in
September, 2000, it was still Our
Lady of Pompeii Parish.
He coordinated the merger of St.
Marys Church and Our Lady of
Pompeii in January of 2002 when
they combined to become the St.
Padre Pio Parish.
The merger was not without its
challenges but, according to parishioner Jim Sauro, God knew just what
our Lady of Pompeii needed to help
move St. Marys Church and school
forward to where they are today and
Fr. Pete was a real blessing.
Pearl Giordano spoke of Fr. Petes
compassion and heart.
When our son, Jerry, passed three
years ago, Father Pete helped my husband and I through a very difficult
day, she said. He just seemed to
know what was needed and provided

The Role of Pastor

Fulfilled
Webster defines pastor as a spiritual overseer. Father Peter Saporito,
whose term as pastor of St. Padre
Pio Parish will come to an end in
the next few days, embodies that
term. Fr. Pete has fulfilled this role
in ways that reach the greatest
number of parishionersfrom traditional liturgies with inspirational
homilies to spiritual and social
activities.
Under Fr. Petes leadership, the
parish has held events large and
small including a tent revival, healing masses, parish retreats, parish
dances, parish picnics, the Palm
Sunday dinner and, of course, the
Padre Pio Festival which draws visitors from multiple states to participate in beautiful liturgies as well as
an afternoon of fun. While some of
these events are purely spiritual
and others are social, they serve a
common theme of providing spiritual guidance while fostering a sense
of fellowship and support among
the parishioners.
The impact of Fr. Petes efforts to
inspire the community is reflected
in the response from the parishioners who fill the church for the
many liturgical services conducted
throughout the year in addition to
weekly mass, including Holy Week
services at Easter a sunrise mass in
the garden of saints that was developed under Fr. Petes guidance.
Fr. Petes efforts to provide spiritual enrichment include participating in a local radio broadcast on
Saturday mornings and making
himself available for individual
meetings for those in need of his
guidance. Many of us in the parish
have seen the tremendous impact
he has had on this parish and community. Fr. Pete is a humble person
who will probably get annoyed at
me for writing this article. Perhaps
one of his best qualities is that he
refuses to focus on his many successes and is more concerned with
those he feels that he has not
reached.
I have benefited greatly from
having developed a close friendship
with Fr. Pete over the years and I
know that there are countless other
people who have as well. We all feel
greatly enriched spiritually from his
stewardship and for this reason we
will miss him.
Stephen Barse

The Saint Josephs Society is

an organization of men who are
dedicated to serving the Parish of
Saint Padre Pio. We serve under
the auspices of Saint Joseph, our
patron saint. By donating time,
talents and labor to support various events and physical projects
we attempt to improve the churches, the grounds, the ancillary
buildings and the spiritual events
of our Parish. We always attempt
to complete our projects at little
or no cost to the church. We hold
one annual fundraising event, a
take-out chicken barbeque, which
is usually held in March. Other projects are supported through donations. The
society was founded on April 17, 1910 and is always looking for volunteers to
join and donations toward projects.
The Society attempts to work in ways that compliment the goals of our
parish and to not create any burden upon the Pastor and staff. With Father
Peters support, the society has completed numerous projects such as replacement windows, a concrete ramp at the handicapped entrance, a new produce
stand for the annual festival, reconstruction of the garage at St. Marys cemetery, repairs to commercial doors, painting projects, a redesign to the storage
closet for tables and chairs and construction of the barbeque pit. An ongoing
project that we have recently undertaken is the restoration of the Grotto of
Our Lady of Lourdes and Mount Carmel, a labor of love created by Father
Eugene Fitenti, the fifth pastor of Our Lady of Pompeii Church. So far, with the
donations of many, we have replaced the fountain, replaced interior and exterior lighting with LED lights, increased the sidewalk area and installed granite
benches. Father Peter has supported all of these projects, offering his time and
encouragement whenever we had a question.
Father Peter, you have done a superb job under trying and difficult circumstances. There is an old saying that goes something like leave it better than
you found it. You have certainly done that. While we are sorry to see you go,
others will now benefit from what we have learned together. And although we
will not be close in proximity, we will remain close in our hearts.
RememberGod is good, all the time! Thank you for guiding us, for your
friendship, and for your support of our humble goals.

It is Not Good Bye, It is "Fare Thee Well," Good Friend

Father Pete has a heart that is larger than life. He has a faith that is beyond
measure. Father Pete has opened his heart to those who are grieving, lost and
feel forsakenthose in his flock with greater needs than his own, those with
crosses that have become too heavy to bear. Father Pete has been there to
comfort those dealing with the many pressures of life and to encourage those
who have become lost along the way.
St. Padre Pio Parish has been blessed with a priest that truly lives his faith.
I am one of those touched by his kindness and goodness. When our son Jerry
passed three years ago, Father Pete helped my husband and me through very
difficult days; he just seemed to know what was needed and provided comfort
and peace at the moments of our greatest pain. We have seen him reach out
to many others in their moments of grief and loss with the same compassion
and caring.
Jim Sauro said, "God knew just what our Lady of Pompeii needed to help
move the church and St. Mary's School forward to where they are today, and
that was a real blessing! Tomorrow he will find himself exactly where God
wants him to be."
Father Pete has spent many hours lifting those in crisis and offering hope to
many who have been struggling to find their way.
His mark has been left in every corner of St. Pio Parish and on the hearts
and lives of those in his Parish Family. I have watched him buy food for the
hungry and fuel for those without heat in the dead of winter, with never an
expectation of repayment; he is a humble man with an indomitable spirit.
Marie Dandrea said Father Pete has always been a staunch supporter of the
St. Pio Shrine in Landisville, and, he is a great Priest."
Father reminds us that God is good all of the time, and, all of the time God
is good! Father Pete has said:
To those I may have wronged, I ask forgiveness.
To those I may have helped, I wish I did more.
To those I was unable to help, I ask for understanding,
To those who helped me, I sincerely thank you so much...
These are words that express the feelings of his heart. Father Pete has

Jackie Greer said, "Many years ago I left my home and family in England,
and I was afraid, but God puts us where he wants us to be. I then met Padre
Pio and he became one of my most special and dearest friends, and then I
