ofApril1977,ItWasTakenoverByTheUniversityofSriLankaUnder
PowersofTheUniversityActNo01Of1972.SincethenthisbecametheInstituteof
AyurvedaMedicine.ThenitcametobetheInstituteofIndigenousMedicine(IIM)ofthe
UniversityofColomboin1980.
Thisprogrammefirstinitiatedin1929waslateramendedintheyears1934,1941andagain
in1961,1964,1965,1966,and1974.Furtherthediplomacertificateawardedbythisinstitute
wasrecognizedbytheIndianayurvedicActasabasicqualificationinpursuingpostgraduate
studiesinAyurvedainIndianUniversities.Fromherinception,theBorellaAyurveda
HospitalbecametheteachingHospitaloftheInstitute.AfterthetakeoveroftheInstituteof
IndigenousMedicinebytheUniversity,theadministrationoftheteachinghospitalcame
undertheeducationandhospitalboardofthedepartmentofAyurvedaandtreatment
responsibilitiesforteachingpurposeofthestudentsattheteachinghospitalwerecarriedout
underthedirectsupervisionoftheacademicstaffoftheInstituteofIndigenousMedicine.
WiththeimplementionoftheActNo31of1961,thediplomaawardedunderD.I.M.S.was
amendedasD.A.M.S.after1963.Since1982,theB.A.M.S.hasbeenineffectasanongoing
programme.

CurrentstatusandproposedNewtrends.
ThisisthefirstandforemosthithertoestablishedInstituteamongsttheother
UniversityaffiliatedInstitutes.TheacademicstaffservingintheInstituteof
IndigenousMedicineatpresenthaveobtainedtheirfirstdegreeinthisinstituteand
theirpostgraduatedegreeseithernationallyorinternationally.Frominception,the
AyurvedicsystemofEducationofferedattheIIMwascarriedoutincomparisonwith
modernscience.Anamendedcurriculumthereforeisatimelynecessitytoproduce
morecompetentAyurvedicgraduatedoctors,therebyensuringabetterpublicservice
fosteringtheAyurvedaandtraditionalconceptsinlightofmoderntechnology.

EXAMINATIONS
6.1
Examinationcriteriaandrelevantstatutoryregulations
1.Examinationsforfirst,second,ThirdandFinalB.A.M.S.willbeconductedattheend
ofeachacademicstage
2.Therewillbewritten,oralpracticalandcontinuousassessmentstoo.Theyare
compulsory.
3.Thecontinuousassessmentswillbeconductedbytherelevantdepartments.During
eachacademicstagetwocontinuousassessmentswillbeconductedoneachsubject.
TheFirstcontinuousassessmentwillbecarriedoutduringthecourseofthe2
nd
term
andthesecondcontinuousassessmentduringthe3
rd
term.Atotalof20markswillbe
awardedi.c.08marksforthe1
st
assessmentand12forthesecondrespectively.These
markswillbeaddedtothefinalmarksoftheexaminationsContinuousassessments
arecompulsory

7.Studentsshouldregisterthemselvesforeachacademicstage.Thestudentswhohave
completedtheperviousstagewillbegrantedtheregistrationforthenextstage.
Registrationforthenextstageshouldbeobtainedwithinaperiodofweekofthe
releaseoftheresults.Ifthefirststageiscompletelypassedtheregistrationforthe
nextstagewillbeautomaticallygranted.Intheeventoffailinvganysubjectonlya
temperioryregistrationwillbegranted.Thestudentsgetqualifiedforthepermanent
registrationonlyiftheycompletethesubjectstheyfaildattherepeatexamination.
Howeverthetemperoryregistrationwillbecancelledifthestudentsareunableto
passthesubjecttheyhavefailedattherepeatexamination.Atsuchinstances,the
previousstageofexaminationshouldbecompleted.Suchstudentswillbepermitted
todtusyinthepreviousacademicstagewithoutaregistration.Onlyoneannual
examinationandonerepeatexaminationwillbeconductedduringtheperiodofan
academicstage.

9.Aminimumof75%oftheattendanceforthelecturespracticalsandtutorialclassess
foreachsubjectiscompulsorytoappearattheannualexaminationofarelevant
academicstage.
10.Thestudentswhoareunabletotakeuptheexaminationduetomedicalreasons
shouldproducemedicalcertificateswithinsevendaysofthecommencementofthe
examinationsuchstudentsshouldappearthesupplementaryexamination,onlyfor
written,practicalorvivacomponentsofthatparticularsubjectorsubjects.Themarks
obtainedpreviouslyforcontinousassessmentswillbeaddedtothefinalmarksofthe
relevantsubjects.Appearingforevenonesubjectatanexaminationiscountedasa
sittingoftheexamination.
11.Whenastudentproducesmedicalcertificatesmorethanonceheorsheshouldappear
beforeaMedicalBoardappointedbytheInstitute.Thereportoftheboardwillbe
submittedtothesectionalcommittee.Thedecisionofthesectionalcommittee
regardingthismattershallbefinal.
12.Amaximumofonlyfourconsecutiveattemptswillbepermittedtocompleteeachof

academicstages(ofthedegree)andfiveattemptsinthe4
