Dear Students,

Thank you for your letter to DG Environment which I was asked to answer. We take
good note of your positive assessment o.f renewable energy in generai and wirrd power in
perrticular in corxtrast to nuclear power.
We would agree that Slovenia still has a large potentialLto develop its wind power sector.
Of course, the rules in place to prevent and to limit damrage to the environment need to be
respected. According to the Renewab,le Energy Directive Slovenia has the obligation to
reach a share of 25a/o olf renewable energy in its energy consumption by 2020. Given
Slovenia's endowrnent with natural resources this target seems achievable, but continued
political and financiatr efforts are needed.
We see your commitrnent as a valuable contribution to this and would encourage you to
continue to intervene in the civil dialogue in your oounl.ry, since the choice olflthe energy
mix is a Member State's decision withLirn the frameworlk of the common goals agreed in
the EU.
