SAFE WORK PROCEDURES

EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROL

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
1.
All work must be carried out in accordance with any applicable Environmental Management Plan or Project Management Plan.

Key processes to be followed

Relevant approvals, authorisations, licences and permits must be obtained prior to
work commencing.
Inspect work areas to assess likely impact of clearing prior to commencing work.
Assess likelihood of soil erosion taking into account, type of ground, area exposed,
slope, and possibility of and likely amount of rain while ground is vulnerable.
Assess likely run off from disturbed areas and ensure that sediment control
measures are installed along likely water flows.
Minimise vegetation removal, especially on slopes or on banks of waterways.
Rehabilitate disturbed areas by dampening, and then seeding or mulching over.
Check erosion controls weekly and after each rainfall to ensure continued working.
Mix hydrated lime as appropriate for areas where soils are difficult to stabilise.
Install sedimentation controls downstream of stockpiles and areas to be disturbed
prior to work commencing to intercept future sediment.
Check sediment controls weekly and after each rainfall to maintain effectiveness.
Clean minor soil spills from gutters and hard surfaces daily at completion of work.
Minimise time that holes and trenches are left open to reduce entry of stormwater.
Keep spoil from trenches and holes well clear of drainage lines.
Place spoil of uphill side of trench or excavation to divert overland water flow.
Pump water from trenches or excavations on to grassed surface where possible.
Backfill as soon as possible, and compact soil making provision for settlement.
Position stockpiles on high level ground away from stormwater drains or gutters.
Position stockpiles at least 40 metres from a watercourse.
Cover stockpiles before leaving work and/or is a rain event is expected.
Use existing access where possible avoid driving on soft or broken ground.
Use a single entry/exit point for vehicles and plant if possible, or else minimise.
Cross gullies and drains at an angle to prevent damage to banks from chassis.
Avoid driving up and down slopes drive across slopes where possible.
Avoid extreme operation (e.g., wheelspin) or sharp turns that may damage surface.
Repair and rehabilitate deep ruts or affected area after vehicle or plant is bogged.
Provide rumble grid at exit from work site to shake mud, dirt and debris from plant
and vehicles leaving site and travelling to clean areas or on public roads.

Precautions / PPE required

Consult with local council and
environmental authority.
Identify potential problem areas.
Plan works so that risk to erosion prone
areas is minimised.
Install sediment controls before clearing or
excavation commences.
Do not remove cover unless necessary.
Rehabilitate areas as soon as possible.
Ensure that controls are in place, and
remain adequate for runoff.
Identify sedimentation sources and
potential water flows.
Ensure that controls are in place, and
remain adequate for runoff.
Minimise amount of open trench or open
holes if rain is expected.
Prevent entry of water into trench.
Do not pump onto bare ground.
Leave fill 50mm high for settlement.
Do not place stockpiles close to
waterways or on flood prone areas.
Traffic management plan for site should
show traffic routes to be followed to
minimise soil erosion.
All drivers must be instructed of routes
and precautions to be observed while
driving vehicle or plant on site.
