31.03.09. Ericsson pushes HSPA world record to 56Mbps.

Ericsson will break its own HSPA world record with the world's first
demonstration of HSPA multi-carrier MIMO technology, providing
peak downlink data rates of 56Mbps, at the CTIA Wireless
exhibition, April 1-3 in Las Vegas, USA.
The increase in speed is achieved thanks to a combination of
multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) and multi-carrier HSPA
technology. MIMO allows for higher peak data rates and increased
spectral efficiency, which provides higher network capacity.
HSPA multi-carrier technology with MIMO, which is currently being
standardized, is scheduled for commercial deployment in 2010. By
the end of 2009, Ericsson will support commercial deployment of
multi-carrier technology with speeds up to 42Mbps - an achievement
successfully demonstrated at the recent Mobile World Conference in
Barcelona.

"Sunset" Phase
most US based technologies are in full retreat, while the
international GSM/W-CDMA standards are proliferating.
TDMA has been hardest hit.
CDMA networks experienced the largest drop in absolute terms.
GSM has, predictably, been the main beneficiary. The range of low
priced handsets available for this technology gives it a material
advantage and over the year.
Finally, the specialist technology iDEN, continues to operate
successfully in its specialist niche.

Mobile users want better video calls, streaming television and faster
downloads, placing more demands on the limited radio spectrum
available to operators. Could handsets that intelligently sense their
radio environment and opportunistically grab free bandwidth be a
solution?
Spectrum management from the network end.
ORACLE (Opportunistic Radio Communications in unLicensed
Environments) project focused instead on making handsets actively
manage how and when they use the network.
ORACLEs pioneering approach promises to minimise bandwidth
saturation in both licensed bands of the radio spectrum, such as that
used to carry mobile phone signals, and unlicensed industrial,
scientific and medical (ISM) bands.

Saturation,

the radio spectrum is probably the most tightly regulated natural

resource in the world.
Recent initiatives have focused on operators sharing information
about network use with each other so that high traffic on one
network can utilise unused bandwidth on another. But I doubt
operators will be very willing to share that information as it could
help their competitors.
The core technology relies on highly sensitive sensors in the
handset that monitor radio spectrum usage by other devices and
base stations in their immediate vicinity, combined with software that
opportunistically decides when and what bandwidth to use when it
becomes available.

Saturation,

The approach is known as Opportunistic Radio (OR) and it could

lead to a dramatic rethink of the way networks are managed.
The technology could, for example, allow handsets to create ad hoc
networks with other mobile devices in their immediate vicinity to
share data, reducing the amount of traffic passing through base
stations and the wider mobile network.
Nonetheless, one of the ORACLE partners, the Technical University
of Dresden, has set up a spin-off company, called Inradios, to
commercially exploit some of the technology developed in the
project, while the partners are also actively involved in developing a
new standard based on the results of their research.
ORACLE received funding under the ICT strand of the EUs Sixth
Framework Programme.

Operators.

"I don't think the future is very promising [for WiMax]. This is a
classic example of industry standards clashing, and somebody
comes out as the winner and somebody has to lose. Betamax was
there for a long time, but VHS dominated the market.
Nokia is a long term backer of LTE as an upgrade path to higher
speed mobile data services, although it does maintain a position
within the WiMAX trade association
"It's my prediction that by 2015, we will have an LTE network that
will cover most of the important places in the world and that will give
us the coverage and capacity we need, said Mr Vanjoki".

LTE can provide data at a sixth of the price of basic W-CDMA. In the
long term, it may be the only way to profitably manage the
increasing demand for data traffic.
Not only does LTE offer cost savings and performance
improvements, like reduced latency, which will enhance growing
data services such as video, TV and gaming, it also offers a full
evolution path. LTE is only just at the beginning of its product life
cycle.
The challenge is for operators to successfully integrate LTE into their
existing operations.
Operator strategies for network evolution: the road to LTE, explores
the four key factors that help to formulate operator deployment
strategy: technology, spectrum, data growth and device availability.

16/04/09 Next-Generation Mobile Broadband Technologies

to Close the Gap With Fixed Broadband

Strategy Analytics is predicting that the majority

of LTE deployments by wireless operators will
use the 2,600 MHz band, creating ample new
opportunities for terminal component vendors.
In Western Europe, most wireless operators are
focusing on the 2,600 MHz frequency as this is
largely clear of incumbent users and provides
the greatest opportunity for swift and effective
deployment.

Mobile operators are expected to fully maximize their high-speed

packet access (HSPA) deployments before eventually deploying 3G
long-term evolution (LTE). Many operators will leapfrog from HSPA
to 3G LTE, as the window of opportunity for HSPA Evolved is
insignificant when compared to 3G LTE.
"If a mobile operator has decided to deploy 3G LTE by 2010/2011, it
should immediately start upgrading its backhaul as each LTE base
station would require a minimum of 200-300Mbps backhaul
capacity," advises Thomas.
Though data traffic is on the rise, revenues are unfortunately flat.

08/03/09 Breakthrough for Post-4G Communications
With much of the mobile world yet to migrate to 3G mobile
communications, let alone 4G, European researchers are already
working on a new technology able to deliver data wirelessly up to
12.5Gb/s.
The technology - known as millimetre (mm)-wave' or microwave
photonics - has commercial applications not just in
telecommunications (access and in-house networks) but also in
instrumentation, radar, security, radio astronomy and other fields.
The mm-wave band is the extremely high frequency part of the radio
spectrum, from 30 to 300 gigahertz (GHz), and it gets it name from
having a wavelength of one to 10mm. Until now, the band has been
largely undeveloped, so the new technology makes available for
exploitation more of the scarce and much-in-demand spectrum.

08/03/09 Breakthrough for Post-4G Communications(2)
One of these, a 60GHz Photonic Wireless System, was
demonstrated at the ICT 2008 exhibition in Lyon and was voted into
the Top Ten Best exhibits. The system allows wireless connectivity
in full high definition (HD) between devices in the home, such as a
set-top box, TV, PC, and mobile devices. It is the first home area
network to demonstrate the speeds necessary for full wireless HD of
up to 3Gb/s.
he system can also be used to provide multi-camera coverage of live
events in HD. "There is no time to compress the signal as the
director needs to see live feed from every camera to decide which
picture to use, and ours is the only technology which can deliver fast
enough data rates to transmit uncompressed HD video/audio
signals," says Sthr.

08/03/09 Breakthrough for Post-4G Communications(3)
The same technology has been demonstrated for access telecom
networks and has delivered world record data rates of up to
12.5Gb/s over short- to medium-range wireless spans, or 1500 times
the speed of upcoming 4G mobile networks.
One way in which the technology can be deployed in the relatively
short term, according to Sthr, is wirelessly supporting very fast
broadband to remote areas. "You can have your fibre in the ground
delivering 10Gb/s but we can deliver this by air to remote areas
where there is no fibre or to bridge gaps in fibre networks," he says.

08/03/09 Cognitive Radio Helps Guarantee Reachability of
Emergency Services
In the event of a disaster, the emergency services have to be able to
trust communication networks implicitly. But what happens if the
network is overloaded or even off the air as a result of the disaster?
Soon it will be possible to borrow free space in other frequency
bands or to organize an ad hoc communication network on the spot
thanks to cognitive radio'. This means that the scarce space
available will be put to better use.
Cognitive radio can identify all transmitting and receiving possibilities
in the vicinity and utilize them to the full.
This does require a totally new approach to the radio spectrum:
instead of the current highly channelled approach, cognitive radio
tries to borrow bandwidth in other bands, without disturbing the
users of these bands.
