Shamong Schools
Seeds For Success
returns for eighth year
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
The Shamong School District
will be bringing back its Seeds
For Success program for the
eighth year this summer.
Seeds For Success is a remedial
program that runs from July 6
through Aug. 6 for identified students in pre-k, kindergarten and
grade one.
These identified students are
recommended by the district as a
result of a screening for incoming students, Curriculum Coordinator Lisa Abramovitz said.
Some outgoing students that are
going into first grade are also recommended by teachers to participate.
Seeds For Success is a fiveweek program held at the Indian
Mills Elementary School.
The students meet four days a
week, so there are a total of 20
sessions that run for about two

A large tree came crashing down on the power lines on Wesickaman Road during the June 23 storm, causing many power outages
throughout the township. The thunderstorms left a wide path of destruction across much of South Jersey.

and a half hours each day from 9
to 11:30 a.m.
During that time, they rotate to
a series of activities, such as a
Fundations Phonics spelling program, a guided reading program,
independent small group readings, computer games, motor
skills games, math practice and
writing.
The district has found that students who participate in Seeds
For Success are more developed
going into the upcoming school
year.
We found that some students
have those foundational skills
and others just need a little extra
help setting that foundation to get
them ready to be part of the classroom, Abramovitz said.
Sherry DuBoff and Kerry
Haines are the two teachers who
will be running the program.
They are both involved with the
Response to Intervention, which
up to a year ago was known as the
basic skills program.
These positions are paid with
the No Child Left Behind Title 1
funds, based on available funding.
In fact, the program is tuition free
for participants because of the
NCLB grant.
The kids come to school better
prepared with a better literacy
foundation, Abramovitz said.
They are given the opportunity
to strengthen particular essential
skills like picking up their letters
and sounds and decoding words.

in our opinion

Happy Fourth of July

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

A quick look at world news a reminder of how fortunate we Americans are

rom all of us at Elauwit Media
to all of our loyal readers, we
wish you the happiest and
healthiest Fourth of July.
As rough as things may be at times
in our country our economy is still
recovering, race is still an issue, and
the Phillies cant seem to win a baseball game anymore things could be a
lot worse for us.
A quick glance at the world around
us reveals just how fortunate we are, as
Americans, to have the freedoms we
do. And lets face it, these freedoms we
often take for granted.
Imagine, for just a moment, what it
must be like to live in Syria.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in Iraq.

Independence Day 2015

We give thanks for all the liberties we
have as Americans. We give thanks for
the sacrifices our miliary continues to
make. We give thanks that we are
American.

Imagine what it must be like to live

in Egypt, where theres still instability
and a lack of confidence in the nations
parliament.
We live in a nation where, despite
our differences, we manage to co-exist
peacefully for the most part.
We live in a nation where our Congress and where the office of the president have functioned and survived for
239 years.
We live in a nation where, for the

most part, were free to do as we please.

This simply isnt the case in many
corners of the world.
Today, we give thanks for the liberties won for us hundreds of years ago.
We give thanks for the many women
and men who have made incredible
sacrifices to protect these freedoms in
battle in Afghanistan and Iraq and
countless other places abroad.
We remember their families who,
like they, have also made sacrifices by
saying goodbye so we can do things as
simple as having a barbecue sometime
this weekend.
Finally, we give thanks for all that
America is and stands for. It may not
be perfect, but a quick glance of the
news shows: life could be much worse.

Shamong students take part in Alter Ego Day

On May 28, the eighth-grade students of
Cathy Campeaus language arts classes
took part in the annual Alter Ego Day.
This event is the culminating activity
for the class, based on their reading and
analysis of the novel, Dr. Jekyll and Mr.
Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.
As Campeau explained, It gives the students the opportunity to step out of their
skin and take on a completely opposite personality; one that they would never readily
adopt.
Additionally,
through
the
years,
Campeau recounted how amazing the project has been, with students approaching it
with creative and sometimes complicated
demonstrations of who they are not.
As part of the project, students are required to dress the part, prepare an introduction of themselves and act out as that
personality for the entire day. Seeing how
students perceive themselves is a fascinating sight.

Propane tank
legislation introduced

RAY OF HOPE FUND

State Sen. Dawn Addiego,

along with Assemblyman Chris J.
Brown and Assemblywoman
Maria Rodriguez-Gregg, have announced the introduction of legislation protecting consumers
from potentially misleading labels on propane tank exchanges.
The bill would require retailers to
display not just the price per
cylinder, but the actual price per
pound for the propane gas itself;
as well as giving the consumer a
receipt that details the total number of pounds or units sold, the
price per pound or unit and the
total sale.
This legislation acts as an important consumer protection it
allows those purchasing propane
to make a more informed decision, said Addiego.
Given the increased use of
canister exchanges in recent
years, my colleagues and I believe
that consumers would benefit
from knowing exactly what
amount of propane they get for
what price, said Brown. While
this is certainly a more convenient way to purchase gas for
grilling, it could also benefit from
some more transparency for the
customer. We have heard the calls

of our constituents to address

this issue and we are moving forward with a common-sense solution.
A great number of propane retailers and vendors have made a
practice of advertising the total
price paid for a cylinder of
propane, as opposed to the price
per unit and the actual total volume, said Rodriguez-Gregg.
This bill would force retailers to
give customers a clearer picture
of what they are getting per dollar, similar to the way gas prices
are advertised for roadside gas
stations.
This is not the first time
propane cylinder exchanges have
been scrutinized for questionable
business practices. Recently, the
two leading propane tank exchange companies were cited for
price fixing and colluding to
lower the amount of propane in
each tank without informing the
consumer.
The practice was kept so secret
that not even Wal-Mart, one of
the largest retailers of propane
tank exchanges, was made aware
of the change. The legislation
would go in to effect six months
after passage.

Were counting on you!
