SEDEX 35 OPEN INNOVATION


CHALLENGE (OIC) RULES &
REGULATIONS FOR PRE-SELECTION
Background
In previous SEDEX, participants who had registered in the OIC category were
allowed to
exhibit their projects without undergoing any pre-selection process. However, in
SEDEX 35, a
pre-selection process will be carried out to select groups with better quality
projects and only
the shortlisted teams will be permitted to exhibit their project during SEDEX
exhibition day.

1. Eligibility
The competition is open to all UTP staffs, foundation and undergraduate
students. Participants shall be responsible for the protection of their own
patent or registration right.

2. Entry
a) Each team shall comprise a maximum of five members or you can participate
individually.
b) One person is only allowed to join ONE OIC team.
c) One OIC team is only allowed to submit ONE project.
d) Each team can have all 5 undergraduate students, foundation students or the
mix of
both.

e) For projects that had been awarded in other exhibitions or events, participants
are
required to submit the evidence to secretariat department and attach the
evidence
with their poster on SEDEX 35 exhibition day.
f) The registration will have to be done online. Please take notice of any updates
and reminders regarding OIC that will be published on SEDEX 35 Facebook page
(https://www.facebook.com/utpsedex?fref=ts).

g) The registration period is from 5th June to 28th June. The deadline for
registration is at 11:59 p.m, 28th June 2015. Any registration after the due date
will not be entertained.
h) Participants must fill in all the necessary details including the OIC Agreement
Form and also submit a poster to be judged. The poster must be submitted
before the
due date, which is at 11:59 p.m, 28th June 2015. Failure in the submission of will
be
resulted in disqualification of entry.
i) The result of pre-selection (whether a team is chosen to exhibit their project on
SEDEX
exhibition day) will be informed within one to two weeks after the closing date.

3. Exclusions
The followings are not acceptable for the exhibition or competition:
a) Inventions, utility innovations or designs which are known to be used by
others or country to public order, morals, public health or welfare.
b) Those that cannot be transformed into tangible embodiments e.g. scientific
principles, abstract theories and works of art, which may be the subject matters
of copyright.
c) Inventions that use living organisms, human/ animal parts or body fluids (for
example, blood, urine). (Exceptions: teeth, hair, nails, dried animal bones).

d) Poisons, drugs, controlled substances, hazardous substances or devices (e.g.


firearms, weapons, and ammunition).
e) Sharp items (e.g. syringes, needles, pipettes, knives) (Exceptions: small
cutter, scissors).
f) Flames or highly flammable display materials.
g) Inventions, Utility Innovations or Designs which had been displayed or
exhibited in any previous SEDEX competitions.
h) Those project whose have been promoted to Engineering Team Project (ETP)
or Final Year Project (FYP) in same semester.

4. Advisor
Each team must have at least one advisor or maximum two advisors. The
advisors can be from different fields. However, this condition is not compulsory.
The advisor may be a professor, lecturer, scientist or researcher in UTP. This
individual must have a solid background in science or engineering knowledge
and should have close contact with the students during the course of the project.
The advisor must review the rules of the SEDEX 35 to make sure that the rules
are understood and abided by the students under his/her supervision. The
advisor is responsible for ensuring the students invention is eligible for entry in
the SEDEX 35. Be reminded that the advisor cannot be the participant of the
project.

5. Judging Criteria
The general criteria for judging are as follows:
a) Novelty and inventiveness
b) Problem solving
c) Scientific thought, engineering goal
d) Poster design, information clarity
e) Contribution of innovation in providing solution to environmental problems,
rural and remote area problems and education/learning process

6. Prizes

a) Teams which are shortlisted to exhibit on SEDEX day will be awarded


certificate of participation on SEDEX exhibition.
b) Teams which are not chosen to exhibit on SEDEX day will be awarded
certificate of participation until pre-selection only.

7. Disclaimer
a) The decision of the judging panel is final. Appeal for recalculation of marks will
not be entertained.
b) Team leader for each participating team must sign the agreement form for
pre-selection and send it to secretariat department.
