IS HOLLY
PUSHING

Friends fear the pregnant star

WORDS: HELEN STUART. PHOTOS: FAME FLYNET, REX

olly Willoughby is
blooming in her third
pregnancy, but friends are
concerned that, behind the
scenes, the This Morning
presenter is pushing herself too far to
pull off being supermum to her two
children Harry, ve, and Belle, three.

Hollys her own worst critic and its no

secret shes struggling more with this
pregnancy than the other two, reveals a
close source. The kids naturally dont
understand this, and shes determined not
to let them down so she keeps on trucking.
But the effort seems to be taking its toll.
And Holly has even confessed shes
turned to yoga to help de-stress. I do yoga
twice a week since being pregnant, she
revealed on This Morning. It helps more
than anything in the world. I like the
selshness that its just for me.
No wonder she likes to take time for
herself, because as well as looking after her
two young children and her This Morning
and Celebrity Juice roles, busy Holly, 33,
has been promoting her bedding range for

always feels better later and puts it down
to her hormones being all over the place.

Family comes rst

Its not the rst time those pregnancy

hormones have got the better of her. On
her 30th birthday in 2011 when she was
pregnant with Belle Holly broke down
in tears when the This Morning team
surprised her with cake live on air, and
she has admitted to suffering from baby
brain in her past two pregnancies.
Luckily, Holly can rely on her husband
of six years, TV producer Dan Baldwin, to
see her through her low days. Holly has a
great job, thriving social life and loving
family, our source says. Dans always told

Holly she works too hard and advised her

to give up some of her commitments. And
as an insider revealed to Woman earlier
this year, Hollys already cut down on her
workload because of Dans warnings. Holly
confessed last year that she gave up her
presenting role on The Voice in order to
spend more time with her family. Its very
important to me to keep my work/life
balance right, she said.
But Holly wont have long to wait before
everything sorts itself out, as shes due to
give birth in the autumn. Its only because
shes normally so chirpy that people have
noticed the impact of this pregnancy, our
insider tells us. When even Holly stops
smiling, you know somethings up!

The oddest thing

ABOUT
ME
T
IS
Shes been the friendly face of
telly since the 1990s, but how
well do we really know Davina
McCall? Chloe Thomas took
some time to investigate

heres something
magnetic about
Davina McCall no
matter how much
she gives, you just
keep wanting more. So imagine
our delight at being invited
into the weird and wonderful
mind of the TV star when she
answered our cheeky set of
questions over a latte.

The strangest thing about me is

Although I seem a clean-living type

as a teetotal mum of three kids, I
do have quite a few tattoos. Ive got
a pair of horns on my hips, so when
Im wearing a bikini it looks like
theres some kind of goat down my
pants, and I have an enormous
alien on my bottom. Ive thought
about removing them, but they
remind me of crazy, carefree times.
The funniest thing my husband
Matthews done recently is

Davinas romantic hubby,

Matthew, throws a great
(private) pool party!
ANMAGAZINE.CO.UK

We were on holiday and we had

a plunge pool in our room at the
back and Matthew did a special
naked dance in the swimming
pool for me that was very funny.
I thought it would be hilarious
to post it online, but in the end
I decided not to!

My biggest weakness is... Im

obsessed with Coke Zero its a

lot nicer than Diet Coke and less
chemically, but its still fizzy. Its
quite boring when you go out if
you dont drink alcohol, but I could
drink gallons of Coke Zero.

I get really nervous... About the

idea of letting people down. In the

months leading up to the Sport
Relief challenge, I was in a state of
high anxiety because I was frightened
of letting so many supporters down.
I worry all the time about living up
to expectations.

My secret hobby is Knitting.

I dont do it enough, but I find it

just puts me in a daze and a nice
headspace where Im not thinking
about anything except my next
stitch. Its very meditative.
The thing that terries me most
is Dying before my children can

fend for themselves. Ive known

women whove been hit by cancer
at an early age and I think thats the
scariest thing to die before they are
old enough to look after themselves.
If I hadnt been a TV presenter
I would have been A midwife,

because I had three amazing births

Woman interview
and I had such an amazing midwife.
She made it all bearable.
My most surprising celebrity friend
is Sophie Raworth. I dont suppose

people would think Id be friends

with a serious newsreader but were
really good mates. Shes also as fit
as a butchers dog she can run like
a gazelle, for hours.
My secret crush is Kit Harington
[from Game Of Thrones]. Hes
absolutely gorgeous.
My guilty pleasure is Country and
western music Ive been a fan ever
since watching the series Nashville.
I used to hate it but the music is very
heartfelt and emotional.
Im a nerdy fan of Game Of Thrones.

I am obsessed. Its also one of the few

shows that Matthew and I watch
together.
The oddest thing about my body is...

My splay feet and double-jointed toes,

which means I can spread them really
wide. Matthew calls me Mutant Feet.
I posted a picture of them on Twitter
and hundreds of people sent me their
pictures of their own mutant feet it
was hilarious.
The most romantic thing Matthew
has ever done He once put a do not

disturb sign on our bedroom door in

a hotel in Manchester when I was up
there working and he left to go home.
I came back and saw the sign on the
door, but when I went in, I realised
that he had only done it so the cleaners
wouldnt come in, because he had
written I love you, so proud on the
bathroom mirror.
I wish I hadnt stopped Learning

the piano. I got to grade six and I play

quite a lot now, but Id be so much
better if I hadnt stopped lessons. Its
a great sadness that I didnt continue.
When I need a special treat, I

Take a trip to London to see my

best friend, Sarah. When Im feeling
low or down, shes the person I turn
to. Best friends come from being
through lifes ups and downs together.
Shes seen me through a lot of bad
times and a lot of good times and vice
versa. Shes my person.

ight long years have passed

since the WAGs came to our
attention at the 2006 World
Cup. They took over the quaint
German spa town of BadenBaden, rampaging through the streets
on spending sprees and lairy nights out,
always accessorised with a designer bag
on their arm and a pair of killer heels. But
this years World Cup will see just one of
the old gang return. With Beckham off
the pitch, and Alex Gerrard apparently
staying at home with the kids, Coleen
Rooney has outlasted all the other
WAGs to accompany Wayne to Rio.
But what happened to the others,
and who is joining her at the
Copacabana this summer?

CHERYL COLE

Girls Aloud star Cheryl was

engaged to Ashley Cole and
cannily befriended Posh for tips
on being a power couple. Of
course, it all ended in tears as
Cheryl de-WAGged from Ashley
in 2010 after his cheating. But
now shes back on top in this

NANCY DELLOLIO

Nancys torrid nine-year relationship

with ex-England manager SvenGran Eriksson was in full bloom
back in 2006, despite his indelities
with Ulrika Jonsson and Faria Alam.
But the pair are not even on friendly

a bitter legal battle over their 3.75

to have two children, Ruby and
Harrison, with him. She still
keeps up her tness training
business, while Joe has been
left out of the England squad and
released by his club West Ham.

TONI TERRY

Teon-coated Toni has stood

by her man through a string of
scandals, not least of which
was his alleged affair with his
teammates girlfriend, Vanessa
Perroncel. John retired from
international football in 2012 so
Toni wont be trekking to Brazil

The course has raised eyebrows,
with many worried this will put

Jenny Oliver, 27, lives

Jenny impresses on her

As Jessica and I sift

through her enormous nail

of our pamper sessions,
you might mistake us for

for a night out.
In fact, shes
my 11-year-old
daughter. And like the girls
signing up for Barbie lessons,
I know shed jump at the
chance to strut her stuff down a catwalk.
But before you act shocked, ask yourself
whats so surprising. Little girls love getting
their hair done, make-up and playing
dress-up and they love pink. It seems
this Barbie experience ticks all the boxes.
Jessica was two when I first gave her
a lipgloss. She loved it, and the older she
got, whether it was fake nails or getting
her hair curled, the more interested in
beauty she became. When she was seven,
I was thrilled when she asked if she could
take part in a pageant.
Now, she dons a sparkly dress and
parades in front of judges once every two
months. And my 10-month-old daughter,
Ella, has been in three pageants already,

(ekenny.co.uk) says:

These classes have sent us

back to the 19th century, when women were
judged not by what talents they had or their
character, but by how good they looked.
When parents send their little girls off on
these holiday experiences, they dont realise
the damage theyre doing the children are
at risk of developing body anxieties as they
grow up, and theyre also more likely to judge
others who dont conform. On top of all this,
Im also hugely concerned about the child
sexualisation children shouldnt be wearing
make-up or thinking about facials, and they
certainly shouldnt be strutting the catwalk.
Holidays like this should be banned.

good is so important and thats something

Ive instilled in Jessica. I tell her all the
time. All you have to do is look at celebrities
to see that you dont get far in life if you
dont pay attention to your appearance.
Now shes hitting puberty, Jessica
is getting spots and her hair gets greasy
as a mum, its my duty to buy her
foundation and teach her how to use it.
Feminist campaigners
will always argue little
girls shouldnt be exposed
to things like the Barbie
classes, but I dont see
anything wrong with them.
Theyre harmless fun, and
if girls dont want to play in
the mud with the boys, why should they
have to? If anything, these classes will be
an education let girls be girls, I say.

Ive always loved clothes, but I dont

Seeing my older sisters outts when she

creating my own style.
Three years ago,
however, on my 39th

about how Id dress as I
headed into my forties. While I wanted to
look right as I got older, I couldnt bear the
phrase age appropriate to me, it
sounded like taking the fun out of fashion.
With my long red hair and quirky outts, I
knew my style wasnt ready to grow up.
Scrolling through websites, the idea
occurred to me that if I set up my own
fashion blog and photographed all my
outts, Id be forced to look at my style
objectively and keep my look fun and chic.
It seemed like the perfect creative outlet
that, in my job as a sales and marketing
manager, I never got to explore. The more I
thought about it, the more excited I became.
I kept the site a secret from my friends
and family for a long time, but I couldnt
wait to tell my husband. Running into the
kitchen one day I announced: Im going to
start a fashion blog! Seeing his bemused

expression, I added and youre

ARE YOU PART

Surrounded by medical staff in

the neonatal intensive care unit

Fragile Finn is cradled by

his father Philip in hospital

THE BABY WHO R

One tiny newborn, five
gruelling operations and
the moving pictures that
reveal an astonishing
battle for survival

xposed to the air by the

surgeons knife, the babys
tiny heart beats vigorously.
The anaesthetist adjusts
a dial and the consultant
cardiac surgeon cuts the aorta so he
can put 10-day-old Finn Jones on to
a heart-lung bypass machine.

Were 50 minutes into a ve-and-ahalf-hour cardiac switch operation to

replumb baby Finns circulatory system.
Finn was born with his body working
as two disconnected circuits: blue blood,
containing very little oxygen, was pumped
around his body but could not reach his
lungs to be reoxygenated, while brilliant
red, oxygen-rich blood owed into and
out of his lungs with no way of reaching
any other organs.
Thirty per cent of untreated babies
with the condition die in the rst week,

18

WOMANMAGAZINE.CO.UK

50% in the rst month, and 90% by the

end of the rst year.
For Finn, a temporary procedure
carried out just hours after his birth
making a hole between the two chambers
has kept him alive until now, but without
this second, intricate operation he will die.
Having a newborn who requires
life-saving surgery is surely one of the
worst nightmares for any parent. Its
a gruelling time, emotionally, nancially
and logistically, and takes a tremendous
toll on your mental health.
Neonatal intensive care units
rarely allow access to anyone other
than immediate family, but I
was given the opportunity to
follow Finns journey at the
Evelina London Childrens
Hospital, from intensive
care through to discharge.
I rst meet Finn and his
parents Kathryn, 32, and
Philip, 31, a few hours after Finns arrival
into the world at 2.30am on 1 October
2013, and shortly before his rst
temporary procedure to tear the hole
between the chambers of his heart. Despite
weighing a healthy 7lb 8oz, Finn has been
put on a ventilator. His waxy pallor contrasts
with Kathryns new-mother glow.

She holds him gingerly, careful not to

dislodge the intravenous lines attached
to his tiny arms and legs via cannulas
held in place with tape. Other lines lead
to beeping monitors that keep track of
his heart rate and oxygen levels, and
a ventilator tube is taped across his cheek.
When I next meet him, he is two days
old and he looks a bit pinker. The initial
temporary x has been a success.
Philip and Kathryn, who are first-time
parents, tell me how they were given the
devastating diagnosis six months into
Kathryns pregnancy. It was like a punch
in the stomach, says Philip.
Kathryn recalls: When they
induced me, it was planned
so that all the best specialists
were waiting outside the door.
Its easy to feel distanced
from the small poorly person
lying in a plastic box, attached
to all those monitors, but
when I fed him late last night, no one was
around bothering us or doing things to him.
I just sat here holding him. It was lovely.
The following week, I arrive in the
unit on the morning of Finns surgery.
Despite the hospitals 97% success rate
with this operation, open-heart surgery
on a newborn is a very big deal.

REFUSED TO DIE
Kathryn and Philip are sitting close
together by Finns cot. Theyve been
crying. No, no, this is a good day,
insists Kathryn, smiling.
From the start of the operation at 1pm to
the nal closing of Finns chest at around
6pm, no one takes a minutes rest. The
quality of concentration in the
operating theatre is beyond
intense, and yet there is also
a bit of chat. The surgeons
are focused yet relaxed.
Afterwards, Finn is wheeled
to paediatric intensive care. In
the corridor outside, Kathryn
and Philip are told that its gone as
expected. They both light up laughing,
clasping hands, zzing with relief and
I sob with joy for the three of them.
But two days later I get a text message
from Philip: Finn is not doing too well.
A day after his heart surgery, Finns blood
pressure suddenly plummeted and
surgeons had to reopen his chest.
They couldnt work out what was wrong,
because his heart was beating beautifully,
Philip tells me. Pumped full of uids and
every available drug in an attempt to boost
his blood pressure, Finn failed to respond
and was within minutes of a decision
being taken to put him back on to bypass.

This would only have bought time its

not a cure and is used only as a last resort.
One of the consultants knelt down next to us,
explaining everything so carefully, Kathryn
says. Theres nothing more, medically, that
we can do for your baby, he told us.
Why Finn deteriorated so disastrously
is still a mystery, but he
pulled back from the brink
and his condition stabilised.
Yet a few days later, just
as he was beginning to
regain his strength, a new
crisis struck. Finn developed
uid on the lung, preventing
him from breathing properly and putting
huge strain on his tiny body. He had to
undergo yet another procedure and face
all the risks associated with it in order
to drain this uid from his lungs.
The procedure was successful, but its
hard to grasp how such a small body could
withstand such trauma over just 10 days.
Finally, after ve weeks in hospital,
Finn was discharged on 5 November,
with as his father says reworks
going off as we drove home.
In early December, I visit Finn at
home. Hes nine weeks old now, six
centimetres longer than when he was
born, and just back up to his birth weight.

NO ONE
TAKES A
MINUTES REST

Sleeping peacefully in his Moses basket,

he looks pink and healthy and I learn hes
just come off all his heart drugs.
Only a deep, livid line on his chest and
another scar across his abdomen bear
testimony to the excruciating emotional
roller coaster his family have endured.
For Kathryn, in particular, it was the
support from Finns intensive care nurses
that made all the difference to her ability
to cope. On the worst day, I said to one
that I was nding it really hard to touch
him, or relate to him at all, she says
quietly. Theyd chilled him to shrink his
blood vessels and boost his blood pressure.
He was grey, all swollen up with uids
he looked dead. His nurse that day
was amazing. She said: He knows the
difference between your touch and
the doctors touch. He can hear you,
and he can smell you and that can
help a baby to recover.
Safe at home, eight months old
and surrounded by love, Finn has
been given back his life by the NHS
staff who cared for him unstintingly.
Thanks to that same intensive care
medical and emotional his parents
also have a very different future from
the one that might have been. And for
that they are forever grateful.

I can remember the exact moment

I realised my life would never be

the deep red scars running up
my legs and thought, Why me?
It was 1998 and just weeks
earlier Id been a happy, carefree
23-year-old, then a horric road
accident threatened everything.
Id been left with two
broken legs, ribs, toes
and a punctured
lung. Most of the
skin on my right leg
was missing.
Determined to
get better, I spent three months
in hospital struggling with
gruelling physiotherapy to
help me walk again, but my
condence had disappeared.
There was no denying I
looked different and even
strangers noticed. For a long

while, I shrank away from stares

and covered my scars with long
sleeves and trousers. My body,
and how battered it looked, was
the rst thing I thought about
when I woke up.
It was only with help from
friends and family that I
realised I couldnt let my scars
dene me anymore. They
werent going away, so Id
better learn to love
them and after all,
they were the reason
I was still here.
Gradually, my face
stopped ushing red
whenever someone
questioned me
on my awkward
limp. I even
rediscovered my
love of fashion.
Now, years on,
when I go on holiday
with my sons Max, 13 and
Woody, seven, I wear what
I want and hold my head high.
Of course, I still get the odd
looks, but I want to show my
boys that it doesnt bother me.
Besides, I love my body, and
thats all that matters.

I know a lot of people

truggle their whole lives
to get to a slinky size 8,

been happier. You see, just over a year ago
I was 17st 8lb, far too big for my 5ft 2in
frame, and did my best to avoid mirrors.
Its hard to pinpoint when my weight
problems started, but at some point after
I got married in my early twenties,
healthy eating stopped being a priority.
At night wed sit on the sofa watching a

I noticed my weight creeping up, but
despite trying every fad diet around, Id
soon get fed up.
By 44, I was a size 20 and on the verge
of developing diabetes. But it wasnt the
health issues that shocked me into doing
something it was a photo on Facebook.
As my wobbly arms and double chin stared
back at me, I fought back tears.
After researching, in February 2013, I
joined a local LighterLife. I swapped my

greasy dinners for food packs and within

a few days I was already feeling less
bloated and, even better, Id lost 2lb. By
November that year Id lost an incredible
7st, making me 10st 8lb.
I suppose I could have kept slimming,
but, a size 12, I felt just right. So, I started
to eat normal, but healthy, meals again.
I might not be a runway model, but these
days, Im more condent than ever.

SAVE YOUR
MARRIAGE?
Dubbed the marriage sabbatical, its the latest self-help
trend in relationships. Here, we investigate whether
absence really does make the heart grow fonder

Dubbed the marriage sabbatical, some

experts are heralding an extended period
apart as a cure-all for relationships in
need of a x. Unlike counselling, which
encourages couples to talk through their
feelings, a marriage sabbatical encourages
you to reect on the things you love about
that person. But do they work?

It took a twoyear separation

to save our marriage

YES

Mink Elliot, 46, lives in London with her

husband Jon, 46, and their two children.

The day my husband told me he was

leaving me was the worst and best day
of my life. Because while our separation
left me bereft and heartbroken, that time
apart helped us to remember what
brought us together in the rst place.
Jon and I were both 34 when we met
and from his broad, beaming smile to his
cockney accent, the attraction was instant.
When we moved in together three
weeks later, Jon would surprise me with
owers and greet me at the front door with

romantic songs. We had our two children

Sammi, now seven, and Maxi, now four. And
after seven years together, we married.
But while our wedding day was
incredible, with hindsight I can see thats
when our problems began. We moved
house and with two young children and no
job or money of my own, I began to feel
isolated. Jon was putting in long hours
and we argued about whose turn it was for
a lie-in to who was more exhausted.
Still, I was stunned when, a decade into
our relationship, one evening in August
2012, Jon blurted out, I think we should
have a trial separation.
He told me hed been miserable and
wanted to move out for a while to give us
both some space. In the weeks that
followed I cried every day. I resented Jon
for tearing our family apart. But I had no
choice but to get on with my life.
Slowly, I began to regain my
independence. I reconnected
with friends, lost weight and
enrolled on a course. But while
I worried our separation would
push us further apart, with the
benet of time and space, I began
to miss Jon. I could see our relationship had
drifted far from where it started.
When, a year after separating, I saw a
family laughing together, my heart ached for
what we used to have. And I found myself
calling Jon to tell him. In that moment, we
both knew we werent ready to let go.
Determined to make our marriage
work, we started couples counselling. And

Happy family:
Jon with Maxi,
Mink and Sammi

WE WERENT
READY TO
LET GO

talking honestly or e s
time, we began to understand
each other again. And two years
after Jon initiated our marriage
break, he put his arms round me
and said,I want us to be a family
again. I was giddy with joy.
Now a couple once again, we owe our
happiness to the time we spent apart. In
the clutter and chaos of family life, we lost
respect for each other. Now we no longer
take one another for granted. Somehow,
weve found our way to a happier, stronger,
more loving place.

Jennie Wright, 54, lives in Kent. She

divorced her husband Phil four years ago.

I was 17 when I met Phil in the bank

where I worked. He wined and dined me
with meals out and trips abroad and when,
a year into our relationship, he asked me
to marry him, I said yes.
In the years that followed we had our
sons Nick, now 26, and Aaron, 20. Working
full-time and travelling around
the country in my job as a sales
manager, life wasnt easy. But we
made it work. Phil would look
after the children when I was
away and Id take on more
when I was home.
Its only with hindsight that
I can see being so busy stopped
me from realising my marriage
wasnt working. Somewhere along the way
our conversations, once peppered with
jokes and laughter, became brief and born
out of necessity. We never argued, but
were quietly drifting apart.
It was July 2008 when, walking
our dogs together, Phil walked a few
paces ahead and we didnt speak
once. I knew then that something
had to change. If he wasnt going to
be the person to say it, then I was.
A week later, I told Phil I was going
to stay with my dad for a while. I
reasoned that some time apart could
help us to recapture what wed lost. He
agreed that it would do us both good.
With every day that passed, I kept
waiting to miss Phil, but the sad truth is,
I didnt. I began to see that the reason
wed stopped talking was because wed
stopped having things in common. Wed

Two weeks into our trial separation, Phil
and I met for a drink, and I told him it was

that it was the right thing to do.
The following month, we started
divorce proceedings.
Perhaps a marriage sabbatical
can repair a relationship, but for

How to make a marriage

sabbatical work for you

Woman agony aunt Suzie Hayman says:

4 Cool off: Use this time to assess what
has, and hasnt, been working. After a
week, ask yourself if youre having a break
with the intention of kick-starting your
marriage, or practising for being apart.
4 Enjoy your own company: Make the
most of this alone time, so that if and
when you do go back to the relationship,
its because you want to be with your
partner not because you need someone
to take out the rubbish.
4 Talk: Agree to go to counselling for a few
sessions because ultimately, the best way
to work through problems is together.

Does your hair

make you look fat?

WORDS: KATIE CORCORAN. PHOTOS: REX AND WIRE IMAGES

Your hairstyle can affect your face shape and body proportions so get the
cut and shape right and you will notice a massive difference...

Add a fringe

Looks good looks even better!

Jennifer Garner has transformed her
square face shape and hard jawline with a subtle wispy fringe
that shortens her face. Totally age defying, this is ideal if you
have long hair and want your face to look rm and lifted.

Start straightening

Try an updo

Go for some graduation

If you have an oval or round face shape

try to avoid square style hairdos that
hang down and do nothing to atter your face. Take a cue from
Amanda Holden and accentuate your features and cheekbones
with a pretty updo that will show off your neckline.

Carol Vorderman looks

younger, fresher and slimmer
with her hair straightened. Waves are great for adding volume
but they also run the risk of widening your cheeks. By keeping
your hair sleek, you naturally lengthen your face shape result!

Beyonc has been

updating her
look a lot recently but we love her stylish, wavy blonde bob.
The sharper angles now chisel her jawline creating a feminine
nish that is far more slimming than her long shaggy cut.

Could you live

with ut

for a month?

Its the latest food to come under scrutiny. But

how much do we really eat? Busy mum Louise
Carpenter challenged her family to go sugar-free

s a mum-of-four, Im not
sure how Im supposed to
feel about sugar. If I believe
the anti-sugar lobby, its
the new tobacco. Sugar
rather than fat, the argument goes, is
responsible for rising levels of obesity.
The more sugar you eat or drink, the
more the body stores it as fat.

To try to make sense of it all, I go cold

turkey for 30 days, dragging my family
along for the ride. Being the kind of
person who steams my childrens
vegetables while allowing them a sticky
bun at the weekend, I am a good guinea
pig. But how much hidden sugar is
really in our diet?

TOTAL CHAOS

THE NHS

LIMITING OURSELVES

A DAY

Heres what goes in the bin:

Yogurts, baked beans, tomato
sauce, pasta sauce and the
childrens Saturday evening
treat pizzas. Also on the
way out are jam, honey and
anything, frankly, that kids
think tastes nice.
Where Im confused is on the
issue of fruit, which is laden with sugar
(fructose). Smoothies and fruit juices, if
you believe some research, are as bad as
cola. But should I get rid of fruit in my
childrens lunchboxes?
I decide that the fruit stays for the kids,
but no fruit for me. And I supplement their
bananas with kiwis and lower-fructose fruit
such as berries, and switch to raw vegetables
such as peppers and sugar snaps. Brown
pasta and granary bread also stay Im not
prepared to experiment with my children
in the way I can with myself.
As for me, the diet is a drastic change,
not from cutting out sweet stuff but from
eating no carbohydrates at all. By day two,

children at 8.30pm. The

running I started a few months
ago is off the cards. I feel cross.
I seem to be living on boiled eggs,
almonds, avocado and kale. At a health
food shop, I spend more than 40 on chia
seeds, quinoa, axseed, hazelnuts and
coconut water. Im like a crazed celebrity.
Breakfast is my main problem. Its all
very well for Hollywood stars to whip up
smoothies of avocado, kale and blueberries
but you try doing that without a housekeeper
when youve got four kids, a job and
lunchboxes to pack. Determined to make
said smoothie, but not owning a smoothie
maker, I throw the ingredients into the

Life today
The next day, my son gives me a
shortbread heart biscuit covered in pink
icing that he has made at playgroup. I eat
it in an instant because it was made and
given with such love. Its delicious. What
could matter more than this?

YOURE GOING TO
START FEELING A LOT
BETTER VERY SOON WEEK THREE:
POISONED BY PROSECCO

Two people tell me I look fresh. I havent

been fresh in years. The children seem
to have forgotten about cereal and fruit
juice. We make our own pizza on Saturday
night. Working mostly from home means
Im around at teatime, making it easier to
control and plan the menu.
With a history of mild dieting, Im
resisting the urge to get on the scales.
This isnt about being on a diet. The magic
formula seems to be to ll up on good fats
and proteins to stabilise my blood sugar.
So I continue to eat and snack on mostly
good fats: nuts, avocado and a bit of
cheese. I relax about bacon too. After three
decades of anti-fat programming, this feels
like Im breaking some kind of diet law.
The bad news is, the week closes with
a spectacular display of bad behaviour.
During a dinner party, I knock back a lot
of Prosecco, red wine and potato gratin. At
the end of the evening, I throw up in our
bathroom. Classy. This has to be the sugar
since Ive drunk more before and not been
such a wreck. I feel poisoned.

food processor. It explodes over the top and

on to the oor. The dog laps it up and is
promptly sick. The little one is banging his
spoon on the table singing at the top of his
voice, No no no sugar, never never never!

WEEK TWO:
THE HUSBAND REBELS

I make a string of rather joyless suppers with

quinoa, various leaves and smoked salmon.
The husband confesses that one day he is
so starving he eats two hot lunches at work.
Im a sad woman in the supermarket,
squinting at the carbohydrates (of which
sugars) labels. I realise that a signicant
amount of my previous sugar intake came
from bread, rice and white wine. When

I reintroduce a fruit yogurt to my son as an

experiment, he goes nuts with the sugar rush.
This weeks progress is shaped by a visit
to Dr John Briffa, author of the weight loss
guide Escape The Diet Trap, who makes
sense of these subtle changes in my life.
The low energy is my body recalibrating its
metabolism, switching its system of fuel from
carbs to fats and proteins. Eat fats to fill up,
he says. Hang in there, he advises. Youre
going to start feeling a lot better very soon.
I want him to tell me what to feed my
kids. Look, he says, if you have normal
kids who exercise, with no weight problems
and no history of diabetes, a rule of thumb
would be that natural sugars from fruits
are OK. But if you brought an obese kid in
here, I would be telling you to take the
fruit out the lunchbox.

WEEK FOUR:
WHO KNEW I DONT
LIKE CHOCOLATE?

I go running four times! A miracle given

how I felt in week one. But as the week draws
to a close, I feel like a convict waiting by
the prison gates. On day 31, I go downstairs
and nd a box of Belgian chocolates. I taste
one. I dont even like it. Only Gwyneth
Paltrow could be more annoying than that.
Two weeks after my 30-day diet ends,
I continue to eat in the same way. I thought
Id be liberated, but my palate has been
retrained. I nd bread heavy now. I dont
want rice or chocolate biscuits or pasta.
Proteins fills me up and keeps me going.
Im certainly not going to be a militant
anti-sugar mother. The kids continue to
have treats on Saturdays, but Im more
conscious of how much theyre having.
This diet has, ultimately, made me sugaraware rather than permanently sugar-free.
And only now can I say it: if I carry on, Ill
drop a jeans size too, although for the first
time in my life, thats really not the point.

How much protection is needed?

Can you advise me on an SPF

important for children and adults, so
you all need to be wearing at least

HIS BED-WETTING
IS CAUSING UPSET

My nine-year-old still wets the

bed from time to time. Weve
tried cutting down drinks at
bedtime, but its not helped and hes
getting really worried about going
on school trips. What should I do?

DR ELLIE CANNON REGRETS SHE CANNOT ANSWER LETTERS PERSONALLY.

WORDS: KIRA AGASS. PHOTOS: ALAMY, ISTOCKPHOTO.COM

Wetting the bed is actually very

common. Even at 10, one in 20
children are still doing it. First
off, nd out if your son is constipated.
That causes a lot of bed-wetting, and
is easy to correct with dietary changes
and medicine. Diabetes can also be a
cause, so your doctor must check for
this. If neither are to blame, ask about
medication to reduce the amount of
urine overnight. If not for long-term,
your son can use it for school trips.
Bed-wetting alarms can wake your
child up if they are wet, and train the
brain to wake up with a full bladder.

trying all-in-one UV protection swimsuits,
which are widely available. They can
provide SPF50 without the hassle of cream
although you will have to apply to their
face and hands. Hats are advisable, and
avoid the sun between 11am-3pm. Its a
mistake to assume that because you tan you
dont need protection everyone is at risk.

Could my
symptoms be
signs of cancer?
Recently, Ive noticed things are
a bit different when I go to the toilet.
I was always very regular before, but
now everything is a lot slower. Could this
be a sign of something serious? Im 52
and cancer runs in my family.

More often than not changes in bowel

habit are simply a result of changes in
your diet, drinking and even stress.
However, any change in your bowel habit
is a reason to go to the doctor. In someone
over the age of 50 it can be a sign of bowel
cancer and it is one of the cancers that
can run in families. Symptoms include
abdominal pain, blood in the toilet,
diarrhoea or constipation. It can also
cause the feeling that you have not
nished emptying your bowels. See your
GP as soon as you can for an examination,
which may include a rectal inspection as
well as blood tests and possibly even a

IS DITCHING CARBS
THE RIGHT WAY TO
LOSE WEIGHT?

I need to lose 2st and want to

do it sensibly and healthily.
But theres so much dietary
advice around and Ive read a lot
about going carb-free. Is it a good
idea to ditch the carbs completely
and even cut out sugar, too?

Theres no point trying a

low-carb diet if bread, rice and
pasta are the main foods in
your house and your daily meals
its too big a change. On top of that,
while the calories from sugar are far
more easily turned into body fat
that any other calorie, its not
realistic to cut it out if you love your
sweet treats. To lose weight and
keep it off you have to adopt a plan
that cuts down your calorie intake
and increases your movement level.
I have patients who have lost
much more weight than you need
to, simply by not eating treats and
walking to a bus stop thats a bit
further away than their usual one. A
diet doesnt have to be complicated
or expensive to be successful it
just has to be realistic and t in with
your life. Try cutting down on carbs,
and increasing green vegetables in
your meals, as well as cutting out
treats. See your GP for nutrition
advice if you need more support, too.

nutritionist Rania Batayneh,
is all about. To lose weight,
you can eat the foods you
love, but every meal or a snack must
consist of one protein, one carbohydrate
and one fat. It really is that simple.

Proteins, carbohydrates, fat: theyre

the perfect trio, with thousands of different
combinations, explains Rania. What
makes this diet realistic is that theres
no need to deprive yourself. Its
very liberating not to have to
worry about what foods you
can or cant eat, says Rania.
Wanting to get healthy and
lose weight shouldnt feel
like a punishment. This diet
is not about vanity, its a
return to sanity.
The 1:1:1 formula is as effective as it is
simple. Eating all three macronutrients
(protein, carbohydrates and fat) together
rebalances your blood sugar, decreases
cravings and makes you feel full. If you

How can I support

my colleague?
ne of my colleagues recently lost
her mum and she is devastated.
Shes been told by a friend that she
should go and see a medium to help
her get in touch with her mum, deal
with her grief and move on. I dont
believe in all that, but I dont want
to seem unsupportive or unhelpful.
What should I do?

SUZIE REGRETS SHE CANNOT ANSWER QUESTIONS PERSONALLY

Suzie says:
You can be supportive and helpful
by urging her to talk to experts in
bereavement, such as Cruse
(crusebereavementcare.org.uk).
When we lose someone, its normal
to go through various stages of grief
we all experience disbelief or denial,
anger, bargaining, depression and
nally we come to acceptance. We
can experience these stages in any
order and get stuck in or even return
to some. And in any one of the earlier
stages, we can be vulnerable to people
who offer us a quick fix, reassurance
or explanation. Your colleagues
friend may well think a medium can
help her, but grief is a hard thing to
tackle and, in my experience, there
is no easy solution. But at least with
bereavement counselling, she is less
likely to be left out of pocket, still
grieving and further confused.

have many friends to look after him.

How will he manage on his own?

Suzie says:
Its always hard when children leave home.
Empty nest syndrome is a painful reality
and when they go off to university or
travelling we can feel bereft and redundant.
As long as they are still students, we might
hold off those feelings, hoping they may
still come back and rely on us once more.
But when they go for good, many parents
search for any excuse to reel them back
in. I understand that you want to look
after him and care for him but its time to
recognise that hes not a child any more.
Young people tend to want to come back
to see you when you let them go. Cling on
too much and they will struggle to escape
and may take extreme measures to put
themselves beyond your reach. Im sure
hes more than capable of looking after
himself. In six months, hell have made
plenty of friends to keep him company,
maybe even a partner he hasnt told you
about. It might be hard to hear, but he
doesnt need you in the same way as he
used to. Give him respect as an adult
rather than treating him like a little boy.

I cant stand my stepmum

ince my dad died a few months

ago, Ive been struggling to
cope with his wife my stepmum. He
left my mum for this woman when
I was 10 and, behind my dads back,
shes been horrible to my brother
and me for as long as weve known
her. My mum knew how she treated
us but never said anything to my dad.
Now Dads passed away, she still
expects us to be dutiful to this woman,
but Id rather cut off all contact.

Suzie says:
Becoming a stepparent can be like
entering a mineeld. If I were being
kind and understanding, I could
point out that she might have felt
uncertainty and jealousy about your
presence in his life. But I become
less forgiving when someones lack
of confidence results in children
being made to feel miserable. Id
give her one chance. Tell her how
miserable she made you and your
brother when you were growing up
and explain how hard it is for you
to forgive her. If she apologises

My husband is such a bully

y husband and I have been married
for 25 years and, since our rst year
together, I dont think Ive had one happy
moment with him. For the past year, hes
been seeing a friend of mine he denies
it, but I know its true. Last week, he came
home late and started having a go at me,
as he often does, in front of my daughter
and her husband. They were so shocked,
they insisted I go and stay with them for
the weekend. When I returned, my
husband was lovely to me. But now my
daughter is telling me I should leave him.

Suzie says:
People can change, and finally having
someone stand up to him could well have

made your husband rethink his behaviour

and start to value you again. But Im
inclined to agree with your daughter.
Unless hes really prepared to change for
good, why waste another 25 years with
this man when you could be happier
without him? I suggest you see a solicitor
most offer a short establishing interview
for free to nd out your options. With
the support of your loving family, a new
start could be the best choice.

THIS WEEK:

CAN GUM DISEASE AFFECT YOUR HEART?

THE DOCTOR

he notion that
um disease is
ssociated with
eart disease has
een around for a
while. There is a growing body of
science to show that if you have
good oral hygiene and good gums,
youre less likely to have heart
disease. While those who dont

look after their mouth, gums and

teeth tend to be the same people
who get heart disease, its unclear
whether gum disease causes heart
disease like, for example, smoking
does. It may simply be that healthy
people who avoid heart risks like
smoking, obesity and unhealthy
diets are also the people who take
their oral hygiene seriously.

THE NUTRITIONIST

Sarah West is a freelance

nutritionist

ood nutrition is essential for cardiovascular health and for

eveloping and maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Low
evels of calcium, vitamin D and antioxidant vitamins A, C and
have been associated with an increased risk of gum disease,
o a nutrient-dense diet should be an essential part of your
oral hygiene routine. Excessive sugar consumption has been linked to
higher levels of the bacteria associated with tooth decay and gum disease so,
as well as increasing your intake of lean protein, wholegrain carbohydrates,
brightly coloured fruits and vegetables, and low-fat dairy products, try to
cut back on the rened sugars found in sweets, cakes, and processed foods.

WHY USE COLGATE TOTAL?

THE DENTIST

Dr Anousheh Alavi is a dental surgeon

here is a growing body of

isease with a number of
onditions including heart

yet clear, even allowing for risk factors such
as being overweight and smoking, those with
gum disease had a higher risk of heart disease.

because if you do something about it early

on, they can heal very well. The key is to
remove bacteria from hard to reach areas
around the gumline. Do it twice a day, one
being last thing at night, with an effective
antibacterial toothpaste. All of us brush
some parts of our mouth better than other
parts, so make sure you dont miss out any
areas. Flossing or using interdental brushes
as often as possible is very helpful, too.

Colgate Total Advanced offers complete

protection for a healthy mouth and
guards against the main oral care

non-stop, 12-hour protection against
bacteria, its the number one toothpaste
brand used by dentists.*

sizzling temperatures, latte-coloured
sands and glittering, sapphire seas
you might expect in Italy or Greece.

A 20-minute catamaran trip across the

Solent brought me to this idyll, which has
a reputation as one of the UKs sunniest
spots, and so I was fast-tracked to fun.

Getting away from it all

Where
in the world?
I couldnt resist heading straight
for Ventnor, a suntrap on the south
of the island, which enjoys its own
balmy microclimate. Tumbling
scenery and Victorian villas creeping
up the hillside immediately brought
Italys Sorrento to mind, but a wander
among spiky palms and colourful
subtropical plants of Ventnors
magnicent Botanic Garden
(botanic.co.uk) transported me
even further aeld, to South Africa,
New Zealand and the Orient.

Secrets
of the sand
Making the short walk coastward
to Steephill Cove, I came across this
magical haven, only accessible on
foot. It became my favourite beach
of the trip and is especially popular
among seafood lovers for the fresh
catch served on the terrace of The
Crab Shed in summer. Families may
prefer the long, open sandy beaches
of the north-east with their shallow,
crystal-clear waters for paddling
and swimming. Appley Beach, just
a short walk from the ferry port at
Ryde, also boasts the wonderful
Three Buoys (threebuoys.co.uk),
a chic restaurant. Ask anyone to
name the best place to eat
on the island, however, and
theyll tell you to try The
Hambrough in Ventnor.
The food is sublime (45
for three courses see
thehambrough.com).
Sipping a Singapore sling
in the bar and eating in the
intimate candlelit dining
room where turquoise sea
views ll the windows was
an experience I felt sure even
Ventnors Botanic Gardens
the Med couldnt match.

Spanish invasion (see www.englishheritage.org.uk for more details).

Wild west

Unspoiled countryside awaits on

the west side, where those seeking
an active, outdoorsy holiday often
head. I took an invigorating walk
along Tennyson Down, the islands
most popular walking route, which
passes the multicoloured sands of
Alum Bay. As the island is a boating
and a bicycling hotspot I decided to
try both here in west Wight. I hopped
on a 20-minute boat cruise around
the dramatic Needles rocks and
lighthouse (adults, 5.50, children,
3.50 www.needlespleasurecruises.
co.uk). Then I joined friendly cyclist
John, of Wight Cycle Hire in
Yarmouth, for a guided tour of
seaside trails from the saddle (halfday bike hire 10 for adults, 8 for
children wightcyclehire.co.uk).

Where
to stay
I stayed in one of the only two guest
bedrooms in the vast, ve-star
Arreton Manor, once owned by
Henry VIII (from 115 per night
arretonmanor.co.uk). I enjoyed very
attentive service from host Julia and
knockout breakfasts. Between June
and September guests can also stay
in a yurt and log cabin in the elegant
grounds (80 per night, self-catering).
Rosemary Cottage in the beautifully
unspoilt countryside of Newchurch
offers pure relaxation too (double
rooms from 75 per night see
rosemarycottagebreaks.co.uk).

Historic hideaway

The Isle of Wight has long been

a fashionable holiday destination for
the great and the good, from Charles
Dickens to Queen Victoria. In fact,
I spent one blissful afternoon dipping
my toes in the sea at Osborne House,
Queen Victorias private beach and
holiday home, now open to the public.
But as opulent and impressive as
that is, it doesnt beat Carisbrooke

NFC stands for Near Field Communication and is a wireless

way to connect all your gizmos. Its similar to Bluetooth but
is faster and easier to set up. For example, you can play
music from your phone on a nearby speaker with no wire
attached, just by tapping one device on to the other to link
them. Currently its only available on certain phone models,
including HTC One M8 and Samsung S5, but not the iPhone.
Phone and credit card companies are using NFC to develop

You dont have to

spend a lot to hit the

JACKPOT!
With tickets starting at just 1p, you
could be a winner with a few pence

I SPENT 60P AND WON 1,924

A couple of years ago, I was
flicking through a copy of Woman
when I started reading a Woman
Bingo winners story, just like
this. I still remember seeing that
the lady who was featured won
2,500 after buying just a few 10p
tickets. Id never played bingo
before, but was so intrigued that
I decided to take a look myself
and now its me in the magazine!
I really enjoy
playing the bingo
games. Its great
fun to watch as
your numbers
get marked off,
especially if youre
getting close to a
Full House, and its really
exciting when your ticket is
ashing and youre waiting
for just one more number to
be revealed! Its nice to have
some me-time while my
husband Patrick, 62, is at work.
I always play in the Tiki and
Emerald Value Bingo rooms.
Tickets are priced from just 1p.
Throughout the day, theres also

free bingo games,

which are such good
fun to play too.
My run of wonderful
luck began on a wet
Friday. Patrick had
gone to bed early, so
I thought Id play a
couple of games.
I bought a few 2p and
5p tickets for Tiki
Bingo. Then I noticed
that the next game
was a 10p link with a
1,500
top prize. So
I bought six
10p tickets.
I wasnt paying
much attention at
that point as I was
reading messages in
the chat stream, but then my
card started ashing to say I only
needed one number to win the
two-line prize of 424. Just then,
my number was called. Id won!
My heart was still racing when
my card began ashing again to
say I only needed one more
number for the Full House of
1,500. Then that came up too!
I ew upstairs to tell Patrick

ITS NICE TO
HAVE SOME
ME-TIME

WOMAN BINGO IS THE BEST

Ive joined a couple of other bingo sites to see what theyre

like, but they just dont compare. The layout on Woman
Bingo is so much nicer, brighter and more fun. Plus its
really easy to play and to withdraw your winnings. I love
the whole feel of it. Its just great.

the good news. He sat up,

rubbing his eyes. Its not real
money, though, is it? he asked.
Of course it is! I replied.
Ive just won 1,924! We went
downstairs to celebrate. But
my luck didnt end there a
week later I shared a Full House
in the Emerald Bingo room
and took home 140, then in
February I won a 50 Full
House on a free bingo game,
taking my total prize money for
the year to over 2,100.
My big win came at the right
time, too. Our roof started
leaking, so it was nice to know
we had some money in the bank.
Now were planning a holiday
to Italy. I havent been since
I was a teenager and Ive always
wanted to go back. Now,
thanks to Woman Bingo, I can.
Im still amazed that Ive
won I never thought it could
happen to me!

I had a busy day

ahead. I was taking
my dad to a hospital
appointment,
and my sons
Stephen and John
shopping. But
there was a promotion
called Value Mondays on
Woman Bingo, offering 2p
tickets for linked bingo
rooms, and I didnt want to
miss out. So before I left,
I pre-bought tickets for a
few Sapphire Bingo games.
When I got home at 6pm,
I switched on my laptop to

its no surprise that
ITV daytime show
Loose Women
is going through a troubled

even calling for the channel to
get rid of the programme.

WORDS: HELEN STUART. PHOTOS: EROTEME,

FEATURE FLASH, REX, SPLASH NEWS, WENN

After a raft of changes,

including the departure of old
favourites and a focus on newsy
debate, it seems the show has
nally found its feet again.
But now, as revealed exclusively
to Woman, one of the new faces,
Myleene Klass, has seemingly
stuck the knife into the shows
previous incarnation and the
ever-so-slightly-older loose ladies
behind it confessing that she
found the show too ranty before
she joined.
And on the other side of the
fence, theres Carol McGifn
slamming the recent changes to
the show, accusing it of being too
goody-goody.
Ooh-er. Theres a big battle
brewing between the two camps,
but whose side are you on?

64

CAROL MCGIFFIN

Carol claimed she can no longer

recognise Loose Women as the show
she appeared on for 10 years and
accused it of becoming too mumsy. Carol
commented when she quit the panel
last summer, Ive plundered my private
life and exhausted my repertoire of
anecdotes to the point of boring myself.

WOMANMAGAZINE.CO.UK

DENISE WELCH

There were many reasons

for me leaving, confessed
Denise in October 2013.
Every show needs a shakeup, but I felt my wings had
been clipped. The fun of the
show is what made it for me,
and I feel the way its going
is losing the fun of it.

OLD
LISA MAXWELL

Loose Women is not

as much fun as it was,
says Lisa. It used to be
about a group of women
who all know each other
really well and have
lots of chemistry. Its
become more serious
and less personal. I miss
the laughs and I miss the
show coming from the
heart. Now its just
about giving political
opinions.

Planet celebrity

RUTH LANGSFORD

The panel might change

but the essence of the
show feels the same
sitting around the table
with your girlfriends over
a cup of tea and putting
the world to rights! says
the 54-year-old presenter.
You might not always
agree but you have a
good discussion and you
never fall out over it.

JAMELIA

I denitely think its

changed for the better,
says Jamelia. Its
important the panellists
are strong women who
arent easily swayed by
another persons
opinion.

MYLEENE KLASS

It was all getting a bit

post-menopausal and
ranty, 36-year-old
Myleene tells us. Women
shouldnt be represented
like that. I think its really
nice now that the panel
can talk about everything
from politics to designers.
We have a good giggle
and I love it.

Vs NEW
WHAT DO YOU THINK?

We asked if you liked the new team

Julie Johnson: Havent watched it for
a year now they whinge too much.
Rhona Brook: I miss the old gang and
hope Jane McDonald comes back.
Lisa Brown: Coleen was my favourite
but I cant stand any of them now.
Zyta Fleur: The new faces are great.
Margaret Carrick: Its nine months since
I watched it and I dont miss it!

HAVE YOUR SAY

KAYE ADAMS

I dont see change

as a negative, says
returning panellist
Kaye. If we didnt
refresh the panel, we
would be failing our
audience. Our show
must reect life!

ANDREA MCLEAN

I love all the changes,

Andrea told Woman.

Its all Goode!

Matthew Goodes star is on the rise.

After starring in Woody Allens Match
Point in 2004, the debonair actor did
A Single Man with Colin Firth and the
BBCs Christmas mini-series Death
Comes To Pemberley. Next, he plays an
aristocrat in the lm Belle. Matthew,
36, lives in Kent with partner Sophie
Dymoke and their ve-year-old Matilda.

Im not posh, not in the slightest. My

parents spent money on my education,

but I wasnt spoilt. My dad worked as a
geologist and my mum was a nurse, who
also directed amateur theatrics.
Im always pretty tense about
everything when it comes to work.

Im nervous all the time! I get nervous

about people you wouldnt think youd
get nervous about meeting, even Steve
Wright, as hes one of my favourite DJs.
The difference between going as an
18-year-old to drama school and going
as a 21-year-old is vast. Thats only from

my experience, but I really came out

of my shell and learnt a lot about life at
university. I met a lot of my great friends
there. I think if Id made it
as a child star, I could have
become a nightmare!

I live in the middle of

deepest, darkest Kent.

No one in my village even

knows who I am. I dont

that level. Otherwise Id work more.
