PURPOSE : TO COMPLETE A SAFETY ASSESSMENT OF SCHOOL FACILITIES

ASSIGNMENT 3
My school is SK KG Sawah and it is located in a rural area of Pontian, Johor Darul
Takzim. Because of its enrollment of only around 300 pupils, this school does not
have top class facilities for sports events as in schools with much higher pupils
enrollment and schools located in big cities. Therefore the school's constituents only
uses whatever facilities the school already have for all sorts of sports event. Below
are the facilities that we have and my assessment of its safety issues.
No

Facilities

Safety Issues

School
Field

1. The school field was originally a hill and its soil is made of
hard ground. Therefore we need to be extra careful when
conducting a physical education class or any activities on the
field. The hard ground with less grass does not have the
absorbing capabilities on impact of normal training ground with
grass, making it very painful to fall on the field.
2. The school had an agreement with one of the internet service
provider which was the YESS Company and they build their
transmission tower at one corner of the field. in the process of
building the tower, they brought in heavy machine and vehicle
thus further damaging the already not so good condition field.
The machine and vehicles left behind many holes and made the
field surface become more uneven, therefore pupils need to
watch for their steps every time they run or even walk on the
field.
Event situation:The school field is used largely in any sports event conducted
by our school such as the Netball, Handball, and Soccer
training, 1 Student 1 Sport activities during the co-curricular
and even when our school is the host of Zonal and district
sports event. Every time we are hosting any event, we have to
make sure to cover the hole or the uneven ground with sand.
We also need to make sure that our medical person will always
be on standby near the field for fast action.

High Jump 1. The equipment were old and not in superb condition. The
equipment pole's base already damaged thus making the pole cannot be
positioned straight.

2. The high jump mattresses are not considered standard for

the event itself. our school got 3 mattresses. 2 of them already
beyond their limit as the thickness itself were only around 5 cm.
The other mattress thickness is around 15 cm. The thickness
themselves does not qualified for the simplest form of high
jump which is the scissor jump which need minimum of 20cm
for safe landing. That's why we never train our school athletes
for flop style as it need at least 40cm minimum of landing
mattress to be considered safe.
Event Situation
When we are hosting high jump competition for the school
sports day or even train the high jump athletes for the zonal
event, we need to make sure of certain things first. The
technique that can only be apply to our mattresses is the
scissor jump. For safe landing, we need to stack up the
mattresses so it can be 15cm + 5cm = 20cm which is the
minimal mattress high for this technique. The flop jump must
not even be considered to be executed with our equipment.
