Step1:Gettingstufftobuildspudgun(potatogun)
Thismaterialslististobuildaverysimplestartermodelpotatolauncher,
withtheintenttogetthemostbangfromyourbuck(sotospeak).Byno
meansisthistheonlywaytobuildalauncher,ornearlythecoolest,butstill
abletoprovidehoursoffun.Also,makesuretoobtainpressureratedparts
forbuildingyourspudgun.WedonotrecommendABSorcellularcoretype
pipeandfittings,thesearenotpressureratedandunsafe.
MATERIALS:
Obtainthefollowingitems:
1.12"of4"SCH40PVCPressureRatedwaterpipe(chamberbody)
2.48"of2"SCH40PVCPressureRatedwaterpipe(barrelstock)
3.4"PVCcoupler
4.4"x2"PVCbushing(ifnotavailablecombinetwo,like4x3and3x2)
5.4"PVCFPTadapter(cleanoutadapter)
6.4"PVCMPTthreadedplug
7.PVCprimer,onewithdyeinitifpossible(purple,blue)

Step2:Preparingthematerialsforassembly
Tomakesureeverythinggoestogetherproperlyandsmoothly,proper
conditioningandsizingofthematerialsisnecessary.Payparticular
attentiontotheshapingofthepipeends,asthisisamajorfactorinproper
solventweldingwiththefittings.
PVCPIPESIZING
Cutthetwopipestosize,4diacut12lengthand2dia.Cut48length
withthesawunlessyoualreadydidsointhestore.Usingthefile,takeoff
thesharpcornersontheinsideANDoutsideofthepipe.Radiusingthe
insidehelpsreducetheamountofpotatoscudthatcanbuildupinthe
launcher,andbreakingtheoutsidecornerensurespropersolventwelding,
ifthisisnotdoneleakpathsmayresult.Cutendsshouldbeassquareas
possible.Tooneendofthe11/2"pipeitissuggestedthattheinsidebe
chamferedabout0.020"andtheoutsidefiledorturneddowntoalmost
meettheinnerchamfer,creatingabluntknifetohelpsizethepotato.
PVCFITTINGS
Inspectthefittingforreallybadweldlinesorpossiblelargedislocationsthat
mayresultinprematurefailure.Removeallpapertagsorlabelsbypeeling,
scraping,evenusingabitofprimertocleanoffthelastadhesive.Fileoff
anysharpspursthatmayhamperyourabilitytogripthefittingsfirmlywhen
assembling.

Step3:Assemblingthespudgunlauncher
IChamberAssembly:
Primebothendsofthe4"pipe,alsoprimingthe4"bushing,both4"coupler
sockets,and4"slipfitfemaleadapter.DONOTgetanyprimeronthe
adapterthreads!Immediatelyapplypipecementtothethreeprimed4"
fittings,thenLIBERALLYtobothendsofthe4"pipe.Startboththecoupler
andadapterfittingsonthepipe,startthebushinginthecoupler,thenright
theassemblywiththethreadsup,pressingittogetherwithbodyweight
whiletwistingabout1/2turn.Holdthispositionforatleast30seconds.The
pipeendsshouldbottomeachabout11/2"insidethefittingsocket.Ifthey
bothdonotbottom,eitherapplymoreforceIMMEDIATELYsomehowto
getitto,oryouarescrewedandhavetothrowitoutstartoverwiththat.If
thefittingsandpipeareproperlyconditionedthisshouldnotbeaproblem.
Wipeupanyspilledgluewiththerag,butleaveagoodbeadattheexternal
pipe/fittingsline.Ifanygluegotonthethreadsgetitoutofthereasfastas
possible!Anyglueonyourhandsshouldjustbelefttodryandthenpeelit
off.Usingsolventtoremoveitwilljustincreaseyourexposuretoit.

Primeoneendofthebarrelandthe2"socketonthebushing.Ifoneendof
thebarrelwaschamferedtoaknife,primethesquare'regular'endofthe
pipe.Applyglue,liberallytothepipe,andpresstogether,againusinga1/4
turnmotiontobottom.Holdfor30+seconds.Afterreleasingplacetheunit
uprightforseveralminutes,toletthegluesetalittlemore.Solventwelding
ismoreofacuringthanadryingprocess.Solventislost,hencetheterm
drying,buttheactionofthesolventeffectivelycuresallthoseindividual
plasticpartsintoonecontinuousphysicallyjoinedpieceofplastic.Properly
done,solventweldsarealwaysstrongerthanbulkpipe.
ATTHISPOINTANDFORSAFETYPLEASEWAITATLEAST24HOURS
FORTHEGLUETOFULLYCUREANDSOLVENTTODISSIPATE.
Ifyouareplanningtopaintyourspudguncannon,nowisagoodtime
IIIinstallingtheelectrodes
TheSIK20kitincludes2electrodeassembliessizedtobeusedwherethe
couplingfitsoverthepipe.Theoverlapofpipeandcouplingis2andwe
recommendcenteringtheelectrodeswithintheoverlaparea,180degrees
opposing.Onceyouhavetheelectrodecentersmarkedyouwillneedto
drill#189holescenteredonthemarksandexactlyopposingeachother.
Atthispointthetipsshouldbetouching.(Oncetheterminalsareattached
andjamnutstightenedthewellnutswillexpandandelectrodegapwill
increaseSeesectionV)

IVHandleAssembly
Pushthehandleendsonthealuminumtubeuntilitsseatstothebottom.
ConnectthemodularinterfacefromtheMRS201ringsetandthehandle
assemblyusingthe4#18820x5/8socketcapbolts.Checkthe
alignmentonaflatsurface.Placetheringarchesonthebarrelnearwhere
thebarrelandchambermeet.Attachwithsmoothtopringsand(4)
#18820x7/8Socketcapscrewsandsquarenuts
TAKETURNSTIGHTENINGBOTHSIDESSOTHEOPPOSINGCLAMPS
HAVEEQUALSPACNGBETWEENTHEM.PLEASEDONOT
OVERTIGHTEN.OVERTIGHTENINGCANFRACTURETHEPVC.
TIGHTENINGWITHTHESMALLSIDEOFTHEALLENWRENCHWILL
PROVIDEADUEQATETORQUE.

VIgniter/lead/electrodeconnection
Inserttheelectrodeassemblythroughpreviouslydrilled#189holes.Insert
redbuttonigniterthroughhandleholeguidingthewiresthroughandoutthe
sidefacingthechamber.Sizewires,removeinsulation,slideonheat
shrink,crimponterminalsslideheatshrinktoinsulateterminalandwire
connection.Heatshrinktubingusingalighterorhairdryer.Connectigniter
terminalstothreadedelectrodeassemblyinthisorder:washerterminal

nutandtighten.Theelectrodeassemblywellnutswillexpandinthehole
andprovideanairtightseal,tightenuntil#188threadsareabovethenut.
CAUTIONBEFORECHECKINGELECTRODEGAPMAKESURE
CHAMBERISEMPTYOFGLUE/PRIMERVAPORS.
Withchamberopenandfromadistance,looktocheckforsparkjumping
electrodegap.Yourgapshouldbearound1/8to3/16andproducea
brightspark.Iftheelectrodesaretooclosepullthemoutandfile/grindof
tipsslightlytowidenthegap.Onceyouhaveconsistentsparkitstimeto
addtheelectrodecovers(plasticcoverwithmetalinsert).Alignoverthe
threadedelectrodeendandgentlytapon.

Step4:Usingthelauncher
1.Nowthatyousparkisverified,testfitthethreadedplugintotheadapter.
ItshouldengagethethreadsatLEASTTWOTURNS.Ifnot,checkforcrud
inthethreads,andifclear,obtaina60degtrianglediamondfile,andsize
downtheplugthreadsalittle.Thethreadsareata60degangle,socareful
filing.Usuallyfilingthefirstfewthreadsisok.
2.Withthecapoff,loadapotato!Withthechamberontheground,placea
potatooverthemuzzleofthespudgunlauncher,andpressitdownwith
yourpalm,shavingofftheexcess,creatingacylindricalpotatoplug.Make
surethepotatocontactsthewallfirmlyallaround,oritwillnotfireornot
thatwell.Loadingthepotatosidewaysisacceptable,asitcreatesamore
stableprojectileanyway.Ramthepotatodowntowithin2"ofthebreechof
thebarrel,usingasmallerdiameterPVCpipeorbroomstick.Don'tpushit
toofaroritwillfalloutintothechamber...andjustbesubjecttoashort
bakingcycle.
3.Withthespudfirmlyseatedinthebreech,pickupthelauncherand
holdingwithonehand,dispense12secondsofStaticGuard(hairspray
workstoo)directlyintothechamber.Don'tusetoomuchitwilljustmakea
mess.Quicklyclosebyscrewingontheendcaphandtight,donotusea
tooltotightentotwoturnsoryouwilllikelynevergetitoffagain.
4.Callout"Fireinthehole!",pointthelauncherinasafedirection,and
depresstheigniterbutton.Thatpotatoyourammeddownthereshouldexit
ataquiterapidratewithasizablereport,anddependingonwhereyou
aimedandatwhatangleyoupointed,itwentanywherefrom6inchesto
~200yardsfromthemuzzle.Prettycool.Ifyouclickedtheigniterafew
timesanditdidn'twork,youarenotalone,checkoutmynextsection.
5.Ifspudgunworked,great!Removetheendcap(thismayrequireatool),
ventthespentgassesgettingafreshloadofair,andrepeatasnecessary!

Troubleshootingyourspudguncannon
Therearealotofreasonswhyyourspudgunlaunchermaynotbeworking.
FirstandforemostNEVERtakeoffthecapandstartclickingawayatthe
igniter.Thisagainhasledtohumanfiresandthatchemicalthermalhair
removalthingagain....
Hairsprayincoldweatherjustdoesnotgowell.Toomuchoftheburnable
stuffinthespraycondensesonthechamberwalls,makingitverydifficultto
burn.Youmightconsideralighter,hotterfuel(propane....)
To'defuse'amisfireyouneedtotakeoffthecap,whilepointingitinasafe
direction.Allowthechambertoairoutforseveralminutes,perhapslonger,
togetthefuelloadout.Afteryouarecertainthefuelhasbeenvented,
againverifythespark,justbyturningthechamberenoughsoyoucansee
wherethesparkshouldbe.Neverpointthechamberboredirectlyatyour
face,orbody,oranybodyelse.Ifitsparksthenitisafuelmixtureproblem.
Oneofthemostcommonfuelproblemsleadingtomisfireistoomuchfuel!
Notusuallyaproblemwithhairspray,otherricherfuelscanbeoverloaded
abovetheirUELvalue,andtheywontwork.Alwaystrylessfuelratherthan
morefuel.
Ifyoustillcan'tgetittoworkIinviteyoutoperusethemanyotherwebsites
thattalkabouthowtotroubleshootyourcombustionlauncher.
