All Questions carry equal marks
?????
1. For a symmetrical tangent cam operating a roller follower, find
(a) the distance between cam centre and nose radius

(b) nose radius,

(c) angle of contact of cam with straight flank with the following data.

Least radius of cam = 25 mm, roller radius = 20mm, total lift = 20 mm, angle

ascent and descent.
[16]
2. The cam rotating clockwise at a uniform speed of 500 rpm with minimum radius is
40 mm and the line of stroke of the follower is offset by 15 mm from the axis of the
cam and the displacement of the follower is to take place with uniform and equal
acceleration and retardation on both the outward and the return stroke with the
following data:

(a) follower to move outward through a distance of 20 mm during 1200of rotation

(b) dwell for next 600
(c) return to initial position during 900 and dwell for the remaining 900 of rotation.

Then determine maximum velocity and acceleration during out ward stroke and
return stroke.

materials of manufacture.
[8+8]
4. (a) Discuss the theories of failure and design procedure when a shaft is subjected
both bending and twisting moments simultaneously.

(b) A solid circular shaft is subjected to a bending moment of 300 N-m and torque
of 1000 N-m. The shaft is made of c-45 steel having ultimate tensile stress
of 70 N/mm2 and an ultimate shear stress of 50 N/mm2 . By assuming the
factor of safety as 6, determine the diameter of the shaft required.
[8+8]
5. The linkage in figure 3 has O2 A = 20 mm, AB = 50 mm AC = 35 mm and offset
= 10mm .The crank angle in the position shown is 340 and angle BAC = 380 . Find

(a) Locomotive coupling rod linkage,
(b) Steam engine,
(c) oscillating cylinder engine,
(d) Hand pump.

[16]

7. Explain the types of instantaneous centres for a mechanism. Locate all the instantaneous centres for the mechanism shown in the figure 1. Determine the velocity
