Introduction
India is blessed with a diversity of agro-climatic conditions prevailing in the
different regions in the country. A wide range of climatic and edaphic conditions in the Indian
sub-continent ensures that it is ideally suited to produce almost all the fruits and ornamental
crops. Commercial horticulture has been of recent origin though the traditional fruit and flower
cultivation has been going on for centuries. Emphasis has been shifting from agriculture to
horticulture for increasing per unit returns. The liberalisation of economy has given an impetus to
the Indian entrepreneurs for establishing export oriented horticulture. Maharashtra, Karnataka,
Andhra Pradesh have emerged as major horticulture centres in recent times.
Farmers face the deficiency in obtaining good quality and sufficient planting
material of fruits and flowering crops. There is immense need to motivate them and to increase
their awareness about improved production technology. Horticulture may play great role for
income generation and employment opportunities to rural people, who are using traditional
cropping system e.g. Wheat, Rice Potato, Sugarcane etc.
In states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, even in Orissa
propagation in poly bags is the common practice. This minimizes the maintenance and expenditure
on uprooting, transport and also assures almost cent- per cent establishment. It is proposed in this
proposal that new innovations will be attempted in propagation of fruits and flowering plants. In
order to boost up the quality nursery stock production, there is a need to develop a small nursery of
Ornamentals and Fruit plants in this zone.
Objectives
Establishment of mother block of mango and rose and conservation of gladiolus corms of
different varieties in the Department.
Maintenance of mother stocks for large scale production of quality planting materials /
seedlings of ornamentals and fruit plants of proposed crops.
Multiplication of elite clones and promising varieties of proposed crops.
Supply of seedlings / palnting materials to State Horticulture Mission as per demand on
priority basis.
Justification
Selection of the elite mother plant will be done with greatest care since the performance
of the progeny depends entirely upon the characteristics of the mother plant. While selecting
mother plants following basic characteristics have been concidered (i) Consistently high
performance and yield over several years (ii) Healthy and free from incidence of diseases and
insect pests (iii) Plants with appropriate quality parameters. The maintenance of these blocks
will be done regularly so that they remain healthy and free from diseases and insect pests.
With the objective of making available enough scion sticks, a new mother plant block
will be established by grafting / budding on suitable root stocks or by purchaing from relaible
source. These plants will be pruned regurly to keep them in vegetative phase and to produce
enough shoots for propagation round the year. The maintenance of these blocks will be done
rigorously to achive the target of healthy, disease and insect free plants / scion. To avoid over
crowding and problemof light penetration, canopy management will be practiced depending
upon the situation.
