half-air half-snow

(2015)

for flute and violin

Jeremy Corren

half-air half-snow

written for the Wet Ink Ensemble

Notes
General

Tempo changes
Throughout the piece, changes in tempo occur with regularity, often preceded by accelerations and decelerations. Tempo changes here are
meant chiefly to convey a impressions of musical time relative to the reference tempo at which the piece begins
reference tempo: = 78
faster tempo: = 86 slower tempo: = 64
Since these changes do not reflect exact metric transformations, the performers ought to come to an agreement about the three main tempos
but without adhering metronomically to the exact tempi given.

Tremolos
Often, tremolos appear in the context of dynamic swells and their speed should be determined in the spirit of that context
generally, tremolo ought to be played quite quickly and freely and their general speed should not vary even during tempo
changes.

Intonation
The majority of this piece was written without recourse to non-conventional tunings however, there is a climactic point near the
mid-point in the piece (m. 60) at which the players harmonize a chord that approximates several partials in the harmonic series of
the Violins open G string. (White note-heads here represent the Violins open strings) The result should be acoustically consonant.
- The 5th partial is approximated by the violins B, which is played a 1/12th tone flat.
- The 7th partial is approximated by the violins F, which is played a 1/6th tone flat.
- The 11th partial is approximated by the flutes C, which is played a 1/4th tone sharp.

Flute

Multiphonics
Flute multiphonics are used in the context of this piece as harmonic objects, often ones that harmonize with multiple-stops on the violin. They are
intended usually to sound pure and somewhat distant only when loud dynamics are indicated should the multiphonic sound harsh. The
multiphonics are denoted by a boxed M. Here are a list of the ones employed and their corresponding fingerings.

Timbral changes
The flute part asks for tone-production on the following spectrum: air
The marking f.t. indicates flutter tongue.
The marking bisb. tr. indicates bisbigliando trill, or tone-color trill

aeolian

ord (normal tone quality)

Violin

Timbral changes
sul pont, indicated by s.p., should produce a mixed sonority of a pitchs fundamental and upper partials.
molto sul pont, indicated by m.s.p., should produce a sonority that is predominantly the upper partials of a pitch.
on the bridge, indicated by bridge, should produce an audible but pitchless sonority.

Tremolo glissando
During many fingered tremolo passages, a diagonal arrow between two tremolos indicates that the player should gliss
the tremolo up or down depending on the direction given.
