THE HISTORY OF REIKI

Dr. Mikao Usui

Dr. Usui was the principal of a university in Japan. One day his students
challenged him by asking how the biblical prophets healed. Dr. Usui could not
answer this. Being an honorable Japanese man he decided to dedicate his life to
discovering the inner healing powers and the ultimate purpose of life.
He set out to try to understand this, traveling frst to America to study at the
University of Chicago. Even though he received a Doctorate in Theology he did not
fnd what he was looking for, and eventually returned to Japan. He then began
visiting Buddhist monasteries, searching for the knowledge of physical healing. He
talked to many Buddhist priests and scholars about physical healing, but was told
that the ability to heal the body was lost long ago. Eventually he came across an
abbot of a Zen monastery who allowed him to study the sacred writings in the
Japanese Sutras (ancient teachings) and Sanskrit Sutras of Tibet. The abbot was
also interested in physical healing. He suggested Usui make a spiritual pilgrimage to
Mt Kurama a mountain where Buddhist monks used to meditate for enlightenment
and spiritual growth. Usui meditated there for 21 days in the hope of receiving

enlightenment. He set 21 stones aside to count the days, and discarded them one by
one, day by day. On the 21st day, being distressed for still not fnding what he
wanted, he saw a light in the distance coming towards him at a great speed. The
power of the light struck him on the forehead, making him unconscious. His spirit
rose out of his body in an out-of-body experience where he saw a beautiful rainbow
of colors and bubbles of light. The light contained the symbols of Reiki, which he
had seen in the ancient sutras. When he became conscious again he went dashing
down the mountain and stubbed his toe. He held it in his hands, only to realize the
pain had gone. For the frst time in his life Usui revealed the healing energies within
everyone. When he came down from the mountain to get some food he spoke to a
shop-owners daughter who was complaining about a toothache. Usui put his hands
over the girls face and her tooth was healed.
Soon after Usui returned to Kyoto he began working as a healer in a
beggars colony, which he did for seven years. After a while he noticed that some
of the poor people that he had healed would return to beg in the streets. He asked
them why they had returned to a life of begging and their response was that it was
too hard to live otherwise. Dr. Usui was upset by this and realized that he had
ignored their spiritual needs, which were as important as the physical healing. After
meditating on this he came up with the Reiki Ideals.Eventually, Usui left the beggars
colony and started to teach people how to heal themselves.
Usui practiced and taught Reiki throughout Japan for the remainder of his life,
and passed on the Master attunement to 16 other disciples. Before his death in the
late 1920s he passed on the Master attunement to one of his students, Dr Chujiro
Hayashi.

Dr. Chujiro Hayashi

Chujiro Hayashi, born 1878, was a former Captain in the Imperial Navy, and
a Naval Doctor. He took his Master training with Usui in 1925 at the age of 47. He
and two other Naval Offcers, Ushida and Taketomi, were the last to be taught by
Usui. Hayashi opened a clinic with eight beds and 16 healers, where clients would
be treated by two or more healers. Hayashi kept a detailed record of the
treatments, and used this information to create a manual of standard hand
positions for different ailments.

Hawayo Takata
Mrs. Hawayo Takata was born in 1900 on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. She
suffered from serious medical conditions, and was about to undergo an operation.
On the operating table, just before the surgery was about to start, Mrs Takata
heard a voice saying: The operation is not necessary. She asked her doctor if he
knew of any other ways to restore her health issue, and he referred her to Dr.
Hayashis clinic. Mrs Takata felt the heat from the practitioners hands in Dr.
Hayashis clinic being so strong that she was sure they were using some sort of
electrical equipment maybe little electric heaters secreted up their sleeves. She
looked into the large sleeves of their Japanese kimonos, and under the treatment
table, but there was nothing there. Her skepticism turned to belief as her health
problems resolved, and she decided that she wanted to learn Reiki.
At the same time Dr. Hayashi was looking to teach Reiki to another woman
besides his wife, knowing that women would not be called up to fght in the war.
Since Mrs. Takata was persistent he taught her to a Master level, in 1938, and gave
her permission to teach Reiki in the West. She was the 13 th and probably the last
Reiki Master that Dr. Hayashi initiated. Between 1970 and her death in 1980 Mrs.
Takata taught 22 Reiki Masters. Until quite recently, all Reiki practitioners in the
West derived their Reiki from this lady.

What Is Reiki?
Reiki energy can be viewed in many ways. For some, Reiki can simply be
used as a healing modality for stress reduction and relaxation. For others, Reiki can
open up a world of magic that exist within the physical and the non-physical world.
It solely depends on one's intention and how deep one is willing to go in their own
healing process. Reiki is a medicine, a channel that connects one to the Universal
Life Force Energy, it is a divine energetic connection that will lead one further to his
or her own awaken. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the
premise that an unseen "life force energy" fows through us and is what causes us to
be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel
stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being present and healthy.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei and Ki. Rei means "God
or Goddess, the Higher Power, Spirit, Great Mystery or Spiritual Consciousness". It
is sacred energy from which we draw upon through the boundless, divine essence of
the Universe. Ki means "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life
force energy." Other traditions recognize this life force energy by other names. In
the Yoga Tradition it is called Prana, The Chinese refer to it as Chi. Hawaiian
shamans identify it as Mana and Egyptians name it KA.
Reiki has no religion, or dogma. Reiki is a spiritually guided energy for the
soul. Its force has an intelligence that supersedes us. The medicine of Reiki simply
goes to the root of the dis-ease of the soul that needs attention and healing.
Depending on the individual, a treatment can feel like a soft or strong energy that
fows through and around you, or sometimes the individual might not feel anything
or will simply fall asleep. The ultimate goal of Reiki is to treat the whole person. This
includes the body, emotions, mind and spirit in order to bring one into a sense of
peace, alignment and wellbeing. Neither the practitioner nor the client needs to
know the exact issue or area requiring treatment. The Reiki energy works according
to the priority of the bodys needs. It works on the physical, emotional and mental
bodies beyond all time and space. Consciously or unconsciously, the recipient
controls the healing process. When a certain area has received enough Reiki, the
energy innately knows to move on. While the fow of Reiki energy increases with
use, once attuned, the ability to transmit Reiki is forever there, even if it is not used
for months or years. When called upon, it can always be accessed. Reiki can also
be used for plants, animals, food and water. On a grander scale, the energy can
also be directed towards the Earth.

The Attunement Process

Reiki is a transmission passed on from Reiki Master to student through the
attunement process. It is an initiation to a higher level of consciousness. When one
consciously opens his or her heart to receive Reiki, one opens the path to receive
many blessings. The attunement process works based on the karma or energy of the
individual. For some the attunement can be an intense healing process, for others it
can bring a sense of peace. One thing is for sure, Reiki heals and conditions the
crown, heart, and palm chakras for the use in channeling Reiki and makes other
adjustments in the student's energy system necessary on an individual basis.
The attunement energies are channeled into the student through the Reiki
Master. The process is guided by the Reiki or God-consciousness and makes
adjustments in the energetic feld of the student depending on his or her needs. The
attunement is also attended by Reiki guides and other spiritual beings who help
implement the process. Once an attunement is received, the student automatically
becomes a Reiki practitioner. Reiki can help one to open their unique gifts. The
attunement does not give the receiver anything new, rather, it opens and aligns what
was already inherit in the DNA. Many report having mystical experiences involving
personal messages, healing, visions, and past life experiences. Reiki is a gift which
comes directly from the highest spiritual source and as such should be treated with
the greatest respect. This makes Reiki a healing technique of special importance for
the period of development in which we presently fnd ourselves - when the
consciousness of the planet is advancing quickly and there is a signifcantly
increased interest in spiritual healing.
The process of attunement or initiation is what sets Reiki apart from every
other form of laying on of hands or touch healing. The attunement is not just a
healing session, it transforms the healer. As one progresses on the path of Reiki,
each degree's attunements increases the positive power of one's ability to channel
Ki.

The Reiki Session

Whether giving Reiki to yourself or another, it is important to consciously
prepare. With these step, you will be grounded and centered for your session. You
will also mindfully ask for guidance, and graciously close the session, affrming that
healing has taken place on all levels.

Opening
1) Set and activate your altar as verbally instructed in Attunement.
2) Center Yourself
Return to your healing temple and see yourself standing in a state of peace.
Begin to feel your heart space open and as it expands, a white light emerges.
From the heart space, invite your spirit guides, masters of the universe or the
angelic realm to support you in this healing session.
3) Grounding/Anchoring
Once the heart space is open, visualize a beam of white light emanating from
your heart down through the base of your spine and to your feet. Feel and
plant your feet frmly on the ground and visualize that your feet are touching
the grass or soil of Mother Earth; cords of light are shooting out from the soles
of your feet, like the roots of a tree. Allow these cords to burrow deeply
towards the center. As you feel the earth and all her elements, Mother Earth
herself appears and she comes with her gift of light to pass on to you. She
places her hands on the soles of your feet, transmitting a beam of green light
that fows all the way up to your heart space and crown. Your connection to
the earth is complete.
4) Connection to Heaven/ Spirit
Return to your temple, your heart space. Visualize a beam of light emerge
from your heart up to your crown and beyond. As you feel the connection to
Spirit, see a long, spiral staircase show up that connects you to the Kingdom
Of Heaven. Go and walk up the stairs, as you go up, you see the sky looks

luminescent and your spirit feels enlighten. Once you arrive, a beautiful
golden temple appears and in this temple wise teachers appear, as well as
the angelic kingdom. You walk towards these beings of light. They meet with
you to pass on their gift of light. Their hands touch your crown and light
stream down towards your heart down to your feet. Feel the wisdom of the
heavens being passed on to you. Your connection to the heavens is complete.
5) Protection
Return to your temple. You are now connected to the heavens and the earth.
The beam of light in your heart continues to expand in and around your body,
forming a healing bubble that encompasses your auric feld. This healing
bubble shifts into the sacred geometry of the fower of life. Feel yourself
complete protected, connected and grounded in this spehric sphere. Only the
highest love of light is welcome to assist you in this healing session. You may
now begin the session.
6) Gassho- Two Hands Coming Together
Place hands together in prayer position, thumbs touching your heart center.
Close your eyes and focus your entire attention on the point where the two
middle fngers meet.
Connect with the Reiki energy by asking it to fow through you. Repeat the
wish three times in your mind.
Ask for the recovery and or health of the client on all levels
Example: Please allow the Reiki energy, which is pure love to fow through
me, and let it provide the healing that is needed and wanted for (patient's
name).

7) Reiji-Ho- Third Eye Guidance

Bring Hands in gassho up to the tird eye, resting your thumbs over your third
eye.
Imagine becoming a hollow stalk of bamboo through which the Reiki can fow
uninhabited.
Mentally ask the Reiki energy to guide your hands and to help you to listen to
your heart as you transmit the energy for yourself or another.
Example: Please direct my hands and my heart to the areas that need
healing the most.

8) Invocation
The invocation can be as short or as long as you like. Just remember, quality is
always better than quantity.
Example: I invite all helping guides and angels to join me in the session for
(patient's name). May this session provide the healing that (patient's name)
needs, and let it be for the highest good.

Closing
1) Grounding
Rest your hands on the client's feet and affrm that they are grounded and
centered. Mentally thank the client for participating and allowing you to be a
part of their healing session.
2) Smoothing and Seal the Aura
To smooth the aura, lightly brush the aura with long strokes the entire length
of the body, from head to toe. At the feet, send any leftover debris into the
Mother Eart to be recycled. Do this three times. Intend to settle and clear the
aura of any energetic disturbances.
To seal the aura, on either side of the client, gently weave your hands
together reminiscent of the Celtic weave or the intertwined serpents on the
caduceus (the staff that symbolizes the medical profession). Do this seven
times on each side.
3) Affrmation and Thanks
Confrm the healing that has taken place and thank all the guides for assisting
in the session.
Example: I affrm that (patient's name) has received healing on all levels,
through all time and space. Thank you to all the helping guides and spirits
who have participated in this session.
4) The Kenyoku Techinque / Dry Bathing
Dry bathing ensures complete disengagement from a client after a session.
Have the the intention to brush off any energetic residue from yourself and
send it into the earth.
With your right hand on your left shoulder, drag your right hand across your

body past your right hip. Repeat on with your left hand on your right shoulder
and then once more with your right hand. Then with your right hand on your
left shoulder, draw your right hand down the outside of your left arm, past
your fngers. Again, repeat with your left hand on your right shoulder, and
once more with your right hand. Lastly, place your right hand on your left
shoulder and move your right hand down the inside of your left arm past your
fngers. Repeat with your left hand on your right shoulder and again with your
right hand.

Legalities
New York State does not require a license or any other governmental or nongovernmental agency registration, approval, consent or authorization to practice.
As of February 1999, the NY State Board of Massage reviewed the practice
of Reiki and ruled the modality exempt from the discipline of massage. Reiki was
considered spiritual healing.

Power Intensifcation
Try these techniques to strengthen the fow of Reiki energy:
1) Aura Massage
Hold your hands (palms facing the clients's body) 2 to 3 inches above the
area to be treated for about 20 seconds. Then gently allow your hands to
move according to what the body asks for. Hold the position again for
another 20 seconds, and listen to the body. Repeat this technique several
more times then treat the area as usual.
2) Blowing on an area
Hold your hands about 6 to 8 inches apart with palms facing each other.
Gently blow between your hands toward the region of the body to be treated.
After blowing on it, treat the area as usual.
3) Rubbing hands
Before beginning the Reiki session, bring your palms together and rub them
intensely for a moment.
4) 'Homeopathic Touch
In the aura, just above the area to be treated, gently 'massage' for anywhere
between 20 seconds and 2 minutes. Then place your hands on the region as
usual.
