Three theoretical and two practical sessions had been planned for this section. In
the first session, presented by Dr. Hamed Ekhtiari (Neurocognitive lab. director)
[2], students got familiar with basic concepts of Transcranial Electrical
Stimulation (TES) and different steps in designing and running a TES study [3].

18

1st Tehran IBRO/APRC Associate School of Cognitive Neuroscience on Functional Human Brain Mapping

22-28 May, 2015

In the second session, taught by Dr. Neil Muggleton [4], students got familiar
with basic concepts of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and essential
topics which need to be kept in mind when designing and running TMS
experiments such as coil type selection, stimulation frequency selection,
stimulation site selection/localization, main task design, control task design, and
finally some examples of special vision, working memory/executive function, or
decision making tasks (depending on the theme of the students) which can be run
while using rTMS.
Then, the hands-on session of TES was administrated by Ms. Padideh Nasseri,
Mr. Milad Kassaie, and Dr. Fatemeh Yavari. In this session, at first 10-20 EEG
system, which is the most common method for electrode localization in
TES/TMS experiment, was explained. Then Ms. Nasseri and Mr. Kassaie talked
about requirements of a TES experiment, different TES electrodes montages [5],
and safety points related to running a TES experiment. Then students were
divided into groups of three people and practiced finding different locations of
10-20 EEG system, fixating tDCS electrodes on the head, application of 1mA
direct current for 5 minutes, and concurrently performing a visual, executive
function/working memory, or decision making computerized task (Balloon
Analogue Risk Task (BART), n-back task with images and letters, depending on
their theme).
The first session in the afternoon was taught by Prof. Vincent Walsh [6]. Since
the students were supposed to write a proposal on the last day of the school, Prof.
Walsh talked about the principles of proposal writing. He explained about the
essential parts of a proposal and then he divided the students into several groups
and gave them enough time to write a proposal. Subsequently, each group
explained their proposal and Prof. Walsh carefully examined different aspects of
it (hypothesis, methods, novelty, etc.) and explained about the strong and weak
points of each proposal.
In the final session, students practically got familiar with TMS device under the
supervision of Dr. Muggleton and Prof. Walsh. Different topics were practiced in
this session including recording a motor evoked potential response from hand
muscle, phosphene generation using TMS, performing a computerized visual
search task concurrent with rTMS application, and TMS navigation system (if the
students asked about). At the end of the day, instructors were at the students
disposal to answer their questions.

One theoretical (2 hours) and two practical sessions (1:30 and 2 hours) had been
planned for this section. In the first session, presented by Dr. Reza Khosrowabadi,
students got familiar with basic concepts of Electroencephalography (EEG)
including introduction to sources of neural activities, EEG device compartments,
standard placement of electrodes, preprocessing of the raw EEG data, different
steps in designing an EEG study and data analysis with several techniques. We
tried to cover univariate, bivariate and multivariate methods therefore techniques
suchas event related potential (ERP), power spectrum, quantifized EEG (QEEG),
functional connectivity based methods were introduced.

In the second session, Ms. Shadi Bagherzadeh demonstrated the basic concepts
of EEG/ERP data recording and essential steps needed for designing and running
an EEG/ERP experiment. The theory behaind EEG cap selection and placement,
experimental design (a high demanding task vs a low demanding task), and
cognitive theories for vision, working memory/executive function, or decision
making tasks (depending on the theme of the students) were explained.
Subsequently, the explained materials were practiced by students and EEG/ERP
data as well as subject's behavioral preformances were simultaneously recorded
during a predesigned task (depending on the students theme). The EEG data was
recorded by Mitsar system.
Mrs. Leila Niazi was responsible for the afternoon session related to EEG/ERP
data analysis. She explained the ERP components of the practiced task (vision,
visuospatial working memory or gambeling task) and the concept behind the task
and its neurobehavioral markers were highlighted. Then, students practically got
familiar with EEG/ERP data analysis using WinEEG software under supervision
of Dr. Ana Garcia, Dr. Reza Khosrowabadi and Mrs. Leila Niazi. Pipline of EEG
data preprocessing and extraction of the ERP components were practiced.
Finally during the group discussion, students found time for their remained
questions. For a better intraction between student and explaining an application
of EEG data analysis, two neurofeedback games (mindflex) were also presented
to students.
