Mike Brown enjoying competition with Alex Goode for

England full-back slot

Sport is littered with great rivalries and England's Mike Brown insists his
full-back duel with Alex Goode is driving the pair on to new heights.

Brown is England head coach Stuart Lancaster's present No 1 at full-back but an

untimely concussion, suffered against Italy in the second game of the Six Nations,
opened the door for Goode and allowed him a starting berth in the defeat against
Ireland1.
After recovering, Brown was immediately restored for the final two games of the
Championship against Scotland and France but former Cambridge Rugby Club player
Goode impressed sufficiently in his first international start for over a year despite the
loss against Ireland.
Goode and Brown are two very different players the Saracens man can play at fly-half
or full-back and has a wonderful kicking game, while the Harlequin is a spiky character
and a brave defender.
Add into the mix Worcester Warrior Chris Pennell and Northampton's Ben Foden and
England boss Lancaster has some tough decisions to make at full-back ahead of
September's World Cup.
And Brown insists who will start at No 15 between himself and Goode is too close to
call presently.
"We've spoken about competition for places and 15 is definitely one that is strongly
contested," said Brown, speaking at the Rosslyn Park HSBC National Schools Sevens
the world's largest schools rugby tournament.

"Alex Goode did well, unfortunately he was in that losing team against Ireland but he
did well with his opportunity.
"Saying that I don't want to give him too many opportunities touch wood. He is a great
player so it is good to have that rivalry and push each other in training.
"Maybe before people might have said he had a better kicking game but I think after
this tournament, people can see my kicking game, my range of kicks as well has come
on.
"I'm sure it's something he thinks is one of his strengths, being a 10 as well as a 15, but
I've worked hard on it and the coaches have seen how hard I've worked on it and how
much it has improved.
"He's a quality player and also a top person off the field as well. I get on with him really
well. It's all about competition for places and I'm sure he'll be in and around the World
Cup camp which is great.
"We'll all be pushing each other. It's great you can have friendships in the same position
as you off the field as well, I've definitely got that with him."
England Rugby Union player Mike Brown2 was speaking on behalf of HSBC at the
Rosslyn Park HSBC National Schools Sevens where he helped run HSBC coaching
clinics for schools during the tournament.

Cambridge weather for Thursday, April 2

IES en Lenguas Vivas Juan R. Fernndez

Cloud is likely to thicken overnight as Wednesday draws to a close, with

spells of rain arriving from the west, though these will be mainly light in
nature.

Winds will become light and variable, but rain should eventually clear southwards by
dawn, perhaps lingering for a time in Essex.
As we move into Thursday any early rain should clear, leaving a dry and bright day with
some sunny
spells during the
morning,
especially in the
east.
Cloud will
gradually
thicken from the
west later, with
the day
expected to be
largely dry and
bright.
