Learning Outcomes Covered

Obtain a systematic understanding of the key aspects of strategy. This will be

gained through the acquisition of coherent and detailed knowledge of relevant
aspects of strategy, which will range from classical theories to the latest
thinking in the subject.
Develop the ability to accurately deploy established strategy techniques and
approaches, as well as the latest thinking, regarding analysis, enquiry and
application to strategy related concepts and practical situations.
Be able to apply the methods, techniques and approaches learnt to review,
consolidate extend and apply their knowledge of strategy and related areas to
initiate strategy related tasks and projects, from theoretical or practitioner
perspectives.
Be able to exercise their own initiative and responsibilities regarding
undertaking further training and learning in strategy and related areas.
Be able to develop and manage their own approaches to learning and training,
identifying appropriate research articles and data, as well as identifying their
future training needs in areas relating to strategy.

The portfolio consists of 5 take home assignments.

1. A write up of 2000 words on a preferred business firm explaining their business
level strategies. Students are asked to comment on low price,
differentiation and hybrid strategies adopted.
2. A case study on a manufacturing firm was given to the students to comment on
their corporate level strategy 1500 words
3. A write up on a selected firm explaining the international strategy. Students are
asked to comment on the type/s of strategies, entry strategies and their
suggestions. 1000 words
4. A 10 slide power point presentation on Vision, Mission and goals of a known
business firm.
5. Write an essay identifying your future training needs in areas relating to
strategic management skills- 1000 words

Criteria for marking

Use this grid to assess each portfolio
70-100 A quite exceptional and outstanding piece of answer, providing insights, which is not been
subject to repetition; this range is distinguished by superior organization, economic use of
language and totally comprehensive, given the conditions of the question. Excellent
understanding and application of the relevant theoretical model with no errors. The piece
of work written very well.
60-69 An answer which demonstrates an excellent understanding of the relevant theory and of
the complexity of the issues involved. There is a sound basis of relevant factual knowledge
and/or the theoretical issues involved. There is either some measure of original thinking in
the answer or an accurate and comprehensive account is given in a way which
demonstrates understanding of the question. Evidence of creativity, critical approach, and
wide reading, beyond the core subject matter and has been written very well.
50-59 An answer which demonstrates a clear understanding of the theory and grasp of the
complexity of the issues involved. There is a sound basis of relevant factual knowledge
and/or of theoretical issues involved with valid argument present to discuss the context
with few significant errors. The issues involved are dealt with in a systematic way.
40-49
An answer which demonstrates an understanding of the basic question. There is a basis of
factual knowledge and/or of relevant theoretical issues. Although some errors present in
understanding the theory, the overall framework of the answer is sensible and accurate.
Most of all the issues are dealt at the level of obviously known information about the
theory given. The answer shows planning in its construction, with some basic applications
and a little or no development of argument present. Average competent performance, well
presented, demonstrating understanding of most of the essential issues.
0-39
An answer which demonstrates a limited understanding of the relevant question. There is
some relevant factual knowledge and/or awareness of the relevant theoretical model, but it
is patchy. A few significant errors present in writing. The answer is not well planned, with
little development of argument, and often much irrelevant discussion is present. Lacks
clarity of expression.
