planning begins on
emerg department

The initial planning stage is underway for the emergency department upgrades at the Nicola Valley Hospital,after
they were first announced last year.
Interior Health has released a request
for proposals for architectural and planning consultants to develop a plan to assess the physical space and health-care
service requirements for the hospital s
emergency department.
During the planning process, the consultants will consider patient privacy
and confidentiality, safety, infection prevention and control measures, and patient access and flow.
The cost of the planning will be approximately $600,000, to be shared between the Province, through Interior
Health, and the Thompson Regional
Hospital District.
This phase is expected to take 9-12
months to complete. Built in 1964, the
hospital serves a population of approx.
12,000 people.

Effective at noon today, Friday, July 3,

all open fires including campfires
will be prohibited throughout the entire
Kamloops Fire Centre, until further notice. The ban has been put in place to
help prevent human-caused wildfires
and protect public safety.
The fire danger rating is currently
"high" throughout the Kamloops Fire
Centre, with some areas, including Merritt, rated "extreme". With the current
trend of warm and dry weather, wildfires
in the region have displayed aggressive
behaviour and have required additional
firefighting resources. Human-caused
wildfires can divert critical resources and
crews from responding to naturally occurring wildfires.
In addition to campfires, this prohibition applies to open fires of any size, industrial burning, fireworks, tiki torches,
sky lanterns and burning barrels. This
ban does not apply to cooking stoves that
use gas, propane or briquettes, or to a
portable campfire apparatus with a CSA
or ULC rating that uses briquettes, liquid
fuel or gaseous fuel, so long as the height
of the flame is less than 15 centimetres.

BreatheBikes beginner's guided ride

BreatheBikes is hosting its first beginner's guided ride on Monday, July 6 at

7pm. Meet at their shop, 1975 Coutlee
Ave. For the first ride, they will head out
to the lower Coutlee flats (behind Secure
All storage), for an approx. 1km loop on
mostly flat with a few gentle grades.
Theyll review the basics of gear shifting
and balance to give beginner mountain
bikers info about some key skills that are
developed and honed by mountain bikers at every level. Rides will follow every
Monday in July. If you need a rental,
come by the shop before the weekly ride
to reserve a bike for $20. Experienced riders are also invited to join the group and
share your knowledge and skills.
