TegalisalargecityinthenorthwestpartofCentral
JavaProvinceofIndonesia.Itissituatedonthenorth
coastofCentralJava,about175kilometres(109mi)
fromSemarang,thecapitaloftheprovince.Itis
administrativelyseparatefromTegalRegency,which
bordersittothesouthandeast.
TheDutchEastIndiescolonialsugarindustry
originatedinTegalandthenearbycityof
Pekalongan,approximately50kilometres(31mi)to
theeast.TegalRegencyremainedamajorsugar
productioncenteruntilthemid20thcentury.[1]The
cityservedasaportforexportingsugarproducedon
thenearbyplantations.Tegalisfamousforits
warung,commonlycalled"warteg"orwarungtegal.
Itisalsoknownforitsteaproducts,suchastehbotol
Sosro,TongTjitea,2Tangtea,Gopekteaandother
brands.

History
ThecityofTegaldevelopedfromasmallvillagecalledTetegual.Themodernizationofthevillagebeganin
theearly1530s,anditeventuallybecamepartofthePekalonganRegency,whichadmittedtheexistenceof
thePajangEmpireinCentralJava.ThePajangEmpirewasthesuccessoroftheSultanateofDemak.
ThecitywasfoundedbyKiGedeSebayu.Togetherwiththelocalpeople,heaspiredtoincreasethe
regionsagriculture,exploitingitsfertilesoil.Becauseofhiseffortstodeveloptheregion,hebecamethe
highleaderandthesymbolofthecity.Hiscoronationasleaderwasheldsimultaneouslywithatraditional
festivalcelebratingarichagriculturalharvest.Inaccordancewithdistrictordinanceno.5/1988,July28is
theanniversaryofthecityofTegal.

Inthe1920s,thecitywasacenterofactivismfortheCommunist
PartyofIndonesia(PKI),andtheradicalleadersoftheTegalbranch
ofthePKIwereamongtheinstigatorsofthe1926rebellionthatled
tothetemporarydestructionofthatparty.[2]
OnOctober8,1945,anantifeudalismmovementcalledGerakan
TigaDaerah("ThreeRegionsMovement")wasestablishedin
Tegal,Pekalongan,andBrebes.Itsgoalwastoreplacetheblue
bloodregents(relatedtothekingsofYogyakartaandSurakarta)
withordinarypeople.Accordingtotheleadersofthismovement,
theoldregentshadcooperatedwiththeJapaneseduringtheworld
warIIandsentpeopletoJapaneseslavelaborcamps.Themain
leaderofGerakanTigaDaerahwasSarjiyo,whobecamethenew
regentofPekalongan.OtherswereKutil,K.MijayaandIr.
Sakirman.IrSakirmanwasthelocalleaderofthePKI.The
governmentoftheRepublicofIndonesiainYogyakartaopposed
GerakanTigaDaerahanddeclareditillegal.

GerakanTigaDaerahhadtheoldregentsarrested,strippednaked
anddraggedintoprison.Othergovernmentofficialsandpolice
officerswerekidnappedandmassacredatTalangbridge.The

GerakanTigaDaerahalsostartedaracialriotagainstethnic
(ca.192840)
ChineseinBrebes.OnNovember4,1945,themovementattacked
theIndonesianarmyheadquartersandtheregentofficein
Pekalongan.TherebelsweredefeatedbytheIndonesianarmyinafiercebattleonDecember21,1945,and
mostoftheirleaderswerearrestedandimprisoned.ThisrebellioniscalledtheThreeRegionsAffair.
DuringtheunrestfollowingtheresignationofPresidentSuhartoin1998,Tegalwasthesiteofextensive
protestsandoccasionalviolenceagainstlocalgovernmentofficials,especiallyinJune1998.
