FAMILY HISTORY

1. Maternal and Parental Grand Lineages

In Babe’s maternal and paternal grand lineages, his uncle on his
father’s side tried using marijuana and his grandmother on the same
lineage was an alcoholic. His grandfather committed suicide through
drinking poison.

None of his relatives was able to take care of him. It was only his
mother who did.

2. Father
Tigger, Babe’s father, is shy, sociable, and has difficulty making eye
contact upon our interview. Tigger prefers staying home than mingling
with the people around him. He drinks occasionally and does not
smoke. During his free time, he enjoys watching basketball than
gambling and sacrificing the welfare of his family. He provides for the
needs of his family as a construction worker earning approximately
300php per day.

Growing up, Tigger had a lot of difficulties. Considering that there are
many children in their family, feeding them and sending them to
school were already very difficult for their parents that is why he only
finished elementary education. He had a very irresponsible mother
who leaves them at home and goes with her friends to drink and stroll.
His father had to compensate for the irresponsibility of their mother
that eventually triggered him to commit suicide since he could no
longer handle the situation.

He believes that disciplining his children does not require spanking.

Instead, talking to them frequently about their mistakes makes them
learn and understand things. When Babe and his brother were still
infants, their father used to beat their mother because of jealousy.
Tigger also had a mistress, as reported by his wife, when Babe was ten
years old.
Babe and his father were close with each other back then. They would
play on weekends. His father could still remember the time when Babe
would always go where his father was. Babe would ride at the back of
the bike his father was driving.

3. Mother
Piglet is very calm and approachable. She has been a BHW for five
years now earning 500php per month as honorarium. She is a hands-on
mother. She is proud to say that her children are very close to her. They
are not hesitant to share their feelings and thoughts with her. They ask
for her advice whenever they are faced with a problem. She does not
believe in spanking her children when they do something wrong.
Instead, she talks to them and makes them understand the situation.
She is presently in good terms with her husband. Her husband can rely
on her to run the household when he is at work. She is a kind of mother
that encourages her children to explore their skills and abilities.

4. Siblings
Babe is the second among four children. She has an elder brother and
two younger sisters. Her mother did not have any miscarriages or
abortions. The siblings are close with one another. They do not argue.
None of them have been caught doing antisocial behaviors or
something that their parents will disapprove of.

C. PERSONALITY HISTORY

1. Prenatal
Piglet was very careful with her pregnancy with Babe. She watched
her diet eating only vegetables, fish, and sea foods. She did not have
any unusual emotions during pregnancy. She took care of the baby
inside of her through religiously following her prenatal check-ups and
completing up to TT3 of her immunizations. She also availed of the
vitamins in their health center.
2. Birth
Babe was delivered full term at home via NSVD by a trained hilot
(who happened to be her aunt) without complications on July 27,
1988. Prior to delivery, his mother did not have any difficulty and only
labored for 3 hours.

3. Infancy and Childhood characteristics

During infancy, Babe was breastfed until the age of two years old. He
was breastfed, every time he cried, for duration of 30 minutes. His
mother would also cuddle him at times. He was introduced to drinking
through a glass when he was one year old. Babe’s weaning was
implemented when he was two years old. He was left with his
grandmother and separated from her mother for one night. They also
practiced a bisaya tradition termed as pakaon ug piso (fed with a
chick) as believed to be effective to wean an infant from breastfeeding.

Babe was 9 months old when he grew his first teeth. He was 7 months
when he first pronounced the word “mama”, 6 months when he
became able to sit and support himself, 9 months when he began to
crawl, and 1 year and 2 months when he made his first step. He was 1
year and 8 months when his mother toilet trained him using a potty. He
was 2 years old when he began to converse and started to stutter.

He occasionally wets his bed (eneuresis). He did not have a history of

thumb sucking, night terrors, stammering, falls, and infantile
convulsions. Babe was noted to be a good child so he did not have any
history of tantrums. He only suffered common childhood illnesses
such as colds, flu, and fever.

4. Psychosexual history
Babe was in third grade when he was circumcised. He also had a habit
of touching his genitals but his father would reprimand him not to
touch it. It was during his sixth grade when he started to have a crush.
He was 15 years old when his voice started to change and his pubic
hair started to grow.
5. Play life
Babe also enjoyed playing games during his childhood but before
playing, he would do his assignments first. Some of the games he
enjoyed playing were tag and tigso. His playmates were a mix of boys
and girls that also have same age with him. Every afternoon, if the
weather permits, his playmates would come fetch him at home and
they would play by the shore around 4:00 P.M. but both he and his
brother would have an initiative to go home at 5:30 or when they see
that it is already getting dark. In instances that they seem to go home
quite late already, their mother follows them to their play place and
brings them home.

6. School history
Babe entered school at the age of 5 years old, he was in kinder I then.
He completed his elementary and secondary education. He started
HRM in college at the age of 18 but was unable to finish it because his
condition relapsed. He had a good outlook towards school. Attending
school was something he always looked forward to. He did not have
any maladjustment or difficulties with school. He did not experience
crying spells and separation anxiety. He dis not have any problems
with his teachers. He always made it a point to attend school even if
the do not have enough money for his fare. Babe was always
interested in studying. Filipino was his favorite subject and he disliked
Mathematics. He was not an achiever but failed none of his subjects.

7. Religious and social adaptability

He has a group of friends with mixed ages and gender exhibiting that
he is also friendly and sociable and that he tries to overcome his
shyness. Prior to his illness, the people around him consider him to be
patient and understanding.

He is not very active in church, fellowships, and community programs.

He prefers staying at home.

Babe confides with his mother whenever he has failures and successes.
He is joyful when he succeeds with something and tries to move on
after failing in something.

8. Occupational history
When Babe was still well, he tried various jobs to help his family,
provide for his personal needs, and wanted to know how it feels like to
work. After high school, he worked as a carwash boy for 6 months. He
earned 1,500 php per month. He was not able to save because he spent
the money for his food and clothes and giving an average of 100 to
200 php to his mother. For a change of environment, he transferred to
Queensland motel as a wash and fold boy earning 88 php per day that
lasted until his admission to the psychiatric ward. He did not have any
history of problems with his superiors and subordinates.

D. ONSET OF PRESENT ILLNESS

In one of the afternoons of March 2006, Babe wanted to buy a pair of long
pants at NCCC mall. On Babe’s way to the mall, he crossed the pedestrian lane in front
of the establishment. What he could remember, as what he articulated to his mother, was
that she was behind a group of college girls when he was hit by a speeding vehicle. As
stated by the witnesses within the scene, Babe was thrown far away from his original
place of stay. He had bruises all over his body and he did not notice that his head got
smacked to the cemented road. The responsible person for the accident took Babe to
Ricardo Limso Medical center. Babe did not undergo a thorough assessment. Her
mother said that an X-ray was the only test done. To compensate for what Babe had
gone through, the vehicle owner that hit him paid for the test and bought the medicines
that were prescribed to heal his wounds.

3 months after the incident, around June of 2006, his parents were quite
astonished with his presenting set of behaviors. Babe started to talk alone and laugh
even if there is nothing to be laughed at. He also takes a stroll alone not knowing where
he was going. The most astounding part is that he cannot remember any of his family
members. He just passes by at them without even greeting. That started to prompt his
parents to check what’s wrong with their son. They first referred Babe to binisaya style
of treatment because they thought that maybe their son was possessed or punished by an
evil spirit. Then Piglet met the nurse at their health center who referred him to let Babe
be admitted at Davao Medical Center.
Two months after, the attending physician referred Babe to be admitted at New
Day Recovery Center under the Adopt a Patient program. Piglet cannot recall what
month and year Babe was discharged from NDRC. But after his discharge Babe went to
school at St. Alban’s but he forgot to take his medicines for about a week. This then
triggered the return of his unusual behaviors. There was a time when Babe went to SM
the guards did not let him in because of the unusual behavior they noticed. However, he
still found a way to pass through. When the guards tried to seize him at that time, he
was already in the shoe department trying to fit a pair of shoes. He resisted and hit one
of the guards on the chest. The guards beat him up and Babe ended up in jail. This
incident prompted the family to re-admit Babe for the second time at NDRC on
February of 2008.

When Babe was discharged at NDRC, back home, he was beginning to get out
of the house even if it was already late. He started to hang out with their neighbors that
were considered by Piglet as bad influences. Then, he engaged in vices like cigarette
smoking and liquor drinking. He also became fond of videoke. The thing that prompted
Piglet to re-admit Babe, on November of 2008, for the third time was when she asked
Babe to clean the refrigerator and then Babe snapped and suddenly banged the fridge’s
door. Piglet said that she was shocked and that their fridge was totally wrecked.
