finished on the third day of the hmonth of Adar,
in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king.
16 And the people of Israel, the priests and the
Levites, and the rest of the returned exiles, celebrated the idedication of this house of God with
joy. 17They offered at the dedication of this house
of God 100 bulls, 200 rams, 400 lambs, and as a

DID YOU KNOW?

How long did it take to rebuild the temple?
The Jews returning from exile faced many obstacles
in rebuilding the temple. The non-Jewish people
now living in the land resisted their efforts, and
the returned exiles often lacked the motivation to
work. The temple took 20 years to complete, and it
fell far short of the grandeur of Solomons temple.
6:4 Using three layers of great stones and one layer of timber
follows the construction of the older temple (1 Kings 6:36; 7:12).
While the original decree had required people in Babylon to help pay
forthe project (Ezra 1:4), this record requires that the cost be met
from the royal treasury.
6:7 Governor of the Jews refers to Zerubbabel (compare Hag. 1:1).
What became of the first governor, Sheshbazzar, is not known.
6:810 Darius confirms Cyruss decree and also provides for costs
from taxes raised in the province Beyond the River itself (v.8). He

behind events. But the actions of the Persian kings on behalf of the
Jews are also acknowledged.

for seven days (see Lev.23:56). Participating are the people of
Israel and the people of the land who had joined them (see note on

Assyrians, so he could be called king of Assyria.
6:21 Remarkably, the returning Jews are joined by every one who
had ... separated himself from the uncleanness of the peoples of
the land to worship the LORD. The community was based on faith
rather than on ancestry. Non-Israelites who expressed faith in God
and a willingness to follow his law were welcome.

PROFILE: EZRA
Ezra is described as a man learned in matters of
the commandments of the LORD and his statutes
for Israel (7:11). Both a priest and scribe, Ezra
was commissioned by King Artaxerxes of Persia to
establish the Law of Moses in Jerusalem. The king
also gave him money from the royal treasury to
beautify the temple. Arriving in Jerusalem 57 years
after the temple was rebuilt, Ezra appointed judges
to administer the law. Seventy years of Babylonian
exile had had a negative effect on the peoples
relationship with the Lord. The Lord enabled Ezra
to guide Israel as they sought once again to live
according to the law.

HERODS TEMPLE IN THE TIME OF JESUS

Herod began construction of this magnificent temple in 20/19 B.C.,
during the 18th year of his reign. The main construction phase was
completed within about a decade. Detailed descriptions of the
temple exist in Josephus ("Jewish Antiquities 15.380425; Jewish War
Illustrations 5.184247) and in early rabbinic writings (esp. Mishnah, Middot). The
Roman army under Titus destroyed the temple during the capture of

There was an upper chamber above the

The inner sanctuary was

surrounded on three
sides by three stories of
chambers, containing 38
cells that housed
supplies and vessels for
the ritual ceremonies.

The high priest entered the Most

Holy Place once a year, on the
Day of Atonement, to offer
incense and sprinkle blood.
Josephus reports that this room
was empty, although the original
emplacement of the Ark of the
Covenant in the Foundation
Stone was still visible.

The Holy Place contained the

MAP: THE NEAR EAST AT THE TIME OF GENESIS

Traditionally, Moses is believed to have been the author of Genesis and the rest of the Pentateuch (see Num. 33:2;
Deut. 31:24; John 5:46). Of course, Moses lived several centuries later than the events of Genesis. Presumably,
stories were passed on about those earlier events.
The first audience would have been the Israelites Moses led through the wilderness. For readers today, Genesis
is an essential introduction to the rest of the Bible.

THEME
The theme of Genesis is creation, sin, and re-creation. God created the world as very good, but it was destroyed
in the flood as a result of mans disobedience. The new world after the flood was also spoiled by human sin (ch.11).
God chose Abraham for a special purpose. Through his family, all nations would be blessed (12:13). Gods purpose
will eventually be fulfilled through Abrahams descendants (ch. 49).

then begins tracing the history of one family that will become the people of Israel. This family has a special
relationship with God and will become a source of blessing to fallen humanity (12:13).

The book of Genesis describes
events in the ancient Near East

4. As a result of Adams disobedience, his unique relationship with the ground degenerates, resulting in hard work
and even flood and famine. But the special family descending from Adam also brings relief from the difficulties
(3:1719; 5:29; 50:1921).
5. While Eves punishment centers on pain in bearing children (3:16), women play an essential role in continuing
the unique family line. With Gods help, even barrenness is overcome (11:30; 21:17;
25:21; 38:130).

his chosen people and promises them a land of their own (12:12, 7; 15:721; 28:1314; 50:24).
8. God is prepared to destroy almost the entire human race because of its corruption (6:7, 1112; 18:1733), but

THE SETTING OF MARK

+HURGWKH*UHDW

The events in the book of Mark take

place almost entirely within Palestine,
from Caesarea Philippi in the north
to Beersheba in the south. During
this time Palestine was ruled by the
Roman Empire. The book opens
with Jesus baptism by John during
the rule of Pontius Pilate and the
tetrarchs Antipas and Philip. It closes
with Jesus death and resurrection
about three years later.

Jesus Begins His Ministry
14cNow after John was arrested, Jesus dcame into
Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15and saying, eThe time is fulfilled, and fthe kingdom of
God is at hand; grepent and believe in the gospel.
Jesus Calls the First Disciples
16 hPassing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw
Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting
a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17And
Jesus said to them, Follow me, and I will make
you become ifishers of men.1 18And immediately
they left their nets and followed him. 19And going
on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee
and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 And immediately he called them,
and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with
the hired servants and followed him.
Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Spirit
21jAnd they went into Capernaum, and immediately kon the Sabbath lhe entered the synagogue
and was teaching. 22And mthey were astonished at
his teaching, mfor he taught them as one who had
authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an

you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you
come to destroy us? oI know who you arepthe
Holy One of God. 25But Jesus qrebuked him, saying, Be silent, and come out of him! 26 And the
unclean spirit, rconvulsing him and scrying out
with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they
were all tamazed, so that they questioned among
themselves, saying, What is this? uA new teaching
with authority! He commands even the unclean
spirits, and they obey him. 28And at once his fame
spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding
region of Galilee.
Jesus Heals Many
29 vAnd immediately he 2 w left the synagogue
and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with
James and John. 30 Now xSimons mother-in-law
lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him
about her. 31 And he came and ytook her by the
hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and
she began to serve them.
32That evening at sundown they brought to him
all who were sick or 6oppressed by demons. 33And
the whole city was gathered together at the door.
34 aAnd he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And bhe
would not permit the demons to speak, because
they knew him.

Jesus Preaches in Galilee
35 cAnd rising very early in the morning, while
it was still dark, he departed and went out to a
desolate place, and dthere he prayed. 36And Simon
and those who were with him searched for him,
37and they found him and said to him, eEveryone
is looking for you. 38And he said to them, Let us
go on to the next towns, that I may preach there
also, for fthat is why I came out. 39gAnd hhe went
throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.
Jesus Cleanses a Leper
40 iAnd a leper 1 came to him, imploring him,
and jkneeling said to him, kIf you will, you can
make me clean. 41 Moved with pity, he stretched
out his hand and touched him and said to him, I
will; be clean. 42And immediately the leprosy left
him, and he was made clean. 43And lJesus2 sternly
charged him and sent him away at once, 44 and
said to him, mSee that you say nothing to anyone, but go, nshow yourself to the priest and ooffer
for your cleansing what Moses commanded, pfor
a proof to them. 45 qBut he went out and began
to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so
that Jesus could no longer openly enter ra town,
but was out in rdesolate places, and speople were
coming to him from every quarter.
Jesus Heals a Paralytic
And when he returned to tCapernaum after
some days, it was reported that he was at
home. 2And many were gathered together, so that

there was no more room, not even at the door.

And he was preaching the word to them. 3 uAnd
they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried
by four men. 4And when they could not get near
him because of the crowd, vthey removed the roof
above him, and when they had made an opening,
they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay.
5 And when Jesus wsaw their faith, he said to the
paralytic, Son, xyour sins are forgiven. 6 Now
some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7Why does this man speak like
that? yHe is blaspheming! 6Who can forgive sins
but God alone? 8And immediately Jesus, aperceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within
themselves, said to them, Why do you question
these things in your hearts? 9Which is easier, to say
to the paralytic, Your sins are forgiven, or to say,
Rise, take up your bed and walk? 10But that you
may know that bthe Son of Man has authority on
earth to forgive sinshe said to the paralytic 11I
say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.
12 And he rose and immediately picked up his bed
and went out before them all, so that they were all
amazed and cglorified God, saying, We never saw
anything like this!
Jesus Calls Levi

crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching
them. 14eAnd as he passed by, he saw fLevi the son
of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to
him, Follow me. And he rose and followed him.

19 And Jesus said to them, n Can the wedding
guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?
As long as they have the bridegroom with them,
they cannot fast. 20oThe days will come when the
bridegroom is taken away from them, and pthen
they will fast in that day. 21No one sews a piece of
unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the
patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and
a worse tear is made. 22And no one puts new wine
into old qwineskins. If he does, the wine will burst
the skinsand the wine is destroyed, and so are
the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.3
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
23 r One Sabbath he was going through the

David did, when he was in need and was hungry,
he and those who were with him: 26how he entered
the house of God, in the time of4 xAbiathar the high

it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and
also gave it to those who were with him? 27 And

A Man with a Withered Hand
c
Again dhe entered the synagogue, and a man
was there with a withered hand. 2And ethey
watched Jesus,5 to see whether he would heal him
on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him.
3 And he said to the man with the withered hand,
Come here. 4 And he said to them, fIs it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to
save life or to kill? But they were silent. 5 And
he glooked around at them with anger, grieved
at htheir hardness of heart, and said to the man,
Stretch out your hand. iHe stretched it out, and
his hand was restored. 6 jThe Pharisees went out
and immediately jheld counsel with kthe Herodians
against him, how to destroy him.

said to them in parables, How can Satan cast out

against itself, that house will not be able to stand.
26And if Satan has risen up against himself and is
divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end.
27But mno one can enter a strong mans house and
plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong
man. nThen indeed he may plunder his house.
28 oTruly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven

The Parable of the Sower

Again v he began to teach beside the sea. And
a very large crowd gathered about him, wso
that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea,
and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the
land. 2 And xhe was teaching them many things
in parables, and in his teaching he said to them:
3Listen! Behold, ya sower went out to sow. 4And
as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and
the birds came and devoured it. 5Other seed fell on
rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and
immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of
soil. 6 And 6when the sun rose, it was scorched,
and since it had no root, ait withered away. 7Other
seed fell among bthorns, and the thorns grew up
and choked it, and it yielded no grain. 8And other
seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and
sixtyfold and ca hundredfold. 9And he said, dHe
who has ears to hear, let him hear.

The Purpose of the Parables

10 And ewhen he was alone, those around him
with the twelve asked him about the parables.
11 And he said to them, f To you has been given
g
h
the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those
outside everything is in parables, 12iso that

they jmay indeed see but not perceive,

and may indeed hear but not
understand,
lest they kshould turn and be forgiven.
1 Or

13 lAnd he said to them, Do you not understand

this parable? How then will you understand all
the parables? 14 m The sower sows n the word.
15 And these are the ones along the path, where
the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is
sown in them. 16 And these are the ones sown
on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear
the word, immediately receive it owith joy. 17And
they have no root in themselves, but pendure for
a while; then, when tribulation or persecution
arises on account of the word, immediately qthey
fall away.1 18And others are the ones sown among
thorns. They are those who hear the word, 19 but
r
s
t
the cares of the world and the deceitfulness
of riches and the desires for other things enter
in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 20 But those that were sown on the good soil
are the ones who hear the word and accept it
and ubear fruit, vthirtyfold and sixtyfold and a

he has will be taken away.
The Parable of the Seed Growing
26 And he said, c The kingdom of God is as if
a man should scatter seed on the ground. 27 He
sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed
sprouts and grows; d he knows not how. 28 The
earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the
ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 But when
the grain is ripe, at once ehe puts in the sickle,
because the harvest has come.
The Parable of the Mustard Seed
30 fAnd he said, With what can we compare
the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use
for it? 31It is like ga grain of mustard seed, which,
when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all
the seeds on earth, 32yet when it is sown it grows
up and becomes larger than all the garden plants
and puts out large branches, so that the birds of
the air can make nests in its shade.
33hWith many such parables he spoke ithe word
to them, jas they were able to hear it. 34He did not
speak to them kwithout a parable, but lprivately to
his own disciples he mexplained everything.
Jesus Calms a Storm
35 n On that day, when evening had come, he
said to them, Let us go across to the other side.
36And leaving the crowd, they took him with them
in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were
with him. 37And a great windstorm arose, and the
waves owere breaking into the boat, so that the
boat was already filling. 38But he was in the stern,

said to him, Teacher, do you not care that we are

the wind ceased, and qthere was a great calm.
40He said to them, Why are you rso afraid? Have
you still no faith? 41 And they were filled with
great fear and said to one another, sWho then is
this, that even tthe wind and the sea obey him?
Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon
u
They came to the other side of the sea, to the
country of the Gerasenes.1 2And when Jesus2
had stepped out of the boat, immediately there
met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean
spirit. 3 vHe lived among the tombs. And no one
could bind him anymore, not even with a chain,
4 for he had often been bound with shackles and
chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and
he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the
strength to subdue him. 5Night and day among the
tombs and on the mountains he was always crying
out and cutting himself with stones. 6And when he
saw Jesus from afar, he ran and wfell down before
him. 7And xcrying out with a loud voice, he said,
What have you to do with me, Jesus, ySon of 6the
Most High God? aI adjure you by God, do not torment me. 8For he was saying to him, Come out

who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the

to the other side, a great crowd gathered about
him, and he was beside the sea. 22hThen came one

and seeing him, he fell at his feet 23and implored

so that she may be made well and live. 24And he

And a great crowd followed him and kthronged
about him. 25 And there was a woman lwho had

who had suffered much under many physicians,
and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard the

the crowd and touched his garment. 28 For she
said, If I touch even his garments, I will be made
well. 29mAnd immediately the flow of blood dried
up, and she felt in her body that she was healed

The Death of John the Baptist
14wKing Herod heard of it, for Jesus1 name had
become known. Some2 said, xJohn the Baptist3
has been raised from the dead. That is why these
miraculous powers are at work in him. 15 xBut
others said, He is Elijah. And others said, He is
y
a prophet, like one of the prophets of old. 16But
when Herod heard of it, he said, John, whom I
beheaded, has been raised. 17 6For it was Herod
who had sent and seized John and abound him
in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother
Philips wife, because he had married her. 18 6For
John had been saying to Herod, bIt is not lawful for you to have your brothers wife. 19 And
Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to
put him to death. But she could not, 20 for Herod
c
feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and
holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard
him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he dheard
him gladly.
21 But an opportunity came when Herod eon his
birthday fgave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.
22 For when Herodiass daughter came in and
danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And
the king said to the girl, Ask me for whatever you

wish, and I will give it to you. 23And he vowed to

her, Whatever you ask me, I will give you, gup to
half of my kingdom. 24And she went out and said
to her mother, For what should I ask? Andshe
said, The head of John the Baptist. 25 And she
came in immediately with haste to the king and
asked, saying, I want you to give me at once the
head of John the Baptist on a platter. 26 And the
king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his
oaths and his guests he did not want to break
his word to her. 27 And immediately the king sent
an executioner with orders to bring Johns4 head.
He went and beheaded him in the prison 28 and
brought his head on a platter and gave it to the
girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. 29When his
h
disciples heard of it, they came and took his body
and laid it in a tomb.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
30%jThe apostles returned to Jesus and told him
all that they had done and taught. 31 And he said
to them, Come away by yourselves to a desolate
place and rest a while. For many were coming and
going, and kthey had no leisure even to eat. 32lAnd
they went away in mthe boat to a desolate place
by themselves. 33 Now many saw them going and
n
recognized them, and they ran there on foot from
all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34When
he went ashore he osaw a great crowd, and ohe had
compassion on them, because they were like sheep
without a shepherd. And he began to teach them
many things. 35And when it grew late, his disciples
came to him and said, This is a desolate place,

Now when the Pharisees gathered to him,
with some of the scribes qwho had come from

What Defiles a Person

14 And he called the people to him again and
said to them, eHear me, all of you, and understand: 15 fThere is nothing outside a person that
by going into him can defile him, but the things
that come out of a person are what defile him.2
17 And when he had entered g the house and left
the people, h his disciples asked him about the

also without understanding? Do you not see that

whatever goes into a person from outside cannot
defile him, 19 since it enters not his heart jbut his
stomach, and is expelled?3 (kThus he declared all
foods clean.) 20And he said, lWhat comes out of a

Jesus Heals a Deaf Man
31 a Then he returned from the region of Tyre
and went through Sidon to bthe Sea of Galilee, in
the region of the cDecapolis. 32 And they brought
to him da man who was deaf and dhad a speech

his ears were opened, his tongue was released,

were kastonished beyond measure, saying, He

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand
l
In those days, when again a great crowd had
gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he
called his disciples to him and said to them, 2mI
have compassion on the crowd, because they have
been with me now three days and have nothing
to eat. 3 And if I send them away hungry to their
homes, they will faint on the way. And some of
them have come from far away. 4And his disciples
answered him, How can one feed these people
with bread here in this desolate place? 5And he
asked them, How many loaves do you have?
They said, nSeven. 6And he directed the crowd
to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven
loaves, and ohaving given thanks, he broke them
and gave them to his disciples to set before the
people; and they set them before the crowd. 7And

And he sent them away. 10And immediately he got

Teaching About Divorce
6
And he left there and went ato the region of
Judea and beyond the Jordan, and crowds
gathered to him again. And again, as was his custom, he taught them.
2 And Pharisees came up and in order b to test
him asked, cIs it lawful for a man to divorce his
wife? 3He answered them, What did Moses command you? 4They said, dMoses allowed a man to
write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.
5 And Jesus said to them, Because of your ehardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.

leave his father and mother and hold fast to his
wife,4 8 and ithe two shall become one flesh. So
they are no longer two but one flesh. 9jWhat therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.
10And in the house the disciples asked him again
about this matter. 11And he said to them, kWhoever
divorces his wife and marries another commits
adultery against her, 12and lif she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.
Let the Children Come to Me
13 mAnd they were bringing children to him that
he might touch them, and the disciples nrebuked
them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant
and said to them, oLet the children come to me;

do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 15 qTruly, I say to you, whoever does
not rreceive the kingdom of God like a child shall
not enter it. 16And she took them in his arms and
blessed them, t laying his hands on them.

The Authority of Jesus Challenged
27vAnd they came again to Jerusalem. And as he
was walking in the temple, the chief priests and
the scribes and the elders came to him, 28and they
said to him, wBy what authority are you doing
these things, or who gave you this authority to do
them? 29 Jesus said to them, I will ask you one
question; answer me, and I will tell you by what
authority I do these things. 30 Was the baptism of
John x from heaven or from man? Answer me.
31 And they discussed it with one another, saying,
If we say, From heaven, he will say, yWhy then
did you not believe him? 32But shall we say, From
man?6they were afraid of the people, for they
all held that John really was aa prophet. 33So they
answered Jesus, We do not know. And Jesus said
to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority
I do these things.
The Parable of the Tenants
b
And he began to speak to them in parables.
A man planted ca vineyard dand put a fence
around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built
a tower, and eleased it to tenants and fwent into
another country. 2When the season came, he sent
a servant1 to the tenants to get from them some
of the fruit of the vineyard. 3 gAnd they took him
and beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
4 g Again h he sent to them another servant, and

they struck him on the head and treated him

killed. And so with many others: some they beat,
and some they killed. 6 He had still one other, ka
beloved son. lFinally he sent him to them, saying,
They will respect my son. 7But those tenants said
to one another, mThis is the heir. Come, nlet us kill
him, and the inheritance will be ours. 8And they
took him and killed him and othrew him out of the

The Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection
18 And kSadducees came to him, lwho say that
there is no resurrection. And they asked him a
question, saying, 19 Teacher, Moses wrote for us
that mif a mans brother dies and leaves a wife,
but leaves no child, the man3 must take the widow
and raise up offspring for his brother. 20There were
seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he
died left no offspring. 21 And the second took her,
and died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. 22And the seven left no offspring. Last of all
the woman also died. 23In the resurrection, when
they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the
seven had her as wife.
24 Jesus said to them, Is this not the reason
you are wrong, because n you know neither the
Scriptures nor othe power of God? 25For when they
rise from the dead, they neither pmarry nor pare

the living. You are quite wrong.
The Great Commandment
28 uAnd one of the scribes came up and heard
them disputing with one another, and seeing that
he answered them well, asked him, Which commandment is the most important of all? 29 Jesus
answered, The most important is, vHear, O Israel:
The Lord our God, wthe Lord is one. 30 And you
shall love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your mind and
with all your strength. 31xThe second is this: yYou
shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no
other commandment 6greater than these. 32 And
the scribe said to him, You are right, Teacher.
You have truly said that w he is one, and athere
is no other besides him. 33 And to love him with
all the heart and with all bthe understanding and
with all the strength, and to love ones neighbor
as oneself, cis much more than all dwhole burnt
offerings and sacrifices. 34 And when Jesus saw
that he answered wisely, he said to him, You are
not far from the kingdom of God. eAnd after that
no one dared to ask him any more questions.

The Plot to Kill Jesus

x
y
It was now two days before the Passover
and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the
chief priests and the scribes 6were seeking how to
arrest him by stealth and kill him, 2 for they said,
Not during the feast, alest there be an uproar from
the people.

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

3 bAnd while he was at c Bethany in the house
of Simon the leper,1 as he was reclining at table, a
woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment
of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask
and poured it over his head. 4 There were some
who said to themselves indignantly, Why was
the ointment wasted like that? 5For this ointment
could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii2 and dgiven to the poor. And they
e
scolded her. 6 But Jesus said, Leave her alone.
Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 For fyou always have the poor
with you, and whenever gyou want, you can do
good for them. But hyou will not always have me.

Judas to Betray Jesus
10 m Then n Judas Iscariot, who was one of the
twelve, nwent to the chief priests in order to betray
him to them. 11And when they heard it, they were
glad and promised to give him money. And he
sought an opportunity to obetray him.
The Passover with the Disciples
12 pAnd on qthe first day of Unleavened Bread,
when they rsacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, Where will you have us go and
prepare for you to eat the Passover? 13And he sent
s
two of his disciples and said to them, Go into the
city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet
you. Follow him, 14and wherever he enters, say to
the master of the house, tThe Teacher says, Where
is umy guest room, where I may eat the Passover
with my disciples? 15And he will show you va large
upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for
us. 16And the disciples set out and went to the city
and found it just as he had told them, and they
prepared the Passover.

And after a little while the bystanders again said

he answered them, saying, Do you want me to

perceived that pit was out of envy that the chief

Releasing prisoners (15:6) was apparently a

had turned Jesus over to him because they felt

gave in to the crowds and handed Jesus over to
be crucified.

SOLOMONS TEMPLE
Solomon began to build the house of the LORD in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah in the spring of 967
or 966 B.C. (1Kings 6:1; 2Chron. 3:12) and completed it seven years later, in the fall of 960 or 959
(1Kings 6:38). The temple itself, not including the surrounding chambers on three sides, was 90 feet
(27 m) long, 30 feet (9 m) wide, and 45 feet (14 m) high. It stood in the middle of a court with
boundary walls.

A structure with three levels was built

around the walls of the temple. The lower
chamber was 7.5 feet (2.3 m) wide, the
middle chamber was 9 feet (2.7m) wide,
and the upper chamber was 10.5 feet
(3.2m) wide (1Kings 6:56, 8, 10).

Two ornate wooden doors, overlaid with

gold, separated the inner sanctuary from
the nave (1Kings 6:3132).

The nave had clerestory

windows with recessed
frames (1Kings 6:4).

The inner sanctuary (or Most Holy Place) was a 30-foot

(9.1-m) cube (1Kings 6:1529; 2Chron. 3:814). Such
rooms were often elevated in temples of the ancient
Near East. Two massive golden cherubim stood on
either side of the ark, each 15 feet (4.6 m) tall with
15-foot (4.6-m) wingspans (1Kings 6:2328). The ark of
the covenant stood between the two cherubim (1Kings
8:111; compare2Chron. 5:214).

Ten bronze wheeled stands, each holding a large basin, contained water for rinsing off
the animal parts that were used for the burnt offerings (1Kings 7:2738;
compare2Chron. 4:6).

The sea was a metal basin 7.5 feet (2.3 m) high and 15

The Gate of the Essenes allowed the Essenes to

access latrines outside the city walls in accordance
with their strict laws of hygiene.
Herods Palace was the Jerusalem home of Herod
the Great from 23 to 4 B.C. Pilate, who normally
resided in Caesarea Maritima, resided in this palace
during his visits to Jerusalem, including his visit for
the Passover preceding Christs crucifixion.
The Praetorium was in Herods Palace (Matt.27:27;
Mark 15:16), which served as Pilates official
headquarters and as a fortress. A raised stone
pavement, used for official judgments, stood
outside the palace and was the site of Jesus
condemnation under Pilate (John 19:13).
Herod the Great fortified three towers to protect his
palace: from west to east there was the Tower of
Hippicus (155 feet#/47 m tall), the Tower of Phasael
(138 feet#/42 m tall), and the Tower of Mariamne (95
feet#/29 m tall).

The two-level Palatial Mansion (6,500 sq. feet#/604

sq. m) may have been the Palace of Annas, who
served as high priest from A.D. 6 to 15. Annass son-inlaw Caiaphas held this office from A.D.18 to 36 and
presided at the trial of Jesus (Matt. 26:57).
8 This is often considered the most likely location of
Golgotha, the place of Jesus death. It was on a hill
overlooking a quarry, outside the Second Wall of the
city and near the Gennath (Garden) Gate.
9 Herod the Great lived in the luxurious Hasmonean
Palace from the mid-30s to 23 B.C. while awaiting the
building of his own new palace. Herod Antipas
(Herod the Tetrarch) lived in this palace during his
reign, 4 B.C.A.D. 39. Jesus appeared before him here
in either A.D. 30 or 33.

10 The Archives building contained the public
registers (including genealogies) as well as
bonds taken by money-lenders, which allowed
the recovery of debts.
11 The Xystus, built on the site of the former Greek
Gymnasium, was a place of mass assembly.
12 The Council House was a public building,
perhaps functioning as a municipal office.
13 The Temple was reconstructed by Herod the
Great, beginning in 20/19B.C.
14 The Bethesda Pools (see John 5:2) were twin
pools, each measuring c.312 by 164196 feet (95
by 5060 m), and c.50 feet (15 m) deep. A
small Roman temple dedicated to Aesculapius
stood to the east of the pools.

15 The Garden of Gethsemane was located

approximately 300 yards (274 m) from
Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. The Mount of
Olives was a Sabbath days journey away from
Jerusalem (Acts 1:12), approximately 1,100 yards,
or 3/5 of a mile.
16 The ravine of the Kidron Valley has always served
as Jerusalems eastern boundary.
17 The Pool of Siloam (cf.John 9:7), a focal point
of Jerusalem, adjoined a large dam and
reservoir, and received water from the Gihon
Spring.
18 The Hinnom Valley was to the south of the hill
that was the original city of David.
19 The Upper City housed luxurious villas of wealthy
residents in the Herodian period.

JERUSALEM IN THE TIME OF JESUS

The heavily fortified city of Jerusalem lay atop adjacent hills in the mountainous region of Judea. It therefore
proved difficult even for the Romans to recapture during the Jewish revolt, although they eventually did so in
A.D. 70 after a bitter siege. The oldest portion of Jerusalem, called thecity of David and Mount Zion, lay to
the south of the temple, but the city walls in the first century also encompassed the newer Upper City to the
west of the temple. To the east, across the Kidron Valley (John 18:1), stood the Mount of Olives (Mark 13:3). To
the south of Zion lay the Hinnom Valley. The reconstruction above depicts Jerusalem around A.D. 30, and the
general direction of the drawing is looking north.
