Whatdobananas,thetallestgravityfedfountaininthe
world,andtheCrystalPalacehaveincommon?
TheywereallcreatedbyJosephPaxton,thenoted19th
centurygardenerofChatsworthHouse.The150th
anniversaryofhisdeathiscommemoratedbythisyears
DerbyCityCharterBeerFestival.
AlthoughPaxtonwasnotanativeofDerby,mostofhiswork
andhiscleverinventionswerecarriedoutwhilehewas
employedbythe6thDukeofDevonshiretodevelopthe
gardensatChatsworth.
Paxtonwasbornin1803toahumblefarmingfamilyin
Bedfordshireandstartedhisworkinglifeasagardenboyfor
theimprobablynamedSirGregoryPageTurner.Hefirst
cametotheattentionoftheDukeofDevonshirewhile
workingatthenewHorticulturalSocietyGardensin
Chiswick.InneedofanewheadgardeneratChatsworth,
theDukeofferedPaxtonthejob,althoughhewasonly23.
Paxtonsoonsettledinmarryingthehousekeepersniece,
SarahBrownandbecameheavilyinvolvedinmorethanjust
thegarden.Hetookoverresponsibilityfortheforestry,the
estateroadsandeventuallyhetookontheroleofthe
DukesagentatChatsworth.Hewasaningeniousproblem
solveranddesigner.In1844,hecreatedtheworldshighest
gravityfedfountain,TheEmperorFountainatChatsworth,
standingtwiceastallasNelsonsColumnandstill
operationaltoday.Onobservingthestructureofagiant
waterlilyherealisedthattheradialsupportsunderneath

JOSEPHPAXTON(1803 1865)
gavetheleafthestrengthtogrowtoanenormoussize.He
testeditsloadbearingqualitybysittinghisyoungdaughter
ontop.Thisgavehimtheideaofusingacastironradial
structuretosupporttheglassforanoversizedgreenhouse.
ThegreatconservatoryatChatsworthwasthefirstcastiron
andglassbuildingofanimpressivesize.Withcontinued
experimentation,Paxtonperfectedhisironandglass
constructionmethodinhisdesignfortheCrystalPalacein
LondonfortheGreatExhibitionof1851.
WhilestillworkingfortheDuke,Paxtondevelopedan
interestinthemodernformoftransportofthetime,the
train.HebecameoneofthedirectorsoftheMidland
RailwayinDerbyin1848.Asifthatwasnotenough,he
publishedandeditedseveralhorticulturalmagazines.He
designedcemeteriesforthenewlydevelopingurban
centresandplannedpublicparksforusebytheinhabitants
ofgrowingtowns,includingtheacclaimedBirkenhead
PublicPark.Somehow,healsomanagedtofindthetimeto
serveasaLiberalMPforCoventryfrom1854untilhisdeath
in1865.
Andthebananas?Beinganotoriouslydifficultfruitto
propagate,Paxtonworkedhardtodevelopafruiting
variety,MusaCavendishiiorthedwarfCavendishbanana,
whichwashardyandsuitableforgrowinginnewly
developingplantationsaroundtheworld.Todaythe140
millionbananaseatenintheUKandallthemillionsofother
bananasgrownworldwidearelikelytobedescendedfrom
Paxtonsoriginalplant.

somethingthatsnotentirelytoyourtasteandbe
wonderingwhatthefussisallabout.
Thatstheproblemwithchoice.Thereisahugerangeof
tastesinrealales,farmorethaninwines,andyoumayfind
onethatsnotforyou.Mostrealaledrinkershavea
preferenceforaparticularstyleofbeer.
Stickwithit.Thebeerdescriptionsinthisprogrammewill
giveyouaclueastowhatyoumightlike.Thebarstaffmay
beabletoadviseonthebeersintheirsection.Remember
thatstrongestdoesnotmeanbestmanyrealaledrinkers
prefertostartontheweakerbrews.
Onceyouhavefoundsomethingthatyouaregettingon
with,lookforbeerswithsimilardescriptions;hopefullyyou
willsoonhituponyourpersonalcracker.
Butwhatisrealale?Simplyitisbeerfromwhichairisnot
excludedbycarbondioxideorothergasses,andwhichcan
matureinthecask.Forthisreasonitsflavourcanbe
broughttoahigherlevelbytheskillofthecellarperson.
Unfortunately,itsflavourcanberuinedbylackofcare.If
yougetabadpint,takeitback,mostgoodpubsandthis
festivalwonthesitatetoofferareplacement.
Kegbeerispasteurisedandcannotmatureinthecellar,is
noticeablygassier,andisusuallyservedmuchcolder(often
tomasktheflavour,orlackofit).
HowdoIknow?Unlessitisservedstraightfromthecask,
lookforthesymbolofrealale,thehandpump.Iftheperson
behindthebarisdoingnomorethanflippingoveralittle
tap,itsveryprobablynotrealale(electricpumpdispense
maybefoundinScotland,butisbecominguncommon).
RealAleisgenerallyonlyavailableinpubs.Itswhatmakes
somepubsreallyspecial.Youcanfindrealalepubswiththe
otherfacilitiesandfeaturesyouwantusingtheCAMRA

CHOOSINGABEERANDBEERSTYLES
Thisyearwehavesourcedanotherfantasticrangeofales,witha
focusonbeersfromScottishbreweries.Manyofthesebeersare
normallyverydifficult,ifnotimpossible,tofindintheDerbyarea.
Youwillalsofindagoodrangeofbeersfromlocalbreweries,and
someunusualbeersfromelsewhereintheUnitedKingdom.
Withover150beerstochoosefromyoucouldgetconfused,but
findingabeeryoulikeispartofthefunofabeerfestival.The
rangeincludesfruity,hoppy,floral,andtoffeenotes,sobrowse
around.Eachbeerhasanindividualcharactercomingfromthe
varietyofhops,malt,andevenwaterused.
Usethebeerlistdescriptionasaguideandifyourestillnotsure
aboutabeer,justaskthebarstafftogiveyouataste.Ingeneralit
isbesttoworkupfromweakerbeerstothestrongerbrews.Beer
strengthismeasuredasapercentageofthealcoholbyvolume
(ABV).Aguidetothemostcommonlyfoundbeerstylesisgiven
below;thelettersinbracketsshowthetypeofbeerinthe
programme.
Pleasenotethatintheinterestsofresponsibledrinking,beers
withanABVofover6.5%willnotbeservedinpintmeasures.
Bitter(B)orBestBitter(BB)
Modernbittersareacommercialversionoftheexportpaleor
IndiaPaleAles(seebelow).Theyrangefrom3.5to5.5%ABV.The
bitternessstemsfromtheirhighhoprate.Insomecasestheyare
alsodryhopped(wherehopsareaddedtoacaskimmediately
priortodelivery).Theyaregenerallycoppercolouredduetothe
useofpalemaltsbuttherehasbeenarecenttrendforlighteror
goldenbeers(q.v.),especiallyforthesummertrade.Thesetend
tobelightintastewithafresh,cleanpalate.IndiaPaleAles(IPA)
areclassicallystronger(circa5.5%ABV)andwellhopped(e.g.
WorthingtonWhiteShield).
GoldenAles(G)
Thisnewstyleofpale,wellhoppedandthirstquenchingbeer
developedinthe1980sasindependentbrewersattemptedtowin
youngerdrinkersfromlagerbrands.Mostmicrosandregionals
nowmaketheirownversionsofthestyle.Goldenalesarepale
amber,gold,yelloworstrawcolouredandareservedcool.
Strengthsrangefrom3.5to5.5%.Theyhaveabiscuitycharacter
derivedfrompalemalts,withhopsgivingatartcitrusfruitand
pepperfinish,oftenwithhintsofvanillaandcornflour.

CHOOSINGABEERANDBEERSTYLES
MildAles(M)
ItisamisconceptionthatMildalesmustbeweakanddark.This
isntso.Thetermmildindicatesalowerhoprate,thealeis
thereforelessbitter,thanBitter.
Modernmildsthoughtendtobelowinalcohol(from3.5%ABV
upwards),aresweeterthanbittersandportersandfarfrom
tasteless.Theyrangeincolourfrompalegold(e.g.TaylorsGolden
Best)toblack.Thecolourcomesfromtheuseofcrystal,brownor
blackmalts;thelattergivingroastmaltandchocolatearomas.
PortersandStouts(ST)
Bothporterandstoutaredark,rich,bitterbeers.Bothusedark
maltstoprovidethecolourbutthestrongesttasting(stoutest),
hencethename,evolvedintoadistinctivestyleofitsown,
smoother,creamierheadandlessbitter.Modernvariationshave
blurredthedifferences.Thecolourrangesfrommidbrowntojet
blackandthegravityfrom4.5to7.0%ABV.Imperial(Russian)
stoutsdevelopedforthatmarketarericher,fruiterandhavea
highergravity(8.0to10.0%ABV).
StrongBeers(SB)
Manystrongbeersareheavyandsweetish,andgettheiralcoholic
strengthfromtheuseofhigherlevelsofbrewingsugar.Usually
6.0%ABVrangeandabove.
WheatBeer(W)
Brewedusingablendofwheatandbarleywithacloudy
appearance.Theyarerefreshinglysharpandslightlyfruity.
Seldombitter,wheatbeersareusuallyfragrantandpale.
SpecialityBeers(SY)
Typicallythesebeerscontainadjunctstothenormalbrewing
ingredientsofbarley,hops,waterandyeast.Fruits,herbsand
spicesallfindtheirwayintosuchbeers.

TheDerbyBranchofCAMRAhasaround
2,500members,makingitoneofthe
largestinthecountry.Thisfestivalis
organizedandrunentirelybyvolunteers
fromtheDerbyandneighbouringbranches.
Wedovirtuallyeverything,fromhiringthemarquees,tochoosingand
orderingthebeers,gettingthemreadytodrink,staffingthebars,hiring
thebands,andcontractingthecatering.Itsamassiveeffort,requiring
about350unpaidvolunteers. 
Whydowedoit?Theanswerissimple,becauseweenjoyit.Derby
CAMRAisasociablebunchofpeople;weenjoythework,weenjoythe
challengeandweenjoytheextendedfriendshipsofworkingtogether.
Andthisappliestoallthemanyandvariedthingswedo.Butwere
alwayslookingformorepeopletojoinin.Peopleofalltypes,
backgroundsandages;theonlyqualificationsarealoveofgreatalesand
ciders,andenthusiasm.
Weneedpeoplewholikemeetingpeople.Peoplewhowillvisitpubs,talk
tolandlords,anddistributeourpublicationsandleaflets.Weneedpeople
withcreativetalents:writing,editing,photography,graphicdesign.We
needpeoplewithpracticalskillstohelpsetupbeerfestivals,plumbin
coolingsystems,buildbars.WeneedITgurusandsocialmediaexperts.
Weneedorganizersandmanagers,peoplewhocanunderstandaccounts
ordevelopmarketingstrategies.
Inshort,wecanprobablyuseanyskill,talentorabilitythatisoffered.If
thereisthereissomethingyouenjoydoing,orsomethingyouthinkyou
wouldliketohaveagoat,pleaseletusknow.Youwontbethrowninat
thedeepend,andyoudonthavetotakeonmoreresponsibilitiesthan
