Biker rides into crowd at parade, injuring 11

A Veterans Day parade in Eastpointe turned calamitous Sunday when a motorcyclist in

the procession barreled into the crowd and injured 11 spectators, some seriously.

Police arrested the driver, a 56-year-old Clinton Township man, who they say was drunk.
He faces drunken-driving charges today. Police withheld his name pending arraignment.

The man was riding with a pack of 50 to 100 motorcyclists at the end of the parade route
at 2:25 p.m. when his Harley-Davidson lurched into a crowd of 50 people cheering and
waiving flags, knocking them over, said Eastpointe Police Chief Michael Lauretti, who
witnessed the crash.

A Cub Scout leader pushed some children out of the way before he was injured.

The 11 injured spectators -- six adults and five children ages 10 to 17 -- were taken to
hospitals. None of the injuries appeared life threatening, though several people suffered
broken bones and internal injuries, Lauretti said. One woman was knocked unconscious.

"It's not what you expect in a parade," Lauretti said. "The motorcyclists are very civic-
and community-oriented, but this guy apparently had too much to drink."

Police said it's unclear why the man drove into the crowd, but said he opened the throttle
and veered off the road.

Biker gang allies ran operations in Macomb, St. Clair

Two members and five associates of the oddly-named Devils' Diciples biker gang will
face prison time for their involvement in a methamphetamine-making operation in
Macomb and St. Clair counties, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Monday.

In what prosecutors called the first major meth case in U.S. District Court in Detroit, the
individuals will serve sentences ranging from 30 to 97 months.

"We're pleased because it just goes to show that methamphetamine is relatively new to
this area and we don't see meth a whole lot. But I think that what this shows is when we
see it, we're going to take action," said U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider, who worked on
the case.

U.S. District Judge Marianne O. Battani sentenced the final defendant, Patricia
Schoeninger, 44, of Algonac, on Monday to 30 months in prison followed by four years
of supervised release. Schoeninger pleaded guilty in June to one count of conspiracy to
manufacture meth.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the biker gang members who were convicted
and sentenced earlier this year are: Michael (Iron Mike) Mastromatteo, 48, of Mt.
Clemens and Gregory (Breakdown) Schoeninger, 45, of Algonac. Their convicted
associates, who were also sentenced in September and October, are: Demetrius (Demi)
Meffer, 38, of Chesterfield Township; Joseph Rottman, 43, of Macomb Township; Tami
Watters, 41, of Gaylord; and Drago Stajninger, 41, of Chesterfield Township.

Gregory Schoeninger and Patricia Schoeninger are married. In March 2005, the FBI,
Michigan State Police and the County of Macomb Enforcement Team conducted
extensive raids at several locations, including the bikers' clubhouse in Mt. Clemens.
Authorities also discovered working meth labs in Harrison and Macomb townships.
Evidence from other searches in New Haven, Algonac and Chesterfield Township
revealed labs had been relocated frequently to avoid detection.
