Household Hazardous
Waste Collection
The Zumbro River Region mobile collection vehicle will
be visiting the City of Pine Island at the
Pine Island High School to collect
household hazardous waste on:

Wednesday, July 15, 2015

3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Only household hazardous wastes can be accepted.
State law prohibits business waste collection
at a household collection.
We will refuse loads from home foreclosure cleanup businesses!
Loads can be rejected at the discretion of the site manager!

Sample wastes that may be brought to the collection

include aerosol cans, old paint, household cleaners, paint
thinners, paint remover, pesticides from the garden or from
the lawn, and court shoes that light up. Fluorescent bulbs
will be accepted from households and from businesses.
Businesses will be charged a small fee for bulbs.

Please note that the collection may be cancelled

due to rain or threatening weather.

Questions?
Call the Hazardous Waste Hotline at
651/385-3107 for more information.

Lady of the Green Ariane Lydon performs at Crossings

ZUMBROTA Ariane Lydon is a startlingly unique musical artist whose poetic songs are inherently
harnessed to sublimely gorgeous and lyrical music. She performs Saturday, July 18, 8 p.m. at Crossings.
Lydons lush and textured alto voice is supported by 6- and 12-string guitars, a Lever Harp as well as
the Bodhran. She will occasionally knock your socks off by playing 12-string and harp simultaneously,
sometimes singing at the same time as well.
In addition to abundantly tasteful music Lydon punctuates her performances with a wry sense of humor
that delivers riotous life stories designed to tickle your funny bone long after the evening has waned. As
Joanie Madden of Cherish The Ladies was prompted to exclaim one evening, when Lydon was asked to
fill in for their lead singer at the Xavier Performing Arts Center, Ariane is a great, sultry singer and a
funny, funny girl who can make 2,000 people roar with laughter.
Her newest release, Listen to Crows dives deep into a pool of World Music sound both anchored to
and buoyed by legitimate and strong ties to the British Isles, Chile and Wisconsin. In this, her third vocal
CD, she masterfully carries the torch of songwriting into musical maturity and lyrical stature while
standing upon the inspirational shoulders of giants such as Simon & Garfunkel, Victor Jara, Sting, June
Tabor and Joni Mitchell.
Since 1997, Lydon has performed largely solo for national and local venues, both in performing arts
centers as well as smaller listening venues, folk festivals and even house concerts. She has toured
throughout the U.S. and performed alongside such greats as Duck Baker, John Gorka, John Renbourn,
Peter Rowan and Loreena MacKennit.
Lydons songs explore universal themes born out of a combination of travels on the Mississippi River
Road, observations from wildlife refuges to cities; and from living abroad extensively in countries such
as England, Chile, Switzerland and France. Coupled with global voyages from Western Europe to the
Andes, South Africa, the U.S., Canada, Alaska and Mexico, Lydons sophisticated music, described by
one critic as real music has percolated through the constancy of chosen life-long surroundings:
Among the attendees at the State Greenhand Leadership Conference are, from left to right: PJ Aarsvold, limestone bluffs and a wholesome river of life in the fertile Driftless region of southwestern Wisconsin,
State FFA President from Plainview-Elgin-Millville FFA; Aricka Roberson, Region VIII FFA President from where she has lived for the better part of 18 years.
Zumbrota-Mazeppa FFA; Mary Poncelet, Goodhue FFA; Travis Troendle, State FFA Treasurer from Lanesboro
Previous CDs include Still She Moves (2004), and Lady of the Green (1997).
FFA; and Madison Taylor, State FFA Reporter from Randolph FFA.
To reserve tickets, visit www.crossingsatcarnegie.com, call 507-732-7616 or stop in to Crossings at

FFA members receive

personal leadership training
HACKENSACK Over 140
Minnesota FFA members gathered
for the State Greenhand Leadership Conference (SGLC) at Deep
Portage Conservation Reserve near
Hackensack from June 22-26 to
develop leadership skills for their
communities and home chapters.
Among the attendees from local
FFA chapters were Courtney
Ellefson of Pine Island, Mary Poncelet of Goodhue, and Aricka
Roberson of Zumbrota-Mazeppa
High School.
The goal of State Greenhand
Leadership Conference is to give
personal mentoring to first-year
high school FFA members. These
members come from all corners
of the state, represent unique sectors of agriculture and have been
recognized as top leaders in their
schools.

During the conference, students

cover an array of topics during
sessions that focus mostly on personal development. Goal setting,
professional leadership and career
exploration are just a few of the
topics discovered during this fiveday leadership camp.
State Greenhand Leadership
Conference was an incredible week
filled with opportunities for students to grow, build friendships
and learn more about FFA, Minnesota FFA President PJ Aarsvold
said. Members took part in engaging sessions, heard from officers as they reflected on lessons
theyve learned through their life
experiences and participated in
team-building activities at Deep
Portages facilities.
FFA members had the opportunity to connect with different in-

dividuals outside of sessions during fun activities such as volleyball, canoeing and hiking. Each
night, the state officers shared
personal reflections with the campers, and the final day wrapped up
camp with a banquet, talent show
and dance.
State Greenhand Leadership
Conference serves the Minnesota
FFA Association by building talented and young individuals. These
members often go on to become
chapter, region and state leaders
within their FFA chapters and
communities.
This leadership conference was
made possible with financial contributions from the CHS Foundation, Northland Ford Dealers, Alliance Pipeline and Dr. Curtis
Youngs as a special project of the
Minnesota FFA Foundation.

Unleash a childs creativity at Crossings summer camps

ZUMBROTA Making art can awaken a childs senses, imagination, creative thinking and problem
solving. And that child will love every minute of it! Experiences in the arts can do all these things, and
Crossings offers summer camps in visual and performing arts, textile arts, pottery and sculptural arts,
helping to unleash childrens creative potential.
At Run with Scissors: Textile Camp, June 13-17, four instructors will teach different methods of
working with fiber, emphasizing fun along the way duck tape is one of the textiles campers work with!
Campers also learn machine and hand sewing, as well as knitting and 3D felting. This camp is for students
entering grades 3-12 and runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
Other upcoming camps include:
Alakazam Youre a Star performance magic camp, July 20-24
Mixed-Up Media, July 20-24
Messy Munchkins preschool art camp, July 20-24
3D 4 5Days, July 27-31
The Thrill of Printmaking, July 27-31
Sculpture Welding 101, July 27-31
Imagine This! The Art of Improv, Aug. 3-14
Musical Theater: The Sound of Music, Aug. 3-14
Children naturally engage in the arts from their earliest days, and the arts bring joy to those who create
it and those with whom art is shared. Art explores not only what now exists, but what once existed and what
has never been. Its a driving force behind innovation, understanding, and community that ignores rules,
transcends barriers of language, geography or time and introduces complex new concepts.
Visit the website at www.crossingsatcarnegie.com for details about individual camp experiences, dates
and prices and our well-qualified instructors, and to register. Or, call or email us to request a brochure.
Scholarships available through the generosity of Zumbrota Community Trust.
Crossings is located at 320 East Avenue in Zumbrota. For questions call (507) 732-7616 or visit our
website at www.crossingsatcarnegie.com. Email us to request a 2015 Summer Camps brochure at:
