METHOD STATEMENT FOR EXCAVATION AND BACKFILLING WORKS

1. SCOPE
This method statement describes procedure for the excavation works as per engineering
drawings.
Description of the contract: Excavation and casting of footing foundations (2000mm deep
excavation).

2. SITE PREPARATION WORKS.

Contractor shall make site visit to ensure that site conditions is permitted to work as
per engineering drawings.

3. WORK BY OTHERS
Prior to any work taking place on site, the client shall:

Provide utility services drawings showing the location of any buried services
Ensure that vehicles routes are carefully planned so that machinery plants and
working yard will not affect traffic flow.

4. WORK ACTIVITY
Pre-start checks: The pre-start checks shall ensure the following areas:Availability of plant and equipment to be used; ground conditions; proximity hazards. Ensure
the excavation area has been checked for overhead and underground services prior to the
commencement of work.

5. SEQUENCE OF WORK OF FOOTING FOUNDATION:

On the particular sites the average depth of excavation is 2.0m. It is proposed to cut
slope gradient to 70 due to site working constraint.
A backhoe will be used to dig 2.0m deep and upload onto lorry the earth debris to
transport out from the site.
After excavation, the mackintosh Probe Test and Plate Bearing Test at founding level
to be carried out by other.
The founding level to be inspected with good formation.
100mm thick hardcore will be laid and compacted.
Following by 50mm thick lean concrete will be laid.

5.1. Formwork
Erect the formwork by providing sufficient props and struts including necessary
bracing, and tie forms.
Ensure checking for the required shape and dimension of footing as per engineer
drawings.
Alternatively, formwork and steel cage will fabricate together off-site and lower
down in the excavated footing hole depending to site condition.
5.2. Steel Cage

Steel cage for footing will be cut and fabricate off-site.

After completion of fabrication of steel cage for footing off-site, it will then be
lower down into the excavated hole of footing.

5.3. Concrete
Even though that G30 concrete is specified in engineering drawing, G35 concrete
is proposed in order to achieve earlier concrete strength for gantry installation.

6. BACKFILLING WORK
After completion of the footing foundation, backfilling shall commence using good earth
materials.

7. HEALTH AND SAFETY MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL SERVICES

Personal protective equipment: All workers wear the following: safety helmet, high visibility vest.
Site rules: All operation works expected to comply with the highway site rules.
Specific site hazards: Any specific site hazards will be identified and dealt with prior to any
excavation work.
Access to the work area: The provision of a safe means of access to the work area is the
responsibility of the client.
