THE STORY
THE MIRACLE
LOVING CARE.
WHAT IS CHRISTIANVILLE ?
In the beginning our hearts and lives were deeply embedded in 29 years of missionary
service to Jamaica, W.I. We believed that we would never leave. Then a chain of events
brought us to the place that we were convinced the Lord would have us serve Him in Haiti.
We answered an invitation by the President of Haitito come and build. Promises were made
and mostly kept - we were off to a good start.
Wefaced thispiece ofopen landwhenthere was nothing buta vision and a challenge. The
Lordprovided step by step - never failing in His promise ofcare and provision. To us there
were continued "miracles" - results of which we bring to you inthis tenth anniversary issue
of our "EVANGEL". The work is a many sided prism., one of those sides being the
marvelous and beautiful change in the lives ofourchildren as we have watchedthemgrow
in their Christian lives.
future, strong, spacious and uplifting tothe nameofour Heavenly Father. The Lord, through
Hischildren, has providedforthe 20 structures already built and we trust Him forthe needs
of the buildings now in progress.
A testimony to God's bountiful care is here at today's Christlanville. We have not done It
alone many many hands have joined together. We have not borrowed money - we owe
no debts. The Lord has provided and we trust Him one day at a time.
"Blessed be the Name of the Lord!"
Come with us now and walkwith us through the years that bring us to the Christianville of
today. We welcome you I
Three days a week we travelled from town to greet the sick and needy. In addition to
medical aid we gave food... tons and tons of it, provided by the USAID. There was milk,
wheat grains, cornmeal and oil. It was ourfirst expression ofGod's loveto a needy people.
We felt it was not yet time for formal services of a church - we wanted our people to
understand what the Gospel of the Lord Jesus really is.
Bythe end of that first year we were ready fora straw-roofedshelter forthe church and the
people were ready to listen. At the same timewe had begun our home so that we could
live among our people.
Today Christianville's Spiritual efforts are centered inthis beautiful building that seats over
500. Lucien Dorcelin is the preacher.

On Sundays there are regular morning and evening services, Sunday School and youth
hour. Daily early morning prayer hour, week night Bible study, ministry tothe poor, daily
school chapel and periodic retreats and seminars.
Many people have been united in marriage establishing Christian homes and building for
a more secure future for their children. The Wordof the Lord has been proclaimed and lives
have been changed.
Astrong emphasis has been given to our youth. Exciting quarterly retreats see an atten

Claudetteis one of our High School girls. She has a deep desire to be a Nurse - wants to
give her life to Christian service. She will be a head-start student when the time
comes..ieave that to Sandy.
The Nutrition Center is a part of our medical work, too. It is designed by a Government
program and food isallotted through the generosity of theUnited States. They give toour

malnutrition. Nutritional rates in the children are graded - too often the children are at a
dangerous level and we do find the parents bringing them to ustoo late. The number of
children in this program hasrallied around 400 for the past three years. And there arethree
centers - one at Christianville and two in the mountains.
Wesend outmedical "scouts" tofind the little ones inneed. The program includes nutritional
teaching for the mothers, daily food for the babies and a lesson from God's word.
At times when funds permit we have extras - and needed they are! Tucked in between is
a "soup-kitchen" for the elderly, no longer able to work. Here is another ministry of love.

volunteer dentists come. And it is beautiful to see our children growing up with good solid

But It did not begin here. In the beginning it was a chairkindly donated by a supporting
friend. Dr. VirgilUllum rescued the chair added accessories and went to work in a one room
dental clinic.
Amazing.
Years later Lyn sparked off the torch for an Eye clinic to help the suffering of our people.
Dr. Clifford Brooks, professor at Indiana University reached for the torch and organized a
team to descend on Christianville. Armed with a number of the most needed pieces of
equipment - beautiful equipment, supplies and professionals the team went to work. Their
first visit only excited them to press forward.

On their third visit some members returned with the pledge of ongoing permanent
dedication. Other changing team members pledged their hearts to ongoing fund-raising for
the future. On their third visitthe team expressed their professional but also loving care to

CHRISTIANVILLE IS A SCHOOL
In some countries ofthe world the learning ofthe 3 R's iscompulsory. Kids grow up in this
educational paradise seldom realizing thatothers in othercountries grow with a hopeless
hunger for a trip through a book. Such it is/was in our circle of love at Christianville. The
circle reaches outas far as a radius offive miles and kids "hoof it" day afterday to school.
Young strong bodies skipping down rough mountain trails, wading through rivers with
school shoes safely on their heads, limping in with stubbed toes - that'sthe way many of
them come. Thefarther theycomethe more prompt theyare. Thosewho live close by are
sometimes tardy. Now isn't that life I
FOR THE 3R'S ... AND MUCH MORE!
In the beginning we sat down to think, to pray,to wonder... how we could ever raise the
money to educateourchildren. TheLord used a friend to sendthe answer.."well, why don't
you have a sponsor program?" We wereoff to a start..registered 200 kids and wept over
them as we did. Itwas a clear reference to the Scripture, "when did we see you naked and
hungry, clothed and fed you ?" We were ready to trustGod and plunge ahead. Ourfirst
sponsorwas followed by a second and third thatfirst month and with the funds we could
gatherwebegangiving the children a tiny plateoffood. By thesecond month the platewas
fuller. It was a great beginning.
Now our sponsor program provides education, uniforms, shoes and socks, two meals a
day, books, medical and dentalcare and a Spiritual grounding In God's Word. And the love
that flows from Sponsor to child is just thrilling I The kids write, "Dear Parents," and the
Sponsors write, "Dear Children." That's the way it is.
GOD'S PRECIOUS LITTLE ONES
The untforms are bright red - they start the day In a happy mood - cheerful they are. Line
up preceeds the National Anthem at Flag Raising and the mood is set for prayer. This is
followed by a devotional in the class-room. Good order, discipline and cleanliness makes
for good learning.
True it is that we are short-handed for space. We solved that one with morning and
afternoon school - different teachers, different kids. A daily Chapel service sandwiched
between the two school sessions, is a joyto visit;to watch the long lines of children marching
smartly into the Church building.
The school is divided into three terms, Christmas, Easter, and Summer, closing at the end
of June and re-opening first week in September. The summer months, just two, offer
specialized classes for restless eager kids who want more learning. They find the classes
fun - we make them so. In fact, making our kids happy Is one of our main drives..like at
Christmas when there are parties and treats and new clothes. And at Easter new shoes
and colored eggs. And VBS in July.
Regular school life includes more than the 3 R's. There are sewing classes for nimble
fingers - allgirls are required to learn to sew. Andbeautifulworkitisthat they turn out I Know
what ? The work ends up in Christianvilie's Craft Shop and visitors are eager customers.
It is difficult to keep up the stock.
The art classes contribute some beautiful work, too. They do banana bark book marks,
Christmas Cards, shell lamps, art - hangings, and many other gift items.
But hurry - come with us now to band practice. It's great! Ourfirst band is doing very well
- in the spring practicing for Flag Day, in the fallfor Christmas, through the year for Church
on Sundays. Andthey look reallysmart intheiruniforms. Realtalent? Yes, It's reallythere
and drinking in the training that brings performance.
Are we proud of our kids ? You can believe we are.

But wait! We are not finished. Lookyonder., the donkeys are being loaded - loaded with
food and suppliesforthe MountainSchool. Yes, we have leftthe nearby highway and treked
into the mountains to reach God's littleones there. And away up there inthe heart of those
mountains is a school and church combined. The two go so perfectly together - married I
It is a rough two and a half hours on foot up there. Inthe beginning as we often say, the
children carried the food and supplies up that difficult path. That was too much, so God
provided Mr. Donkey. Cooking is primitive but good. Littlenoses smell the delicious aroma
as class nears the lunch hour and healthy bodies result.
The church building is rugged but strong. Building materials of town-type are nearly
impossible in the Mt. Mr. Donkey is limited. But the truck can reach Jean Jean and that
means a different type of building. Inside? The.teaching is of high quality in both places.

Protein is the third-world's greatest need and that means our kids needed it. They get it!
In the beginning, as we often say, while searching out the land God gave us, our boys ran
to us begging us to come-look. We ran together down our hill where the boys led us to a
beautiful pool of water hidden under thick tropical bush. Itwas a spring! As we knelt there
on the ground, we joined hearts thanking our Father for this lovely gift. We did not know
what it would be for but we knew God had a plan for it.
Later, one ofour Directors planted the seed in our hearts to establish fish farming. Today
we not only have our fish ponds but several ofourolder boys have established ponds intheir
areas where they find a stream of water.
Talapia is our main species. We also raise carp. Inour most recent harvest the bulk of the
catch ran from 1 to 2 .5 lbs per fish. They they are delicious!
We had only been in Haiti two monthswhen the news reached us. Heifer Project called
to tell us they wanted to give us a herd of cows. It was a beginning for a farm and we were
thrilled. Todaywe have 25 head ofcattle...and perhaps morebeforethe morning is over.
Those little ones keep popping intolife. This provides our children with another source of
protein. At first we butcheredon open ground. Now we have a butchery with a chain-hoist,
cement floor and water.
It was not long before we added goats to our farm and today we have upgraded our stock
with Nubian goats, excellentfor milk production. PaulRonk, ourfarm manager plansto give
out baby goats to needy farmers on the same planthat our pigswere given, (over300 were
given to needy farmers In the lICA program). The farmer must return the first female from
his goat for the next farmer. The males go to the cooking pot.
And don'tforgetour chicken farm that gives3 eggs weekly to our kids. Theyare beautiful
big eggs from hard working chickens.

in Haiti the boys learn some of the same techniques that their grandfathers used., hoe and
back bending. But with more modern techniques mixed in through Paul's leadership,
farming produces much better and it makes the back bending more acceptable.
Our kids are off to a good start for farm life.
AND A BACK BENDING AGRICULTURAL EFFORT
You have had agood look around ourcompound and asW0 walk back tothe mission horns,
past our staff houses, food storage building, craft workshop and goat yard, we are going
slightly uphill. Atthe topour honne looks overthe entire compound. It is acenter of constant
activity which we sometimes call a "three-ring-circus".
Early morning brings Celexi with the school wheelbarrow to collect the refrigerated
foods for the day's cooking for those hundreds of kids. Our secretary Hophnide, works on
the Sponsor Program, fits kids in uniforms and shoes.
After dinner at night there is always a group in the office planning the next day's activities,
reviewing blue prints, ordering supplies and chatting overthe exciting days work. Thursday
nights are dedicated to evangelism reports, Bible study and prayers.
Every day isfull - building iscontinual and our volunteers help to keep things rolling
ahead.
Christianvilie has grown by day and by night. It's early to bed for those who hit the deck
early, and for others it is midnight oil burning - listen carefully and you will hear the
