Study to assess cell-salvage in obstetrics

SALVO recruitment: 1 Year to go!

TSC Update

Now that weve been given another year to recruit the

remaining 797 patients to the study, many of you have already
taken the opportunity to re-advertise SALVO amongst your
colleagues. This is a great time to get additional staff trained
up and create a renewed buzz for the study, now that well be
able to bring it to completion as planned.

The trial steering committee met recently and reviewed our

progress, including the safety updates. We recently reported
on a related Serious Adverse Event (reaction to salvaged
blood transfusion) that was assessed to be related to the use
of the Leukocyte Depletion Filter. We do not at this point
advise for or against the use of the filter, and the committee
agrees that its use remains the local decision.

Swab washing at Royal London

Following on from the
Whiston teams report in the
May Newsletter, Sarah and
her colleagues gave washing
swabs in 2 litres of saline a go
I dont think well be going
back! was the verdict. The
higher volume of saline helped
to remove more cells from the
swabs see picture right.

If your patient was randomised to normal care, you would

normally tick Not set up, or emergency use (if the use of
cell salvage becomes clinically indicated during surgery.
Some sites have their machines in dry set-up for such
situations). If cell salvage is fully set-up upfront and used for
those randomised to normal care, this would be ticked as set
up on the form; obviously this would be non-compliance with
the randomisation and well all try to keep such deviations to
a minimum!
Remember that if your patient was randomised to cell salvage,
you would normally tick either Set up or unavailable/out of
order. Emergency use does not apply here.
