Symbols
The symbols used in safety notes are defined in the chapter Safety requirements.
>>

This symbol in a table indicates that the table is to be continued on the next
page or is continued from the previous page.
This symbol indicates cross-references to other manuals (outside this document).
Rectification of a fault marked with this symbol either requires the
customers service personnel or service personnel provided by MTU.
The affected assembly can be sent to MTU for repairs.
Such a fault cannot be repaired by operating personnel.

Some of the chapters in this manual contain structured task descriptions. The symbols
used here are explained at the relevant points by associated sub-titles.

ID numbers
Some of the chapters in this manual contain structured task and activity descriptions.
Each task and each activity is assigned an unambiguous identification number (ID no.).
This number is structured as follows X-X-XXX-xxxx whereby:
1st figure:
Either T for Task or A for Activity
2nd figure:
System affected (examples: M for MCS, R for RCS)
3rd 5th figure:Device or assembly (generally corresponding to MTU type designations,
whereby version numbers are omitted)
6th 9th figure:Serial number (when 1st 5th figures are identical)
Asterisks (wildcards) may be used for the 1st to 5th figures when a task/activity is generally applicable to all systems/units or if the type designation is shorter than 3 figures.

The central control is implemented by means of a processor, together with a RAM and an
EEPROM, which contains the project data and terminal software.
The Graphics pages (see Section 1.3.3) are displayed on the LCD display.
The display panel contains 5 function keys (F1 to F5) for the entire operation. The function
keys (F1 to F5) have a specific functionality assigned to them which depends on the selected page (see Section 1.3.3).
The power supply unit is supplied by the external operating voltage Uo.
The operating state of the display panel is indicated by the LED (3/5).
The clock of the display panel can be set (see Chapter 1.3.3.7). The set date or the set
time is used by all further bus nodes with clock (e.g. display panel).
In case of a system error in the display panel the watchdog function triggers an initialization.
The internal horn sounds and alarm if it is activated (see Chapter 1.3.7).
The temperature monitoring function controls the contrast voltage of the LCD display in
the case of strong sun irradiation and the corresponding temperature increase caused by
irradiation heat.

leading to one of the following status messages no longer applies.

Terminal
initialization

The display panel initializes as necessary.

It remains in this state if an invalid node number is stated or if there is
no project stored.

CAN not active

This message occurs when both CAN interfaces are faulty.

Bootup System The system checks whether the saved terminal software is uptodate.
This is carried out when the system software is started or when the
BDM or the PPS signals that it has saved a new software.
Download
System

The display panel establishes a connection to the BDM or

PPS and loads the uptodate terminal software. After the terminal
software has been downloaded successfully (check sum of the system
software is checked) the display panel uses the new terminal software.

Bootup Project

The system checks whether the saved project is uptodate. This is

carried out when the project is started or when the BDM or the PPS
signals that it has saved new project data. If an error occurs during the
download, the display panel starts a new download attempt.

Download

Communication via field bus (CAN bus)

The CAN bus is a standardized field bus with a very high transfer reliability. Various systems, devices, sensors and actuators communicate with each other via the CAN bus.
The CAN bus has a selfmonitoring function. The CAN bus can be configured singly or
redundantly. The redundant bus system is equipped with two CAN interfaces (CAN 1 =
default and CAN 2 = redundant) which can receive messages independently from each
other. Both CAN interfaces have to be connected to this purpose. The display panel sends
the same messages on both interfaces. In the case of a single bus system only one CAN
interface is connected. The following data are sent and received via the CAN bus.
The display panel receives:

 Binary value process variables (binary process variables, alarms, alarm acknowledgement, alarm reset, horn on/off);
Alarms are transferred with date and time

Analog value process variables (analog process variables, LCD brightness and
LCD contrast)

Date and time (from external time master for synchronizing date and time)
All Alive messages on the CAN bus (for monitoring the CAN bus)
An Alive message is the message of a bus node that it is active (alive) in the
CAN bus.
The display panel sends:

 Alive message
Error message if an error occurs in the CAN interface or if it is no longer active
(instead of the Alive message)

Date and time (once whenever the date or the time has been set)

36

FRIEDRICHSHAFEN

Node failure
In the case of a single bus system the node is regarded as failed if CAN 1 does not receive any Alive messages.
In the case of a redundant bus system the node is regarded as failed if CAN 1 and CAN
2 do not receive any Alive messages. Otherwise the process variables are used from the
interface which is active at present.
The reaction of the display panel when a field bus node (CAN node) fails is as follows:

The error state leads to an alarm which is displayed on the Alarm page.
Example of a single bus system
DL 372+A310-A101 (DL = Default lost)
Alarm due to the failure of the node with the device designation
372+A310-A101 in the default field bus.
Example of a redundant bus system
DL 372+A310-A101 (DL = Default lost)
RL 372+A310-A101 (RL = Redundancy lost)
Alarm due to the failure of the node with the device designation
372+A310-A101 in the default field bus and redundancy field bus.

All the affected PVs are set to MD and bar graphs are reset.
The error state is terminated when Alive messages exist and valid data are received again.

MD is reset and bar graphs are updated.

The alarm message (e.g. DL 372+A310-A101) on the Alarm page is deleted by
alarm acknowledgement.
Note:

If the acknowledgement node fails, the horn on the System page and on the
Status page can be deactivated with the horn function key.

1.3.6

Alarm handling

Note:

The display panel has no control to allow alarms to be acknowledged.

1.3.6.1

Non-stored alarms

Each new alarm is entered at the bottom of the alarm list as an unacknowledged alarm
with the status UNACK (unacknowledged). The entry flashes in this state and the horn is
activated. The horn is silenced the first time the external acknowledgement key is pressed
or when function key F4 on the System page is actuated. The alarm is acknowledged with
the second actuation of the external acknowledgement key. Alarm status changes to ACK
(acknowledged) and the alarm entry stops flashing. The entry remains in the list as long
as the alarm is applied.

1.3.6.2

Stored alarms

The alarm is acknowledged in the same way as described for non-stored alarms (see
chap. 1.3.6.1). However, the alarm entry is only cleared when the alarm is no longer
applied and a reset key has been pressed in addition.

1.3.6.3

Display panel used as an engineer alarm panel

The display panel can also be configured to serve as an engineer alarm panel (e.g.
unmanned control rooms). In this case the relay output is switched simultaneously with
the horn.

The internal horn, if active, and the external horn, if connected, sound after:

Alarm messages from the Monitoring and Control System (e.g. MCS)
Loss of communication on the CAN-interfaces (CAN timeout)
The external sounds additionally after:

Display panel system error (watchdog triggered)

Power supply failure (if own voltage supply exists)

Troubleshooting

3.5.1

General information

Page

3
69

This chapter contains instructions for detecting and rectifying faults on the display panel.

Reliable plant monitoring and control and thus protection of monitored components is only ensured when even minor faults are
rectified immediately.
CAUTION

Clarify the following prior to troubleshooting:

Have all operating procedures been executed correctly or is there a possibility

of operator error?

Is the operating status LED lit (see chap. 1.2.3)?

The faults listed below are immediately apparent to the operator.

3.5.2

Initial measures

If a fault occurs while the display panel is switched on, always check the following first:

Is the fault only an apparent one (e.g. because the required operating modes
are not activated?)

Are all the requirements fulfilled for the operating process at which the fault occurred? The requirements are described in the corresponding operating table in
Part 2 of this documentation.
If a fault occurs when the display panel or the corresponding monitoring system is activated, proceed as described in the fault diagnosis table in Chapter 3.5.3 and the documentation of the corresponding monitoring system.

3.6.1

General information

This chapter describes corrective maintenance measures at the display panel which can
be carried out by the operating personnel with emergency means.
Additional information, e.g. on the signal course, can be found, if required, in
other job documents (e.g. MTU drawings).

If a fault cannot be eliminated by means of the measures described in the document, the
nexthighest maintenance stage is to be informed.
At the end of the corrective maintenance measures certain concluding measures have to
be taken (see Chapter 3.6.3).
Note:

The spare parts which can be obtained from MTU for the display panel DIS
5.01/V5.10 are listed in Part 5 of this document.

Repairing the cabling (A-N-DIS-0004)

The following defects can be localized when checking the cable connections:

 Loose cable connections

 Damaged cable insulation
 Worn cables, shortcircuits at cables
These defects are to be eliminated:
Fastening loose cable connections
The cables at the display panel have to be fastened at the specified positions by means of
cable ties. Loose cables at the terminals are to be tightened. Press loosened terminal
blocks firms.
Repairing damaged cable insulation
If only the outer cable is damaged at a multipleconductor cable (the individual conductors
are visible), it is sufficient to repair it by wrapping insulating tape around it.

CAUTION

Danger of short circuiting!

If, however, individual conductors are also damaged and the
copper core is exposed, the entire cable has to be replaced. In
this case the corresponding assemblies have to shut down by
switching off the supply voltage.

Introduction

This illustrated parts catalog forms the basis for spare parts orders.
This catalog consists of illustrations and their associated tables plus a cross-reference list.
The illustrations and tables in the catalog also assist when dismantling and re-assembling
the individual assemblies. The catalog therefore also includes certain parts not available
as spares.

Illustrations and tables

The headings of the illustration pages and the associated tables contain the following
information:

EDITION (edition date)

REFERENCE (Bill of Materials (BOM) No. for the part shown in the illustration)

PAGE (page No.)

PROJECT (project name)
GAPL (group name in German) and
EGC (name in the foreign language)
CATALOG (the parts catalog number)
ILL. TABLE (four-digit illustration number)
REG. NO. (six-digit registration number)

The contents of the main headings on the illustration pages and their associated table
pages differ only in their page numbers (PAGE). All other information is identical.
The row of headings on the table pages contains the following information:

 C/N

Callout numbers in the illustrations crossreference to the

parts numbers and designations in the associated table.
The tables callout numbers are in a rising numerical
sequence.

 PART NO.

Use the part number for ordering spare parts.

a component is illustrated separately on its own page.

 ITEM

For in-house use by the manufacturer.

Cross-reference list
The cross-reference list includes all part numbers contained in the spare parts catalog.
The part numbers are sorted in a rising numerical sequence in the PART NO. column. In
addition, the DESIGNATION, ILL. TAB., REG. NO., C/N and, in some cases, the STOCK
NO. and PART NO. NEW are listed for each part number.

Modification service
No modification service is provided to inform about any part number changes taking effect
after completion of the illustrated parts catalog. We therefore recommend that you personally mark down any information about part number changes in the illustrated parts catalog. This information can be found in the order confirmation and on the spare parts delivery labels.

Ordering spare parts

The following information is required in order to process a spare parts order:

MTU order number

Engine number and engine model (see nameplate)
Part number
Designation
Quantity and unit of measurement

When ordering a calibrated part (marked by KF in the FN column), add the following
additional information:

If the calibration No. is known (see parts nameplate):

Add the calibration No., preceded by an oblique stroke, as an extension to the
part number (/xxxxx);
e.g.: 500 536 28 10/E1234.
Here, the extension E1234 would be the parts calibration number on the
nameplate.

If the calibration No. is not known:

Give a detailed description of the required parts installation location by quoting
the complete Device Description code (e.g. = 37.1.1 + A022 F003) plus the
part number extension /77 (e.g. 500 536 28 10/77).
In this case, the calibrated spare part will be supplied under a new part number.
The Device Description is found on the nameplate at the parts installation location, or in the corresponding Wiring Diagram.
When ordering a non-calibrated adjustable part (marked by KF in the FN column)
which should not be calibrated by the factory:

Add extension /76 to the part number

(e.g. 500 536 28 10/77).
To avoid errors, please confirm all telephone orders in writing.

Delivery of repaired parts

Parts sent to MTU Friedrichshafen for repair must be clearly marked with the MTU order
number and engine number.
